Think I said this before? but I did see some people mention they wanted to try watching Akira Kurosawa films and other well known "classic" works by Japanese directors in my notes, and just letting y'all know Tubi has a pretty nice selection of classic Japanese films. Such as:
Stray Dog, Scandal, Sanshiro Sugata 2 (unfortunately not the first film as well) and Dreams by Akira Kurosawa
Tokyo Twilight, An Autumn Afternoon, and Good Morning by Yasujiro Ozu
A Woman of Rumor, Women of the Night, Sisters of the Gion, and Portrait of Madame Yuki by Kenji Mizoguchi
OR if you're into more exploitation/grindhouse film type classics, a huge chunk of the Female Prisoner Scorpion films are on there as well
AND while I'm at it, if you're looking for some horror films on Tubi to watch for Halloween that are also pretty much classics from Japan, they have a nice selection featuring:
The Ringu films, Dark Water and The Complex by Hideo Nakata
Dark Tales of Japan; a made for tv horror anthology featuring episodes by well known Japanese horror directors
Audition and Ichi the Killer (word of caution: a lot of Miike's works are definitely not something you want to go in blind given his propensity for extreme violence on many fronts) by Takashi Miike
Grotesque by Kiji Shiraishi (also very gorey)
And if you're into more B-Movie type fare they have Michio Yamamoto's Bloodthirsty Trilogy: Lake of Dracula, Evil of Dracula, and The Vampire Doll
Again, I do want to caution that some of these movies do deal with sexual violence so definitely do a lil digging beforehand to keep yourself safe of any possibly triggering material; Female Prisoner Scorpion, Grotesque, and Ichi the Killer off the top of my head are some of which I would caution about this.

SYNOPSIS
Tumblr media
A few months following the events of CORPSE-PARTY, Yuka Mochida’s friend Satsuki Mizuhara receives an eerie letter in the mail, inviting her to an old abandoned manor in her neighborhood. She then decides to show the letter to her friends. Her best friend, Yuka Mochida, says she has a bad feeling about this, for one line in the letter stood out in her mind:
"At midnight, the coffin of your heart will open and be offered up."
Yuka tells her friend that she knows once Satsuki enters the mansion, she will never be able to leave. However, Masami and Rina treat the letter with contempt, saying it is trying to make a fool of them.
Despite Yuka’s warnings, Satsuki feels something inexplicably compelling about this particular letter, and she heads out to explore the old abandoned manor with Masami, Rina, and Sugimura. Yuka, worried about her friends’ safety, convinces her older brother and his girlfriend to tag along.
Not long after entering the property, the seven soon realize that they have become trapped...

No film defined the late-70s “McSplatter” wave of grindhouse horror like DRIVE-THRU OF DEATH (1977). Writer/director Ron Sharleton's (Cannibal Quarterback, Garfield: First Blood, CoacHELLa) unapologetically manic debut gore-fest wrote the blueprint for the fast-food sub-genre that would be followed by many more films such as Wiener of Blood (1978), Ice Scream Truck (1978), and Sharleton’s own pizza-themed follow-up Slice of Hell (1979).
Drive-Thru of Death opens with old-fashioned circus clowns in a shadowy ritual with a cult of evil cows (the film does not explain why the cows can speak, nor are they seen again after the opening scene). The groups are angry at the giant fast food chain “McDungles” (an obvious reference to McDonald’s leading to extensive litigation) for their aggressive factory-farming and their clown-themed branding that “cheapens the sacred art of clowning.” The cow priest puts an ancient black magic curse on the blood of all cattle in the region destined for McDungles beef plants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the cursed beef makes its way into McDungles’ restaurants, burger patties begin coming alive as ferocious man-eating beef demons. Meanwhile, the curse has a special effect on the restaurant’s birthday clowns, who become gradually more psychotic as they mutate into grotesque homicidal monstrosities whose flesh drips like melted cheese. The clowns kill the staff and turn McDungles into madhouses of relentless zany violence. The clown working the drive-through window asks unsuspecting patrons the film’s much-quoted catchphrase, “would you like TO DIE with that??”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The infamous third-act birthday party scene is an off-the-rails escalation of horror where the demon clowns infect children with the curse, which their turns their flesh into french fries before possessing them to become demonic murderous clown children.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eventually, townspeople are able to kill the beef demons and the clowns by burning them alive with deep-frier grease. But the damage is done, and the McDungles chain has to shut down permanently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The film’s final shot of a child who survived the birthday party massacre warns ominously, “the children were never the same.”

Today I am asking myself why do I like Terrifier and Terrifier 2. There doesn't have to be a reason for it, and I struggle to find any merit to them other than the dubious quality, inventiveness, and excess of the gore and violence. Maybe that's it, and probably that is literally all there is to the movies - fans all say as much. And if your only thoughts on Terrifier are "I hate that shitty movie," honestly that's fair, more than reasonable, but this post isn't for you so kindly skip along by.
But also the movies don't hit for me in the same way as a bloody rollercoaster ride movie does. For some reason I am unable to comprehend, my mind is insisting the movies are good on an artistic level - my brain insists there is artistic merit, although it steadfastly refuses to disclose what that might be. This isn't an endorsement, by the by, the Terrifier movies are extreme in a way apart from even the French Extremity movement or the whole torture trap Saw era from the USA.
Although in some ways that may be a part of what makes the movies something more than graphic violence alone. They are unpleasant in a way that is malicious - a naked cruelty which in a perverse way is a form of open honesty speaking to truth. There is no detachment from the violence, no easy way to disconnect from it as some sort of mechanical function or take it in as a part of a story. Art the Clown embodies such a totality of unrelenting and unchecked cruelty that it comes around as confusingly refreshing, because it is so rare for any media to be so graphically violent without attempting some framing of the harm - even if only as a plot point. It's masochistic to watch but in a more literal kink way. The Terrifier movies are a safe space to engage with senseless violence and cruelty, to experience the emotional impact of the idea of an uncaring world design only to cause pain, and then to be able to safely leave this mental space physically intact, better equipped for the real world which by nature is not nearly so malicious as Terrifier. Cathartic in the same way as it can be to get whipped or beaten, followed by care and caressing. Maybe.
All that under consideration, a throwaway line from a review has raised a second consideration for me: Are these movies camp? They are wildly exaggerated performances which incorporate large amounts of generally discarded pop culture on purpose. They deliberately incorporate the cheap aesthetics of low budget video nasties, grindhouse movies, and direct to video 80s horror. Everything about Art the Clown and his violent acts is severely over the top from his facial features to his makeup to his mannerisms which are those of a mime rather than a clown. I think it's arguable that the Terrifier movies go beyond simply utilizing a retro aesthetic into performing a kind of horror drag - dressing up in the clothes of the 70s-80s but elevating the content into a hyper-grotesque persona that's almost like everything the film censors and critics from that era thought such movies actually were. It's a movie that purposefully becomes the kind of monster conservatives always imagine about horror, just to throw that right in their face. It is, I think, very arguably camp in how much it is purposefully over the top and self-indulgent about what the vast majority of people would (often rightly) dismiss as artless trash.
Which leads me back around to asking myself if I truly believe what I've written, or if I'm merely trying to find an internal and artistic justification for liking violent and misogynistic horror flicks with nothing of else of substance.

A few brief notes on some films I watched recently-ish (i.e. within the last few months)
Strange Way of Life - A short feature, but I'm kind of stunned that I've not seen anyone talk about it. I mean it's directed by Pedro Almodóvar and has Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal playing gay cowboys. You people should be making .gif sets. It's rather slight and a little out there, but it's pretty good, I enjoyed it.
Poor Things - Mixed thoughts on this one, I like Yorgos Lanthimos but I think this might be one of his weaker films. It drags somewhat in the middle third despite strong performances all around. It has a fantastic visual flair, and a stellar soundtrack, but there is something off about it that is keeping me from declaring it a favourite. It's not the "pedophile apologia" discourse, which I disagree with even if I can see where it's coming from. I might have to stew with it a bit, I do think it was also meant to be deliberately uncomfortable in places. Still, it's a disappointment for me after The Favourite, which was a masterpiece.
Blood Sucking Freaks - Why did I watch this?
O-Bi, O-Ba: Koniec cywilizacji - There is something about the temperament and cultural heritage of Poles that makes them the best purveyors of post-apocalyptic fiction and media. Soviet-era Polish sci-fi always gets high marks from me though (see also: On the Silver Globe, The Hourglass Sanitarium)
Killers of the Flower Moon - Scorsese's best film. Left me filled with a deep sorrow and rage; It's devastating and beautiful. The radio show ending is one of the most cutting and brilliant twists ever committed to celluloid.
The Souvenir: Part II - Altogether weaker than the first part, I still enjoyed it. You should really watch them both though, Joanna Hogg is great.
The Holdovers - One of the most perfect films ever made. It had me openly weeping. Delightful.
Dinner in America - If this had come out at some point in the '90s it would be considered a punk cult classic along the lines of SLC Punk or Ghost World. Loved it.
Gone Girl - Okay I finally watched this ten years after the fact with vague memories of the online discourse of 2014 on sites like Jezebel that proclaimed Rosamund Pike's character a girlboss and declared that she was entirely justified in everything and all I have to say is, what the fuck. Jesus. It's really good though.
No Tears for the Damned - I need to stop watching weird grindhouse shit that Vinegar Syndrome decides to put out, because whoof buddy. A few interesting shots of Vegas in the '60s before it got all family friendly.
The Zone of Interest - It took me a good five minutes to clue into the the fact that all of the "pops" in the background were gunshots as they executed people. That's when my stomach started to churn. The only good Holocaust film ever made (actually let me amend that, the only good fictional Holocaust film ever made as Lanzmann's Shoah exists), as it's the only one to really grapple with the irredeemable reality of its subject matter.

Thanksgiving will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 30 via Sony. Directed by Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever), the 2023 slasher is currently available on VOD.
Based on the faux-trailer from 2007’s Grindhouse, the film is written by Jeff Rendell. Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Gershon star.
No word on what, if any, special features will be included at this time.
After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the holiday. Picking off residents one by one, what begins as random revenge killings are soon revealed to be part of a larger, sinister holiday plan. Will the town uncover the killer and survive the holidays.... or become guests at his twisted holiday dinner table?
Pre-order Thanksgiving.

Fucking hilarious that the BNHA yuri bait can't even muster the strength to limp over the bar for the Bechdel test, meanwhile trashy grindhouse manga Chainsaw Man about the guy who wants to touch boobs both does that and features an on-panel lesbian polycule orgy just to flex.
I wish all those people singing praises to Hirokoshi a very read Chainsaw Man.
