Changing Lives One Shimmy At A Time
Tumblr media
The Sensational Summer Hafla/ Shimmy Mob Louisville, KY 2024 has concluded. We had a blast on Saturday May 11th here in the Kentuckiana Valley. On World Bellydance Day we gathered together not only to have a good time and catch up, but to help raise money for our local action center, The Center for Woman and Families.
Tumblr media
During the day, Shimmy Mob Louisville gathered on the waterfront and performed while raising money on the Big 4 Walking bridge platform. Truthfully, I was very very tried from all the prep work, checking in to the AirBnB, and communicating with all the performers bout the lineup and any changes we had to make. But everyone showed there support by performing the main choreography and participating in the secondary one which involved audience participation.
This years crew consisted of many people whom had never danced any style before and a few whom had never danced bellydance.
Tumblr media
At the hafla, we had many local performers and supports from around the region as well fellowshipped to the beat of the tunes. Grateful for MarleyVon and Samira for headlining along with myself.  We had a few people not make the evening event, but sent love and shimmies their way. This is one of many gatherings for this year. Be sure to stay tuned to the Devi Dance Studio® website for updates and upcoming events. https://www.DeviDanceStudio.com
Tumblr media
The VP of The Center's Marketing and Outside Outreach spent time in Jordan and Egypt. He said he was very impressed and happy to be apart of something like this as it reminded him of his time abroad.
This made me super grateful. I am glad to have  made all of the food except for the baklava and the roasted veggies. (The veggies and baklava was made by one of the Shimmy Mob participants) I had a feeling there would be people from or spent time or was of the culture at the event. I didn't want them to try the hummus and it not be authentic. lol I noticed most store bought hummus was made with canola or soybean oil and not olive oil.
Having something positive to do is important to the healing process. It can be one of the key elements in victims becoming survivors. Getting out of victim mode is not easy and looks differently for everyone. It is just as important to be gently with those going though recovery.
I recently heard something that was very profound and possibly something I have always known, but didn't have the best phrasing. "The opposite of trauma is play." Which when you think about it, is very true. But sometimes allowing yourself to play can be hard as processing the trauma and going through it can be difficult.
Tumblr media
One of the many things abusers do is limit free thinking, play, happy moments, negate the curious nature, limit interactions, and create conditions/environment where brainwashing/or changing/manipulating the narrative as a way to control them or a situation. Some people and places use these tactics to keep people low and instill physiological phrases so later on in life it makes it hard for them as a person to be their authentic self, explore, live, and play. Often times without proper help and support, victims will subconsciously seek out similar emotional limits, people, places, and things thinking they are doing better, but they are not.
There is no shame in getting help, going to counseling/therapy, and belonging to authentic helpful support groups.  It is important to do things that are different, experience different cultures, and learn new things so you can not only reprogram your own thoughts, but to allow the healing process to thrive in your life. Mental and physical health is just as important as having a safe place to live, income, and quality of life.
Tumblr media
One of the Goddess Life with Tahulla Setsena Principals is, "You are the only You you have!" Let that sink in. You are important, and have the right to existence just like anyone else. We are not meant to always be subservient, obedient, quite, or limited. Ask questions, have adventures, laugh, sing, dance, create, appreciate, write, think, study, love and live for yourself. It is honorable to do things for and with yourself. Remember you don't need permission from anyone to do the things that are healthy and happy for you in your life.
Focusing on yourself can be hard to start, but when you do stick with it. It's just like dance. Many people don't even try because they are afraid of not being good at it, it being a waste of time, or what other people think. These limits can hinder your own growth and thoughts because you stop yourself before you even get started. We as a society need to stop focusing on being the most perfect prodigy at something, but should strive for the healthy ability to be motivated in the process of doing things. This can help lower jealous/envious and doubtful emotions which often stop the best outcome in most areas of life.
Be inspired, but not envious. Allow good counsel, but not gaslighting. Forgiveness is for you and not anyone else. Be gentle with yourself. You are worthy of peace and happiness. Nice and kind are not the same thing. Also allow yourself to know the difference and how it feels to be held accountable, but not disrespected. Allow yourself to recognize those who are comfortable with hindering you, for they not your friends or family. There is no shame in leaving and saying no. You owe it to yourself to do better for you by you.
Not everyday will be perfect and there may be times where you don't have the energy to go forth and prosper. That is okay. It's not really healthy to give 110% at everything you do all the time. Rest, existing, and fulfillment will be different for everyone. Celebrating and being safe with these difference could be the vibe your heart needs.

Dad Hood
Jumping on the Dad Red Hood bandwagon. [insert jazz hands here]
I imagine Jason hands granola bars out to the homeless in his territory, and he generally provides food and fresh water for those who need it on his terf.
And then he passes Danny post reveal gone bad and just hands him a granola bar thinking nothing of it.
Danny would be so confused why this stranger in a red helmet gave him food.
Danny meets this stranger’s eyes in his confusion and both his and the older man’s eyes flash green.
Jason’s first thought would be that this kid was Lazarus touched. While Danny would think he just found a ghost or another hafla.
Either way the pits seam to be calm. Not just calm, happy. Practically excited and cooing at the kid. It’s confusing as hell and what’s worse is that when the kid look up at him with those wide green eyes a surge of protective instinct rises through him along with the strange urge to punch him. But not punch him in a ‘I want to fight’ way, more like a ‘hi my name is Jason and you’re coming home with me now’ way. Which is bizarre and new and strange and kind of freaking him out.
Danny on the other hand is having a field day trying to get his core under control. His instinct is to punch this dude in the gut and introduce himself, but his brain keeps saying stranger danger run for the hills.
Hood just… turns around and grapples to the nearest roof. Trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with the pits, and he turns around to see if the kids still on the sidewalk because his instincts scream at him not to leave the kid alone and he’s just… gone. And all the sudden he’s going into a rage for no apparent reason.
Three days later after the interaction Danny sees Hood on a rooftop and lets out an involuntary chirp at him. Hood whips around to pinpoint the sound but Danny goes invisible out of mortification.
Why the hell would he chirp? He didn’t even know he could do that!
He spends the next few weeks unintentionally trailing Red Hood and vise versa with a very confused and slightly irritated air about them both.
Danny’s core is confused because he just lost his family and his haunt and was thrust into this new one without warning, so it latches onto the first familiar thing which just so happens to be Jason Todd.
Jason is just trying to live a normal life as a crime lord, but the pits cling to his this kid. …Was this how Bruce felt?

While I'm at it, might as well take photos for the hafla. My friend running the show wants pics of everyone who's performing so she can advertise.
I feel very pretty in this one.

Five things that make me happy :)
My partner and children, first and foremost, who just delight me by existing.
The boat. This is The Drake's Return, which is where my son lives. Sometimes we go and help him move it, because it's hard work going through the locks on the canals.
It was a bit of a fixer-upper! Last year we sanded it down to bare metal and painted it ourselves. This year we had to take it to a vintage diesel engineer to fix the engine idle and teach us how to change the oil. Which brings me on to
3. Sign Painting/Rose and Castles painting
Tumblr media
Just finished painting and lettering a gangplank for the boat. (It's a scaffolding plank with a paint job.) And you can see some of my Roses and Castles work on the boat's back doors. 'Roses and Castles' is a traditional British folk art based around the canal boats. I'm teaching a class on how to do it to a bunch of local folks next week.
4. Jewellery Making
I wanted to buy a necklace inspired by the stone age beads I saw while watching The Prehistory Guys on Youtube, but I could not find any. So I got myself a course in bead stringing instead and made my own.
Tumblr media
(This one inspired by the Varna culture in Bulgaria c. 4500 BC, which was heavy on red beads and gold.)
5. Dancing!
I used to absolutely adore morris dancing, but last year the combination of fibromyalgia and arthritis in the knees meant that I acknowledged that I had to give it up. I'm still involved in that world as a musician-which is still pretty cool- but it did rather depress me until I took up Belly Dancing instead. Now I'm belly dancing twice a week and due to perform at my first hafla at the end of May.

The Story of Sandwich Guy
For those of you who do not know, I am the mistress of Gold Key in the Barony of Stonemarche in the SCA. For those of you who really don't know, I go to medieval reenacting events, bringing a large assortment of pre-seventeenth-century clothing and loan it out to people so that everyone who comes to the event can be wearing a reasonable attempt at garb, whether they own any or not. It's fun, I get to make a lot of people happy as they rediscover the simple joy of dressing up like knights and princesses (note, they aren't knights and princesses, those are actual ranks in the SCA which one hardly gets at their first event) and I also get to take direct action when people show up without garb, which always has annoyed me.
Now, the largest event in the Barony is Birka. It takes place over a weekend and a couple hundred people attend. A surprising amount of those people are people who haven't even heard of the SCA but saw that there was an event going on in the Expo center and thought twenty bucks for a weekend was a good deal. Often a family or a group of friends all come in together and I'll be helping five people at the same time. Sometimes more than one family at once. So I tend to be very busy the entire time, helping people find outfits and keeping the area tidy. Most of the tidying comes in the form of hanging up the clothes people changed out of so they don't have to carry it, I know how many pieces haven't been returned yet, and they are guaranteed to come back with the loaner garb.
I mention this so that you have some idea of my state of mind when, in the middle of the day, during one of these rushes, a man comes in and asks for help. He had brought his own garb, as had his wife, but unfortunately his wife spilled something on the chemise and had to run up to the hotel room and wash it out. He assured me the chemise was fine, just soaking wet and she was waiting in the hotel room for him to come up with a new one so she could get dressed again. This is fine, this is what Gold Key is there for. I have signs hanging on the wall that explain Gold Key is free to anyone who lost, damaged, or otherwise does not have garb.
The trouble is, he has nothing to trade for the chemise. The wet chemise is hanging in the hotel room being cleaned. She didn't bring mundanes to the event, and he certainly didn't bring them down with him. In the past people have left their hotel keys or driver's licenses, but he had to leave the hotel after this. I asked if he had anything on him he could leave as collateral.
He holds up half a sub, rolled in paper and plastic.
"I really want this sandwich. It's precious to me. I'll come back for it by the end of the day." he promises.
I have three other people I need to help at this point, I'm stressed, and I don't know what to do. For some reason, what I did do was accept the sandwich, give him the chemise, and put the sandwich on the bottom of the coat rack next to a purse that had been left for the same reason. I remind him that the room locks up at ten and he'll need to bring back the chemise by the end of the day, retrieving his sandwich.
The day goes on, I'm kept busy, and I don't think about sandwich guy until about nine-forty-five, when I look over to the rack of checked garments, and there is just a choli that had that morning been worn by one of the skinniest four-year-olds I've ever seen in my life, despite the fact it was made to fit her mother. The mother had wanted to dress her child up as a bellydancer and take her to the hafla but the top was proving pretty much impossible for the kid to wear, and she ended up leaving it in exchange for a tie-front gown I have only ever seen fit an infant before. This kid was tiny. I wonder about both someone taking a toddler to a dance party that ends at ten P. M. and someone who leaves a sandwich in a coat check, not to mention how early I needed to get up the next morning. The hafla ends, the child returns the gown, and the other people in the room promise me that they will lock it when they leave, and if the sandwich guy came back, they would return his sandwich.
The next morning I arrive to take down Gold Key.
The sandwich is still there.
The sandwich has been sitting, unrefrigerated, on a coat rack, in a conference room, in a hotel, for what was closing in on twenty-four hours.
This distresses me, but I have three racks of clothing to sort into used and clean; two clothing racks to disassemble, twelve bins to fill with clothing, load into my sister's car, drive to a storage locker, lock up for the year, and two trash-bag sized bags of laundry to take home. I do not have time to eat lunch, much less worry about someone else's.
Finally, the man returns with the chemise. I pick up the sandwich. I extend it towards him.
"Here's your sandwich." I say.
"I do not want it."
"Take this sandwich away." I insist, more than a little stressed at this point. He took the sandwich. I assume he threw it away, but I do not care. All I care about is that the sandwich was no longer my problem.
I will no longer be accepting perishable items as collateral for Gold Key.

Hi, I hope this ain’t rude, but I am genuinely curious. What do you mean when you say hafla? I know the word in Arabic and it means “party,” so I’m wondering what meaning it has in context to belly dancing. :o
Yes to 'party.' But specifically in the context of belly dancers it's a gathering of performers. Anyone can attend, they're typically open to the public, sometimes we have a potluck. Anyone who wants to perform can perform. It's a low pressure stage where we can show off to each other. We also use this as an opportunity to try new or odd things that might be hard to find an audience that might appreciate it.
In contrast to like a performance at a gig, where you're performing for strangers and theres the pressure to perform well so you can get paid or make tips- it's basically dancing in front of friends.
I'm not sure the history of the term in this context, but it sort of feels like the kind of borrowed vocabulary that someone brought over to the US in the early days of that cultural exchange and now its stuck.
