BDBWM Day 12 | Time Travel
original prompt | complete masterlist
Marinette flicks one of her bunny ears. She hasn’t worn the Rabbit in years. Is it possible to be rusty with a Miraculous? She huffs.
She opens up the burrow haphazardly. She has a mission to do.
It’s frightening to think what a Domino effect can do. In normal cases, she will not resort to using the Rabbit Miraculous, but she's running on an ungodly amount of sleep and doesn’t know what to do.
See, Titus just found her precious commissions and saw fit to make the shirts his new toys. And that only happened because Tim accidentally lit his chew toy on fire. Which only happened because Damian misplaced said chew toy. Which only happened because he was busy arguing with Jason one day. And Jason was set off in a bad mood because Bruce took him off vigilante privileges (even going as far as to steal his helmet, weapons, and suit). Her Dad only got irked because he thought Jason was behind a prank in his office.
A prank which Marinette herself initiated.
She finds the right timeline and squeezes into the hole. Unfortunately, it lands right inside Batcow’s barn. She puts a finger up to her lips to keep it from earning Alfred’s attention and sneaks off to the inside of the manor.
Marinette runs to her father’s office, detransforms and bursts inside. “Dad, don’t open that drawer!”
Bruce, in the middle of opening that exact drawer, pauses. “What drawer? I thought you were asleep sweetheart.”
She does a double take. Wait, the string’s not there! The prank’s not in place yet! She checks her pocket watch. True enough, past Marinette is still yet to set up her diabolical plan.
“Nevermind!” She squeaks and shuts the door abruptly.
She dashes through the hall and intercepts her former self (who’s heading to the office). Marinette shakes Past Marinette’s shoulders. “Whatever you do, don't pull off that prank! Your commissions! Our commissions! Uncle Jagged!”
Past Marinette blinks sleepily. “Future Mari? How do I know you’re really me?”
Marinette stares at herself dead in the eye. “Four years ago. At Musée Grévin—”
Her duplicate’s eyes bug out. “Okay! Okay! I get it! Won’t do the prank anymore! Promise!”
At that second, Marinette senses a presence near them. Both Marinettes freeze and turn to their side, where the kitchen is in view. Tim stares back at them, pouring coffee directly on the top of the island rather than his mug.
“I . . . I should get some sleep instead,” Tim mutters.

A few episodes back – I forget which one because my head is so full of Representation now – in one of Emilie’s old videos she referred to Adrien as their ‘little prince’.
It stuck in my head, because again, we have to remember it’s a French show, and ‘The Little Prince’ is a French literary classic. I don’t think it’s a stretch to look at this, considering ‘Le Petit Prince’ merchandise is eeeeeverywhere in Paris, there’s a statue for him in the Grevin Wax Museum, and there are roads named after the author.
If you haven’t read the book, I recommend it. It’s beautiful, albeit very sad, and not very long. Without giving everything away, it’s about a boy with blond curls who comes to Earth from another planet. It is, at its heart, a story about loneliness, relationships, and learning to love, but it is also very much about the distinction between children and adults - namely, that adults have lost the magic, the ability to see things as they ‘truly are’. The adult world is depicted as materialistic and cold, a world of rules and ownership, while the boy knows love is the only thing that matters.
And when I say the book contains a love story…it revolves around the prince trying to nurture and care for and meet the demands of a red rose. Just thinking of Ladybug in red, and how many times Cat brings her / Marinette red roses. (For interest’s sake, other key characters in the book include a fox and a snake.)
I believe when Emilie refers to Adrien as their ‘little prince’…well, in a way, we can see this as him being heir to the empire, with expectations on his shoulders…but it’s that word ‘little’ that makes me feel she is indicating that Adrien is almost a wonder from another world, dropped into the confusing world of adults with bad priorities.
Just like the prince of the novella, Adrien begins his journey painfully naïve but has his eyes opened to the harshness of the world…and rejects all of it, refusing to become like that, as he grows.
I can only hope Adrien has a happier ending than The Little Prince.

I have done further examination of the "longest day ever" and the 5 episodes and special that make it up, and realized that I must have been mistaken in my understanding of the timeline.
We see Adrien fall asleep and even see Nathalie check on him sleeping in Multiplication so my original thought was that this was the end of the canonical day.
However, Multiplication couldn't have taken place after the Paris special as we see the sun rising at the end of the special and the parts of Multiplication that are in "the longest day", are pretty obviously still at night
What we know so far as the timeline:
The events of Risk
The events of Strikeback
The events of Evolution
After this is where it gets tricky, We know at some point Adrien must have fallen asleep, but the time of night that we see him asleep versus the time that we see him awake, implies that at some point, he wakes up.
What might be a considerable clue of what the episode order is, is the fact that Adrien, at the start of the Paris special, rather than focusing on his recent conversation, is still stressing about what he did to Monarch.
Additionally, we see Adrien fall asleep with a phone laying on his chest, it would have been very easy for the alert from Ladybug to have woken him up (I'm pretty sure Adrien is canonically a light sleeper) and gotten him to head to the Grevin Museum
This seems to imply that Multiplication takes place prior to Destruction and Destruction (which is still nighttime) would be prior to the Paris Special.
All of this considered, I offer the amended timeline of "the longest day ever":
The events of Risk

The events of Evolution
The events of Multiplication
The events of Destruction
The events of The Paris Special
