i feel especially bad for joel in episode 5 of the show, or the portion of the game with henry and sam.

this man already struggles throughout the entirety of the game and show with the weight of keeping ellie safe.

now we know that ellie specifically is special to him, because she is a young teenaged girl like his daughter, and obviously he’s more connected to ellie than henry or sam… but either way, sam, henry, and ellie are all babies compared to joel. joel is at least 30+ years older than all of them. that’s a huge responsibility to be taking care of three “kids” during all of this.

both the audience and joel find out (at least in the show, i’m not sure about the game) that henry has never actually shot a gun or killed someone, he’s never killed any infected or even seen a clicker. so even though henry is the oldest between ellie, sam and himself, he still is much less conditioned for the apocalypse compared to joel. and the fact that they made sam even younger in the show makes it so much worse because he really was just a child.

…but my point is that this is so much pressure on joel. even if he barely knows sam and henry, to joel it was still two other kids that he was in charge of, for the betterment of his own conscience and hope that he might actually make a friend in henry, that later died under his watch. and i’m not trying to make henry sound completely useless but in the scale of the group, joel is the oldest, most experienced and hardened one.

and the hardest part? henry died the same way that joel almost did all those years ago… and he had to watch it. a young man, only in his early twenties kill his eight year old brother and then himself, all under joel’s watch. two more kids he couldn’t save.

two more reasons why joel did what he did at the hospital.
