'Yes, that old oak with which I saw eye to eye was here in this forest,' thought Prince Andrei. 'But whereabouts?' he wondered again, looking at the left side of the road and, without realizing, without recognizing it, admiring the very oak he sought. The old oak, quite transfigured, spread out a canopy of dark, sappy green, and seemed to swoon and sway in the rays of the evening sun. There was nothing to be seen now of knotted fingers and scars, of old doubts and sorrows. Through the rough, century-old bark, even where there were no twigs, leaves had sprouted, so juicy, so young that it was hard to believe that aged veteran had borne them.
'Yes, it is the same oak,' thought Prince Andrei, and all at once he was seized by an irrational, spring-like feeling of joy and renewal. All the best moments of his life of a sudden rose to his memory. Austerlitz, with that lofty sky, the reproachful look on his dead wife's face, Pierre at the ferry, that girl thrilled by the beauty of the night, and that night itself and the moon and ... everything suddenly crowded back into his mind.
'No, life is not over at thirty-one,' Prince Andrei decided all at once, finally and irrevocably. 'It is not enough for me to know what I have in me- everyone else must know it too: Pierre, and that young girl who wanted to fly away into the sky; all of them must learn to know me, in order that my life may not be lived for myself alone.
From War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
#there are so many gorgeous passages in W&P that i could pick#why not this one in which Andrei reflects on several of them?#I've already talked about the Natasha and the moon passage on this blog. truly one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever read in any book#but part of what's so interesting about that scene is that we actually get it from Andrei's perspective. he's listening below the window#and overhearing Natasha that night is really what makes him love her#it's what made /me/ love her#and he carries that experience with him alongside his own experience looking up at the sky on the battlefield at Austerlitz#Napoleon himself sees Andrei and commends his courage but Andrei barely notices because the sky is so so beautiful#the lofty heavens which he never really considered before#but Natasha did#and so it's those moments his friendship with Pierre this old oak that renew his lust for life#life is not over at thirty. once i heard a girl exclaim at the loveliness of the moon and wish to fly away.#once i lay on a battlefield and all i could see was the beauty of the sky#and my friend Pierre believes in the future and he's searching it out#and look. this tree is still here#first time i read W&P i was honestly so relieved that so many people got happy endings the tragedy of Andrei's death didn't fully register#i mean the chapters concerning his death are beautiful and sad. the kinship between Natasha and Maria at his bedside#the peace he finds as he dies#but it really is a story in which he had decided to live fully only to die young. and that's become increasingly tragic to me as I've grown#happy birthday tolstoy#russia where are you flying to?#pontifications and creations

Happy birthday, William Lloyd Garrisom! (December 10, 1805)
A leading abolitionist and social reformer in the antebellum period, William Lloyd Garrison was born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He became active in the anti-slavery movement in the 1820s, rejecting the moderate parties of gradual abolition and colonization to become a leader of the movement's radical wing. He founded the abolitionist newspaper The Liberator, in which he published fiery, incisive writings denouncing slavery, and which quickly gained popularity in the Northern states. Garrison was also an early advocate for women's suffrage. He was denounced by moderates and conservatives, and was even burned in effigy by supporters of slavery. He died in 1879, but his work and writings influenced figures from Leo Tolstoy to Martin Luther King.
"Tell a man whose house is on fire to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen; – but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest – I will not equivocate – I will not excuse – I will not retreat a single inch – and I will be heard. The apathy of the people is enough to make every statue leap from its pedestal and to hasten the resurrection of the dead."

could you do eddie x nerdy!reader with fluff #10 for your birthday drabble-a-thon?
(also happy birthday !!)
10. "You're adorable when you ramble." Thank youuuuu.... awww nerdy!reader is adorable... This really tested my knowledge of punnett squares. 🎂 other bday drabbles 🎂 masterlist / send me a message
"So if the mother has blue eyes and the father has brown eyes, what colour eyes would the child have?"
"Uh," Eddie sucked on the end of his pencil, bouncing his knee beneath the table. "Blue?"
"Have you been listening to anything I've been saying?"
"I've been listening, I'm just not really hearing what you're saying."
"Okay," you sighed, flipping to a new page in your note book and drawing up a table. "So blue eyes are a recessive gene, right? So we'll write that as a lower case b." You wrote a lower case b above each of the top two squares. "That makes brown eyes..." you drifted off, waiting for him to finish your sentence for you.
He scrunched his nose in concentration. "Dominant?"
"Yes!" You cheered, writing a capital B on the left side of the top square. "Let's just say the father also carries the blue eye gene." You wrote a lowercase b on the left side of the bottom square. "So let's put them together. What do we write in the first square?"
"Brown and blue?" Eddie asked.
"Yep, and what about the next square?"
"The same, right? And then the bottom squares are all blue so it's a fifty-fifty chance the kid has blue or brown eyes!"
"Yes, Eddie! You got it," you held out your hand for a hi-five which he eagerly returned.
"Thank you. For helping me. I know I'm a shitty student-"
"You can be a good student when you want to be."
"You're just a really good teacher." He leant back in his chair, clasping his hands behind his head. "Did you end up getting into the college you wanted?"
You sighed. College was a sore spot for you, and it was all due to the fact that your parents expectations were sky high. "I got into the college my parents wanted." That had been their dream for you since day one; get your undergraduate degree in biology from MIT and then med school at Duke. They wanted a doctor more than they wanted a daughter.
"You're not excited?" Eddie thought anyone who got into college would be excited, but your flat expression told a different story. "What do you want?"
No one had asked you that. It was never about what you wanted, it was just expected that you would do what your parents told you to do. You didn't even have to think about it before the words came out of your mouth. "I want to study literature."
"Books?" Eddie raised his eyebrows, nodding.
"Not just books. Authors. I want to learn why they wrote what they wrote. And not just the American literature like Steinbeck or Twain that we do in school, but Tolstoy and Dumas. And feminist perspectives like Shelley and Woolf too-" you stopped because he was staring at you. "What?"
"Nothing," he grinned. "It's just you're adorable when you ramble."
Your cheeks suddenly felt hot and the tips of your ears burned. He'd said you were adorable, and he'd said it so casually. You chanced a glance up at him, he was still staring at you, his bottom lip was between his teeth.
You couldn't think of a response, so you looked down quickly and went back to the punnet squares. "That was a monohybrid cross, but if we want to look at a dihybrid cross-"
"Hang on a sec," Eddie put his hand on your notebook to get your attention. "I never told you this, but I actually asked Mr. Loch if you could tutor me. I've uh, kind of had this teensy crush on you for a while."
"You have a crush on me?" Your eyes widened. You were used to being the quiet girl at the front of the class that no one paid attention to. People weren't suppose to have crushes on you... right?
"Well yeah. And it's not teensy, it's more of this big distracting crush thats making it impossible to focus on anything."
"Oh," you felt the blush creep back and your stomach had started doing flips. You'd never thought of Eddie that way, but then again you'd never really spoken to Eddie before you'd started tutoring him last month. He was nice, and handsome, and the way he furrowed his brows when he was concentrating was insanely cute. Okay, maybe you had thought about Eddie that way...
"I know after the test next week you won't need to tutor me anymore, but maybe we could still hang out?"
You nodded a little quicker than you had anticipated. "I mean, we've had a pretty good study session tonight, maybe we could cut it short and get dinner?"
Eddie grinned. "As in a date?"
You nodded, tucking your hair behind your ear. "Yeah, as a date."
"Okay, I just have one quick biology question for you before we go," Eddie covered your hand with his, his thumb brushing over your wrist. "What colour eyes would our kids have?"

I first saw Zawe with Tom Hiddleston at the Dickens and Tolstoy debate in 2018 then again at Pinter’s birthday event months before Betrayal was released on the West End. Technically they met and worked together there to deliver a great debate in who was the better Victorian novelist.
They just had a chemistry together. So much in common, and I'm so happy for them ❤️
They actually met a long time ago in 2010! They also said they’ve bumped into each other at events over the years ❤️

I don’t know if anyone asked you yet but I’ve seen others ask everyone else. Soooo… your top Hackearney fic reqs… pls? 🥺
I HAVE been asked this and I've sworn up and down to do this, but I've just been lazy as f*ck. HOWEVER today is the day!
So, strap in, y'all here are my hackearney fics recs!
Keep in mind, the authors here all have MULTIPLE works in this fandom/ship that are good, I'm just picking the ones I've specifically bookmarked and read.
There are also some I've heard are good and just haven't read yet (looking at you, Garden of Moonlit Grief) and there are others that I'm sure are fantastic, but are not my cup of tea (ie, noncons, fics that might be TOO dark, etc)
In other words, if I don't mention you and we talk I don't mean to hurt your feelings I love all of the Hackearney hivemind omggggg...
(these are also listed in no type of order)
Every Single Edge - E - Skymasters - A week after the events of The Quarry, Laura can't get a certain sheriff out of her mind. She pays him a visit.
So, this was the first fic I ever read with them and it was in character and super hot. It's also one of those fics I envy, because I wish I could convey things this insightfully in a one shot fic as opposed to the Tolstoy novel-length fics I write!
Late Bloomer - M - FanFicReader01 - Travis’ heart felt heavy. Sometimes, it felt like he was the only sane Hackett left and that could be seen as a stretch.
Another one of the first fics I read fics, I found this idea incredibly romantic and creative, but also very sad. It's not a happy ending kind of fic, but it hits well and I enjoyed it a great deal.
I Will Spin You Rose Evenings and Gold Mornings - E - TheWeirdDane - Laura Kearney is at the end of her rope when it comes to managing her finances for vet school. Contemplating various ways to earn some extra cash, she eventually turns to sex work, and goes on to meet with an older guy who will pay for her time and intimacy.
There's something about Sugar!Daddy fics. Rhink got me into it and this fandom is pushing me into it further. I really enjoy AUs - especially ones where Travis is softer but still a firm disciplinary - noice.
Werewolf Bites and Hot Summer Nights - E - winterlilyflowers - An AU in which Laura and Max can’t find Hackett Quarry and end up at the Harbinger Motel, before becoming camp counsellors for the summer. Max is moody and secretive and Laura keeps bumping into the grumpiest sheriff with the cutest puppy dog eyes, and when he gives her his number ‘just in case’ a girl can’t help but drunk dial him one night. Cue overprotective and jealous Travis. And shouldn’t the officer get a birthday kiss? An unlikely start for a badass werewolf fighting duo, but a hot one.
Listen, if you're part of the fandom and a shipper and haven't read this, I don't know how to help you. It's so damn good. I re-read one, ah, scene in particular...it involves Travis's cruiser and being outside and...yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaah. 👀
I LEGIT re-read that scene last night! but the entire fic is good. Again, I'm a big AU fan and I like the idea of how the game might have gone with little changes, so, this one fits that bill and then some. The Travis/Laura snark is also there as well, so - love it,
Caged - E - Gaqalesqua - Laura Kearney did not expect to spend her summer locked up by a creepy cop. Travis Hackett forgot that human beings have needs even when they're in prison.
This is one of those fics that has no right to be as hot as it is. I felt like the author really nailed Laura's voice too - they also get Travis, but since a lot of it is from Laura's POV, it's just really spectacular to me how well they got inside her noggin.
Also have to admire a fic that starts out just hot and then gets deep and makes you emotional.
Family - M - Tianasina - Laura sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the number on her phone’s screen. Her hand shook as she held her phone. She glanced briefly at the object clutched in her other hand. She sucked in a panicked breath and looked back at the phone, pushing her other hand out of her vision. Her thumb hovered over the green dial icon before shakily pressing down upon it. Dialing Travis…Laura needs help, Travis is willing to help.
I was legit surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Maybe I shouldn't have been, considering how domestic it gets, but honestly - not usually a fan of baby fics. But Travis with a baby is heart melting and I like how organically his relationship with Laura grows. A fun sweet read.
No Hard Feelings - E - Professional_Creeper - Travis had been having trouble staying hard while masturbating, but it was just stress from dealing with the curse. It was just because his hand wasn't exciting. With a woman as beautiful and alive as Laura writhing beneath him, he would be fine...
Listen, someone was GOING to have to write an ED fic for this ship and I'm glad this person did, because they nailed it and made it so genuine and heartfelt but also still sexy as fuck??? I couldn't pull this off - and I always admire those who can do what I cannot. And boy did they do it with gusto - this is like, give them a prize! fic. I would if I could!
Love Me Under The Neon Lights (If Only For The Night) - E - @spookyscaryscully - Travis could think of a thousand different places he wanted to be on his night off. A strip club was not one of them. AKA: The Hackearney Stripper AU.
Someone who has a LOT of irons in a LOT of AU fires and they're all burn hot, but I'm choosing this one because I just really love the whole solid idea of it. And, again, sucker for a soft!Travis!
There's just a lot of great work here - this idea could have just been sold as a silly thing but instead there's some distinctive depth. Love it.
Warmth - M-False_Mortal - A litter of kittens and their mother were dumped in front of the police station. Travis takes them in because it’s snowing and he maybe has a heart. Laura is a veterinarian assistant at the local shelter, where she sometimes works the front desk.
Travis, Laura, Cats - all things I like and in one place. SOLD. It's also just heartwarming and cute, but still with delectable sexytimes. Also, again, an AU and I adore AUs!!
Dear Friend - M - lovemeforallmyfaults - A new substitute professor settles in at her new job, with the help of a friend she meets in the college forums. A tenured professor tries to open up to someone other than his close relations. (aka - the You’ve Got Mail Set In College AU absolutely no one asked for)
Um - I think EVERY fandom should have a You've Got Mail AU?!? And luckily this writer rose to the challenge! It's fun to see Travis and Laura spar in a completely different environment but still feel like them. Not to mention, I again adore the whole concept of letters and not knowing it was you and so, yeah - love this!
Pass Me The Shotgun (And I'll Hand You My Heart) - E - @norrington-hell - Sometimes the best way to deal with your trauma is to see a therapist. And sometimes it's to find the surly bastard responsible and rock his goddamn world. Laura knows which option she prefers.
I already did a whole post about this, but - shut up. THIS FIC. I both love it and hate it. THIS IS NOT A BAD THING. I love it, because it's probably one of the best written things I've ever read. I hate it. because when I read new chapters or re-read it, I feel this overwhelming seething jealousy towards Norrie and her talent, when I know I should be a good girl!
I - for the life of me - have a hard time writing conflict and super!mean Travis and bratty!Laura and Norrie just strolls up to the bar and is shooting bullseye's left and right and blind folded for it like it's no big thang.
Her world is so rough and real and not at all sugar coated. It's not easy, so, when things go well for these two, it feels so EARNED. UGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! Take me out of this club, I'm DYIIIIINNNNG.
...in conclusion, I will always recommend this fic forever and always and it's probably a staple of how you should approach writing them.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo yeah - here you are anon and anyone interested! If you follow me and one of these fics are yours and I didn't know your tumblr name because I'm smart-like-that (tm) please let me know so I can tag you properly!

A birthday list for August
25 years ago yesterday, my maternal grandmother died on a beautiful day on a farm hidden in the mountains of Virginia. A loss that was incredibly sad, yet at 11 years old was hard to grasp the enormity of. Four years ago yesterday, we buried my paternal grandmother in a sleepy town in the Pine Belt of Mississippi. A loss that was incredibly painful and deeply impacted my life. My love for both of my grandmothers has always been deep and they both have made an indelible mark on my life. What you don’t fully grasp at 11, at 32 you grasp more than you would like to grasp. And my paternal grandmother’s loss at 32 also brought about grief about having lost my maternal grandmother at 11 and realizing on a deeper level what I had missed. I do not have the words to accurately portray the importance of all four of my grandparents in my life. I am who I am because I have been deeply loved by wonderful people who have taught me so well. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
Today, is my birthday and I have made a list of some of my favorite things. As always, I hope that you enjoy this list and find something that you like. Have a wonderful weekend, and stay cool!
Favorite book(s) –
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy | Goodreads
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas | Goodreads
Favorite quotes (from said books) –
“You have a consistent character yourself and you wish all the facts of life to be consistent, but they never are. For instance, you despise public service because you want work always to correspond to its aims, and that never happens. You also want the activity of each separate man to have an aim, and love and family life always to coincide – and that doesn’t happen either. All the variety, charm and beauty of life are made up of light and shade.”  Tolstoy
“Tell the angel who will watch over your future destiny, Morrel, to pray sometimes for a man who, like Satan, thought himself, for an instant, equal to God; but who now acknowledges, with Christian humility, that God alone possesses supreme power and wisdom. Perhaps those prayers may soften the remorse he feels in his heart. As for you, Morrel, this is the secret of my conduct towards you. There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of life. Live, then, and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget, that until the day when God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words, - ‘Wait and hope.’” Dumas
Favorite songs (top 3) –
Luciano Pavarotti sings "Nessun dorma" from Turandot (The Three Tenors in Concert 1994) - YouTube
Avicii - Wake Me Up (Official Lyric Video) - YouTube
Yo-Yo Ma - Bach: Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Prélude (Official Video) - YouTube
Favorite place to travel –
Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau - Unique Mackinac Island, MI Vacation
Favorite movie –
REMEMBER THE TITANS Trailer (2000) Denzel Washington Movie - YouTube

Hello, Dani! I started reading LBAF (for the first time, I hope I will finish reading it right the moment you finish writing the fourth part. I'm in the very beginning so it's highly likely). And wow...
To be honest, not the biggest fan of OC in fics, this is why I didn't want to read it in the first place. But when I met these characters in TLND, I was... intrigued.
And I praise your writing skills right again bc when it comes to characterization, nobody holds a candle to you. And how you write emotions and feelings is always on point and accurate. I think that when you feel like this is not a character but a real person whose life inner life of mind was just recorded, this is when a writer did the great job. Recorded the ugliest turns of the thought process. You excelled in this in TLND. The only writers who made me feel the same things about their characters, besides you, were Tolstoy and Mariam Petrosyan. Although you're much funnier and cooler than Tolstoy.
So I'm interested in learning more about these troublemakers. Good writing the fourth part!
P. S.: Don't want to get ahead of myself or anything but in one of your asks you mentioned that you like reading painful and angsty malec and... Well, can I just share my fic? It's here. If you decide to read it, I should warn you that it's kind of very graphic. And better to read tw, for you not to be disturbed by the contents. If it appalls you, then it's absolutely fine. If it's not what you meant when answering that ask, I'm sorry.
Hope your health is good :)
P. S. S.: Happy (future or not, depending on when you answer this) birthday to the archer boy who loved one man so much he changed the world for him and makes me cry daily.
Oh this is so beautiful and kind. I was about to turn in for the night and then I read this and now I'm a puddle of emotions.
Thank you so much for giving LBAF a chance. I hope it won't disappoint you. Let me know how you like it 🥹
Being compared to Tolstoy is both a compliment and an insult (if you know what i mean lol). But thank you so much. I love characterization so much. It's why I write such long stories. It's important to me.
And thank you so much for the fic rec! I'm about to go read it right now. I'm usually fine with graphic content and gore :)
I'm doing well. I have a physically exhausting week ahead. So, i was able to relax this weekend and prepare for that. Wishing you a fantastic week.
PS - So so so excited to see my dash get flooded with alec lightwood content. We're gonna celebrate him hard tomorrow!

He sought his former accustomed fear of death and did not find it. “Where is it? What death?” There was no fear because there was no death.
In place of death there was light.
“So that’s what it is!” he suddenly exclaimed aloud. “What joy!”
To him all this happened in a single instant, and the meaning of that instant did not change. For those present his agony continued for another two hours. Something rattled in his throat, his emaciated body twitched, then the gasping and rattle became less and less frequent.
“It is finished!” said someone near him.
He heard these words and repeated them in his soul.
“Death is finished,” he said to himself. “It is no more!”
He drew in a breath, stopped in the midst of a sigh, stretched out, and died.
The conclusion to The Death of Ivan Illyich by Leo Tolstoy

Day 161: Friday June 10, 2022 - “Bucket List Boneyard #34”
One of the original 20 slots on my Bucket List when I put it together 13 years ago was “Fatherhood” and on the day that William came into the world I decided that I had yet to truly experience anything related to fatherhood and so would wait until he turned one to put the most monumental adventure into the boneyard.  And today, 365 days of fatherhood now under my belt I can reflect on the ups and downs of that journey - some parts were way easier than expected, and some were far harder than imagined, but we got here -  the consistent drumming of time landing us here as parents of a one year old who despite the odds shows up every day as a complete joy baby - a happy ham.  Not quite walking yet and babbling about things that we can only guess at, William is the complete center of our world, from wake up to bed time and through each night as he co-sleeps between us.   Taking this last month picture feels like a resetting of the clock and I can only imagine all that we’ll continue to learn together over the next spin.
After work today I helped with prep for his party tomorrow by getting all the month pictures printed along with several collages from each month even creating a collage of all 12 from newborn to now its fun to see them all together and how much he changed from that little guy of last summer.  Looking back I sure can be proud of having archived so much of that first year and capturing some great pictures of him that his family can cherish some day when hes grown.   Of everything, thats my best contribution!   When it was time for him to go to bed for the last time as an 11 month old, I went and laid with him.  As he drifted up to sleep he reached up and grabbed my finger, just like he did that first hour when we visited the NICU together, and he whispered softly “Dadda” and went to sleep.  What a great birthday gift.  I thought about this night a year ago, sitting forever thinking he might come at any time after the sun went down with his amazing mom working through labor only to drift off to sleep on a hospital kat instead, listening to beeps and soundtrack of a hospital room at St, Joseph’s instead.  Id have to wait one more day to become a Dad.  Birth-days Eve.  And it was a real joy now, a year later, to fall asleep next to him - perfectly healthy (aside from a cheerio allergy!) having survived his first year without flaw.  I haven’t always felt like I knew what I was doing - but we sure have done something right in earning this 34th Bucket List charm and I send this one to the boneyard with more pride than any of the others.
Song: Phosphorescent - C’est La Vie No 2.

Happy birthday, Dorothy Day! (November 8, 1897)
A major leader of the left-wing Catholic Worker movement, Dorothy Day grew up in a nominally religious family, and consumed herself in the world of books. She read Upton Sinclair and Jack London, Kropotkin and Tolstoy, coming to embrace a radical social politics. She worked for several socialist publications, such as The Masses and The Call, and agitated for social progress while associating with radical figures such as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. In 1926, Day converted to Catholicism, and in 1933 became a founder of the Catholic Worker movement, contributing frequently to its publications. A pacifist, Day stood consistently and resolutely against war. She also involved herself in the establishment of the Catholic Worker houses of hospitality, facilities which provide shelter, food, and resources to the destitute. She died in 1980 after a long life of activism, and the Church has explored the possibility of canonizing her since 1983, although some in the Catholic Worker movement object to this.
