So I’m aware of the fact that it’s dickish to talk about why you DON’T like something under its own tag but I don’t really know how to say anything WITHOUT tagging so just as a fair warning here I’m gonna be talkin about my personal opinions on the HS Epilogues/HS2 under the cut and they’re like. Not entirely positive??

I have nothing against you if you enjoyed them, just wanna get that out of the way!! I think it’s great that you found somethin that makes you happy personally!! I’m not expecting anyone to renounce their love for some silly little comic because I personally don’t like it. Do whatever you want forever and all that!!

I also know this is a dead topic like advanced decay topic but I’m bored and I’m not sleepy and I wanna ramble. This isn’t coherent.

Ok I’m just gonna stop now.

So here’s the thing,

I’ve seen many people say this and, if I’m remembering correctly, I’ve been told a couple times as well that like, the Epilogues and the like aren’t serious, y’know??

Like, they’re not supposed to be taken seriously. It’s advanced stages of irony only 1% of viewers can solve this riddle type stuff.

Therefore, there’s a very good chance that I sorta just. Don’t get it??

Or it’s just a different type of humor then what I personally enjoy, which, again, is perfectly fine!!

Thinking about it though, I think what makes it, like, uncomfortable to a lot of people is the fact that it’s, like.

It’s not the irony that Homestuck proper was built off of, y’know??

Again, could be reading it wrong, but to me Homestuck very much has parody elements, but it’s also very affectionate about it.

It’s like, “Hey, you don’t know your online friends irl, wouldn’t it be fuckin bonkers if they were aliens or from an apocalyptic future cuz that’s technically possible” and that’s a parody type thing, y’know??

But it’s also very clear that the friendships displayed are very genuine. Like, they literally carry the bulk of all relationships in the comic.

And it’s like, yea, when you think about it this concept in online culture is really goofy, but it’s still important!!

And that’s a pretty obvious example, but there are a lot of other parody elements in Homestuck like that.

And maybe I’m a pansy but, like. That was nice, y’know??

And I feel like the Epilogues and such were also trying to go for something like that.

Like, I don’t blame people who see any of the contents and think it’s serious, because it DOES get into some seriously heavy shit, but looking at some stuff for a while makes it, like, glaringly obvious that it was a big joke about fanfiction.

I mean the intro page is literally a mock up of the AO3 tagging system like I don’t blame people for not looking into things but it was right there, y’know??

And I mean, cool!! As someone who enjoys and writes fanfiction, I can confirm that it’s really dumb when you think about it!! It’s weird and silly and sometimes you find yourself asking “Dude why the FUCK am I doing this?!”

But unlike Homestuck proper, I feel like they sorta just. End it at that.

From the way I see it, the joke sorta ends at “Hey guys, isn’t fanfiction weird?”

But they sorta just. Kept doing that. And it was just every single punchline.

And to me that fell kinda flat, y’know??

It also just sorta feels mean after a while cuz it’s literally just “Fanfiction is weird” and no further elaboration.

I mean we KNOW, y’know??

It also almost feels a little self deprecating considering that after a while Hussie wasn’t really working on the Epilogues all that much which essentially meant the writing was technically done BY fanfiction authors.

Poking fun at yourself and your weird hobbies can be fun!! It can elicit some good laughs, especially if your audience is people with similar experiences to you!!

I feel like it’s something that has to be done in moderation, though.

And I see what the Epilogues and the like were going for, and I’m not one to say that anyone’s sense of humor is inherently wrong because comedy is subjective.

But as stated, in moderation.

To me it kinda just got old really fast and there wasn’t really any other joke besides that one.

So while I certainly understand that having disturbing and uncomfortable topics isn’t what automatically makes something bad to some people, I DO think that overuse of a punchline is a very common and very valid reason to not enjoy something.

And again, I’m not mad at you or anything if you DO like the Epilogues/HS2 or if you DO find them funny.

I just, like. Don’t.

And I feel like a lot of other people just sorta don’t find them funny and that’s their main gripe with them.

But then they don’t REALIZE that they don’t find them funny and so they scramble to find another way to explain why they don’t enjoy them and while that’s perfectly understandable it leads to an environment where complete dickheads can squeeze their way in and be complete dickheads to creators to the point where it’s NOT being a dickhead and it’s just straight up harassment and that’s how HS2 got to the situation it’s in today and that is NOT FUN!!

But yea no in conclusion I don’t find the Epilogues/HS2 funny, I find it very likely that most other people who don’t enjoy them just don’t find it funny, I��m not mad or trying to change your mind if you DO find them funny because comedy is subjective, just don’t be a fucking dickhead and that’s not even targeted at anyone just don’t be a dickhead.

Anyways I gotta go tuck Ruby Longstocking in it’s past their bedtime and we’re going to the water park tomorrow for a family fun day.

Genuine question, wtf happened w Optimistic Duelist?? I’m not on Twitter, so all that I’ve seen is that they posted this, disappeared for a while, a bunch of people started shitting on them on both Reddit and Tumblr (Reddit nothing new obvs, but it left r/EnglishPumpkinParty and r/AltHomestuck and began happening on regular old r/Homestuck)??

I saw the Dirk sui comic and their reply, but liek… is that really it?? Did they just see a comic they didn’t like?? And weren’t they literally a part of developing HS2??? I am so disengaged in the Homestuck community lore but this has been plaguing my teeny little mind so I must ask >:?

I feel like the reason *I* enjoyed Homestuck^2 despite... everything, was because I never really saw it as a 'canon' continuation of the main comic? Like to me it was so separated from Homestuck proper to me that I could ignore the weirder shit and just pick the interesting parts that I personally like, which is definitely the superior post canon experience

Anyway I think the name change to 'Homestuck: Beyond Canon' is definitely a good step into getting the rest of the fandom to see it that way

I did say that I would play hived swap act 2 only if act 3 came out ...so maybe I will

Look i know the epilogues and sequel gave us some godawful shit but there was also some ideas i liked and i think the culmination to all of that shouldn't be that it's all fake

Even if i didn't like anything about the post homestuck stuff it's still a shit idea cause what was the point of all those years of character derailment if it was all fake? This is just like the it was all a dream ending what the fuck was the point of the story if none of it was real in the first place

I think this is going in the the meat timeline is the canon timeline direction but this is also bullshit

What was the point of presenting 2 timelines in the first place if one of them isn't real

Aus are fun and all but at least present it as a noncanon au from the start i am invested in the story you can't just tell me it's fake after all this time of getting me to care about the characters

I'm hoping vriska gets proven wrong but we all know vriska is homestucks special lil blorbo so everything she says is gospel

that quote was directly from rose and dave's chat on the lilypad during that back to back group talk. also yeah that other quote was thrown around a lot and it was frustrating considering the first bonus story was about redeeming (meat!)jane. and to do that, they pinned the blame on ult!dirk. so sometimes people you know turn into fascists, except when it turns out that they were being manipulated by a soul controlling god. except in the timeline where that god killed himself and left them to their own devices, except it turns out that person was also being effected by Rage Clown Dick tm. And in the end none of that really matters cause Jane is still a boring and incompetent villain.

and to be fair to hussie, they are correct there. it is a famous quote that conflict is the soul of a story. however, they did omit one itty bity ever so tiny little detail from the original quote: "MEANINGFUL conflict is the soul of drama". people can paint hs as this rebel against conventional story telling all it wants, it is still not immune to the eight deadly words.

and yeah, i can feel that on the vriska front. like even the best subtle joke that hs2 had was tainted by the feeling of "i can't tell if you intend for this joke, or if you mean for vriska to be in the right here". that joke in question being as i've seen some people dub it: vriska has a reddit moment. i will let you decide if you care to hear more.

Oh gotcha! I must have forgotten that conversation. Lots of conversations in Homestuck lol

I thought in the Epilogues, Ult!Dirk mostly let Jane do her own thing, he just manipulated events around her to make sure she would win. I think Dead!Callie tried to manipulate Jane more than he did (though I can only remember the juju moment right now). Not to say if it didn't happen in the Epilogues it isn't said to be a thing in HS2/bonus content but you know lol Because you're right -- Jane is still fascist without him in Candy and Gamzee is just straight up gross and pathetic not some clown dick capable of tainting her like that

I think there are types of stories that can be told without conflict, but I agree that Homestuck is not one of them and you're right -- *meaningful* conflict is what I was getting at. Not "everything is terrible because this is what it's like to be in your 20s and then grow older and it all stays terrible". *And* it's not a good response when people are criticizing your work. Not that Hussie's ever been good at those responses lol

as someone seeing all this from the outside, whats trnasphobic about people hating homestuck? I've never seen it associated with trans people and I cant see anything about this hussie guy who made it being trans

hussie is in fact trans (nonbinary, any pronouns, apparently psycholonials goes into more detail about how they feel re: gender but i haven't played it) and if you've never seen it 'associated with trans people' idk skill issue there is a very large and vocal trans fanbase for it and historically has been to the point that it's a meme that a bunch of transmascs who transitioned circa 2015 are called dave and are embarassed if you ask why. that said i don't think there's anything transphobic about hating homestuck, there's lots of perfectly good reasons to hate homestuck or hussie. parts of homestuck are horrifically racist. some of hussie's older work is even worse. the ending sucks. the epilogues suck and also waste much more of your time. huge chunks of the comic itself are just not very good even aside from the racism. you can feel however you want about homestuck idc

where transmisogyny comes into it is 1. poeple have been harassing and ridiculing a bunch of trans women on here for having a book club wher ethey read it and 2. moreover and what i have mainly been posting abt this in relation to is that there are many people whose reaction to dtwof losing in a meme poll is to go on various different varietals of 'the degenerate ingrates are not appreciative of the True Real Queer Culture, how far we have fallen' rants, which is indicative of a kind of cisbian homonationalist reactionary attitude that elevates the 80s/90s usamerican cis gay scenes to the status of an unattainable mythic past. & this is an attitude that basically goes hand in hand with transmisogyny because they treat any of the many, many warranted criticisms about how transmisogynistic the culture and scenes they idolize were with extreme condescencion and hostility.

VRISKA SERKET, hailing from welcoming Homestuck, is in the blue corner! She's a TROLL, a TELEPATH, and a THIEF. She has also attained GODHOOD, and I'm informed she did nothing wrong! Just off the heels of a dramatic loss in the recent Tumblrwoman Election, she deeply resents being trapped in this narrative device!

Her attire today is plain by Earth standards, but well put-together by ALTERNIAN ones. Nevertheless, she has been known to dress up on occasion, particularly in the colors of her ANCESTOR, the Marquise Spinneret Mindfang!

She is extraordinarily determined, and extremely manipulative. She will do anything she can to make herself into the hero her story needs, consequences be damned. Her actions have made her the source of eternal, vitriolic discourse. Some believe her entirely justified, some believe her a heartless villain, and others believe everything in between; every one steadfast and passionate about their specific stance! Love her or hate her: VRISKA!!!!!!!!

HARRIER DU BOIS, also known as HARRY, sometimes referring to himself as RAPHAEL AMBROSIUS COSTEAU or THE REINCARNATION OF KRAS MAZOV, is here representing scenic Disco Elysium! He is a DETECTIVE, an ALCOHOLIC, a recent AMNESIAC, and a WASTE of ENERGY. Having just recently recovered from an attempt at drinking himself to death, we thought inviting him to compete might raise his spirits some! Unfortunately he does not seem to be totally aware of his surroundings, as he has already tried to touch himself twice on air!

His garish and mismatched clothes are STAINED with seemingly every substance a human body can produce. His face is locked in an EXPRESSION that can only induce disgust and discomfort in those who view it.

The few memories he can draw from his fractured mind paint him as violent, selfish, cruel, and pitiful. He has been trying to get over a breakup for six years, and has only partially succeeded through near-total retrograde amnesia. Worst of all, he's still somehow a decently successful cop. He has no friends and few allies on Revachol, with perhaps the sole exception of the impossibly patient and composed Lt. Kim Katsuragi. Even among his fans, you'd be hard pressed to find one who'd defend him, and ever harder pressed to find one willing to stand in the same room as him. Nevertheless, from the safe distance of fiction, let's hear it for HARRY!

In but a few moments, the doors in front of them will open, and they will be able to approach the trophy onto which we have engraved the name of the winner. 5… 4… 3… 2…

Listed fandom fun

A bit of random data before we jump into the rankings for listed fandoms …

Since the numbers post yesterday we've had signups for nearly 60 new auctions, bringing the current total to 779. That beats the number of signups for 2016/7, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and puts us withing spitting distance of our record last year of 819. Can we do it? Will we do it? Signal boost FTH posts and encourage others to participate. More money raised for good causes, more fanworks in the world — it's a win/win!
