Top Five International Stars That Flopped in WWF/WWE
Top Five International Stars That Flopped in WWF/WWE
Brian Damage Today’s Top Five subject is all about some of the top international stars that joined the WWF/WWE over the years and flopped. Big stars in other parts of the world and other promotions, but wrestlers that Vince McMahon and company just didn’t use properly or just couldn’t get over for whatever reason. fanfic asks ~ 🎵💖🥳😮
🎵 What was the #1 song you had playing while writing? What fic was it for?
I don't play music while writing HOWEVER all the songs on my Kenta (/Takeover) playlist gave me big time brainrot. I think Californication was early on the playlist and I took it straight to the brain trying to internalize Kenta's brainspace during the horrible WWE / Hideo Itami run. There's something so despairingly Americana that song captures so well.
💖 Was there a comment or another piece of feedback that made you feel all the warm and fuzzies?
Oh the regulars around here being sweet about my Takeover fic has been wonderful. @golden-lovers comments often and is so sweet. @orange-catsidy left a little note on one of the earlier chapters that I grinned about for days after. @zumo-san being lovely and reccing chapters when I posted them. And of course @sldghmmr getting kenta brainrot from the fic ;D
🥳 What writing accomplishment made you most proud?
Honestly, the structure of the horror sequence in branded for madness, born for what’s warm was sooo good. There's a way it moves from familiar to unsettling (in spite of being uniformly haunted) that I think really hit the right notes for both the Magnus Archives lore I was trying to evoke, and the unique headspace of Eddie / Punk that I was trying to capture.
😮 What surprised you this year? Was it reception to a certain fic? A direction change in one of your stories?
This is the first year in 6 years I haven't blown past 100k posted on Ao3! Not even close, actually-- I really stewed on the Takeover fic and I'm coming in closer to 20k ish. Part of that is not surprising since I didn't do any major collaborations in 2022, which really kicks up the word count. Part of that is working a 9-5 that I actually like quite a bit and don't really need to nor currently want to lapse into fic fugue state daydreaming in the middle of it. That is NOT to say that I actually work productively for 8 hours -- more so that in between what is probably 4 hours on average of Working the other stuff functions more as debuff activities or workplace socialization. Prior to that, being in grad school-- well, minimal opportunities for true collaboration even before the pandemic, and in 2021 like Good Fucking Luck. I blame that for the blistering 163k I wrote with collab in 2021.

Random Wrestling opinions I have (mostly wwe)
Pwg is underrated
Aew is overrated
The Authority storyline went on for way too damn long. Everyone involved could have been doing better things, especially Seth and Sting
Dean Ambrose deserved better writing and the "lunatic fringe" is a stupid nickname
WarGames 2018 is the best modern WarGames match, 2021 is the worst (it's still not that bad though, there's no such thing as a bad WarGames that one was just the worst of them because it made no sense)
One Final Beat is underrated
Also please please please give us more cinematic matches
Hideo Itami or Tyler Breeze should have been nxt champion instead of Drew McIntyre
Retribution could have been a decent faction with time, better writing AND WITH LESS STUPID NAME CHANGES
I'm happy he's getting more attention but Charlie's character in nxt feels really one-dimensional right now and I wish he was given as much personality as he had in nxt uk
BO DALLAS SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE WYATT FAMILY
Aew sucks for a lot of reasons but one of rhe biggest ones is that they fave the men two new titles in the same year when it's been over four years and WOMEN'S DIVISION STILL DON'T FUCKING HAVE TAG TEAM TITLES
the Iiconics were one of the best tagteams in wwe and it's a travesty they were ever split up
Same with Heavy Machinery and speaking of...
OTIS DESERVED BETTER DURING HIS MONEY IN THE BANK RUN
Jinder Mahal is underrated
Apollo Crews should have been in the Hurt Business, possibly after Bobby left

My Highlights from WWE Elimination Chamber & NJPW Battle in the Valley
Tumblr media
So instead of my usual long-winded reviews I'm deciding on something else, just highlighting the stuff I like from the PPVs, in this case two on the same night
On one end we have matches like Jay White vs Eddie Kingston and Mercedes Moné vs KAIRI, and on the other you have Elimination Chambers and Sami vs Roman. Let's see what I liked
Spoilers for the PPVs, watch them first if you don't want to be spoiled
WWE Elimination Chamber
Starting with the easy one, Montreal's crowd was a huge plus, proper into it just like El Paso was last week on AEW's shows
Liv Morgan x Elimination Chambers, girl just loves some gnarly spots so you gotta appreciate the gusto. Liked the way she was eliminated too, even if I had hoped she'd be final two
KANA. Asuka is on yet another resurgence and she deserves it. Back to her roots, she once again proves to be the most viable opponent for the champions, and frankly I think she should beat Bianca (tbf I wanted Asuka vs Charlotte: the revenge so we could get Rhea vs Bianca but this way if okay too) so she can get a world title reign that doesn't get bullshitted over
FINALLY DOING THE HOLLYWOOD PARODIES
Beth Phoenix sporting a bit of Bull Nakano facepaint
Dominik's ability to draw heat is great, he knows his role
Balor crossing from under the ring to sweep Edge
Beth and Edge did the Big Rig (Cole it's not the Shatter Machine anymore)
We need Rhea vs Beth one-on-one, make Rhea champion and have Beth challenge down the line
Starting the US title EC with Gargano vs Rollins, a feud we should have for Mania instead of Rollins vs Logan Paul
Theory locking himself in the pod was a better spot than when Carmella did it
Tezzy Ford, to absolutely nobody's surprise, did amazing, he's a year overdue in needing that singles run
Roman's character work during the match (which was slow going) is still great, even gaslighting Sami's wife. The psychology in hindsight was good too, because all the rest holds was to INTENTIONALLY kill the crowd energy, because that cut off Sami's energy source from Montreal's crowd
Also Sami's selling, not just for taking offence but also dishing it out, you feel the adrenaline carrying him through
Heyman thinking he could fight Owens
NJPW Battle in the Valley
A surprise mention of Mascara Dorada's (aka Gran Metalik) AEW Dark win run
Adrian Quest and Kevin Knight, as well as Dorada and Volador Jr's, synergy was great
The sheer madness it is that Hideo Itami vs Darren Young (with Aiden English on commentary) would've been a 205 live taping at best in WWE and yet it's now a title match on a NJPW PPV
KENTA being a bastard, hell put KENTA vs PAC as a feud have a proper Battle of the Bastards
Rosser's STF-Chickenwing was unique-looking
Reminder that MCMG debuted 17 years ago and they're still great
That one fan who sold Jay's Too Sweet like he was just given $100
Jay White also being a bastard, he will land wherever he ends up
The absolute CRACK you hear when Eddie chops someone, few do it better
Eddie outwitting Jay by rolling out of the ring after being hit with a Blade Runner
Jay kicking out of 3 Urakens, a half and half and a Northern Lights Driver!
Eddie giving Jay respect post-match as well, Jay could've easily left after Hikuleo, he could've just disappeared but instead he put Eddie over afterwards. I'll say again, he'll land wherever he ends up
Dave Finlay's promo after makes sense, that's how you get heat
Tom Lawlor hamming it up
Homicide sporting a Jay armband for Jay Briscoe
DVD, off the ring, through a door!
Commentary taking time to thank Jay White for his career
Watching ZSJ transition through submissions is like watching a sculptor work clay
I've only ever seen Clark Connors wrestle twice (first time being Forbidden Door) and I've enjoyed his energy both times
Mercedes out with the TCS Hana Kimura look, a bittersweet moment really, a great tribute but god I miss Hana, and I'm still not over the fact that the ones they charged got away with just an $80 fine
KAIRI hitting Mercedes with a table powerbomb off the stage
Mercedes this time hitting the Mone-maker cleanly
Mercedes landed, it was ultimately so important that she landed on her first post-WWE match and she did, she was worth the Mone. As much as I'm sad that KAIRI's reign was short, it makes sense
The stipulation of the main event, Okada and Tana are great wrestlers, but New Japan had fallen back on Tana vs Okada way way too many times
Overall
Match of the Night: US Championship Elimination Chamber (Jay vs Eddie is a close second but in spite of the shit finish I felt more entertained by the chamber)
Best Performance: Sami Zayn
Best Attire: Mercedes Mone's Hana Kimura gear
Best Spot: Montez Ford splashing from the chamber roof

Nick's Match Review of the Day:
Nigel McGuinnes v. KENTA (Ring of Honor 7th Anniversary Show) 3/21/09
A bit of a long one, clocking in at just over 25 minutes. The lengthy runtime may be a turn-off for some people (for some odd reason) but those twenty-five minutes are chock-full of wrestling wizardry. The 2000s were some of the best years for Ring of Honor, featuring some of their biggest stars, best matches, and their working relationship with Pro Wrestling NOAH. That relationship allowed numerous ROH talents through the years like Samoa Joe, Homicide, Davey Richards, El Generico, Roderick Strong, Jay & Mark Briscoe, Jimmy Rave, CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Nigel McGuinness, Chris Hero, Erick Stevens, and Kevin Steen to compete with NOAH talent such as KENTA, Kenta Kobashi, Naomichi Marafuji, Go Shiozaki, and Takeshi Morishima. The ROH x NOAH partnership thus allowed for a slew of legendary matches combining technical wizardry and stiff striking in a beautiful and brutal cocktail of violence.
KENTA's resume speaks for itself - trained by the great Kenta Kobashi, the innovator of the GTS (Go to Sleep) was a multi-time GHC Jr. Heavyweight and 1x GHC Heavyweight and tag team champion in NOAH, spending over a decade with the promotion. He would later move to the United States for an uneventful stint with the WWE as Hideo Itami, before returning to Japan, arriving in New Japan Pro Wrestling, aligning with the Bullet Club, and making a few appearances for All Elite Wrestling along the way. He's renowned for his ability and is undoubtedly a legend.
Nigel McGuinness does not have the same kind of career as KENTA. His brightest moments were in Ring of Honor, holding both the World and PURE championships in superb, lengthy reigns. His clashes with Morishima and especially Bryan Danielson became the stuff of legend amongst ROH fans, but unlike Danielson, his talent couldn't outweigh his concussion concerns. A chance at joining the WWE was dashed by his history of head injuries, and the arguably biggest role he would wind up playing was Desmond Wolfe in TNA. Life sadly dealt him a bad hand, but his performances during his time in the ring still impress even years later.
As apart of ROH's 7th Anniversary show in 2009, KENTA and Nigel met in the ring in a match for Nigel's ROH World Championship. The champion entered the match with an arm injury suffered during a previous tag match, but still managed to perform at an exceptional level during the contest. Even though it was Nigel that came in hurt, much of the match revolved around the story of the champion targeting KENTA's arm. With multiple Tower of Londons, including one to the outside of the ring, being hit and Nigel attempting to weaken the challenger to set up the London Bridge, KENTA spends much of the match as the underdog attempting to come up from behind. The contest has numerous close calls and on many occasions it truly feels like KENTA will claim the world title.
It's a very good match, and one of Nigel's best defenses. ROH was something special in the early 21st century, and Nigel and KENTA were big parts of that.
⭐⭐⭐⭐. 5 stars out of five.

Sunday MaruKEN 3: So, where did we leave off? (2013-2018)
Tumblr media
2013.7.7 - KENTA vs. Marufuji, GHC Heavyweight Championship Match
Tumblr media
KENTA & Naomichi Marufuji vs. Takashi Sugiura & Katsuhiko Nakajima (**TOP REC**)
Tumblr media
2018.09.01 Hideo Itami KENTA vs Naomichi Marufuji (Marufuji Anniversary Show)
Free links provided, you might be able to dig up a better quality recording with a WrestleUniverse subscription! My notes on the matches (not spoiler free) under the cut! By the way if you watch all these matches in order from this episode, you will have your heart ground up to a paste :)  (what’s this?)
Match 1 Notes
This one is absolutely wonderful to see. This is No Mercy KENTA at full power, the ace of NOAH at this moment, finally getting to face down his rival where he has the upper hand. KENTA hit an incredibly impressive 9 successful GHC Heavyweight champ title defenses in his reign, and this one is excellent.
Match 2 Notes
God, if there’s anything to break your heart -- it’s just how over KENTA is with the crowd in this match. This is his farewell match to NOAH, and he and Maru tag for the last time before he heads off to be shackled to “Hideo Itami”. The still I picked for this is actually cribbed from KENTA’s instagram -- he highlighted this moment with the caption “I GOT YOUR BACK” to hype his upcoming reunion with Marufuji.
One thing I will say about this match (a lot TO say, I know) is that it contrasts from their Jr. Heavyweight tagging style. Kenta is in the ring lots, but it’s to showcase his skills to a crowd that loves him maybe even more than Marufuji at this point (rather than to showcase his selling to build up the drama of when Maru is going to do something crazy). He’s really come into his own here.
Nothing hurts more than the “your dream is our dream” sign for Kenta, ow ow ow.
Match 3 Notes
I would honestly make this required viewing after Match 2 but also it’s kind of painful required viewing. It’s a great match, and cholk-full of references to Maru and Kenta’s prior matches-- they may be moving slower, both carrying injuries, but they still have it.
But man, seeing Kenta soak up a crowd that loves him with a mix of relief and “god what did I ever leave this for” sure is something. Especially knowing how hard it must have been to get WWE to even cut him loose for one match for Marufuji’s anniversary, the tag partner and rival who defined his career...ugh.
In conclusion, great match! Fuck WWE forever!
Overall Notes
I feel like this part of the arc is really shadowed by the shoot reality of what a difficult time Kenta’s WWE run was (at least for me). The way the quality and style of the wrestling changes, and Kenta’s demeanour throughout really got to me. I think this is also really interesting commentary on the kayfabe he chose to go with in NJPW. Certainly watching a few Hideo Itami matches made the layers that went into that richer for me.
But to end on a positive note: wow it’s never been more clear to me that Marufuji and Kenta have defined each other’s careers. There’s an amazing mutual respect in the fact that Kenta’s farewell match was a tag with Maru -- in the fact that Maru called him back for his anniversary show so they could wrestle together in the main event. And now? They’re going to reunite again in NOAH. I’m excited to see what comes of it.
Thanks for reading this far! This concludes the “backwatch” portion of the Sunday MaruKEN series, though in all likelihood I’ll post a little review of their New Year’s show <3

Missed opportunities in pro wrestling storylines I'll literally never shut up about (mostly NXT)
Sonya and Tucky never should have turned heel and instead should have become besties so Fire & Desire and Heavy Machinery could have just been a big happy stable
William Regal should have been on Team WWE at Summer Slam against the Nexus that year
Lacey Evans never should have been debuted as a heel she had all the potential to be a loveable face as a kind badass southern belle
Imperium vs Undisputed Era in War Games
The fact William has been in aew for months and he and CM Punk haven't interacted ONCE
Tyler Breeze and Hideo Itami should have been NXT champions at least once each
The Shield should have invaded NXT and it could have led to a staredown between William and Dean and Dean silently calls for the others to retreat out of respect (and fear)
Aleister Black vs Bray Wyatt. That is all.
TM61 NEVER SHOULD HAVE TURNED HEEL
Pete Dunne vs Keith Lee in NXT
As much as that match fucked and still fucks to this day, narrative wise it made no sense for Bianca and Kay Lee to be on Shayna's War Games team it should have been Jessymn and Marina but gods I'm glad we got the match that we did
BUT ALSO MIA YIM WAS ALMOST IN A WAR GAMES MATCH FUCK
Heel!Candice and Io should have fueded for the the women's championship back and forth like Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura WE WERE ROBBED I TELL YOU ROBBED
Marina and Jessymn never got to be taken seriously as competitors/ threats on their own because they were just treated as Shayna's back up which sucked because they had the potential for tag team gold dude
WILLIAM LAYLA AND ROBBIE BROOKSIDE SHOULD HAVE HAD A STABLE TOGETHER
