#hogwatch
Okay, but what does Vetinari do during Hogwatch? Does he go on business as usual? Do the clerks?
Because I feel like some otherworldly entity with villinous things in mind for Ankh-Morpork try to do an evil version of A Christmas Carol on him. Like, every year they try and every year he scares them away by just not putting up with it at all.
And Drumknott is the complete opposite of Bob Cratchett in every way.

I have missed reading Discworld. I just blew through rereading Monstrous Regiment in under 48 hours (probably would have been under 24 if it weren't for things like sleep) and am now debating if I should go dig up books with Vimes/the Watch, William de Worde, or Tiffany Aching & the Feegles

Saturday Snippet
I know a snippet is usually a Sunday snippet but I’m hoping to post a chapter tomorrow, so let’s have a Saturday snippet instead. Here’s a little something from the next chapter of Wilder than Mountain Thyme.
“What are you drawing there, sprog?” Sirius asked, pulling out a chair to sit next to him.
“It’s Pa’foot,” Leo said cheerfully, pointing at the purple blob. “Si, can we go to the castle please later?”
“Not today, kiddo, I’m sorry. But you’ll come to me next week and we’ll go to the zoo, remember we talked about that?”
“To see the lion?!” Leo shouted excitedly and Sirius laughed.
“Yeah, to see the lion,” he nodded. “Do you remember what the lion’s name is?”
Leo scrunched his face up in concentration, frowning at the paper for a while before shaking his head, turning his head to look at Sirius with wide eyes. “What’s his name?”
“Jay,” Sirius said with a grin, picking up an orange crayon.
“Jay,” the boy repeated before pushing his bottom lip out, “that’s a stupid name for a lion.”
Sirius barked out a laugh, “You think? What’s a better name for a lion then?”
Leo thought for a moment before lighting up, grinning widely, “Leo!”
Sirius hid his laugh behind a cough, “It is, isn’t it? A much better name.”
“When I go to Hogwatch I’ll be with the lions,” he said as he turned back to his drawing and Sirius chuckled.
“Of course you will, just like me, eh? Be sure to tell your dad that.”
“I will,” Leo promised.
“Okay then, little lion, what do you say about going to the park for a bit?”
“Yes!” Leo said excitedly. “Can I go on the swings?”
“Anything you want,” Sirius promised, “put the crayons away and then we’ll go.”
“And the drawing on the wall, Si!”
“Yeah, alright, pick a spot then.”
Leo grabbed the piece of paper he’d been drawing on as he slid off the chair to make his way over to the far end of the kitchen. There were no shelves along that wall, instead it was covered in Leo’s drawings. It had become a tradition of sorts, that whenever Leo had drawn something he got to pick out a spot on the wall to hang it on.
“Up there!” he shouted, pointing to an empty spot somewhere halfway towards the ceiling.
“Okay then,” Sirius said, pulling his wand out to send the drawing levitating to the designated spot, using a simple sticking charm to make it stick to the wall. “There we go, perfect.”
“Perfect!” Leo echoed with a decisive nod. “C’mon, let’s go to the park!”

A Book for All Seasons: Why Terry Pratchett's Hogfather is a Must-Read All Year Round
Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather is a novel I can’t help but love. Published in 1996, it’s the twentieth book in Pratchett’s popular Discworld series, and tells the story of Death and his granddaughter Susan trying to save Christmas and rescue Santa…erm…I mean, save Hogwatch and rescue the Hogfather. Full of witty humour, clever satire, and relatable characters, the Hogfather skewers fantasy tropes…

Artificial intelligence will be used for the first time to track hedgehog populations as part of a pioneering project aimed at understanding how many of them are left in the UK and why they have suffered a decline.
Images of the prickly mammals snuffling around urban parks, private gardens, woodlands and farmland will be captured by cameras and filtered by AI trained to differentiate between wildlife and humans.
The images will then be sent to human “spotters” who will pick out those featuring hedgehogs and send them to analysts, who will record the numbers and locations.
Using this method, the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP) hopes to be able to produce estimates of hedgehog populations in different habitats across the country, show how these are changing year on year, and – in time – give a national estimate of the UK’s hedgehog population.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) said this would produce crucial insights into the factors causing hedgehog populations to plummet, and enable conservationists to implement practical conservation measures to try to reverse the decline.
The three-year project is in partnership with Nottingham Trent University, ZSL’s London HogWatch, Durham University and MammalWeb, and largely funded by Natural England.
Dr Henrietta Pringle, the NHMP coordinator at PTES, said: “For the first time in the history of hedgehog conservation we’re using AI to open up new opportunities, which is extremely exciting. Previous studies have estimated hedgehog populations, but there has never been a rigorous nationwide survey of them – until now.
“We know hedgehogs are struggling – especially in the countryside – but before we can put practical conservation measures in place we need to understand where they are and why they’re declining.
“This is the first study where populations are measured year after year in the same location, which will produce vital data and allow us to identify those at risk, which in time will hopefully help us to reverse the decline. The results will also allow us to see regional and habitat differences, and identify what factors impact them in different places, which will not only be fascinating but also incredibly useful for their long-term conservation.”
Fay Vass, the chief executive of the BHPS, said: “Everyone loves hedgehogs, but we recognise that not everyone is in a position to help them in the wild. Becoming a ‘spotter’ for the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme is a fantastic way for everyone to get involved. Now, those with mobility issues, who don’t have a garden or perhaps are away studying at university or college, can help from the comfort of home.
“Helping hedgehogs has never been easier or more accessible, so we really hope people from all walks of life take part.”

Merry Hogwatch everyone! (Roundworld calander edition)
I hope everyone has a wonderful day and remembered to leave out some sherry and meat pies for the Hogfather last night. Maybe even some turnips for those hard working hogs that pull his sleigh?

Hasanabi really helped me feel less doompilled about politics. I used to get so angry, discouraged and sad when seeing these insane right wing fascists gather and protest or spew their nonsensical bullshit about lgbtq people. now I just laugh. hogwatches are my favorite videos because I love seeing how insane they are. I can watch Fox News and grin because they’re so stupid. being able to laugh at someone saying something transphobic or homophobic or ranting about the “liberal agenda 🤬” or the “radical marxists 😰” has made my life so much less stressful. and I know this country is on a high speed train to fascism but seeing people my age and seeing people like hasan get angry and point and laugh and feel determined and be empowered by each other makes me have hope for our future. i really do hope a revolution comes, but I don’t know if it will. I want to help as many people as I can in the meantime
