hey friends I’m looking for some reading recommendations!
I’ve just been rereading old favorites, which is a joy, but I’m hankering for something new to surprise me and capture me. I’m open to anything but have particular soft spots for:
- narrators or POV characters with distinctive, atypical voices, perspectives, or assumptions who make an ordinary or extraordinary world more interesting by being seen through their lens (ex. Martha Wells’ Murderbot, owlet’s This, You Protect)
- clever, precise plotting and storytelling such that final conclusions or reveals click together like delightful, unexpected but perfectly predictable clockwork— the sort that you can see obviously in the first chapter but only after you’ve read the last page; stories where the authors trust the reader to pay attention and figure stuff out (ex. Megan Whalen Turner’s The Queen’s Thief series, The Westing Game, Pamela Dean’s The Secret Country)
- worldbuilding with depth and texture — it feels explorable, immersive, like you could study it, like you could get lost, like other stories are going on just off the page (The Secret Countey gets a second honorary mention here, great book, I highly recommend)
- characters you can root for, especially ones that are slowly, quietly, unregretfully tearing themselves apart for something they care about (Kip Mdang from Hands of the Emperor, Newt from Designations Congruent with Things, Nico D’Angelo from the Percy Jackson books, Arthur in rageprufrock’s Presque Vu)
I like stories with momentum, stories that swallow you. I like beautiful things. I like stories that surprise me and make me think. Help a gal out? What stories have captured you?

The long debate
Tired of the Bullshit ( Rant)
Masashi Kishimoto "Sexists, misogynist and sucks at writing women"
I'll make this very clear, Kishimoto is also NOT obligated to put a lot of effort on any character he doesn't want to. He didn't write female characters "bad" than most other Mangas I've have read before, he gets called sexist because of the fandom's treatment of the female cast. ( Yes by all genders )
( A shouen is mostly for the teenage boy demograhic, we all can google the definition up....but I don't say people even try.)
Contray to belief, the mangaka do listen to fans whether mail or twitter. Hell, gotten so bad for Kubo (Bleach) that fans were harrassing him he deleted his account.
Kishimoto always focused on building up Naruto & Sasuke, leaving his side cast behind.
If Naruto gets a power up, then Sasuke gets a power up
If Sasuke loses a loved one (Itachi), then Naruto loses a loved one (Jirarya)
People need to realize it was Naruto & Sasuke story
(As much as I wish he but more time in the side cast/clans Uzumaki, Senju & Hyuga instead of focusing on the Uchiha clan so much you can't force him to.)
It’s dumb to come to the conclusion that Kishimoto is a perv and misogynist just because he drew some sexy justu and big breasted women like Tsunade, Samui & Hinata.
( Other anime do this but he seems to get more backlash it just the girls the only the said)
Tumblr media
or because he joked about Hinata breasts. KANA BOOM/ Kishimoto Interview Snippet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then you have this: Never heard of suigetsu being sexualized boy just walking around naked. (All the shirtless scenes & panels. but oh no big boobs cleavage has he no shame ( me being sarcastic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But making a big deal when we see Hinata's chest (Hardly ever & always covered) when only time is when she got stabbed in the chest by Pain & needed to be healed
( Didn't know showing a bit of cleavge get's mf's in a tizy but don't seem to care about a seeing a shirtless or naked boy.... the irony)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Then there's Studio Perriot made so much fanservice of Hinata
which is total bullshit don't know why Hinata is the ONLY one people love to focus on when each woman on the show had fanservice. Honestly did you watch the show fillers or just twitter/ tiktok vids.
"Sexists, misogynist"
yet his staff laugh at the thought of a woman knitting a scarf. Like his wife knitting a scarf for him.
Reading his author notes in the manga: He'd spend over a decade making this story missing out on friends parties, weddings & quality time with his family. I remember his father passed during the middle of war arc. He's was having health problems & still working on the Naruto manga. His relationship with on of his son was so bad his son just reffered to him as "the guy that created Naruto" ouch.
Tumblr media
youtube
NYCC 2015 Panel 2015
7:14 after the series finishes spends more time with his family & kids
7:33 about his marriage got married during run of naruto & never had a honeymoon
bonus his inspo's from other mangaka some good rec 21:12 slam dunk, 20 century boys, monster, Phoniex
youtube
32:03 story about boruto the movie has a bit about Kishimoto & his sons relationship
Jump SQ magazine and recently in the American version of Jump. When reading, please keep in mind it was conducted BEFORE Naruto’s official conclusion on November 10, 2014.
Contray to belfie, they weren't even bad ( only inconsisty in maybe two) if he again gave less focus on the Uchiha clan. We could have more arcs & fights for other characters. Heck, the rumored Part 3 of Naruto could done that. ( He puts all characters info in a databook )
Tumblr media
Kishimoto explains how Sakura was created for the sake of a love triangle, he didn't say I created the rival and the love interest, he just said a rival and a love triangle because that’s legit the reason why Sakura was created in the first place.
If you don't beilieve me about the triangle pushing the rivarly let's go back where it started in chapter 3
Tumblr media
The female characters didn't get any development or have goals & There not relavent to the plot!
The girls most of them are side characters they do have goals & dreams & get develpoment.
Tsunade: A pessmistic but change wanting to protect the leaf village & naruto's dream to become hokage
Hinata : Overcoming her family's abuse. Changing herself and train to become a better fighter and a more confident person.
Sakura: Wanting to be with Sasuke at first but, later wanting to become stronger in order to fight beside Naruto and Sasuke.
Tenten: Become a strong kunoichi like Tsunade.
Mei: Wants to marry a guy. But truly wants rebuild her village. Formerly know as the "Blood Mist Village."
Konan: achieving world peace and gave her life to give for Naruto because her friend Nagato that beilived in him.
Relevancy
Despite some not getting enough screen time they were pretty relevant to the plot if characters didn't appear then other characters would have died.
Had Tsuande denied to become hokage lots of thing wouldn't have happen if she didn't return to the village. Many people would have died during pain arc/ war arc. Hinata if she hadn't jumped in the Pain fight Naruto would have been captured & died. Hinata also did quite a bit in war arc to. Ino was a big help during the war. Ino helped take down inkaku & ginkaku. Relying messages to the Shinobi World not once but twice. Sakura helped deafeat Sasori and healed many people during war arc. Tenten she did help in rescue arc. War arc destoryed kakazu's mask. If Mei didn't become Mizukage her village would still be known as "blood mist village". Pretty damn helpful in war arc.
Why do people never have the same energy for the male cast character when there about the same as the female cast?
The fanbase can be bias alot for characters.
Let's be honest after Sasuke retrival arc most of these male charaters(From konoha) didn't have much after this just little moments after part 2.
Kiba, Shino, Rock Lee, Choji & yes even Neji because he really didn't do much in Rescue arc. ( I'd say choji & rock lee did a bit more in war arc)
He said Sakura would be a terrible woman if switch to loving someone else... Sexist!
Tumblr media
Kishimoto : Quite a long time ago in fact. But i have to admit that there was a time when we did thought about Sakura, you know. But after all this time, she would just change her heart all of sudden to Naruto, this would make her a terrible woman…I think she is wholeheartly about Sasuke.
Why did he say that?
Because she fell for Sasuke in part 1 she even confessed to him and kept rejecting other guys, it became more than just a crush.
Tumblr media
Kage Summit Arc:
"The hero who defended our village, right now everyone loves you, i’m simply one of them’’.
Her falling for Naruto out of nowhere because he's a nice guy & the guy you truly love a criminal.
This is what he's talking about the sudden switch up. (this chapter was released around the time or later during this interview)
Tumblr media
Even Kakashi says that Sakura is still in love with Sasuke this whole time, he knows his team better than anyone
Tumblr media
Kishimoto is a sexist, a guy can get over his crush and girl cannot.
What about Ino? Didnt she have a crush on Sasuke?
Ino got over her's crush ( although she had a crush on both Sai & Sasuke too she does have a type lol) for something better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's only female healers in Naruto that so sexistist!
I wonder who the hell said that before we've seen many male healers before its just show that Tsunade, Shizune & Sakura are meant to be top dogs in the field.
Exam: ch 66-88
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsunade Arc: Yes Orochimaru & Kabuto are "dark" healers ( Mostly Orochimaru, Kabuto sometimes randomly would heal Hinata & Sakura)
Tumblr media
Reterival Arc: chapter 235 see both men & women medics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
War Arc : ch 536-539
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So many more but I digress.
The Plot holes in Naruto
If you read the manga there's not many plot holes in it.
the biggest one is when hashirama died... becasue when did he die in the manga?
War arc was bad, "Neji died by sticks."
Like most of yall wasn't hyping that shit up.
Acting like he didn't get sniped before by Kidomaru with a long ass wodden stick.
"Bad writing it, didn't make sense, It's Hinata's fault neji died. all she cared about was Naruto's big hand."
It's only bad writing when you don't like it huh?
After part 1 Neji is just a side character & was never important untill war arc. He never had a big impact on the plot until war arc.
In the manga they made it very damn clear that the spikes were too fast & the natural reaction was to be a shield.
Tumblr media
Let's make this clear NO ONE told Neji to jump in the way!
It's not Hinata fault Neji died, he choose to died to protect his loved ones aka Naruto & Hinata. This circled backed to his character development.
I'm not going over this again there were so many great written answers like this one:
(Most of who say that interview was by someone telling someone or read a summary of it on a damn Naruto wiki page.)
Also another great one on quora Atla Jamir on why Neji shield Hinata.
Kaguya was a terribly written villian
Well, I wouldn't say bad villian. If you watch Boruto they go more in depth with her character & why she even did that in Naruto. But I will say he could have went deeper into her story instead of making mini flashbacks or one panel explantion.
Now that all I got for now I probably will go back & edit later.

It's honestly so cool that you live near one of the authors you read and she was your professor. All my authors are in the US while I'm isolated in Canada, so meeting them is near impossible at the moment lol.
Ngl, I was also a bit intimidated when I saw how many books Agatha Christie has. But if you want to do a test run, I do highly suggest The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. I listened to it on audio and I liked the narrator, I think he did well. I won't push it on you though, it's just a personal rec.
Oh, I've also got a couple more questions, plus a rant for one.
How do you organize your bookshelf? I personally have my books by matching height because I'm really OCD, and if things don't match up, I get so triggered lol.
Second, have you ever cried (or just got really emotional) while reading? I certainly have and have no shame admitting that. I've done that with shows and movies too. Sometimes with games. Again, no shame with that whatsoever. And this is where the rant comes in.
It always bothers me when people say that it's "wrong" or "pathetic" to cry while reading something. They use the excuse of it being "fiction", so it's not meaningful or whatever. I don't agree with that at all. I think it's totally okay to get emotional while reading. It comes to show how great something is.
Don't get me wrong, it's not like it's an issue if people don't cry or get emotional while reading. What's wrong is that people are judgmental about it and are typically rude to others. What are your thoughts on that?
-Book Anon
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Thanks for the suggestion, Book Anon. I could use another audiobook since I'm not listening to anything like that right now. I'll look into it and decide.
I organize my bookshelf based on authors. Every section of books is based on the author, and then within each section, books are in order if they're a series. If they're multiple stand-alones, then it doesn't matter after that.
In relation to your second question, oh heck yes I have. Multiple times. I've done the same with fewer shows and movies than I have with books, but I have definitely shed many a tear over a passage that really knocked me out. And then I just kinda sit there and cry and don't feel like doing anything for a while lol.
I completely agree with your thoughts in your venting session, Book Anon. The problem with people like that is they don't understand how impactful something like a book or a special tv show or something similar can be. It being fiction has nothing to do with its worth. In fact, a lot of times, things that are fiction rank higher in worth than something that's nonfiction.
Stories help us understand and relate to aspects of the world in which we live. We learn through stories; we make connections through stories; we are inspired by stories. It's a fact of humanity since our creation. We need stories, whether they're filmed or written, fact or fiction, we need them. Even the judgmental types who say it's foolish to get emotional over a fictional story.

Finally got internet back today and got some new things. Had a salesman come inside and 2-3 hours later setting up new things, pretty much turned him into a Sailor Moon Convert. XD
I said my new thing was the same color as Jupiter's skirt and he'd heard of SM, but never watched it. So this led to who was who in my figuarts collection, opening up my new Chibi Moon figure I'd had NIB for like 2 weeks, him being impressed, asking me questions about SM and other questions (come to find out she is NOT the most popular anime woman, unfortunately I can't remember how he phrased it, so the actual most popular/well know/whatever woman from a list escapes me now. I've been up since 7 AM again, so brain is dumb now), and anime suggestions. I said I knew ones from the 90s, but it depended on what you were into (IE genre). I suggested Outlaw Star bc it's like one of the few sci-fi anime I'm familiar with. And Tenchi-Muyo, but just now I remembered the squick (yes, it is) relationship between Ayeka and Tenchi and then, Tenchi's grandpa (her half brother). But anime is weird and SM has a lot of weird, creepy crap in itself and I'd say few anime do not have weird, creepy crap on many levels. One of the few I've found so far that is devoid and not aimed at children (IE Hamtaro) is My Love Story. Freaking wholesome it is!! Anyway, dude saw what other anime existed and was like, "I gotta watch these before I start Sailor Moon." Fair, fair. Hope he likes it and the others!
So, anyway, I'm either lonelier than I thought or I just REALLY like showing off my hobbies. It's no wonder people don't believe I'm shy or inarticulate. LOL. Edit: Let's all hope he watches it before he recs it to anyone, like his niece, because I just remembered THAT scene with Wicked Lady from SMR. Whoops. Well, to be fair, it's not like any fan's mind jumps to it when recommending it. But I tried to warn thoroughly, saying it did have some swearing, was rated TV-PG, and that S3 was dark (even in the 90s dub, TBH). I've been thinking why the heck they had to leave it in Crystal, but I'm sure it was for shock value. No fan wants to see that. (I should hope not and I'm going to judge anyone for shipping ******.)

Ok, I have done books, now for films/tv!
I have to say, I don’t think this was a very good year for me with film and TV. Especially film. It ended up being kind of hard to come up with a list, but here goes:
1. Come and See (1985) dir. Elem Klimov - I did not initially think this was going to make the list and I originally gave it 4 stars but I’ve found I simply cannot stop thinking about this film. It’s currently sitting at #1 on Letterboxd top 250 of all time and for good reason. I love the motif of photography. It’s brutal and heartbreaking and so stressful but yeah. Can’t stop thinking about it.
2. Harakiri (1962) dir. Masaki Kobayashi - So good, probably my current favorite samurai film.
3. The Northman (2022) dir. Robert Eggers - VIBES. I saw this 2.5 times in theaters (the .5 is because uh teenagers threw trash on our heads. So that was an experience. We had to leave halfway through but we got a bunch of free tickets out of it from the very nice manager of the theater so thank you for that.)
4. [REC] (2007) dir. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza - Um, why have I waited this long to watch this movie? Watched it because I was writing a ‘found footage’ inspired fic and looking for inspiration and it was so good!!
5. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) dir. Joseph Kosinski - Look. Look. Here me out: plane go fast. Plane go fast and the climax was essentially beat-for-beat Star Wars: A New Hope. Don’t @ me with any discussion of propaganda, I know, okay, I know, but this movie was so entertaining and as an aviation enthusiast I had so much fun and I think this is probably the most successful unnecessary sequel I’ve ever watched. Like did anyone ask for this? No. Did it totally work? Heck yeah.
Honorable Mention: Everything Everywhere All at Once (emotional, chaotic), Raw (#OrganicCannibalism), The Cremator (um pretty fucked but really, really good), NOPE (whenever I think about the ‘eating’ scene I get a bit of anxiety, 10/10)
TV:
1. What We Do In The Shadows (Fx, 2019- ) - VAMPIRE PHASE. ACTIVATE. What else is there to say? Style icons, decor inspiration. Never did I think the American TV show version of one of my favorite films would end up actually so good. It’s funny and heartfelt at all the right moments. I’ve been rewatching it because it’s one of the few things I actually had saved to my computer (so the only thing I could watch in our 2 week internet-less hellscape) and it remains so delightful.
2. Westworld specifically season 1 (HBO) - I haven’t quite finished watching this one, and APPARENTLY now might never (except you know, flying the pirate flag), and though I disagree with popular opinion on season 2 (I liked it), I see where season 3 is really taking a downturn…but season 1 remains some of the best television storytelling and you can’t take that away. It was utterly brilliant as a standalone, truly some of the top tier television.
3. Tabula Rasa (Een/Netflix, 2017) - Speaking of twists, this had a bunch of really fun twists, the first of which I saw coming. That one lulled me into a false sense of confidence and the other two took me completely by surprise. Also had really fun fall/spooky vibes.
4. Chestnut Man (Netflix, 2021) - Also had really fun fall/spooky vibes, and good characters. Only docked points because one of the main characters gets his glasses knocked off in a fight during the climax and then not only manages to accurately fire a gun (?) but then voluntarily drives a car in the epilogue. Without glasses!!! Were they just for the #aesthetic or something? Anyway, I have not been able to stop thinking about this.
5. Yakamoz S-245 (Netflix, 2022- ) - God I love the ‘Sun’s Fucked Up’ Cinematic Universe. It’s just so fun.
Honorable Mentions: House of the Dragon (???? HOW DID I END UP BACK HERE?), Brand New Cherry Flavor (watched because people on tiktok were talking about that one sex scene and I wanted to see what the fuss was about and ended up really enjoying the series as a whole), Cracow Monsters (I have mixed feelings about the direction the series took and feel like it should have been paced better, but the vibes were pretty great), Girls (I rewatched Girls this year don’t @ me, still such a guilty pleasure)
And now. The #Salt:
:readmore:
Films:
1. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (2022, dir. Sam Raimi) - Yeah. I hated it. I already dug into why, you can go back and find a bunch of salty explanation posts and I probably shouldn’t drag this back up but it has to be said. This was definitely my most disappointing film of 2022. Haven’t watched a MCU movie since.
2. Ghosts of War (2020, dir Eric Bress) - This was such a bad bait-and-switch. I was promised a genre meld of war film + ghosts I got a sci-fi, pretty racist mess. Terrible. Don’t watch it.
3. Aftermath (2021, dir Peter Winther) - Another terrible ghost-but-not film. Just let ghosts be ghosts people!
4. Titane (2021, dir. Julia Ducournau) - So disappointing considering Raw made it onto my honorable mentions above! This just felt like it was trying to be two different movies at the same time and spiralled off. I actually liked one of the movies - the machine-obsessed murderer part - but when we spiralled off into the faking being a missing person/pregnancy/weird fire station stuff it completely lost me.
5. The After movies - EXCEPT the second one. Except the second one?’ You ask. Yes. Because the second one is perfect. The second one is exactly what it is like reading those 100 chapter romance fanfics on wattpad. (Though, lol, no I’ve never actually read anything on wattpad. But it’s been the same on ffn, ao3…just the After series was produced by wattpad.) Anyway, the others were terrible, but the second one was probably the most ‘successful’ fanfic movie adaptation I’ve ever seen. It is perfect. But no also so awful. XD
Dishonorable Mentions: Cats (we watched Cats but honestly I don’t remember any of it because I fully blacked out)
The list is a incomplete and a little more complicated for TV because I honestly just stop watching most shows if they don’t hold my attention, so really they’re most just unmemorable.
1. The Sandman (Netflix, 2022- ) - Unpopular opinion, but oof I could not get through this and it started putting me in an actual bad mood whenever I watched it.
2. Moon Knight (Disney+, 2022- ) - This was sort of the canary in the coal mine. Presaged my breakup with the MCU. Just couldn’t hold my attention. Showed a lot of the cracks that I’d been trying to ignore re: Marvel’s pacing and plot issues in their TV series.
3. Andor (Disney+, 2022- ) - Extreme unpopular opinion. This one isn’t very fair, because I do want to give it another shot. I stopped around episode 4 and apparently it gets better from here, but the episodes I watched were not good. I hate to say this but I feel like a lot of the praise is based solely on the cinematography and dialogue writing, both of which are admittedly very good, but the plot is all over the place. Making the first episode so flashback heavy was a huge mistake. Plot threads are introduced and then dropped. Scenes are just dropped in with no connection to what else was going on. I’ll give it another shot, but just having artful cinematography and a few impassioned speeches does not make for great television.
4. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Disney+, 2022) - I feel like people might be surprised to find this on the list because I was posting positively about it as it was coming out. And it’s true, I had fun watching it. But the longer it’s gone on just…the more obvious the cracks have become. First off, it was clearly written as a film and then stretched out into a television show. Which should not be how TV writing works. You can’t just take a long movie and put episode breaks in it. I also over time grew more and more put off but how they copy-and-pasted Fallen Order and then…didn’t mention it at all. It felt…weird. It was just a really weird decision. But like I said, I did really enjoy watching it and I think it’s better than the alternative. Because I keep seeing those early drafts go around and I’m like oh god that would have been so much worse. I think at the time too I was just really relieved that it didn’t go in the direction that I feared and so I initially reacted more favorably. I’m glad they stuck to more of the prequel film canon/vibes, and didn’t pull in too much of TCW stuff. (I know that’s an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t like TCW and I’m always glad for prequel era stuff that is independent of that. Hot take of the post.)
I really mostly feel a bit meh about most of the things I’ve watched this year. Hopefully next year is a much better viewing year!

I haven’t been able to do much the past few days 🤒 but what I feel most bummed about is not being able to workout after working through an injury. I was finally making some progress (after two whole years of a 🦵🏼 injury) but it’s okay. It happens. You only realize how good you had something when you can’t do it 🥲
With exercise you really have to choose something you like, don’t like running? Maybe dance? Don’t like dancing? Maybe kickboxing? 🤷🏻‍♀️
(And hopefully this will inspire you to exercise today if you’re feeling too lazy to exercise but really want to….do it while you can so that you can do it longer 🥲)
I started watching This is Going to Hurt on BBC iPlayer and it’s soooo good!!! I absolutely loved the book and if you did too then you will like the tv show.
A few days ago I finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and what the heck???? I hated it 🤣
I don’t think I am gonna pick up a booktok book again after all the CoHo trauma porn recs and now this, it’s just too much for me 🥲
I mean at the end of the day books are a business and just because certain ones are popular because of it’s marketing, doesn’t mean they’re good….

well...somehow, october’s passed, and so that means another unasked for post about whatever the heck i’ve been watching the past month. so, without further ado:
kdrama:
beyond evil
Tumblr media
.......from now on, just assume i’m always watching beyond evil. that’s all i’m going to say. i’ve already covered this show in this rec post as well as this one, so just....assume that i’m always watching this fucking show. i’ve gotten like three of my irl friends to watch this show, and they’ve all been slowly descending into beyond evil hell with me. watch it.
my name
Tumblr media
okay. so. this show. which i watched in like three days (it’s pretty easy, it’s only 8 eps long). solid action, solid plot, overall a satisfying watch, even if the plot is incredibly predictable. (but predictable is sometimes a good thing! it makes the viewers feel all the more satisfied when they ultimately turn out to be right.) basically, this show is about the young woman yoo ji woo (played by han so hee) who, after the death of her father, takes it upon herself to kill her father’s murderer. she does this by joining a shady organization that her father worked for, and ultimately winds up working from the inside in a police station.
there were a lot of tropes in this show that def. reminded me of my own personal fave action / thriller / revenge-type genre shows (.....there were so many scenes that reminded me of beyond evil.....guys there was a baton scene....fighting back to back......parallels with you can trust me / you can lean on me.......the brainrot is real)--and some callbacks that brought me back to some other famous action movies like the villainess (2017). (there was even a first-person perspective scene, which!!! i go wild for every goddamn time!!)
that said though, the tropes sometimes felt a little repetitive, esp. towards the end, where i basically guessed the ending at around episode six or so. that doesn’t make the show necessarily bad, and again, i enjoyed it. i thought ji woo was a very cool character, one who was complex in that she’s very angry and unhinged but also clearly lonely and struggling with a lot of grief/loneliness still. i will warn that if you’re squeamish around blood, this might be a skip, just because there’s quite a lot of bloody scenes in this show. also a lot of squelchy stabby stabby sounds. i had to lower the volume during some of them, just because it makes the scene that much  more violent--but other than that, i mean? i enjoyed it, and i think this convinced me that han so hee is very well-suited to the action genre. if han so hee wants to continue stabbing men in tv, then let her do it! let her be a little unhinged!
tv:
the chair
Tumblr media
y’know, as a korean-american gal who’s majoring in english and other humanities-related things, i was so happy when i saw this show. it’s just refreshing to see a literal korean american play the chair of the english department, and even more refreshing seeing a show that really captured chaotic academia life. now, i’m not a professor at all, but my uncle and aunt are both professors (albeit in the sciences), so i’ve heard them discuss some of the difficulties of that kind of life, esp. as korean-americans themselves. some of the problems that ji yoon kim (played by sandra oh) faced specifically reminded me a lot of the stuff my aunt personally had to go through, so there was that bit.
but anyways, as for what the show’s about--the chair follows ji yoon kim, who’s now the first appointed female chair of the english department (and most definitely the first woc chair, too). while this is definitely a huge accomplishment, ji yoon’s life is far from perfect--the english department is, as she sums it up, a ticking time bomb, filled with old professors who are still clinging to even older ideals. there’s more stuff in this show too--like ji yoon’s struggle to connect to her non-korean adopted daughter, her complicated feelings for a fellow professor, her struggle to be a voice for her struggling department as well as her students of color, etc. in just six episodes, this show really touched on a lot of different subjects, but i felt that this show handled it all with some grace? i think this show is getting a season 2, which i’m happy about, just because i would like to see more of ji yoon--but either way, i really did enjoy this show.
movies:
warriors of the dawn
Tumblr media
yeah, so...another korean period drama starring yeo jin goo? more likely than you think. this movie is set in 1592 during the imjin war, which is a historical moment i’m not incredibly familiar with--but basically, it follows the story of a group of mercenaries, headed by to woo (lee jung jae), tasked with guiding the crown prince gwang hae (yeo jin goo). prince gwang hae was given this task to travel up to the north by his father the king, who basically abandoned him in this crucial moment in history--so that should give you a sense of what kind of themes are present in this movie.
overall, i liked the movie. i thought it was a little bit longer than i could focus for (a little over 2 hours long), but i was still sad when it ended, you know? and i still shed quite some tears. i found it a bit slow in some parts, but i still found myself drawn to prince gwang hae and to woo. i thought both characters had solid character development throughout the movie, particularly that of gwang hae’s--we see him start off as a very scared prince who comes into his own, albeit with quite some tears. but i really liked that about him, to  be honest. i liked how this movie showed that growth in the face of tragedy and just straight-up bad headspace can be difficult, and idk. something about his character really struck a chord in me, so for that alone, i liked the movie.
so that said, this movie is very much character-driven. there’s def. some battle scenes (a very epic one towards the end), and some good old arrow-flinging, tragic realization of the japanese getting ahold of modernized weapons (ie. muskets) before koreans, etc...but you’ll find yourself more drawn to the characters than anything else, which is honestly a bonus in my book.
descendants 2
Tumblr media
okay. so............full disclosure, i’ve never watched the first descendants movie, but my friends filled in the details for me. i watched this mostly because it was two of my friends’ birthdays, and they’re oddly obsessed with this mini franchise within disney original movies, so i was like “okay, sure, i’ll watch. i’ll probably be multitasking though” and told myself i would write, but instead i found myself getting sucked into the rest of the movie. granted, i’ve got some issues with it (as one usually does with disney), but like...? the songs were all bops, and my friends and i all agreed there was literally nothing straight about this film. literally nothing. that’s all you need to know.
idk if an explanation of the plot is necessary at all, seeing that i think i’ve been living under a rock when it comes to this series of movies, but something something the children of disney villains are all in a kingdom that belongs to the “good guys” of disney....the main character, mal (the daughter of maleficent) struggles with fitting in with the rest of the good people of auradon, and so this leads her to returning back to the isle of the lost (where all the bad guys are exiled and etc). again, i...weirdly liked this movie more than i thought i would? i’ll admit something in me felt kinda....uncomfy with the fact that notably the only black character uma (daughter of ursula) was “angry all the time” and also the villain, and like....that really stood out to me for the course of the movie, so that kinda took away a bit of the magic of the movie for me. (i’ve also been informed that this has happened in the first descendants movie too, so....once again: disney, fix your shit.)
overall though, the plot was interesting. everyone’s definitely queer. music was oddly good? i understand why people ship literally everyone with everyone in this movie series, because everyone’s just very shippable.
a silent voice
Tumblr media
this movie has been recommended to me many times over, and i finally got around to watching it with some friends. i had some mixed feelings watching the movie overall--because i don’t really know how well it dealt with some concepts, but i still appreciated it for what it was. also, the art’s beautiful. also, there was just this one scene that really made me cry a lot.
but anyways, this movie’s about a young deaf girl and her developing relationship with a guy who used to bully her in middle school. after some maturing, the guy winds up being this girl’s friend, and the two find comfort in each other and so on and so forth. there’s a lot of things related to bullying here, and it hurt my heart watching this movie. there were also some themes related to suicide, so that was difficult to watch too.
but in the end, i think i mostly liked the movie. i liked thinking that it was possible for one to heal and stop being frightened of looking at people in the eye and etc.
music:
you signed up for this by maisie peters
Tumblr media
this album came out a little while ago, and i absolutely adore maisie peters, but i didn’t get around to listening to this album until maybe the middle of october? and i immediately got mad at myself for not listening to it sooner, because it’s so...good? maisie peters is def. an artist to keep an eye on, just because her sound is very happy, while her lyrics are incredibly honest + walk that thin line between “god i’m a mess but i’m trying” and it’s just..........i’m here for it. her opening track “you signed up for this” is an absolute bop (”can you tell i’m trying? running out of breath / i know i’ll get better, i’m just not better yet”) and unapologetic, and i’m obsessed with it. other favorites are “i’m trying (not friends)” and “outdoor pool”...but honestly, all of the songs are wonderful, and i’m so excited to see what maisie does with her music, because she’s just so fun to listen to.
when facing things we turn away from by luke hemmings
Tumblr media
i only recently got into luke hemmings on the recommendation from a close friend of mine--so i was really excited when they also told me that hemmings had an album out. like maisie peter’s album, this one has been out for some time, but it was literally over the last weekend of october did i get around to actually listening through the whole thing. there’s something very healing about this album, how it captures a lot of complicated emotions that i can’t always put a finger on. there’s stuff about guilt and imposter syndrome, but there’s also a lot of healing in listening to this album too. favorites include starting line, place in me, bloodline, and comedown. all of these songs are just so...beautifully arranged and put together, and i could tell that hemmings really poured a lot of love into each piece, which made the whole album feel that much more authentic.

I would still like a more detailed review on the 4.1 soundtrack, please and thank you!!
omg hi thank you for taking me up on my dare, @riosnosestud!!
in a word, 4x01′s soundtrack was... forgettable. in two words: what soundtrack?? (hahaha see where i’m going with this? I CAN’T NAME WHICH SCENES HAD SONGS, NOR WHAT THE SONGS EVEN WERE, BECAUSE I DON’T REMEMBER ANY OF EM.)
yes, i’m being a little dramatic, BUT let me explain.
i’ve always considered the gg soundtrack to be one of the show’s characters. it adds personality and emotion. it energizes the montages and heightens the tension. it drives the mood. it’s bangers and bops and heartbreaking ballads!!! it’s memorable as heck. and best of all, it introduces us to songs/artists we’ve never heard of.
(really and truly, music recs are my love language—this obvs includes tv show soundtracks acting as music recs hahaha)
since s3, the soundtrack has lost its potency. and i don’t think it’s not leaving an impact in the same way that it did in s1/s2 (think: ‘blanket me,’ ‘i feel like i’m drowning,’ ‘shake baby shake,’ ‘easy,’ ‘walk away,’ ‘something for your M.I.N.D.,’ etc.). don’t get me wrong, s3 did have a few noteworthy songs (i could wax poetic about the brilliance that is ‘you so done’ by noga erez)—not enough for an entire playlist dedicated to it though!! which again, for me, is uncharacteristic of good girls.
i KNOW the music supervisors have invested more in the instrumental score that’s been woven throughout each episode since s3 (we even hear it a little bit in 4x01), which was... a choice, but i think it’s falling flat. the score focus has left the show’s soundtrack as empty as the abandoned warehouse, the empty loft. as empty as beth’s house even!! and no offense to lucy or turner, but... i’m mourning the soundtrack more than anyone else.
that said, there were actually 5 songs in 4x01:
under pressure — karen o + willie nelson
shadows of the night — pat benatar
sing to me candy — papercuts
nite life — ADULT.
i feel for you — jerry reed
the acoustic ‘under pressure’ cover was actually kind of a fun intro to the season (but believe you me, it got my hopes up a few seconds in and they came crashing down when i realized it was, in fact, an 80′s cover song).
i feel v strongly that they wasted yet another montage song opportunity (but at least it was a mostly dean-focused one? aka not a scene i want to remember, in particular. so i’ll let this one slide.)
papercuts’ ‘sing to me candy’ is what’s playing in rio’s bar (!!!!!!!!) and the more i rewatch and rewatch and, um, rewatch that scene, the more i’m into it? whilst not terribly memorable, it fits the beth x rio x bar scene vibe!!
‘nite life’ is low-key boppy and i guess i was fully distracted by whatever the hell beth was doing with that letter to dean while it was playing?? this one will grow on me!
i honestly don’t remember where the jerry reed song comes in, all i know is that it fits that 70s/80s/90s throwback thing that jonathan leahy has been doing since s3 and i’m ~over~ it.
i’m low-key disappointed to see that the lackluster s3 vibes have carried into 4x01, but i’m curious to see if/how the soundtrack progresses alongside the rest of s4. and i’m really trying to be optimistic!!
with all of that said, i’m actually outlining a weekly, full-on episodic soundtrack review! ideally i’ll get 4x01′s up before 4x02 airs.
so now i’m wondering... how’re the rest of you feeling about 4x01′s soundtrack??

Kdrama recs Part 1
Hullo and welcome to the kdrama life @camsthisky! The following list is not in any particular order, other than the fact that I start with a more rom/com vibe and head toward more romantic/action or action. All the following kdramas are set in the modern day, and part 2 of my recs for you will be either darker kdramas set in present day or historical dramas.
Let the list begin!
Tumblr media
1. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon:
Do Bong Soon is a v smol woman who has super strength and who wants 1. To create her own video game 2. Get her police officer crush to return her affections. Which like, police officer is kinda cute but he ain’t that special. Bong Soon winds up becoming a bodyguard to Ahn Min Hyuk, the extremely rich, kinda spoiled, ridiculously extra CEO of a gaming company who does not like the police for secret reasons, and sadly does not have a good relationship with his family. (He a lonely boy underneath everything.) Min Hyuk finds out about Bong Soon’s powers, is in TOTAL awe of her, offers to train her in fighting, and literally falls head over heels for her.
The caveat with this show is there is a subplot or two that annoy me, BUT I just use the 10 second skip button and it is totally worth it because the romance is super cute—SUPER CUTE (also I have a list of favorite actors and Park Hyung Sik is def on it—one minute he is an adorkable, blushing bby the next he can be intense and sad)
Tumblr media
He cute
2. Her Private Life:
Hello fake-dating!! Ryan Gold (an adoptee who didn’t live in Korea for a while) is a former artist who stopped painting because he couldn’t deal with his Stendhol (?) syndrome (among other traumas). Deok Mi is the classy art curator of a famous museum who definitely does not have any secrets she wants to keep from the world—well, other than the fact that she is the number one fangirl of kpop idol, Cha Shi-an (who also appreciates art) and has a major crush on him. Ryan becomes director of the art museum and there is a whole thing with getting Shi-an involved in an art show.
Following this and a series of unfortunate events a false rumor starts that Deok Mi and and Shi-an ARE dating. It’s a little complicated to summarize, but basically what you need to know is that Ryan and Deok Mi become a fake couple so there won’t be a scandal for Shi-an or violence done to Deok Mi by rabid fangirls. I enjoy the fake-dating trope a lot, and how it becomes real for both of them! The leads are played by Kim Jae Wook and Park Min Young, who both have incredible range. Lots of soft moments in this one! Good kisses, a scene where the faves bake together, and also Ryan wears a lot of deep v-neck shirts and jackets which is an attack on me personally.
The show also contains a bit of angst, which I LOVE. Hand-holding becomes an important theme 😊
Tumblr media
RYAN NO
3. Crash Landing on You: Rich South Korean heiress/fashion designer Se-ri accidentally winds up in a North Korean village, and really REALLY wants to go home. Mostly because there are no scented candles or spa-like bathtubs in the vicinity, but also because she could easily disappear into a NK jail and never return. A North Korean captain named Ri Jeong Hyeok finds her and decides not to turn her because, one, he’s a good guy who doesn’t want to turn an innocent person over to what might be her death, and two, turning her over might get his four underlings in trouble for reasons. Said underlings are his family, basically, and they are a deLIGHT. One is an argumentative proud sort who likes to drink and to feel important and who tries to provoke (and gets provoked by) Se-ri at every opportunity, one is a lover of banned South Korean dramas, one is a 17 year old bby who misses his mom, and one is the silent but most loyal follower of the captain.
Besides all these people, there are two other characters (including a surprisingly wise conman) who become faves and major players in the plot.
There is a great mix of humor, romance, found family, and angst, and I love it very much. A few things don’t go the way I want them to near the end, but a bit of imagination and fanfic can fix anything
ALSO I FORGOT THE CAPTAIN GETS SUPER SULKY FROM TIME TO TIME AND IT IS HILARIOUS
Tumblr media
Show of hands, who thinks they will meet again
4. Are You Human Too: A FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL! TIME!
What do you do when your husband dies and your evil mega-rich father-in-law takes your son away from you and keeps you from seeing him ever? Well, if you are scientist with more genius than positive coping methods, you build yourself a robot son who looks exactly like your real son. Great solution, am I right?
Nam Shin III is the name of my favorite robot son, played by the inestimable Seo Kang Joon. He is the purest bby you will ever meet, being designed so that he never lies and so that he will immediately go to hug anyone who cries. He seems quite a contrast to the bitter human Nam Shin, who hates his gilded prison life, hates his Grandpa, and tries to sneak away from his right hand man, Secretary Ji Young Hoon, his only friend in the world. The girl in the show is Kang So Bong, an ex-UFC fighter who was so badly injured she had to quit. She is at first a bit jaded and mercenary because of her past, but she has a golden heart that just needs to be reminded of its existence.
Not going into details to avoid spoilers, but everything upends when the robot Nam Shin has to take the place of the human Nam Shin. The show is a soft, funny, angsty exploration of what it means to be human, with some good found family throughout. The character development is phenomenal, and the connection between So Bong and Nam Shin III is *chef’s kiss*. I just want to give a shout out to Seo Kang Joon who plays a duel role like you wouldn’t believe, to SKJ’s smile, to the soundtrack, and to the character of Young Hoon, a loyal, steady, and self-sacrificing secretary that we do not deserve  (gosh tho he looks good in blue!)
Tumblr media
Look at my robot son getting a long-looked for affirmation! (his lil smile!!!
5. W: Two Worlds:
This show unique because it  meta as HELL! Oh Yeon Joo is a junior doctor and the daughter of a webtoon artist whose big hit, W, is coming to a close. Much to her surprise, she gets pulled into the world of the comic where she encounters and saves the main character, Kang Chul, a former Olympic shooting champion who was blamed for the murder of his entire family, and whose sole desire is to find the real killer. It’s a good romance between them, and I also love Kang Chul’s relationship with his hyung, which, tho it is not always a main focus, is present and wonderful. Kang Chul himself is both intelligent and adorably bratty, charismatic and angsty, soft and fierce, and he is one of my favorite kdrama characters for sure.
As for the meta, the show does a fantastic job exploring the rules of the comic world, of how one can enter and leave, the importance and power of main characters and supporting characters, and the purpose of an author. There is always another twist coming, and it is just so much fun!
Tumblr media
UM SIR PLS POINT THAT ELSEWHERE
6. Healer:
I watched half this show and never realized that the female lead is played by Park Min Young, same actress as in Her Private Life. Someone had to tell me lol! She’s just so good at playing different people. In this show, she is Chae Young Shin, a reporter for a celebrity tabloid who has big dreams of becoming a famous reporter who investigates stories that actually mean something. She is a bit quirky, very cute, very brave, and probably one of my favorite female leads. She lives with her dad above his coffee/teashop bakery and is friends with all the ex-cons he has defended while doing his other job of lawyering.
Anyway this show is more of a romantic/action drama. To get an idea of the titular Healer, picture what you would get if you took some of Batman and Nightwing’s aesthetics (wearing black, hanging out on rooftops, punching people, flipping around, etc) and put them into a night courier who likes to watch National Geographic and dream about one day going off to an island where he can live all by himself for the rest of his days because oh yeah he is a loner whose only friend is an older woman who sets up his jobs and whom he has never actually met.
There is also an older reporter that Young Shin looks up to, the fun tabloid office where she works, a heck lot of mystery surrounding some tragedy involving a group of reporter best friends/found family back in the 80’s/90’s, and of course both members of the OTP have childhood trauma that has made them who they are today. One of my favorite things that happens in the show is that Healer has to go undercover for a while, Clark Kenting it up in Young Shin’s tabloid office, which overnight becomes a real news agency for reasons.
The action is LOTS of fun, and the romance is really soft and cute, and better still, when there is a misunderstanding or something that gets in their way, they almost immediately talk about it and resolve issues. They TRUST each other and give the benefit of the doubt where many tv couples would break up or get in big fights. I find it (plus the character development) very refreshing.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t find a gif of my favorite fight sadly. This will have to do
7. Lawless Lawyer: This has Lee Joon Gi. Watch it.
Just kidding, there are many other reasons to watch the show, but it is true that Lee Joon Gi is one of my favorite actors. The man has phoenix eyes, a jawline that could cut silk, diamonds, you name it, and such a deep well of emotional acting that it literally kills me when his characters rage/weep/love/etc.
Anyway, in this legal thriller/romance/action drama, LJG’s character Bong Sang Pil is a beautiful, very extra ex-gangster/now lawyer who opens his own office, ready to fight villainy and avenge his mom with the law or with his fists, whichever is more useful at the time. He has a right hand man named Manager Tae and recruits a bunch of thugs as his minions, and they all become a weird sort of family as the show goes on.
Ha Jae Yi is a quiet badass lawyer who has no time for sexist idiots and gets her license suspended for smacking one of said fools. She gets recruited to assist Sang Pil, and they find their goals align as both their mothers were destroyed by the villains.
Speaking of the villains? EXCELLENT acting by them all, like they need to go down obviously, but you can’t help but be in awe of a few of them or even get attached to one or two in a weird way. Props to the show for having one of the best female villains I have ever seen
Tumblr media
What an icon

Here you get two gifs of him

Sorry I needed to make it a magical three lol

Tune in next time for historical dramas and modern dramas that are a bit darker!

This is off topic from tz, but do you have any good shows or movies you recommend? I’m trying to expand my horizons a bit over summer break lol
Hey Anon! Good question! My schedule has been jam-packed lately (and will continue to get even more busy with summer classes starting up for me next week lol) but I can give you a list of some shows and movies that I've watched during this pandemic that I either enjoyed or found interesting lol. I'm not sure what types of films you're into, or if you were interested in more "classics" or B&W films (if so, I can give you some recs for those as well), but here is just a list of some of the movies and series I've watched while in quarantine that I found pretty interesting....
Movies
The Father
The People vs. Billie Holiday
Nomadland (it's LONG and boring lol, but it was actually pretty interesting)
The Manchurian Candidate (just watched this the other night w/Denzel Washington...good movie!)
TENET (I didn't know what the HECK was going on in this movie lol, but it was very interesting lol😂)
Revolutionary Road (really GREAT acting job by Kate & Leo)
Rebecca (if you can stomach Armie Hammer lol -- I watched this BEFORE all of his scandals lol. 😂 Or, you can just watch the B&W version)
Soul
Bombshell
Just Mercy (Great movie)
Oh and I just started watching the Pride & Prejudice series (the old Colin Firth version, not the Kiera Knightly version) since I had never seen it before
As far as Tom's movies (most of his movies I've enjoyed...but here are a list of some of his lesser-mentioned films that I've loved)
In the Heart of the Sea
The Impossible
Edge of Winter
The Current War
Spies in Disguise (don't judge me lol 😂 I thought it was cute lol..and Tom does good voice acting in it lol)
TV Shows/Streaming/Series
The Crown (I'm only on season 2, but so far it's pretty good!)
The Spanish Princess (Loved S1 & S2! -- S1 was a bit better than S2 imo though)
Emily in Paris (LOVED this series!)
Downton Abbey (if you like period pieces)
Designated Survivor (just got into this show on Netflix and it's pretty intense lol....I love it lol)
WandaVision
The Falcon & The Winter Soldier (LOVED this series!)
The Mandalorian
I WANT to see:
The Woman in the Window
To All the Boys I've Loved Before 3 (forgot the title of the third movie 😂)
Loki (When it comes to Disney+)
Mulan
Cruella
A lot of these are just a list of some of the stuff I've watched during this pandemic lol. There are many movies that I've loved just in general over the years though, so if you want more films to watch, then let me know lol. I'm a huge movie fan. :)

If anyone is interested at all... I wrote a story about the “sweet angelic” character. from the TS shorts video
Title: I did not think of a name for this and I have to get ready for work so call it whatever you want. Pairings: LAMP No Warnings needed I don’t believe. This one is pretty chill.
Roman was sound asleep, when the door to the imagination popped open and out stepped a bright eyed, freckled, little wisp of a thing. The boy looked around Romans luxurious bedroom taking in the art and majesty of it all before remembering why he was there.
He walked over to the bed and leaned over the sleeping prince. He gave him a light nudge and smiled giddly as the prince murmured a bit but never fully woke up. He wrinkled his nose and stuck out his tongue a bit ah! he had it! He climbed onto the bed with him and straddled the princes hips and leaned over him.
“Excuse me! im looking for King Creativity!” he all but shouted in the sleeping mans face. That got Romans attention real quick and he shot up so fast he slammed his head on the bookshelf above him. Damn Logan for insisting he install one that close to his bed. He groaned and flopped back down not opening his eyes. “Patton?” he guessed then peaked an eye open. The boy on him giggled and shook his head. “I don’t think so.” He sat up a bit more eyes widening and taking in the boy in front of him, “ w-who are you!?” He demanded, Roman pulling the covers up his body as best he could. The boy shrugged. “wait I know you, aren't you a character from a shorts episode?” Roman asked groggily relaxing a bit. This was too much to deal with before breakfast. “yeah! I’m a little…lost…Someone told me I needed to talk to the king?” Roman sighed “I’m not the king, you must have talked to someone very old in there but…. I’m Prince Roman and the ruler of the light side of the imagination so…I mean you are in the right place.” he assured them rubbing his eyes.
“oh goody!” he bounced a little but paused when a hand came down on his shoulder and he turned to see a very pissed off purple clad man holding a bowl of cereal behind him. “Hi! Who the hell are you?!” he snapped angerly. “Hi! oh! forgive me I was just helping the Prince wake up.” the boy said cheerfully. “whow! Virge nope, nope see my hands? no touchy touchy!” Roman said holding his hands out to show nothing was happening. “Well let me make a few things clear to you about who is and is not allowed to be straddling that prince in that bed.” Virgil growled bending the spoon in his hand so much it broke and fell to the floor. “Easy Vee, but yeah get off me.” Roman gently picked up the boy and set him over to the side of the bed and sat up. “he is just a creation Virge, remember the shorts video a few days ago, that’s why he is here. You’re lost?” The boy nodded his head “my…frenemie was with me but we got separated…and… I’ve been wandering around but I can’t find him and I can’t find….anything… I don’t know where I’m supposed to go…” he said sadly looking down as his lip started to tremble a bit. “oh hey, It’s okay listen, The shorts have a village where they all live It’s on the north side of the main village and up Disney drive, go past the waterfall and there is a fork in the road the right leads to Lego land and the left goes to the village where all the characters who have been in Thomas’ short videos live.” he calmly explained.
Patton and Logan came in a minute later with coffee and stopped short at the door. “ whats going on?” Logan asked observing the situation and taking in their new guest. “ooo whos this now?” Patton asked approaching the boy.  The boy gave him a smile and a wave. “Hi! im new!” “Hi new im dad!” Patton laughed. “whats your real name kiddo?” the boys smile faltered and he looked nervous again. Virgil could feel it in the air slightly and sighed. Gently he waved his hand and letting a calming aroma of lavender to fill the room. The boy took a deep breath and smiled softly again. “I don’t have a name…” he confessed. “Can you give me a name?” he asked Roman hopefully. “well um…I think…perhaps we should just bring you to see Thomas and let him name you.” he suggested patting the boys head. The boys eyes widened . “no! im not going to bother Thomas! he only created me for a short silly video he doesn’t want to see me again!” he blushed. “well actually if you want to get technical Roman created you but Thomas and Roman both worked together to help make you a reality or…a figment of his imagination…It is WAY too early for this…” Logan grumbled. “Still this…doesn’t have to involve him we can just….not do that…I mean what if he decides to just get rid of me all together because I’m making trouble.” he said nervously. “h-have you ever…met Thomas? He is not like that, I was the biggest thorn in his side for the longest time and he still gave me a chance and now we are best friends. He is very forgiving and very sweet, trust me as someone who thought those same thoughts for a lot of years  I can tell you with 100% confidence he will not banish you or hurt you or yell at you or anything you are thinking of.” Virgil explained softly as he gently touched the friendship bracelet on his arm Thomas had made for him. He sat on the bed next to him so he wasn't looming over the newcomer. The boy launched himself into Virgil's arms immediately to hug him. “oh! okay we are doing this now, wow, okay, your okay.” he said wide eyed mouthing ‘what the heck’ to the others behind the boy. “there there come on now lets go see Thomas.” he said patting the guys shoulder. “your SURE he isn’t busy?” he asked one more time. “busy doing what? Watching Parks n Rec in his underwear eating pizza? no your fine come on” Virgil took the guys arm gently leading him to the real world.
“Thomas we have a bit of a dilemma” Logan said as he rose up. The others rose up as well and Thomas we indeed right where Logan said he would be. “see does that look intimidating to you?” Logan asked gesturing to Thomas. “hey guys! want to watch Casper with me? it just started.”  he grinned and sat up pausing the show. “ohhh nostalgia!” Patton about squealed. “whos he?” Thomas asked pointing over to the boy. The boy shook his head and stepped behind Logan a bit. “aw hey no come on its alright, I just wanted to know your name.” Thomas coaxed gently. “I-I don’t have one….Sir…” Virgil snickered at that and Patton lightly smacked him in the back of the head. giving him a scolding look. “whow easy, Thomas is just fine.” he laughed. “so you don’t have a name right I don’t think I ever gave you one. you’re from that short video about characters that I made the other day, where's your friend or lover or whatever?” he asked looking around. “I don’t know they are lost somewhere in the imagination too I think.” “fear not, for we are going to find them later when I escort him to the village for the short video characters.” Roman explained. “See there ya go, Roman will take care of you, he is a smart and savvy prince and my hero.” Thomas said smiling softly. “Roman you’re blushing.” the bespeckled man whispered. “shut up” he murmured back not breaking eye contact with Thomas. “So does that offer still stand to watch the movie?” Patton asked hopping a bit excitedly. “ sure absolutely come on over and find a spot.” They all clamored over and got comfy as Thomas hit play on the TV. The boy had never watched anything before and was completely enamored. bouncing giddly at some parts and looking slightly frightened at others.
When it was over Virgil and Patton were asleep snuggled up on the couch and Logan was leaning on Roman barely awake. “are you awake love?” Roman murmured. “mmhmm” Logan replied but never opened his eyes.  Roman smiled and kissed his cheek softly before gently picking him up and laying him on the couch and covering everyone up. “how you feeling dude?” Roman asked the guy. “that was so much fun!” he replied giddy as ever. “thank you so much for inviting me!” he smiled to both Roman and Thomas. “you are very welcome uh…huh we still never gave you a name…” Thomas pondered. The man picked up the movie case and looked at it… can…can it be Casper?“ He asked smiling softly. ”you-  yeah! absolutely! I think that is a wonderful name!“ Thomas smiled. Casper beamed and gave Thomas a hug too. woo this kid was going to give Patton a run for his money as the number one huggy person in the whole Thomasphere. ”Okay Casper lets get you back to the village I bet your…friend? lover?…something is waiting for you and getting worried.“ Roman smiled taking him back into his room and back into the imagination.
”THERE YOU ARE. don’t you ever run off again, I was scared out of my mind!“ the ‘badass hellspawn of a character’ called running over and hugging Casper. ”I’m okay but boy do I have a lot to tell you about. come on. thanks Roman! thank you for everything!“ He took his friend/lovers and gave Roman a wave before walking into the newly formed house in the village.
Roman smiled and made his way back into his room to see everyone had migrated to his bed. good thing it was a king sized.  He sighed and snapped into some PJs and wiggled his way into the middle of his boyfriends. He wrapped an arm around Patton and leaned back on Virgil trying not to put his feet directly on Logan. He sighed as he unsuccessfully fought for some cover. They were so lucky they were all cute. Patton murmured something about cookies and Roman smiled and closed his eyes drifting off to sleep.  The End.

so you read Red White and Royal Blue and want to know what to read next:
I am a big reader. So when I read rwrb and fell in love I was struggling with reading anything else afterward because of how i fucking love every single moment of that book. I'm assuming y’all have the same feelings or are interested in getting into more books (or both!) so (tldr) here are some books!
So you have fallen in love with royalty:
The Captive Prince series by cs pacat! Um fair warning it seems like total pwp, but I promise it is so much more! It’s a really great queer political drama.
The Royal We by Heather Cox and Jessica Morgan! This is another royal rom-com with a relationship that is based on Kate Middleton and William. Casey read it and it inspired rwrb.
Her Royal Highness. A YA novel set at a Scottish boarding school. Another great queer love story with some quality modern royalty.
Some other bi-disasters:
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. Another YA book. Kinda like if drarry was canon but also totally different. I’d also recommending reading fangirl, very different book but one of my favorites!
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee. Don’t let the summary of this book fool you. This is one of my all-time favorites. Ahhh so complex, just so good. Also, there is a sequel starring felicity who is the main character's sister!
Other great LGBTQ books:
Check, Please! By Ngozi. A webcomic so it’s free online too. I am obsessed and the fandom is pretty lively. Also hockey. H O C K E Y
Heartstopper by Alice Osmond. Once again another webcomic so free online. It’s so cute BUT also goes pretty deep into some topics, also has a coming out story too.
Bloom by Kevin Panetta. This book gave me so many emotions. Also, it’s a graphic novel
I wish you all the best by Mason Deaver. Casey and Mason are friends which is super cool too. This book focuses on a non-binary teen and their coming out story. It was so emotional and pretty draining but such an amazing read.
Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi. The most recent book I read, it’s a story about culture, film, and it’s good and gay.
There Goes Sunday School by Alexander C. Eberhart. I read this a year ago but I had a really hard time getting over it. Man, it was so good and it really deserves more love.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This book is a total classic and a must-read in YA. SUPER WELL WRITTEN.
Politics:
Not going to Lie, I haven’t read that many political books. But I can recommend a couple of tv shows!
The West Wing. This is one of my favorites if not my legit favorite tv show. It is so good and it just makes you fall in love with the White House. Also, June’s name was inspired by CJ Cregg who is the press secretary.
Parks and Rec. You maybe like what the heck is this doing here but man this show is legit.
Books from others!
We contain multitudes by Sarah Henstra
All books by Becky Albertali (I’ve read love Simon but no others)
A few other people gave me some book recs and I can’t find them :( so sorry y’all. Feel free to add on anything that you feel like i missed. I’ll will def be adding stuff on as I remember more.

Tag Game: Get to Know Me
I was tagged by the amazing @bananase221 (yet again about 300 years ago i am so sorry but thank you so much for the tag ily)
Relationship status: single as heck
Favourite colour: honestly black makes my soul happy but i also kind of like red and light blue and ?????? probably black overall though
Three favourite foods: i don’t really like food oops but if i had to choose probably kiwi and strawberries and cheese
Song stuck in my head: No volveré and Si te vas by Blas Cantó because my brain is a radio and there is always more than one song knocking around up there
Last song I listened to: well i’m currently listening to Loch Lomond by Peter Hollens because his version is *chef’s kiss*
oh wait now i’m listening to the version of Mo Ghille Mear done by The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin (aka everyone’s favourite specsavers advert song) so technically this but you can have both because i’m feeling generous <3
Last film I watched: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Last TV show I watched: Parks and Rec which i am currently re watching because honestly why wouldn’t you
Favourite character(s): oh, oh boy, this could get long so i might group a bit but here goes - basically every main character in Merlin except Uther because fuck Uther, oh and Kilgharrah cos, well, he’s Kilgharrah (and yes we are pretending Morgana and Mordred are good™ because they had potential ok), i’d be lying if i didn’t include Steve Harrington and Billy Hargrove and Joyce Byers (Stranger Things) because i utterly adore them, Ben Wyatt (Parks and Rec) because why wouldn’t you love this pure, nervous ball of calzone loving energy and probably thousands more that i now can’t remember because my brain is refusing to help me fml but just assume a lot because i have no irl friends so i, very unhealthily, latch on to fictional characters xox
Favourite book(s): i honestly don’t know how people choose because books! are! so! good! so i’m just going to rec you two merthur fics i have utterly fallen in love with (which yes isn’t really the question but i’ve been reading more fic than books recently and i am in love) - And like the cycle of the year, we begin again by katherynefromphilly (which i have just re read and am as equally in love with as i was the first time and i highly recommend you reading this if you haven’t already because it is FANTASTIC) and About Time by rosewatergold (which i literally finished this morning and when i tell you i didn’t want it to end oh my god, this whole thing is amazing and i laughed and cried and let my heart almost burst out of my damn chest and curled up in a ball of emotional turmoil many many times and i just, i couldn’t recommend this more if i tried)
Sweet, savoury, or spicy food: oh in this house we do not do spicy food, no no no, but i’ll take sweet or savoury tbh, i don’t have an overly sweet tooth and am a sucker for savoury cheese things so *shrugs*
Last thing I googled: oh my god the fucking ™ symbol thing so i could use it above lmao am i edgy yet xox
Time: 00:54
Pets: Dog called Dooley and yes i am providing pictures because i love him and he is my world
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(yes i made him neckerchief's and yes we have to wrap him up in blankets in winter because he's a lurcher and they have like zero body fat so get cold and it results in his lil ET face everytime)
Dream trip: ok look i just want to see the world, like just up and leave home for a good few years and see, but i would also settle for a trip around scandinavia because i am a BIG scandi lover
Anything you want/one thing on your bucket list: hmmm i mean a job would be great (thanks 2020 xox) lmao but i would absolutely LOVE to go to a eurovision final and see it live (me? a eurovision fan? who knew)
Favourite festival(s) you celebrate: i mean it is absolutely no secret at all that i love and adore halloween an unhealthy amount (but it’s not really a massive thing in england so i don’t really get to celebrate it to my hearts content unfortunately), but i also love christmas so there’s that
also yes i am including the eurovision final as something i celebrate and again, whilst i can’t go as wild as my heart desires because there’s only a certain level of weird my family can take from me, you can bet i go nuts and look forward to it a, yet again, unhealthy amount (but what would i be without unhealthy obsessions over things?)
Tagging: @thursday-knight @harringtons-bf @coffeedumpling @italiansteebie @wndasmaximoffs @hellomynameisroman @absolutedad and anyone else who fancies it, like literally just say i tagged you, but also pls do not feel pressured to do this at all, the choice is all yours okay ily bye

Welcome to Queering Lit Up!
the purpose of this blog
is to be a resource for readers and writers of LGBTQ+ literature (specifically with that ‘Q+’ cuz damn we have a lot of letters- which is awesome, but still overwhelming), but primarily I want it to be a resource for myself. I have found that the best results come from doing something for yourself, even (and sometimes especially) with the intent of sharing it with others, whether it is writing a fanfic or an original story or even, dare I say it, making a blog! Why create something that is of no use to you, or that you are not passionate enough about to be willing to do regardless of publicity?
This blog, while primarily intended to help myself, can be of use to anyone who stumbles across it. It could connect someone to books that speak the language of their soul, that teach them things about themself (or others) that they may have never learned otherwise, or even books that just make their day a little better. It could help someone continue writing something they were stuck on that ends up being a spectacular piece that echoes within its readers for years to come (or at least a few days, let’s be somewhat realistic here). It could help someone better understand people by connecting them to a book that helps explain the differences while still showing that person as a person. It could help a writer find a publisher who in turn finds them a greatly-appreciative audience. It could do a lot of things! ^^
I started this blog for an English class in college, oddly enough, though I do intend to actually use it. To be honest I started off wanting to research LGBTQ+ literature, but since I searched a more general term (”media”) I ended up being sucked down the rabbit hole of the severe lack of rep on tv and in films.
And, well. There’s not all that much I can do about that, is there? From what I can tell it’s mostly GLAAD’s territory at this point (literally all of the articles I found talking about it linked back to GLAAD). So I switched back to books, cuz I wanna be a writer and compiling writing tips and reading recs will actually be quite useful to me. If I ever, y’know, sit down and churn out a book (I was working on one with a bisexual college student with some interesting curses/blessings traversing the realms of the gods in between classes and completing stupid quests to get information, but now I’m obsessed with one inspired by Bewitched with sapphics who, at the witch’s insistence, adopt a cat, and, at the mortal’s insistence, adopt a demon baby… and also can you imagine Rapunzel as a trans girl who made a wish to never have her hair cut again???).
Yeah I go off topic a lot, lol. Good hecking luck following my writing! :)))
Anyway. Now I’m going to be making posts with book recs, writing tips, and good resources!
Hopefully. We’ll see. All the poor people subscribed to my fanfics on ao3 know how infrequently I update… BUT FOR THE RECORD I’M 5K INTO CHAPTER THREE OF ONE OF MY MANY WIPS RN OKAY.
Oh yeah and of course I’ll reblog things I think are useful! \(^-^)/
(TL;DR- this is basically a writeblr with book recs and writing tips specifically for queer and diverse stuff. ALSO: feel free to send me book recs or questions! :)

Do you have any podcasts youd recommend? I've been listening to TMA and am caught up, otherwise the only other ones i listen to are mcelroy podcasts. Do you happen to have any podcasts you like and would just rec. In general?
(Updated 8/25/20)
HECK YEAH I do! For you and anyone else who’s looking for something new, keeping in mind I lean towards the horror genre, but here’s a mixed bag:
Podcasts I have finished/caught up on/can fully rec:
Welcome to Night Vale (first podcast I ever listened to, and the only one I listened to for a long time. Mixed radio show/narrative fiction style with a real cozy comforting sort of spooky atmosphere and there are so many E M O T I O N S. Probably THE most well-known, if you haven’t listened yet, definitely give it a try)
The Magnus Archives (you already said this one, but it’s very good horror and everyone should give it a chance. It’s pretty much the flipside of WTNV, with plenty of mystery, intrigue and creeping dread. Don’t let the first 20 or so eps fool you; it isn’t an anthology and the plot spirals deeper and deeper and it gets pretty depressing sometimes actually)
Unwell, a Midwestern Gothic Mystery (You want an explicitly mixed black female wlw lead who gets a Latina gf?? Explicit they/them NB rep?? Spooky queerness?? A haunted small town boarding house with ghosts and weird doors?? And a celery festival?? This one's for you. Oh there's also a cult. So far it's a great balance of uneasy creepiness and good slice of life with a full cast of colorful characters, and the town's name slaps. Mt. Absalom?? Hello?? Has serious moments that will hurt you, too)
Limetown (COMPLETE. short thriller/mystery type, interesting story about an entire small community that goes missing, has a TV series now I think?)
Wolf 359 (COMPLETE. AMAZING radio drama one of my good friends who always recs good things rec’d to me and now I rec to YOU. you won’t regret listening if you like great stories and upbeat sci fi comedies that go horribly, horribly wrong. IN SPACE.)
I Am In Eskew (COMPLETE. Really good casual yet seriously fucked up foray into Lovecraftian psychological horror centering around a living city called Eskew and its horrible and equally despondent occupants and occurrences. Follows two voiced characters whose paths eventually converge. It's sort of depressing and hurt my heart sometimes for the sheer hopelessness, but it's worth the journey.)
Podcasts I like but have not caught up on:
Old Gods of Appalachia (old country american horror anthology)
King Falls AM (cozy little small town late night radio show with a colorful cast of characters and plenty of spooks)
Wrong Station (vintage radio show style horror anthology based on old TV and radio shows of the same flavor. but modern.)
The Lost Cat Podcast (Lighthearted horror (yeah it exists) and existentialism revolving around the narrator and his lost cat and many glasses of wine. There are many cats. I mean a lot. If you don't want depressing scary horror but still want to step into a world of kooky spooky Eldritch supernatural stuff and relevant musical interludes per episode, this is the way to go. I'm not very far along but it's a fun time.)
The Bridge (interesting setting and story premise. It’s a whole system of bridges across the Atlantic. come on. oh, but make sure you find the right one. it isn’t the talk show about politics and news)
Rusty Quill Gaming (had a hankering for familiar voices during the TMA hiatus and since this has some TMA voice actors in it I gave it a try. First rpg podcast I’ve listened to, but I fell in love with their campaign and characters)
Podcasts I have NOT listened to but they look good/I’ve heard things/they’re by the same creators of series I enjoy:
Dreamboy (Night Vale Presents)
Alice Isn’t Dead (Night Vale Presents)
Within the Wires (Night Vale Presents)
Stellar Firma (Rusty Quill)
Zero Hours (Wolf 359 creator/cast)
ars Paradoxica (friend who rec’d Wolf 359 to me mentioned this one so I trust it)
Death By Dying
The White Vault
The Bright Sessions
The Black Tapes
Blackwood
Archive 81
Sayer
Wooden Overcoats
The Penumbra Podcast (I hear EXCELLENT things about this one)
The Adventure Zone and other McElroy podcasts (more of a note to self. I really need to start listening to them boys)
That’s about it, that’s my current lineup for listening and as many as I know. Y’all feel free to reblog with more recs or more info on the ones I haven’t listened to.
Hope you find something you enjoy, anon!
