I made this piece so that people could feel the beauty of black lacquer, gold Maki-e, and inlaid mother of pearl. Maki-e and inlaid mother of pearl are said to have been established in the Nara Period (710 to 784). I used these techniques, which have been faithfully passed down through the generations, to skillfully create shapes and designs that are not typical of traditional lacquerware.

PART 1. GINTAMA IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Before I start let me warn you that everything below is my own opinion and come from some research that I have done. My main references are Wikipedia and the historical youtube channels: Let's Ask Shogo, and Linfamy. I am but an armchair historian who's just started dipping their toes in the fascinating and chaotic history of Japan. Take everything I say with a grain of salt. To be honest I'm just copying information I find on the internet and creating arguments which will hopefully make sense.
In this essay, I delve into the historical context behind Edo in Gintama world and where Sakata Gintoki seem to fit in the social order.
This is the first of three part series of essays.
PART 2 SHIMURA FAMILY IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT
PART 3 MARTIAL SKILLS OF TAE SHIMURA
Read at your own risk.
Gintama is a weird hybrid mix of
Late Edo Period / Late Tokugawa Shogunate Period (18th-19th century
Bakumatsu Period (1853-1867): Decline and Downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate when Japan ended its isolationist foreign policy known as sakoku and changed from a feudal Tokugawa shogunate to the modern empire of the Meiji government. The major ideological-political divide during this period was between the pro-imperial nationalists called ishin shishi and the shogunate forces, which included the elite shinsengumi swordsmen.
Meiji Restoration policies (1868-1912) specifically the dissolution of the shogunate and samurai class and decline of traditional martial arts in favor of western warfare.
Post WW2 japanese economic miracle (1946-1954) - seen in the rapid increase in trade and commerce brought upon by foreign investors.
Early 2000's - because they had flipphones with SMS and computers, etc
Space Travel and Interstellar transportation.
Social classes in the Edo Period/Tokugawa Shogunate were divided into 4 (or 6) stratas.
Tumblr media
A. FIGUREHEAD/ NOMINAL RULING COURT
Emperor
Court Nobility
B. MILITARY LEADER AND ACTUAL RULING CLASS
Shogun - Shigeshige, Sadasada
Daimyo (feudal lord) - subdivided into 3 classes (shinpan, fudai, tozama)
Nobunobu (heir to shogun because he came from one of the shinpan daimyos),
Matsudaira Katakuriko (based from Matsudaira Katamori who was shinpan daimyo of Aizu),
Yagyuu Koshinori (based from Yagyu Tajima no Munenori, the minor fudai daimyo of Nara)
All daimyos and their families were required by law to reside in Edo. Top Daimyos in particular lived in Edo for one year and in their provincial dominion in the next year. They made the cumbersome travel from edo and their provincial domain in alternate years which is very annoying and expensive. This was one the methods how the shogunate kept the peace. Keeping the daimyos' wives and children in the capital as hostages in their estates meant that they won't become too powerful in the provinces.
Samurai
further subdivided depending on their salary (koku stipend). Many worked as retainers for the daimyos and their clans- ex. Shimura, Takasugi, Katsura, Hijikata, Kondou, Hattori, Toujo and the other top samurais of Yagyuu clan.
became civil servants and bureaucrats - Hasegawa
Special Samurai that were direct vassals of shogun were called Hatamoto - in late Edo period, all top Shinsengumi officials became Hatamoto samurai.
Accdg to Gintama world, only the samurai/bakufu officials were allowed to bear swords. The 10-20 years of struggle between shogunate and Joui rebel factions deemed samurai too dangerous. Dojos closed down because there was no use for kenjutsu anymore and samurai became scarce.
In reality, Edo period/Tokugawa Shogunate had very strict gun laws. Peasants/merchants were only allowed guns for hunting and pest control. Samurais were allowed firearms though. Aside from possessing firearms, only samurais were allowed the distinction of carrying two swords: katana and wakizashi on their person at all times.
During the Meiji restoration, the shogunate and samurai class were dissolved and a national army based on western warfare was established. Jutsu or martial arts fell into decline as an unpopular reminder of the past. To prevent the various martial art cultures from being lost completely, they were converted into "Do" (meaning 'The Way'), focusing more on following perfection in mind and self rather than for purely militaristic self-defense or attack. Hence many Jutsu schools became Dojo ("place for the Way").
C. PEASANTS
meaning farmers, etc.
Samurai who did not want to be retainers became peasants. This social class lived in the daimyos' rural provinces and is the main source of tax (rice). This class became wealthy and powerful in the Late Edo Period.
D. CRAFTSMENT/ARTISANS - provided weapons and supplies to the shogunate. Ex. Gengai, Tetsuko the Blacksmith
E. MERCHANTS Tatsuma, Ikumatsu, Okita Mitsuba's fiance, family of Hasegawa's wife, Otose (?)
Merchants were considered the lowest in the social class because they handled money. However In later half of Edo period, farmers and merchant classes became very rich due to trade. Compared to Samurai class who had to strictly adhere to buddhist and neo-confuncian teachings of frugality and disdain for wealth, the fact that farmers and merchants handled products and money daily, gave them a bit more freedom. These families became so powerful while many of lower ranked samurais lived in poverty. By the way irl Edo period, merchants and peasants can wield bladed weapons shorter than a katana. Wakizashis and Tantos were popular for self defense!
6. OUTSIDE SOCIAL CLASSES - had professions that were considered taboo by Buddhism. These lower classes were only allowed in special quarters of the city and have to wear specific types of clothing.
Eta - "Dirty" coz they handled blood and death (ex. butchers, tanners, undertakers)
Hinin - "not even human" coz they cleaned up human waste (ex. town guards, street cleaners, executioners)
others - considered the lowest social class and are only allowed in specific quarters of the urban areas (ex. beggars, entertainers, prostitutes) - Hinowa, Tsukuyo, etc.
many of these outside social classes will later evolve into the burakumin, a heavily marginalized "caste" of japanese society which still exist to this day.
ABOUT EDO AND GINTAMA'S VERSION OF IT
Only the peasants/farmers lived in the rural areas. Samurai, craftsmen and merchants lived in the urban centers that were built around daimyo castles, each restricted to their own quarter.
I believe this is why Edo was the setting for Gintama. The place was the seat of military and economic power for the shogunate. As mentioned, all the daimyos lived in the area as well as their top retainers. This is why the Shigeshige, Matsudaira, Yagyuu and Hattori leaders were all found in one place.
In Gintama we can also see why many characters lived in Special wards like Kabukichou and Yoshiwara. Crafters, merchants, entertainers, businessmen for Kabukichou and the prostitutes are in Yoshiwara.
SAKATA GINTOKI
In reality, Sakata Gintoki would be considered a (1) beggar as a kid, gained prestige as a powerful (2) ronin or runaway samurai as a teenager (see notes) and then became a (3) merchant class as an adult. He was an orphan with dubious origins and he obtained education and kenjutsu training smh from a terakoya/temple school. Temple schools were more commonly attended by peasant and merchant families. Landless samurais like Shoyo and Kondou's monkey master usually taught in these.
Gintoki was really technically not allowed to bear a katana in public if we were talking in historical terms. Him carrying a bokuto is fine both in context of the show and in reality though, since he's basically still a fugitive and shouldn't draw attention of the bakufu to himself.
NOTES:
I didn't expect this to be a historical infodump but here we are. I learned a lot though. I never had that much interest in Edo Period / Meiji restoration before but I needed to research for this.
Sorachi says Gintoki is a real samurai, so maybe there may have been a retainer clan that went by that surname and only gintoki survived. HOWEVER Gintoki never served under any daimyo/feudal lord so he cannot be a samurai by law, therefore he cannot be ronin either. Idk. In gintama, everyone can be their own samurai if they have bushido in their heart lol.

What You Didn't Know about Ninjas
The West
Tumblr media
(Pic Source : SEGA Screenshot)
The first time I knew about Ninja was from my childhood SEGA game, Revenge of the Shinobi. After that I love watching the 80s Hollywood films like Sho Kosugi’s Revenge of the Ninja and Michael Dudikoff’s American Ninja.
Lucinda Dickey’s Ninja Domination used to freak me out as a kid with those “black magic” scenes. And in the 80s GI JOE cartoons, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were my favorite characters because they’re Ninjas!
So I became curious to know what are Ninjas? Where do they come from?
The East
Tumblr media
(Pic Source : Trip Savvy)
Apparently, Ninjas existed since Ancient Japan but only became popular during the Warring Period of Sengoku Jidai due to their prominent roles as spies and assassins that affects the war that will forever change the course of history.
Without spies, Daimyo (Lords) will not be able to make critical decisions that will affect the outcome of the battle and without assassins, key Samurai like Kato Kiyomasa, the guardian of Toyotomi Hideyori will still be alive.
There were a few failed attempts in assassinating Tokugawa Ieyasu. Can you imagine if he actually died during Sekigahara? Kobayakawa Hideaki will not be influenced by Tokugawa and remained with the Toyotomi ensuring their victory.
The Ninjas continued to exist during the peace time of Edo Period, acting as spies for the Tokugawa Shogunate, to keep an eye on the Daimyo (Lords) across Japan to prevent potential uprising that will disrupt the peace.
Types of Ninjas
Tumblr media
(Pic Source : Japan Travel)
There are 2 types of Ninjas :
Mie Prefecture's Iga-ryu ninja
Shiga Prefecture's Koka-ryu ninja
From what I understand is that, Iga Ninjas are famous for the legendary Hattori Hanzō, who served Tokugawa Ieyasu and Iga is known for their highly trained and proficient Ninjas that could sneak in anywhere and anytime undetected.
Koka Ninjas are not as highly trained or highly equipped as they are mostly farmers and merchants. They served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, (who used to be a peasant) acting as his spies and keep an eye on Tokugawa and his Ninjas.
Cool eh?
Ninja or Shinobi?
They were known since Ancient Japan as "shinobi". The term "ninja" was only popularized in the Taisho Period (1912 - 1926).
Speaking in terms of eras, the ninja were called "kanja" in the Warring States Period, and "onmitsu" in the Edo period.
Looking by the region, they were also called "suppa" in Kyoto and Nara Prefectures, and "shinobi" in Fukui Prefecture.
Today
Tumblr media
(Pic Source : Nindo, Ninja Academy)
Do they still exist?
Jinichi Kawakami, the head of Banke Shinobinoden, is the second last sōke and only heir to authentic ninjutsu. He is said to be the 21st head of the Koga Ban family, a mercenary, and the honorary director of the Iga-ryu Ninja Museum.
He appeared in You Tube channel, Asian Boss and has his own channel, Nindo Channel. One of his apprentice taught Keanu Reeves for his film, John Wick 3 where his character fought with a Ninja (Mark Dacasacos).
The child in me would like to believe they still exist, continuing their shadowy works to this day, in places that we can hardly see or imagine.
Like in the recent movie, Snake Eyes where the Arashikage Clan is said to have been keeping the country in checked for generations, to ensure peace.
More info about Ninjas can be found here.

Anime Central 2021 Panels (...maybe)
Soooo ACEN has moved online this year, and is running their virtual con split between Twitch and Discord this weekend.
As we had provided some of the cultural content last year, ASIHTB was asked if we could provide a selection of pre-recorded educational and cultural programming for this year's event. Which we did, even bringing in authors and cultural experts to contribute more diverse content!
But when I checked the programming schedule to see when I needed to be online for the live panel Q&A, I discovered that of the 26 presentations we sent in, only two were actually listed on the final panel schedule. 😕 Laura was told by staff that more of our programs were going be added to the schedule, but it's now the day of the con and the schedule has never been updated, so I have no idea when, where, or if the rest of our videos will be run.
If ACEN doesn't show the videos, I suppose we can just put them up on our YouTube channel so you can watch them there after the con. (Bonus ASIHTB con!) In any case, here's the complete list of everything we prepared/recorded for the convention, along with panel times if we have them. For the rest... uh, I guess they might still be run off-schedule, or as filler or something? So keep an eye out if you're participating in ACEN Online.
Japanese Folklore and Mythology
Time: Friday, May 19 @ 4:30 PM CST (Discord)
What’s the difference between bakemono and ayakashi? Who’s that Pokémon, and why is it in a 200-year-old woodblock print? Does the story of Sailor Moon actually predate the Norman conquest of England? (Spoiler: YES, it does!) Get the most from your animé and Asian cinema experience when you understand the cultural background! Learn about Japanese mythology in this folklore primer, illustrated with video clips from animé and Japanese film.
Go West! The Saiyuki Legend
Time: Saturday, May 20 @ 3:30 PM CST (Discord)
From Dragon Ball to Gensoumaden Saiyuki, there's no shortage of adaptations, retellings, and wholesale lifts of one of the world's most popular folk tales. But most of the western world enjoying these retellings knows little of the original novel, and even less of the stories it itself combined and retold.
Let's look at the historic and cultural context for the original 16th century novel and the lore it collected into a single tale. We'll discuss some key adaptations as well, with the knowledge to enjoy them more.
The Phantom Thief: An Illustrated History
Time: ???
How did Edgar Allen Poe influence Sailor Moon? What do Norse gods, Joan of Arc, and Lupin III have in common? Who was the real-life Moriarty? Learn the origin of the kaitou, Japan’s archetypal thief, from his birth in Gilded Age literature to his high-tech 21st century incarnations. Follow this truly international antihero’s development through history with examples from animé, manga, film, and literature.
Patterns Lie! And Other Useful Sewing Facts
Time: ???
Learning to sew can be daunting, especially if you’ve never had formal instruction. We’re here to help! In this panel, we’ll cover selecting and reading a pattern, choosing fabric, cutting, pinning, sewing, pressing, finishing hems, and more — all without complicated sewing terminology! You’ll be sewing like a pro in no time. Bring your questions!
The History of Ramen
Time: ???
Favored by broke college students everywhere, ramen has a reputation as a cheap convenience food. But these twisty noodles actually have a fascinating history! Learn about ramen's (surprisingly recent) development and cultural background in this tasty presentation.
Ninja in History
Time: ???
Join celebrated authors Susan Spann (author of the Hiro Hattori mysteries) and Laura VanArendonk Baugh (author of the Kitsune Tales series) for a history-packed discussion of the fact and fiction of ninjutsu and ninja.
Japanese Fairy Tales
Time: ???
In the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, the Western world was fascinated by newly-available trade goods and cultural elements coming out of Japan, which had been closed off from the Western world for more than two centuries. One outgrowth of this trend was the repackaging of Japanese folk tales for American children. Join Alena as she shares translated stories from a 1904 volume of Japanese Fairy Tales.
Japanese Culture and History: The Bite-Sized Collection
Time: ???
As the oldest monarchy in the world, Japan’s had plenty of time for some amazing moments in history. Hear a few of the most important, most famous, or most fun -- from the Genpei War to the Meiji Revolution, from girl power to magical red cows, from archery contests to smallpox -- with illustrations, photos, ties to your favorite anime/manga, and plenty of geekery. These shorter videos range in running time from 4 to 45 minutes, so you can take your history in small bites or settle in for the whole marathon!
Individual videos cover:
Senjafuda
The Shitennou
The Akabeko
The Ainu
The 47 Ronin
Japanese Number Puns
Japanese Archery Challenge
Smallpox and the Great Buddha
Nakano Takeko
The Byakkotai

@katherineophe THANKS FOR TAGGING ME! I’m sorry for responding so late, I saw this like two days ago and finally got time to sit and answer! 8)
So, first of all, I’mma tag @paws-bells @almightybuttcheeks @shihoh @scarletxaya @hcibara @yato-siblings
OK SO.
RULES: Choose any three fandoms (in random order) and answer the questions. Then tag some friends.
I choose:
1) Naruto
2) Detective Conan
3) Gintama
The first character you loved:
1) Kakashi.
2) Conan, because he’s a charming lilshit.
3) Kagura? Gin? IDK???
The character you never expected to love so much:
1) Itachi, considering who he was at first. ;;
2) KOGOROU AND SONOKO.
3) Takasugi, the amount of love I have developed for him in just one arc is a plot twist by itself. <3
The character you relate to most:
1) Shikamaru (’s laziness and how he finds everything troublesome) and Sakura (with all her insecurities and childish thinking that grew into determination to wanting to be someone useful).
2) I find Haibara’s sass and sarcasm hella relatable, does that count?
3) EVERYONE AND NO ONE? They all have relatable quirks yet are idiots to a level I have yet to reach? :)
The character you’d slap:
1) Sasuke, mid-shippuuden. :) also Danzo, always Danzo.
2) Ran when she bases all her life decisions on Shinichi. (I don’t dislike Ran, her karate is life, but just...mmm.)
3) I...no one? Tokugawa Sadasada and maybe Nobunobu before but...? I don’t know, one is dead and the other sort-of redeemed himself?
Three favorite characters (these are in order of preference):
1) Itachi, Sakura, Shikamaru.
2) Haibara, Heiji, Amuro.
3) Toushi, Zura, Kagura.
A character you liked at first but not so much anymore:
1) Apparently, I liked Hinata when I was a kid? (what was I thinking?)
2) Jodie. She was so badass, what happened, Gosho!! ;;
3) None? 8) with Gintama, it’s only more, never less!
A character you did not like at first, but they’ve grown on you:
1) Ino! God, did she grow on me!
2) Vermouth, maybe. Also Sonoko.
3) Sa-chan! <3
3 OTPs:
(not sure if 3 per fandom or just 3 in general, so I went with the former)
1) SasuSaku, NejiTen, ItaSaku.
2) CoAi, Subaru x Haibara, Amuro x Sera. (who cares about canon? NOT ME.)
3) OkiKagu, HijiGin, GinTsu.

He had been on the most grisly assignment of his ten years in ANBU, sweeping the Uchiha district looking for survivors. Kakashi heard that one boy had been left alive, and he hoped to find others, but he didn’t.
What he did find was a passageway that led beneath the Uchiha’s meeting hall. Itachi was still unaccounted for after his attack on his own clan, so Kakashi proceeded to follow the tunnel down in case it led to his hiding place.
He didn’t find Itachi there, but a stone tablet had caught and held Kakashi’s attention. He removed his ceramic mask and was on the verge of opening his left eye, curious as to whether or not his borrowed Sharingan could perceive more in the tablet than met his right eye when he heard an ominous scratching sound.
Under his gaze, a seal glowed, making itself known and seemingly etching itself deeper into the rock wall behind the tablet. Without thinking, Kakashi reached up to touch it and in one furious, nauseating spin, found himself standing in a low valley in the middle of the day, in the middle of winter, with a dead man standing before him.

Rinne-Whoops: Who Died and Brought You Back Out?
Don’t  even ask--Post continued from here
@minaa-munch
@senjutsunade
“Inōichi-senpai?” Izumo murmured as all four shinobi continued to stare at the Kage in contemplation, afore Kakashi nodded (in answer to both Izumo and his yellow-haired, former Sensei) the arm, rubbing at the nape of his neck venturing further upward to tug his forehead protector back into place over his left eyelid. “Hai, he will be the most qualified to help with, Yondaime-sama’s muddled memories.” The Iryō-nin whom had her palms clasped in front of her chest agreed with him in a low hum, dark hues shifting from the slumped Fire Shadow towards the Jōnin. Kotetsu seemed less convinced however, sharing a brief glance with his partner, before his digits came to rest on the juts of his hips. “Demo…would it be wise…to let someone from the Intelligence and Interrogation unit know…won’t they…catechize him, Kakashi-senpai? I get that we can’t exactly keep this type of thing a secret, but maybe just until Tsunade-sama wakes up? I mean…He already seems to be in pain…” The Chūnin trailed off lamely, his own orbs flittering over the shambolic cavern, the edge of his sandal toeing at a scroll fragment.
“…That is exactly why we need to enlist Inōichi-san’s help.”  Kotetsu blinked, looking up to find the Hatake had yet to sever his gaze with the cerulean-eyed Shinobi. “It is as you said, we can’t keep this type of thing secret for long, but we can govern who gets to know of this /first/. Inōichi-san is a loyal shinobi, an avid believer in the Third’s Will of Fire…but he was also a good friend of the Yondaime. I don’t believe catechizing an old comrade would be something Inōichi would do right off the bat.” It was then that the Hatake shifted, a begloved palm landing heavily on the Chūnin’s shoulder. “…If he sorts through Lord Fourth’s memories and ends up putting them back into the right order, I doubt an official interrogation will be necessary. You both did good bringing me here, demo, you can leave now…” His single, visible hue curved in what he hoped to be a show of ‘encouragement’, before he let the other go, deft fingers coiling into the familiar signs of the Tiger Seal. “M-Matte, Kakashi-senpai! What do you mean? You can’t expect us to just do nothing.” Kakashi in turn cocked his head to the side as if ruminating over the other man’s words, mouth twitching underneath the fabric of his mask, though not enough to be considered as a smile.
“Iie…I never suggested that…Domo, a lot of time has passed. The two of you should return to Shizune, though stop by the Ikayaki tent on your way; maybe consider a side-order of fried rice, brown. When Shizune asks for Tsunade-sama’s files just confirm that you met me half-way and that I offered to get it in your place, as I was already on my way to the outer-rim. My chakra imprint is all over this cavern, but yours aren’t. Plus I’d be willing to wager my signed copies of Jiraiya-sama’s special anniversary addition of Icha Icha Paradise that neither Shizune nor Sakura have left Tsunade-sama’s side to eat something decent since she’s collapsed. Nothing quells ire or an array of unwelcomed questions quite like a nice, warm meal…ne?”
Kakashi’s leaden gaze flittered towards the Kunōichi. “As for Hakui-san…It’s best that you return to the medical tent before you’re missed. With skills like yours and with construction accidents on the rise, I’m certain that your chakra will be needed to do a lot more good.” Kakashi then proceeded to mould his own chakra, the mauve energies, bubbling and pitching, before divvying into half—an exact clone appearing at his side amidst a puff of smoke. “It’s a hassle…but my Raitōn Clone will look for the Godaime’s papers while I’ll make sure Minato-sensei gets to the Yamanaka Compound…luckily it’s not far from here…That’s the plan for now at least. I don’t need to stress that neither one of you were here. At all. Yes?”
The Chūnin chorused their accord, before slowly meandering their way toward the corridor, unable to find fault with the Jōnin’s nippy reasoning. Only Izumo hesitated for a beat longer, his visible hue skimming over the mess of wood-chips and paper. “Not gonna lie, Senpai, I feel bad about leaving you to deal with the dirty work, even just your clone…” Kakashi gave an evasive wave of his palm, sucking in a long, impassive breath. “..It’s fine…It’s fine…Though I could use your bandana…bandana yes…give it here, Izumo.” Izumo’s dark orb blinked, digits rising to fumble with the navy material, but found nothing but a mess of chocolaty strands as the Jōnin already nicked the accessory from off his head, shoving the man towards the corridor at the same time. “Arigato, Izumo-kun, your sacrifice was a very noble one, best not keep Shizune waiting any longer. Bye-bye.”
Turing on his heel Kakashi inclined his covered chin at his clone to get him to work, before his gaze settled on the form of the Kage once more. For the first time the two of them found themselves alone, Kakashi’s gaze assuaging at the soft echoes of ‘please’ and the sheer helplessness cleaving to the Kage’s form like a second shroud. Not wanting the man to suffer from the onslaught of his own thoughts and memories any longer, the Hatake moved to crouch in front of the rock lip. “I’m not ‘gonna put you under, Minato-sensei…but I am going get you some help….Just…” The Jōnin paused to peer at the pallid, pained features of the Yellow Flash, before he leaned forward to hide the distinguishing, yellow spikes with the Chūnin’s pilfered bandana, careful not to rub against the red, inflamed scrapes and nail indents visible along the sides of his temple. “….Trust me?” The Jōnin then lifted the Kage’s arm, wounding it about his neck, while his own limb curled about the man’s middle, heaving him upward and out of his sarcophagi.
Moving the former Leader was far from an easy task, the man practically a dead-weight, slanted into Kakashi’s side and still wrecked with uneven breaths and the occasional cough. But Kakashi expected as much as he maneuverer the both of them through the chamber towards the passageway the others disappeared through prior. The plus side was that they met no resistance along the snaking, narrow warren; nor did the Jōnin feel the flecks of any prying chakra signatures. Years of experience advised that in itself wasn’t enough of an indicator that they weren’t being watched and/or followed, so Kakashi remained alert, muscles starting to twinge with how tense he held himself—and as the dimness began to lift, the faint tinges of afternoon sunlight signalling the exit up ahead, Kakashi adjusted his hold on his former mentor, before urging forward once more, pace perpetually slow.
“The Exit is up ahead, it seems to be late afternoon still, so you might want to…shield your eyes.”
Kakashi didn’t check to see if Minato complied by fluttering his lids closed, choosing instead to alter his intent stare down the rough iron steps and into the crater where everyone was still bustling along like little, carpenter ants. Any minute now people would start to pack up their tools and wander towards their respective tents, the barracks, their homes; increasing the chances of being spotted by a weary individual or two (not to mention the receptive ANBU Platoons, as Kakashi has it on good authority that Ibiki upped the patrol roster in lieu of the Pain attack) As such Kakashi called on his chakra reserves (those violet swirls not tasked with keeping his clone within this plain of existence) to haul both of their forms from the Hokage Mountain in a concise body flicker to appear once more at the foot of the steps.
Sure, it might not be the best tactic when supporting a severely /disoriented/ resurrected, but the Hatake reasoned that cleaning chunky spew from his flak-jacket and standard-issue blues, would heavily outweigh the panic and outright bothersome questions he might have to consider answers for /if they were caught/ not to mention the datum of time, time which they did not have. The silver-haired shinobi could not put his finger on it, but there was a nagging feeling at the back of Kakashi’s skull that caused him to constantly shoot a narrowed hue over the swell of his shoulder. A feeling like he failed to take something important into account, that he /missed/ something, though re-examining his chosen actions thus far failed to provide further elucidations. It only urged the Jōnin forwards that much faster and placed a heavy hope on the shoulders of his Raitōn clone. Kakashi hoped that he would be thorough whereas Kakashi was heedless.
They made their way passed the off-turn which lead toward the Hattori Clan Ruins, the towering Hashirama and Ginkō trees passing by in blurs and blotches of green and brown, a tell-tale that they reached the boundary leading into the Nara Clan Forest. If Kakashi wasn’t certain that Shikakū was still in the presence of the old war-mongerer; he might have consider cutting through the deer forest towards its compound neighbour, but as the current Head was still indisposed, the Jōnin thought better of chancing his luck via trespassing. The two shinobi continued to travel along the borderline, Kakashi stopping only twice (once to avoid two Akimichi huddled around a cluster of brightly coloured mushrooms, the second to avoid the kids who were once Kurenai’s Genin team) afore they finally made it to the outskirts of the Yamanaka Clan Compound. The clan dwelling was the most centred of all of the Konohagakure Clans, a fact evident in the vast amounts of dirt and debris littering what used to be fields of wild Lavender and Tiger Lilies, the depository houses the Hatake knew to have contained many herbs and flowers of all shapes and usages, all but destroyed.
As Kami would have it, the main estate seemed to be mostly intact, save for a few missing roof-tiles and the windows on the west side of the house that were replaced by a see-through, green tarp. Kakashi ambled forward, praying that the elder Jōnin was home and in a particularly benevolent mood, while his digits flexed against his mentor’s side. Despite being an active shinobi since the tender age of five (many of said years spent within the sombre underbelly of the ANBU) Kakashi only ever worked with the Head of the Yamanaka clan once or twice where a mind-probe proved an ineffective interrogation method thanks to tricky conscious seals and the Sharingan was required as an alternative. As such Kakashi wasn’t as versed in the Clan Head’s habits and methods as he was in the ways of the man’s two teammates. Yet the Yondaime’s laboured breaths urged him to swallow any uncertainties (those he never dared voice to the three Chūnin) as soon as it dared to flicker into existence.
‘Maa, a shinobi should never second guess his actions, huh.’
The Hatake found himself uttering with some amount of discontentment, while calloused fingers rose to rap twice against the door. It took a moment, but soon Kakashi’s ears picked up the steady thuds of feet and the door opened to reveal a tired Ino still smudged with the sweat and grime of a hard day’s work. Periwinkle orbs widened as they fixed upon Kakashi’s hunched form, before they shifted briskly towards the other shinobi slumped against the Jōnin's side, his chin dipped toward his chest and obscuring any features from the girl’s keen inspection.
“Aa…Ino…Is your Tou-san home? I would really like to speak to him, it’s a bit of an emergency, you see…”
