THE GROUP NAME IS STUPID. i was joking it would be "SuperStar" bc the show name literally translates to "asia super star group" but. i think that would be better guys...
did i know the hong kong trainees were going to debut? yes. am i HAPPY about it? Well.

Summary:
American journalist Nick Orton is caught up in the world of Chinese gods and monsters while on a search for the long lost manuscript to 'Hsi Yu Chi' (The Journey to the West) by Wu Ch'eng En. He is accompanied on his journey by a humanoid ape with incredible strength and magical powers, a humanoid pig-man, and his brother-in-arms, an ex-cannibal. Based on one of the greatest stories in Chinese history.
Nicholas Orton (played by Thomas Gibson) is an American businessman who has lived in China for several years. He has a chance encounter with a beautiful Chinese lady (played by Bai Ling) who says that he is the only one who can save the world from reverting five-hundred years. He is unswayed by this until many modern buildings begin disappearing before his eyes. This mystical lady (revealed later as Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion) transports him to a portal which offers entrance, through the teachings of Confucius (played by Ric Young), to the ancient Chinese underworld.
When Orton (soon to be named The Scholar From Above) reaches the other side of the portal, he finds that his studies of Confucius will come in handy for the path that lies ahead. Orton's first action is to rescue Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, from the mountain in which he has been imprisoned for centuries. Wukong travels with Orton in his quest to save the original manuscript of Journey to the West from retroactive destruction; if the story itself is erased from history, all of the people who were ever inspired by the lessons it teaches will be worse off, and history will permanently change for the poorer. They are later joined by Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) and Sha Wujing (Friar Sand) to help them on their way.

I’m quite pleased with how Yan Liang and Wen Chou came out. I’m always irritated by RoTK media that portrays every man who loses a duel to the main characters as ‘Beta-Lu Bu’s. So I changed their method. Instead of being an ‘Officer-Slayer’, Yan Liang’s more like a Commando Leader while Wen Chou demonstrates aptitude in tactics and leadership as well as strength, speaking with Guan Yu and Zhang Liao and trying to encourage them to join Yuan Shao.
Xu You is another curious individual. An unprincipled social-climber and churlish blackmailer. He’s the sort of guy who’d put ‘Honest’ before his name, profiting off the venomous intrigue between Yuan Shao and his half-brother and then between Yuan Shao’s sons, keeping and selling secrets in exchange for elevation. Cao Cao knows him already and the games he plays.
As to Zhang He, well, I think that speaks for itself.

Arsenal Military Academy 烈火军校 Review
So after watching Ancient Love Poetry, I wanted to check out more of Xu Kai's work and I came across this drama and as before, I started this drama without looking into anything other than the fact that Xu Kai is in the cast.
I'm not a professional critic, just a casual drama watcher.
I subscribed to iQiYi so I was able to watch it without ads and stuff but I am not sure of the English translation as iQiYi only allows you to show one language subtitle at a time.
Onto the review.
Plot
I would say that the plot is using a classic concept but turning it into its own plot. So Xie Xiang decided to crossdress and become her brother Xie Liang Chen and join the Arsenal Military Academy. She joins the 7th batch of students and become roommates with playboy Gu Yan Zhen, friends with Huang Song, Shen Jun Shan, Zhu Yan Lin and Ji Jin. She endures the challenges of a military school while trying to survive as the Japanese want to take over the territory.
Okay, so the actual plot is more complicated than this but I think it is also because there is a lot of back story of other characters. You could even say that the actual couple do not have so much screen on time which I do feel that they need. (But given that they deleted the kiss scenes for whatever reason, I do think more of them might have been edited out. If you don't know what I am talking about, go search it on YouTube.)
I would say the biggest plot gap for the drama is how Xie Xiang manage to even become her brother. So her brother actually died in a car crash which is not like s super secret thing but the academy did not know about it? I find it extremely weird that they do not know about it honestly. Secondly, how she managed to get past the body checks. I have no idea how she can just scrape pass the first one. Thirdly, does no one suspect her? To me the fact that she did not use the public bath is a big sign since I can tell you that most military guys are like free with their body in a sense and only a few people suspected her.
On the other hand, I also like that there is no big reveal of her identity that just lead her to dismiss and such, the plot took advantage of her reveal which I really think was good.
Also, it was only pretty late in the show where they actually 'finalised' the couple because I would say that any episode before 34, the couple was actually not even there I would say. Like yes Gu Yan Zhen liked her from the beginning but Xie Xiang actually only realised her feelings pretty late which I do think is another good point because most shows like this also show the female falling in love too fast almost. And Gu Yan Zhen has so much of the second male lead syndrome that he might actually be the second male lead.
Commenting on one part where Qu Man Ting receives an invitation for the auction for the golden seal, I do think that they should have portrayed Xie Liang Chen to be more confident as in the scene, Gu Yan Zhen, Huang Song and Shen Jun Shan were like smiling/smirking but he was the only one frowning which made the scene feel disconnected. If they portrayed him to be more confident in a sense I do believe that it would be more thrilling.
Acting
Bai Lu who plays Xie Xiang/Xie Liang Chen is a pretty famous actor. I actually have seen one of her dramas (Love Is Sweet) but I really could not tell that it was her. It might also be because of the fact that I actually am like okay with the drama that I watch that is why I did not have an impression of her. Anyway, she does act like a male pretty well, I would say that she looks most like a male with her hair down but since they had to gel up their hair, she actually looks more feminine. Her voice got dubbed and I can honestly see why because her voice naturally is quite feminine so it is pretty obvious that Xie Xiang is a female if they did not dub her.
Xu Kai plays Gu Yan Zhen in the drama. Firstly, he looks SO GOOD dressed in Min Guo period setting (like Hu Yi Tian so maybe Min Guo period dramas are my weakness). His acting here is also pretty good but also definitely different from the dramas that I have seen him in. He is a playboy here but is actually quite a soft person on the inside and the acting does him justice.
Gao Yu Er who portrays Xian Rong in the drama is also such a good actor. I think it is easier to act as a good person than an evil person but she does it with no guilt in a sense(?) Like most dramas would show that the evil would die regretting what they have done/have some guilt at the end but for this drama no. Like I would say Xian Rong as also given up on Shen Jun Shan at the end where she was willing to kill him too and I really appreciate that. She is like the perfect evil. (This is unrelated to AMS but I just finished There Was Once A Lingjian Mountain and she portrayed the Lady Boss and I really like her acting even more so I do hope to watch more of her dramas in the future.)
I do not really want to talk about the other characters since I do not really have the time but here are some notes on them.
The voice of Qu Man Ting is actually the actress herself.
I really like the way of Shen Ting Bai loves Qu Man Ting, you can see that he is more mature(?) in a way and it really is like the perfect example of selfless love/unreciprocated love/liking your childhood friend.
The scene where Gu Yan Zhen and Shen Jun Shan is competing to drink, they did actually drink real beer since they did not know (but they spat it out immediately so the scene in the drama might have used fake ones).
Spoiler here. I am glad that Huang Song died without knowing that Xie Liang Chen is Xie Xiang because Huang Song would be a character to me that should be kept pure almost.
There is only technically 8 people who knew that Liang Chen was a female before the great reveal but I do suspect that 1 more person knew but did not say it out. They are Tan Xiao Jun, Gu Yan Zhen, Shen Jun Shan, Shen Jun Shan's helper/friend, Guo Shu Ting, Xian Rong, Xian Rong's bodyguard, Li Wen Zhong. I do think Yu Jie actually knows but did not say anything. I also think Qu Man Ting was sort of suspicious but was not a firm I believe that he is a she kind of thing.
Setting/Clothes
I think the budget that went into filming in adequate as the clothes, scenes, gunfire and stuff are well portrayed.
OST
Not bad, the opening song and the song sang by Bai Lu and Xu Kai was the most memorable.
Overall, I would give it a 8.5/10. I can see why some people would avoid it but I do think that they should give it a try. Also it made me notice two more actors Meng En (Zhu Yan Lin) and Ji Jin (Wang Yi Zhe) which I am glad to know more about.

DW Potential Additions Tier List
So I made some spreadsheets but decided I was putting in too much work so here’s a quick summary.
I was grading on a scale of 1-5. 1 was characters I really don’t htink would add anything good, but who I thought some might suggest (like Cao Zhi, Jia Nanfeng, Pan Zhang, Zhao Guang, Zhang Ren, etc.) 2 is people who could maybe work under very specific circumstances, like a big narrative shift or a lot of related characters being added, or who might be fine but aren’t nearly as good as some other options (like Cheng Yu, Cao Xi, Wu Jing, Mi Zhu, or Gao Gan). These don’t really make the cut for discussion, so if you don’t see a name you’re expecting, I probably put them in one of those tiers for some reason.
Tier 3 are characters who would be fine. Just fine. They either did enough to make themselves noteworthy, or have enough of a connecting to existing narrative and cast that they’d probably add something worthwhile. Not the ones I’d be most excited about, but the ones I couldn’t make too many complaints over.
Tier 4 are great adds. Characters I really want to see, who could really expand the cast in worthwhile ways.
Tier 5 are characters I forget aren’t in these games already because why are they not here?
I’m not going to explain every decision here because I’m sure there will be followup questions. Yes, I’m aware that Jin is overrepresented, because it’s the smallest of the main factions.

1st Year of Taihe [“Grand Harmony”], Spring, 1st Month, yiyou [30 January], New Moon, a decree said:
We early inherited the precious legacy, and feared [We] would not be capable of shouldering it, yet Heaven's gifts altogether culminated, and the Earth's auspicious omens also responded, the wind's harmonious air at sunset [?], Heaven and Man interchanged and united. How were We, immature and lacklustre, able to cause it? In truth, it depended on the assistance of the gods, the honoured, and the seven temples in sending down blessings.
Now the three annuaries announce the beginning, the honoured respond with intersecting nearby [?]. Ought to follow the start of sunlight, and in concord with the scriptures modify the inaugural. Should change the present title to be the First Year of Grand Harmony.
On xinhai [25 February], a decree said:
Now the shepherds of the people and Us together govern Under Heaven. It is proper when selecting for compulsory service, to before that encourage and exhort, assess their water and land, and do the utmost to fully expend the land's advantages, to make the farming men outside spread out [?], and the mulberry women inside industrious. If [someone] make light of having summons and issuing out, [they] cause the theft of the people's time, and so infringe on and arrogate hierarchy. For people who have not followed the lengthy teachings, and who are idle in farming and mulberry work, apply criminal punishment.
Erected the Taihe [“Grand Harmony”] and Anchang [“Calm Glory”] Halls.
On jiyou [23 February?], a person from Lüeyang in Qin prvoince, Wang Yuanshou, assembled a multitude of more than 5 000 families, and titled himself as the Surging to Heaven King.
Famine in Yunzhong, opened the granaries to relieve and aid.
2nd Month, bingyin [12 March], people from Hanchuan, Quan Hui, Tan You, and others, led each other to belong to the interior. Settled them in Bing province.
On xinwei [17 March], the Inspectors of Qin and Yi provinces, the Duke of Wudu, Yu Luohou, chastised and routed Yuanshou, captured his wife and children, and sent them off to the Imperial City.
On guiwei [29 March], the states of Gaoli, Qidan, and Kumoxi each dispatched envoys to court to present.
3rd Month, gengzi [15 April], summoned the Great General who Conquers the West and Inspector of Yong province, the King of Dongyang, Pi, to be Minister over the Masses.
On bingwu [21 April], a decree said:
Our government and rule has many deficits, calamity and disaster again and again rise up. Last year there was plague among the cattle, the dead and ill were the greater half. The profit of ploughing and cultivating will be diminished and reduced. Now the eastern commencement [spring] is already risen, and people must practice a trade.
Should direct there to be supervision and examination of fields and farming. Those who have oxen will apply themselves industriously in regular years. Those without oxen doubly contribute in the remaining years. For each husband, regulate and manage fields of 40 mu, for middle son 20 mu. Without causing people to have excess strength, the land will be lacking in profit.
The states of Kumoxi and Qidan, each dispatched envoys to court to present.
Summer, 4th Month, bingyin [11 May], the state of Ruanruan dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
On dingmao [12 May], favoured Baideng Mountain.
On renshen [17 May], favoured Guo Mountain.
The King of Le'an, Liang, passed away.
Decreed to restore the former King of Dong commandery, Lu Dingguo, to office and feudal rank.
5th Month, yiyou [30 May], the Chariot Drove to pray for rain at Wuzhou Mountain. Soon after there was timely rain, great and widespread.
The state of Ruanruan dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
Autumn, 7th Month, renchen [5 August], the Palace Attendant, Opening Office with Rites Similar to the Three Ministers, and Inspector of Qing Province, the King of Jingzhao, Zitui, passed away.
On gengzi [13 August], settled the three grades of death penalties.
On jiyou [22 August], the Taihe and Anchang Halls were completed.
Erected the Zhuming [“Vermillion Light”] and Sixian [“Thoughtful Worthiness”] Gates.
This Month [26 July – 24 August], Liu Yu# died. His younger brother Zhun was usurpingly installed.
8th Month, renzi [25 August], a great amnesty Under Heaven.
On bingzi [18 September], a decree said:
Artisans, merchants, grooms, and lackeys, each have their allotments. Yet there are ministers indulging in excess, sometimes sullying the pure current. From now on, when within a household there are those who are artisans or labourers, only keep the original section assistant and below. Normalize the sequence and then confer [?]. If there are those whose ladder step relies on original deeds, or who through their service have settled the state, do not follow this regulation.
On wuyin [20 September], Liu Zhun dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
9th Month, guiwei [25 September], the state of Ruanruan dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
On yiyou [27 September], decreed the crowd of subjects to settle the statutes and orders in the Taihua Hall.
On xinmao [3 October], the state of Gaoli dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
On gengzi [12 October], erected the Yongle [“Forever Happiness”] Excursions Watchtower Hall in the Northern Park.
Dug out the Shenyuan [“Divine Vortex”] Pool.
The various states of Cheduoluo, Western Tianzhu, Shewei, and Diefuluo each dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
Winter, 10th Month, guiyou [14 November], feasted the Imperial district's old and elderly, 70 years old and above, in the Taihua Hall, and bestowed hence clothes and dress.
This Month [23 October – 21 November], the states of Kumoxi and Qidan each dispatched envoys to court to present.
Again decreed that for those 70 and above, one son was not to follow on service.
The state of Qiuci dispatched envoys to court to present.
Lu Zhun's Defence Master of Jialu, Yang Wendu, dispatched his younger brother Shu to assault and capture Chouchi.
On bingzi [17 November], executed the Inspector of Xu province, Li Xin.
The states of Kumoxi and Qidan each dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
11th Month, guiwei [24 November], decreed the General who Conquers the West, the Duke of Guangchuan, Pi Huanxi, the General who Garrisons the West, Liang Chounu, and the General who Pacifies the West, Yang Lingzhen, and others, to lead a multitude of 40 000 to chastise Yang Shu.
On yiyou [26 November], state of Tuyuhun dispatched envoys to court to present.
On dinghai [28 November], a person of Huai province, Yiqi Jichu declared himself Shun's Descendants the Fulfilling King, and assembled a multitude at Zhong Mountain. The Inspector of Luo province, Feng Xi, chastied and wiped him out.
Intercalary Month [21 December – 19 January], Huanxi and others, and the army, arrived at Jian'an. Yang Shu abandoned the city and ran south.
On guihai [3 January], the state of Sutipo dispatched envoys to court to present.
On gengzi [9 February?], decreed the Outer Staff Cavalier Regular Attendance, Li Changren, as envoy to Liu Zhun.
12th Month, renyin [11 February], Huanxi attacked and captured Jialu, beheaded Wendu, and transmitted the head to the Imperial City.
On jiachen [13 February], the states of Yuankuo and Tuyuhun both dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
On dingwei [16 February], decreed that since in 8 of the provinces and commanderies had floods, droughts, and locusts, and the people were starving, opened the granaries to relieve and aid.

Human always like to live by water. The Yellow River Basin in China also gave birth to the earliest Chinese culture, and China's floods seem to be quite frequent, the five thousand years of Chinese history also was a history of water control.
In the Chinese legend, the water God Gonggong fought with the fire God Zhurong, Gonggong damaged the Buzhou mountains which supported the sky and earth, the water came out of the sky river, flooding the world. This was the first great flood. Finally, the human creator Nu WA made a multicolored divine stones out of hot fire
and mended the sky.

我要让所有人都知道我水神共工的厉害
I will let everyone know how sharp I am
Bu zhou shan tan ta ,tian he de shui liu le xia lai
不周山坍塌，天河的水流了下来
Buzhou montains collapsed ,and the water in the Sky’ river came down
Wei le zheng jiu sheng ling wan wu
为了拯救生灵万物
To save the people and other creatures
Nv wa jue ding xiu bu tian dong
女娲决定修补天洞
Nuwa decided to mend the sky
Xiu bu tian dong zhi you yi ge ban fa
修补天洞只有一个办法
These is only one way to mend the sky
Bi xu shou ji tian di jian de bao shi
必须收集天地间的宝石
Must collect precious stones in the universe
Yong zhi re zhi huo lian cheng wu cai shen shi
用炙热之火炼成五彩神石
Make a multicolored divine stone out of hot fire
Zhi you wu cai shen shi cai neng bu tian
只有五彩神石才能补天

All creatures can’t live on the land

可是女娲已经没有力量去拯救他们了
But Nuwa had no power to save them

我的这四条腿可以支撑天和地
My four legs can support the sky and the earth

可是那些人类总是吵吵闹闹的
