you have a point about fandoms as a whole having a sexist lean but isn't mei is literally one of the most popular characters in the fandom and dragonfruit one of the most popular ships in the fandom? It's one of the top 5 most written about ships on ao3 if you remove self insert stuff.

So I'll preface this with I only have experience with the lmk fandom on tumblr.

But like, it's 90% shadowpeach stuff (with maybe MK as a third wheel). I know this, you know this. If you look through the "lego monkie kid" tag right now Ne Zha has more content related to him and only him than Mei does—she's usually gonna be thrown in with dragonfruit and traffic light trio (though, admittedly the lmk fandom has a problem of viewing characters outside of shipping in general). For every 1 Mei fanart there's 1 piece of Ao Lie fanart to match despite their vast differences in screen time. Like, am I insane? Am I insane for thinking it's the sexism?

Undercover 101

Crime Family Walker- FBI agent Michelle Ramirez is undercover with Trey Barnett to investigate the Walker family crime ring and find a way to dismantle it. After a few months of playing Walker's partner, she believes she's found an opening, only to learn a horrifying truth about how her own past is tangled with the Walkers. Between this new information and disillusionment with how the FBI handles their cases, Micki decides to leave one method of law enforcement for another.

Chopped at the Roots

After Cassie is sexually assaulted at work, a blackmail threat from her attacker keeps her mouth shut as she tries to navigate life both in and out of the office. When an internal investigation forces the truth to light, Cassie has to face it head on in front of the whole office. Luckily, she's got Cordell and Ben supporting her.

One Slice, Two Forks

Henry Winchester verse but Cordell is Dead

After Cordell Walker dies on the job, Emily calls his estranged brothers to invite them to the funeral. After they arrive, Emily asks them to stick around and connect with the children and hopefully pass on the hunting knowledge Cordell never got around to sharing with them. Stella doesn't take well to this development. August takes it very, very differently and considers himself the next protector of the family.

The "a mere beta defeated Scott" thing in fanworks is honestly so funny because wasn't it Peter who got owned by human teenagers AND a beta?

To be entirely accurate, Peter Hale got pasted by two betas and three teenagers in Code Breaker (1x12). I don't count the senior Argents because Kate never landed a punch and Chris was entirely unconscious during the fight. Scott was present, but he wasn't very effective, mostly getting thrown around by Peter.

But that illuminates a point that the fandom misses in the writing of Teen Wolf: violence is repeatedly portrayed as not very effective at solving problems. Oh, it's a tool all right, but it's not the solution that the fandom wants to make it out to be. The villains in Teen Wolf end up defeated by Scott not because Scott is a bad-ass warrior, but instead because of other traits that are often overlooked: his compassion, his empathic discretion, his force of will, and his faith in other people.

The first and primary example is Code Breaker itself: of the five people who brought Peter down, four of them were present and able to help because Scott expressed concern and faith in people beyond what would be considered normal. Derek, who betrayed Scott to Peter, would have been absent, dead or still locked away by Kate. Jackson, who bullied and blackmailed all season, would have been dead by Derek's hand, which would also mean that Stiles wouldn't have been able to get there in time. Finally, Scott is the one who had enough faith in Allison to toss her bow to her, the same one she had been shooting at him not five minutes before.

The truth is that Scott became a hero without wanting to be a warrior. He didn't patrol the world looking for villains -- they came after him, the people he loves, or even the people living in his town. It's not a surprise that stronger or more thoroughly trained opponents could cause him problems in a physical fight, but he won eventually because he was able to ask for help and get people to work together for a particular cause.

But let's turn to the specific claim you brought up, 'a mere beta defeated Scott.' I'm not actually sure which fight that refers to, so I'll talk about all of the fights between Alpha Scott and a beta werewolf -- I'll leave out para-scientifically enhanced werewolves such as Belasko and all the other chimeras. I will also define a fight as when both sides throw punches -- so that leaves out Scott tossing the twins around in Letharia Vulpina (3x19).

That leaves only five fights that qualify.

In More Bad Than Good (3x14), Aiden and Ethan beat the snot out of Scott, so Scott lost to two betas. These two betas had been thoroughly trained by Deucalion. (One of the things Teen Wolf did right was use fighting choreography to show the degree of training. Theo, Kali, Ennis, and the twins were more balletic in their styles to denote their training; Scott's fighting choreography evolved over time.) Scott was also hampered by the inability to fully shift, due to the consequences of the sacrifice.

In Echo House (3x20), Kincaid handles Scott, Kira, and Allison easily, with a sneering little comment, only to be overwhelmed when Aiden and Ethan enter the fray. I could argue that Scott was distracted in worrying about Stiles, but I really don't like this fight. It doesn't make much sense considering that Stiles was as much in danger in the previous episode and Scott threw Ethan across the room. It still happened, though.

In The Benefactor (4x04), a newly bitten Liam gets the drop on Scott in the woods, and Scott could have been in trouble without Chris Argent's intervention. Of course, Scott wasn't fighting that hard, because he wasn't there to hurt Liam. Part of it was guilt, but part of it was probably also the idea that Scott understood he would have to be Liam's alpha and that meant he had to win Liam's trust. A beating on top of kidnapping and tricking him wasn't going to help that.

In Smoke & Mirrors (4x12) Scott has a final confrontation with a Darach-infused Peter. At first, it seems that Scott is having a difficult time. I don't think that's unreasonable considering that before this fight started, Peter, Liam, and Malia were beating him up, and he had just spent a great deal of effort on breaking the Berserker's hold on him. In the end though, Scott pasted him because Scott is an alpha and Peter never was.

That leaves Status Asthmaticus (5x10) and the fight between Liam and Scott which ends with Liam having beaten Scott to the point of death. Do I need to point out that this entire scenario had been arranged by Theo? Liam, angrier than ever before and fueled by the super moon, was pitted against Scott, who has finally figured out that Liam and he were being manipulated while being poisoned with wolf's bane?

So, in five fights with beta werewolves, Scott lost four of them. All except the one against Kincaid had extenuating circumstances where Scott was inhibited. In each case though, the production made the case that even if Scott had successfully beat the beta in question, it wouldn't have improved the situation. Scott didn't need to beat up Aiden and Ethan to close the door into his mind; he needed to save Malia. Allowing Aiden and Ethan to help achieved their goal with Kincaid; they retrieved the shugendo scroll. Scott was able to reach Liam through empathy and compassion in the woods, not brute force.

Finally and especially, if Scott had defeated Liam in the library, what difference would it have made? Would that have magically fixed their relationship? Saved Hayden's life? Stopped Theo or the Doctors? Not at all. Scott achieved his goal in that battle -- "I can't let you kill me" -- but he didn't need to win. A violent triumph would not have solved the problems. What did solve the problems of the season, no matter how you feel about it (and I have lots of feelings about it), was Scott using compassion, empathy, and strength of will to rebuild his pack, because that's what, in the end, stopped Theo, the Doctors, and La Bête.

So in the end, Scott was often defeated by beta werewolves in violent conflicts. And the production's response was "So what?" To be the True Alpha, Scott doesn't have to stop them; he has to lead them.

Eldritch Abomination MK Theory

OKAY. @the-punning-ubus

I just want to say reading these tags are SO validating, because I have my little "MK was an eldritch abomination thing pre-hatching from stone" theory and seeing someone else come to pretty much the same conclusion feels good.

I've been meaning to write a proper theory post on this for a while, so now is as good of a time as any!

Obviously we have Wukong's "Not just anyone can wield my staff, but you did" from A Hero is Born and "The staff's just a big 'ol stick bud! It takes someone special to wield it" from 3x03, but there's also something in 1x09 Macaque:

Macaque: "Your staff kinda gives you away dude, not just anyone can wield that thing."

Macaque: "Ohohoh no, can't you hold the magic staff anymore? Well, you know what that means—there really isn't anything special about you. You're just a kid with a heavy stick."

The sweet irony of "There really isn't anything special about you. You're just a kid with a heavy stick!" followed immediately by MK lifting the staff again is not lost on me.

So, from s1 it was pretty obvious that Wukong didn't "give" MK any form of power, but we knew that already with MK being a monkey demon and all. I just think it's particularly intriguing that all of this was laid out in the same episode where MK proclaims "I am the weapon!". In all honestly, he probably was/is.

One of the main questions coming out of s4 is "why was MK created?"—Monkey King's stone was used to form another, but for what purpose? To what end? What reason was MK at the center of all these stories?

Well, here's my current theory:

MK was something in a past life, and that something needed to be contained—and so, to put a stop to past life eldritch abomination MK, he was then sealed away in the stone.

I think this scene in particular raises some alarm bells:

The stone cracks open, bursts with light, and then it closes—like something was put inside it. The scene could of course just be an aesthetic choice, or chosen to be this way for another reason we don't know yet, but it just feels so deliberate. A ball of light appearing from the stone, then another ball of light in the mystery woman's hands being revealed to hold a monkey, and then the stone reforming around the ball of light. I just can't help but feel there's something there.

Next I want to discuss the two key things that make me feel this theory has merit:

1.) MK has made a habit of breaking out of things he shouldn't be able to (the calabash in 1x05, the trigram furnace in 2x00, the scroll in 4x07, Destiny itself in 3x14) and the stone would be no exception.

2.) Every antagonist in this show has been sealed away in some form, then being released to resume their plans from before being sealed. Here's a list:

DBK was sealed under the mountain, and after being released continued his plan of world domination.

Spider Queen was metaphorically trapped in her fallen empire, and after being given the chance to rule the above world once again, immediately takes it.

The Lady Bone Demon was imprisoned in her tomb, and after being released prematurely (before learning the error of her ways), she continued her plan to destroy the world and create a new one.

Azure Lion was imprisoned in the scroll, and upon being released (by an unknown 3rd party), immediately worked to free his friends and then end the Jade Emperor's reign.

Now, I love foils, so MK breaking out of the stone he was sealed in, yet coming out an actually changed being unlike everyone else in this show, would be DELICIOUS:

Lady Bone Demon: ”No backup and no weapon? So, you’re plan is to fist fight a child?” Sun Wukong: “We both know that’s not what you are.”

(3x11 This Imperfect World)

Lady Bone Demon: "STOP! Have you forgotten? Destroy me and you destroy the host! Have you become so desperate to end me that you would sacrifice this blameless innocent child?" Sun Wukong: "You're giving me no choice! All the time you spent locked away, and you haven't changed a bit! I'm going to finish you, like I should have done a long time ago! I told you—you should have stayed buried."

Subodhi: "I have not brought you to your master. Although this is the stone from which Sun Wukong once sprung, it appears overtime, it was used to form another. A simple creature, with no past, no family, and no name. There is a reason you were at the center of these stories—a reason you can harness the power of the Monkey King himself!"

So, if MK were to hatch out of the stone—where *he* was sealed away—and he actually came out of it a "blameless innocent child" with "no past, no family, and no name", it would work exceedingly well. Wukong's not above giving people second chances, but if you use that second chance to try and destroy the world, you force his hand.

(Side note: it could also be the case that the stone was used to "reset" whatever MK was in his past life, and Wukong was originally meant to destroy whatever came out of the stone—which could be the reason he stayed at Flower Fruit Mountain for hundreds of years. However, when an child came out, a new being without a past or the memories of what it was before—Wukong choose to let it go. He choose to let it live a normal life—or even ensuring it could live a normal life—and it then found it's way to Pigsy. This definitely gets into real crack theory territory, but I did want to bring it up.)

Now, none of this is even mentioning the suspiciously MK shaped figure in the mural from 3x13:

Now, the figure in this mural is only shown when MK is also on screen, which is framing that drives me insane. Perhaps this is when they first caught MK's past life, then finally able to subdue him and seal him in the stone.

And so, if MK really was this terrible chaos driven abomination in his past life, what does that mean ✨thematically✨?

Well,

Sun Wukong: “Point is, mistakes happen, but so long as you leave the world in better shape than you found it, then it’s all good. Right?”

SWK: “ENOUGH! I’ve never let anyone dictate my destiny in the past, and I’m not about to start now. None of us are! We can’t change who we were yesterday or in a past life, or a hundred life times ago! We live with the choices we’ve made, for what matter is the choices we make RIGHT NOW! Only we decide who we are and what we do with the power we have.”

MK can't change who he was in a past life. He can't change that the roads all lead to pain. But you know what he can do? He can try. He can try and get a little bit better every day. He can try and help people. He can try and make the world better than he found it.

Maybe in a past life, MK caused just as must chaos and destruction as Wukong did in his past. Maybe he caused even more problems then he has as the Monkie Kid. But that also doesn't undo the good he's doing now.

saw your answer of "coming full circle" and I agree — that's actually my theory for the finale. I mean we just got a parallel!? 3x17 and 1x03, owen provoking that guy to get him arrested and tk starting the fight at the bar. Its totally for different reasons I understand but something about the Strands.. It makes them father and son for a reason at the end... anyways 👀 i was wondering what do you actually think of the owen dying theory, I know there is a lot of holes to poke into this speculation (it feels stupid to actually ask it) but I just wanted to hear your take on it Xx

I have been very vocal about being against Owen dying. I don’t think they’re killing Owen. It doesn’t make sense narratively, tbh, and it won’t work for the story they’re telling with Owen. Also, TK isn’t ready to be an orphan.

One, Owen has been passively suicidal the entire show. He doesn’t want to die, specifically, but he’s not like against it if he does it saving someone. It comes out in the things he says like “Oh no, all the real heroes died that day” in the pilot or “I’m invincible apparently.” And the risks he takes that are just, in some cases, entirely unhinged and done without forethought, that could result in his death easily. We’ve watched the firefam try to get Owen help for his struggles with depression since season two, and they didn’t give up on it in season 3. Mateo and Marjan have stayed on him.

I, personally, am not comfortable ending the life of a character who struggles with depression and passive suicidal tendencies in a rescue death when he’s in therapy and actively working to deal with his issues after seeing where that darkness lead in 3x14. It just doesn’t make sense for where they’re going. In the same way they aren’t going there with TK, who also struggles with passive suicidal tendencies, or with Bobby Nash and Eddie Diaz on OG. The narrative here isn’t that grimdark. Yes, terrible things happen and we can’t stop them, but there’s hope in the 911verse for the things we can do and change.

Additionally, Owen isn’t done growing and changing. The man is a walking disaster at relationships. He has a collection of children who reflect himself back at himself, but as he once explained as to why he likes Billy, despite Billy being Billy, is that it’s nice to have friends his own age. He’s just not good at it. And I don’t know how much of it is that most of his contemporaries from FDNY are dead, either in 9/11 or from the cancer afterward, or just the power structure he sets up of being a good deal older than his firehouse. He has more growth to do.

And then from a TK perspective, to take his second parent from him in under a year feels incredibly cruel. Gwyn was special and I adore her, but TK loves and is loved by both of his parents. The thesis of 911 Lone Star, for me, is encapsulated by the Carlos quote from 2x04 “They are nice people. They just aren’t perfect people.” These are nice and good but imperfect people. Owen has made mistakes with TK. Of course he has, but he also does his best with what he has.

To lose his last parent would be a devastating blow to TK and with how fragile his sobriety has been lately, I wouldn’t want that storyline at all. He deserves one living parent at his wedding.

If he dies, I’ll be shocked and, honestly, disappointed. If Rob is ready for a step back, I’d be okay with him taking on the chief position from Billy. It would be a great role that would let him have some chances to pop in from time to time but also space for other things.

But if Owen is out here confronting 9/11 memories in this episode, I’m gonna need him to live. He’s been burying those in the black box for so long and they’ve been ruining so many of his relationships since that day, I need him to begin to grapple with them and come out the other side.
