it's sad how many reviews and stuff around tmbg seem to centre linnell as the sole dark and creepy writer of the band, never really crediting flansburgh too. do "hide away folk family," "dirt bike," "rabid child," "black ops," "cloisonné" mean nothing to them, smh.

I fully went into tmbw-interp-tab conspiracy when I first heard ''sleeping in the flowers'' lmao#I thought that song was about somebody getting murdered#the title seemed like a euphemism to me#it's actually. according to flansburgh. just about getting high in central park#and it's inspired by itchycoo park by the small faces which I knew and loved before and it's GREAT go listen to that. it's '60s psychedelia#so the lyrics are prob fantasising about spending time with the crush and essentially playfully talking sweet nothings together#bc they're stoned and in love#but honestly I thought ''you proclaim that you're an island. I proclaim that I'm one too''#''I declare that I am england. you declare that I have drowned''#sounded to me like someone trying to get away and be alone but the other person not getting the hint#esp bc the narrator introduces themself as not wanting to be ''known as the creep''#the part about getting a ride home with a drunk guy ''who showed me how to spin my head round and round''#sounded like the driver helping them get their story straight/take their mind off it#and the narrator feels they came across as ungrateful about their advice in their shocked state#plus the way the instrumental between the verses and chorus changes from fuzzy and gritty to lighthearted brass#like it's catching you off-guard#but it's not about any of that it's about being high#anyway none of that is an example of a genuinely creepy flansburgh song but

watched the musical demon show (don't wanna name it so this post isn't in the tags) at the behest of an IRL friend and i can already tell this is going to be a piece of media where i absolutely cannot stop thinking about it, not because i really love the show as-is, but because it has so many individual components i really like and find incredibly fun or compelling, and i'm so frustrated that it doesn't come together for me
i think the main thing i can say about it as a show, setting aside some of the insensitive choices that were made that i really don't feel qualified to tackle or talk about, is that the entire thing sort of gives off this vibe of someone really excited to show you every single oc they made in high school and college and i very genuinely mean that in both the best and worst ways possible
there are some good hooks for season two though so i will absolutely give them that
#the vibe is just like... they are just soooo excited to get all their ideas out that it becomes... messy and badly paced#like there are so many moments that are cool or fun or emotional in a vaccuum but they don't connect fully y'know#because this arc or character was JUST introduced so there isn't proper build up. everything moves too quick#and it's frustrating because you can TELL that the people making this show love their ideas and characters#and i more than get thta! i am also someone with a lotta ocs i love to blab about#but i think they have been working with them so long that they#a. assume we are already just as attached to them as they are without always doing that work#b. assume we've seen all the supplemental material which. i have not#and i don't think that a professional show is the type of thing where there should be a barrier of entry that involves like#podcasts and comics and twitter threads and IC instagram posts about characters to do that emotional/lore legwork y'know#i love lore and supplemental stuff obviously but this should still be like#a satisfying experience for me a person who saw the pilot however many years ago and then has not interacted with the show or fandom since#idk man stuff felt rushed and messy and i wish i liked it more#it needed more slow moments i think. the two scenes where the group all drinks together (minus one awful joke in the bar scene) are like#the best in the show to me becase i actually believe these guys are FRIENDS. i wanna see them hang out more!#i wanna see them actually really grow to like each other organically!!! i wanna see them build connections and grow better slowly!!!#songs absolutely slap though. soundtrack is probably gonna be in my spotify unwrapped 2024#i love me a musical and that inspiration is on its sleeve which i love#also imo the humor isn't great usually. it's very juvenile imo and sometime that works but it often doesn't#(for me at least humor is obviously SUPER subjective)#also tonally they have this 'have your cake and eat it too' issue which bugs me. it's exemplified by the v's (one in particular)#actually i could go on a whole rant about the v's if anyone is interested because god i have some Thoughts#and i think my issues with the v's (namely one v) encapsulates many issues i have with the show#despite all this rambling i actually did enjoy a lot of my time with it. i just don't think it was well-written if that makes sense

all of the previously untranslated "dear society" suddenly got uploaded to mangakakalot a couple weeks ago out of no where so yes i DID read it and yes i DID cry doing so. several times in fact. i really liked it.
#(these tags contain spoilers)#a lot of the visuals were genuinely so cool too#like the way metaphorical immediacy was used to symbolize emotions was just perfect#i especially loved this one scene in the early chapters where hanakos telling kanesho who she likes#and is drawn as if shes stabbing him in the chest#and there isnt a cut back to ''reality'' for it- its fully depicted as if thats whats going on even though the audience clearly#just a metaphor#sometimes it was literally what was going on top of being a metaphor though. like when he just like#casually took out his old school uniform and burned it in some random ladys fire#the timeskip was also funny bc he was so ''damn. i hate society but i participate in it. curious.''#also i like how hanako wasnt the wife foreshadowed at the start#like his initial crush on here was obvs pretty dependent but not in an unusual way for young teens lol#but it shows that that doesnt really matter passed highschool. like he said himself his world grew#i also really liked mizuho he was just a really cool guy#i fully expected him to be a bait and switch douchebag but he really wasnt. he was just cool and supportive#even when he got dumped! like#kanesho apologizing bc he likes girls and cant force himself to be in a relationship w a guy#(and mizuho at the time interpreters this to mean hes a lesbian)#his response is just. you have nothing to apologize for....#ALSO a big fan of kino he was just such a great mentor for kanesho#obviously w different experiences like kino says. hes a gay man and kanesho is a trans guy so its different#but theres overlap and solidarity. they were both unfairly ostracized at school and kino was such a great support bc hes BEEN THERE#when he graduates and leaves his uniform for kanesho w the note ''now its your turn''#dude. unreal. screaming crying throwuing up#loved the school nurse too she was just so supportive and nice. thank you school nurse for being cool. sorry i forgor your name

#tm#thinking several things. none of them coherent.#it's wild that this season starts with her stance pretty much being 'i'm the actual cop here. i can handle the danger. (i'll protect you)'#(and that continues here obviously) and then the season ends w/ (...*part one of the finale has) her in the most danger she's been in so fa#kind of similar to 6.01 where she insists on dealing with red john like any other suspect and then she gets into 'the most danger she's...'#and it's not so much that she's being....punished by the narrative for thinking/dealing with things in that way#(although there are shades of that i guess you could kind of read it that way too)#it's just red john is NOT like any other suspect he's not even like the worst suspects she's dealt with he's just on a different level#also wild that her version of fixing this is at great (professional and personal really) loss to herself#they said 'never forget; lisbon is an eldest sibling (eldest daughter at that)#idk it hurts to see her do it and take the punishment so naturally but i do appreciate that they never let you forget how#that informs her as a character that's great for me personally#meanwhile that little blonde moron (affectionate) is over there again like 'i don't want you in danger' 'i don't want lose you'#he's EXHAUSTING but ON THE OTHER HAND this makes me crazy too because like#he's the civilian here and he KNOWS he's the civilian and the show makes sure YOU know HE knows#he is not a 'stay in the car' [immediately leaves the car to come help in the fight] kind of civilian#(like he IS but not in this way...you get it)#he runs away from fights; he shrinks and cowers when threatened/seeing a weapon; he still gags and uses a hanky at some bodies#like he's just a GUY and he fully embraces that and yet STILL#his first instinct - demonstrated most physically in the s1 finale and....most of s7 but verbally/emotionally throughout#is to protect her; in whatever way he can#and most times that's lying to her; keeping secrets; going off and doing stupid shit; putting himself at risk without telling her anything#but that's ok in his book (....maybe not ok but it's better)#him hurting her is one thing; it's something he might be able to come back from; he can work towards her forgiving him#(even if he does a piss poor job of it sometimes alskdj)#but her getting hurt because of him is not something he can fix; it's something neither of them might come back from#and no matter how strong and capable and smart (and amazing and pretty we get it you're in love with her) he thinks she is#he can't risk her getting hurt....so sometimes he hurts her instead#just kind of....spiraling over them. doing great. clearly.

i have lots of. thoughts about like why the wp as a project has turned out the way it has and lots of those thoughts are really good sweet ones about community and then lots of frustrations too i think
#ramblings#not gonna get super into it i don’t think#but i think the good stuff is really good#like it’s been absolutely bonkers amazing to get to see so many people#participate in making something so dear to them yk?#like we each brought a piece of ourselves to this and wove it in#in ways that are so intrinsic to the project that you can’t get them out#and then. i’m frustrated too#because of high school drama and how that splintered stuff#but also like. failure to communicate between parties waxing and waning interest#stepping on each others toes without regards#what ‘ownership’ over the project looks like and should look like#like i still want to write it. i feel like i am still writing it!#i want to do everything in my power to make it come true#but how much of that gets conveyed? how much of my narrative power#and power over decisions did i lose due to initial anxiety about getting in the way?#and then again. failure on all ends to really properly communicate what we were looking for#leaad to lots of varied conflicting and overlapping arcs that were never fully understood#n now some ppl r showing interest in writing it again which is GREAT! hi guys!!!#however i feel bad i guess? because we’ve spent time quite literally reworking all kinds of things#to make it fit because people stopped seeming to care?#so how do you say hey yeah ur character well i’ve just gone and developed them#and i want to give everyone the space to write because i want to hear everyone’s ideas and that really matters to me#and i don’t want my friends to see the finished project and be like hey wtf#this isn’t right#but like. hurgh#ANYWAYS SORRY#whittled pantheon#i love wp community. i miss thé wp community#‘not gonna get super into it’ GETS INRO IT

part of me wants to write a novel post about TBB and what the show means to me, but part of me also wants to actually make a video speaking to the camera so I can vocally dictate exactly how special and important the show is to me (even though I know I’d just be a weeping mess the entire time lsdkfjghuiflsdk)
