You know what's really wild about Deb's and Steve’s heart-to-heart in 5x08? It's not that Deb tells Steve he should put his heart at risk, asking for Catherine, and Steve almost completely dismissing the talk because he probably didn't even discuss with Cath the chance she should come back to him because he loved her and needed her etc. He didn’t ask her of it because it was him letting her free.
No, the really wild thing, is that Steve shamelessly plays this charade about risking your heart with his aunt, while....he never did?? They went on for a decade, pushing and pulling, leaving and coming back, having other flings and relationships in between, Steve almost being horrified at Freddie's suggestion to go steady with her, sticking to her because his C.O.....sorry, uncle Joe, Had Told Him So, both starkly refusing to call each other boyfriend and girlfriend, denying it in front of family (Cath and her mother), friends (Steve and Danny), and strangers (Cath bashing on the poor kid innocently asking about them), refusing to give a name to their relationship except A Thing, Steve having more intimacy, complicity, mutual knowledge and understanding with Danny, and Cath with Billie, than with each other, and only saying a context-compulsory ILoveYou the moment they split paths for good...
....AND YOU FUCKING CALL THIS SHIT "risking your heart"???
Had you done it, you would've married the girl and then she would've left like your mommy, with a lie, to pursue her career and personal agenda and self-satisfaction (completely understandable but please at least be honest, girl!), and you would've rightfully-so claimed that you had taken a leap of faith with her, despite your family trauma and your reservations, and it went wrong.
This? This is her being unsatisfied of being the woman of the hero and wanting more than a white picket fence and two kids, and you being simply stalling and borrowing time while showing you were making an effort.
That wasn't even a risk. It was the epitome of love hospice and emotional chicken soup.

Watching 5x08 of Mcagyver. I LOVE that jerry didn’t just leave five o and decide to not help anyone. That would have seemed to ooc for him. The fact that he got shot, left law enforcement and took it upon himself to use the dark web to contact Codex. It just- it reminds me why Mr Jerry Ortega was one of my favorite characters from H50.

Hey there! I was wondering if you could recommend any good crying scenes? BTW I happen to think that you're totally awesome 😌❤
Oh boy do!! So many!
Okay, my all time favorite crying scene is when Daniel Jackson breaks down in Stargate SG-1 2x05 “Need”. So fucking good. The way his face just falls and Jack hugs him close while rocking him back and forth. I love it.
Mike Warren in Graceland 3x07 when he breaks down with Charlie after the intervention is my second favorite (big surprise right? lol)
Other favorites include:
David Tennant in Single Father. The breakdown in the bathroom scene
Roger all throughout Outlander 5x08. But specifically when he starts crying while listening to Brianna sing Clementine to Jemmy
Kara Danvers after the red kryptonite is out of her system in Supergirl 1x17
Detective Llewellyn Watts in Murdoch Mysteries 12x07
TC breaking down in the The Night Shift 1x08
David Tenant crying in the movie Einstein and Eddington
Dwight Enys breaking down in tears after his baby girl dies in Poldark 4x04
Klaus when he returns from Vietnam in The Umbrella Academy 1x05
Thomas Barrow crying all alone at the end of Downton Abbey 6x06
Danny Williams in h50 10x14 once Kate Seigel’s character dies.
Nate crying when his grandfather dies in Legends of Tomorrow 2x14
Judd Ryder in 911 Lone Star 1x01
Merlin in 1x13 when Arthur is dying from his injury and he just breaks down.
Thomas Barrow crying after hearing that Sybil passed away in Downton Abbey 3x05
When Mrs. Hughes finds Thomas crying alone, outside in the rain in Downton Abbey 3x06
Mark Watney crying before the moment he finally leaves Mars in the Martian
Zuko when he’s reunited with Uncle Iroh in the ATLA finale (3x19)
I know I’m missing some but I can’t think of them.

some choice caps with real captions from The McDanno Wedding Date™
considering someone had to pick and match the camera shots with the audio/voice over, a lot of interesting editing choices pop up 😏
actual lyrics that play over the scene in the beginning 'i will love you longer than forever'
Tumblr media
witness the marriage? i sure am. THEE marriage.
the way camera keeps cutting away to them when love is mentioned
Tumblr media
whose love? what are you trying to say to us with this editing? 🤔 the way episodic tv works is we have the main characters and the episodic characters and usually the storylines episodic character get are meant to parallel what is going on in life of the mains or teach them a lesson or help them come to a decision.
this episode already has drawn parallels between aunt Deb and Steve, and her relationship to Bob with Steve's 'not-marriage' to Danny. and then they keep cutting away to them during the marriage ceremony with some of the wedding vows written as if about Steve and Danny's relationship ('I can't even remember my life before you came along and changed everything.')
again, camera firmly on them at 'my one in a million and all I want is...' the way that sentence ends is, I am not kidding ↓
Tumblr media
'...to be your husband'. 'you are my one in a million and all i want is to be your husband'.
'you are my one in a million and all I want is to be your husband.'
that is the message they are sending while intercutting the newlyweds with Steve and Danny, only to end everything on a shot of very emotional Steve, close to tearing up, as if highlighting that we are seeing it from his POV.
if you think they are some pirated automatic captions that mean nothing, well
Tumblr media
here's the kicker, 100% official approved.
the story of Aunt Deb is hopeful despite circumstances, that happiness can be found when you least expect it, and everyone has their own, unique
Tumblr media
paradise. Hawai'i is commonly referred to as a 'tropical paradise', Danny famously called it 'pineapple-infested hellhole', it only gained the positive meaning for Steve and Danny after they found each other.
Steve and Danny really went to a wedding together and were constantly edited to parallel the newlyweds-to-be. Anyone may argue that I'm just reading into things but it's a fact that nothing on TV is accidental. Someone made all those choices that could be interpreted this way and I find that very interesting indeed. 😏

that time Steve took his 'partner' to his aunt's as his wedding date :) (after they got dressed together at his house ;))
Danny: what's with the fluffy green flower?
Steve: I just like it.
Max: ah, Detective Williams, I believe Commander McGarrett is doing homage to the tradition started by Oscar Wilde when a green carnation was worn by men who ...
Steve: Max, I beg of you, please shut it.

ever since I saw the conversation between steve and aunt deb in 5x08 it's been on my mind. there are some definite parallels between steve and his aunt, like the fact that they have musical talent but weren't able to pursue it, they never had children of their own but they both have children they help raise that they love like their own, and they spent a long time not having that special person to call their own but once they did find that person they immediately wanted to spend the rest of their lives with them. but this bit is the one that caught my attention
aunt deb: the one thing I never gave up on was love. And I guess it never gave up on me either because HERE HE IS at long last.
steve:
Tumblr media
i think we all have a pretty good idea which HE steve is thinking about, he even lets out a wistful frustrated long 'Eeh' sigh which is like the verbal equivalent of throwing in the towel.
Tumblr media
his patented danny-smile makes a brief appearance, the very same one he bestowed on him just earlier today. even if the pronouns didn't conveniently match, there's only one person who makes him smile like that so I don't doubt that's whom he's thinking about in that moment. danny is, to use deb's words, steve's 'most profound and life altering' relationship, that's as good as canon.
here comes the saddest part
Tumblr media
let the records show that up until this point cath's name does not come up at all and obviously she's not in the episode (unlike danny who is steve's date to the wedding), aunt deb is the one who brings her up because she assumes, like many people in steve's life.
just like the writers want us to think his wistfulness is about cath but steve is never the one to bring her up, other people do it, he just lets them assume in that way closeted queer people do so we aren't technically lying. he never lied he just doesn't correct people. besides it's pretty obvious he doesn't miss cath when danny is around, even she knew he would be okay without her because he has danny.
for steve it's less embarrassing to let it seem like he's pining after the one that got away rather than admit he's been in love with his best friend for years with no hope of anything coming out of that situation. he was hopeful once and we know how that turned out. 'i did' with the subtext of 'never again'.
