Day Two: Harpoon
Two in one day? It’s more likely than you think! (gotta try to catch up haha)
Taglist: @spiffythespook
CW: Public whump, group whump (ish), creepy/intimate whumper (ish), stabbing via harpoon, blood mentions, Nereus is just having a bad time okay. If I’ve missed anything please let me know!
Word Count: 1,160
The ship was rife with activity in the morning. Deckhands creaked as they ran back and forth above board, while those taking inventory catalogued how much food was left. Hunting implements and nets were brought out upon realizing how little they had in terms of meats, and even the Captain had gone down into the hold to see how well the preparations were doing.
Nereus watched everything carefully, mopping up where a piece of rotten food had been. They had thrown it out before dragging him down into the hold and ordering him to clean it up for them. At least that was all that they wanted to do to him, for now.
He kept his eyes trained on the Captain as he meandered through the hold, watching everyone like a hawk. He stopped next to a human man handling the harpoons, polishing them to make sure they were in perfect condition.
“How are these doing, Namen?” He asked in a low voice. The crewmember flinched, likely not realizing that the Captain was right behind him.
“Uh, I, they’re doing fine, Captain. They should be ready to use,” he stammered, pulling himself together before any real weakness showed.
“Good. Let me know when they’re ready.”
Namen muttered something akin to “yes Captain” and immediately got to polishing the harpoon in his hand. The Captain lifted his head, searching for anything else that might need to be checked while he was down here.
Nereus met his gaze before he could look away.
He tried to pretend it didn’t happen. Instead, he focused on that one stubborn spot against the hull and pressed, swallowing down the fear that curled in his stomach. Hopefully the Captain would shrug him off and just leave him alone. He was so busy, after all, and morning preparations always needed every crewmember to be completed on time.
“Roo,” he warmly greeted, forcing Nereus’ gaze to look back at him. “You interested in the harpoons?”
“N-no, Captain. I was just… listening. I’m just paying attention, Captain.” His voice wavered under the ache of fear. He was surprised anything came out at all.
“Well, you wouldn’t be listening if you weren’t interested now would you? Come here.” The Captain crooked his finger towards him, then bent down to pick up one of the freshly polished harpoons. Nereus dropped the mop in his hand and walked over; it wasn’t like he could say no. The Captain held the harpoon in one hand, and grabbed Nereus’ arm with the other. “Hold up your hands.”
He did as he was told, sending only a half quizzical look to the Captain. Nereus was practically waiting for this to go wrong, for him to get hurt somehow.
He nearly dropped the harpoon when the Captain set the heavy metal in his hands, making the watching crew members laugh at how weak he was. Humiliation burned against his face as he flushed. Even the Captain let a light snort ruffle his features for a moment, before he settled into a cool grin.
“They’re heavy, aren’t they? Real sharp, too. Fling one o’ these at a shark or whale and you’ll be able to pierce those thick hides o’ theirs. Though sometimes…” He lifted it up with a hand, holding it like he were brandishing a weapon. Nereus thought it looked silly, even for a man of the Captain’s size. It didn’t seem to really suit the elegant style that the Captain carried. “Sometimes you can use them yourself. The big things are heavy enough to push someone over, did you know?”
“Um, no, Captain. I didn- AAH!” Nereus shouted as the Captain suddenly lunged forward, hitting him against the thigh and knocking him to the ground. He’s usually dextrous enough to catch himself, but Nereus was so caught off guard that he tumbled into the floor, landing on his back first and knocking the air out of himself.
The Captain put a foot on his chest, holding him down with a simple shift of his own weight. “Then once you’ve got them down on the ground, you can do whatever the fuck you want to them.”
His gaze was cold as he lifted the harpoon and rested it against Nereus’ chest. Nereus’s heart picked up in speed and his breath quickened as he sent his gaze up to the Captain in a wordless plea.
Everyone in the hold had paused in their work by now, watching Nereus and the Captain’s exchange. Even Namen was staring with a curious gaze The crew was waiting in breathless silence to see what was going to happen, like one of those gambling rings they would set up in the cabins, sometimes. The Captain raised his gaze up to take stock of the crew, and then grinned.
“Suppose you lot want me to teach the greenie a lesson on how sharp the harpoon is, eh?” There was sudden cheer all around, and Nereus felt tears spring to his eyes. “Alright, alright. Guess you’re not a member of the crew ‘til you’re stabbed with a harpoon at least once.”
The Captain shifted forward, pressing the harpoon against Nereus’ skin. It stung as it cut against him, making him gasp and attempt to struggle away from the weapon. The Captain’s weight only got stronger, pinning him against the floor and preventing escape altogether.
As it sank further into his skin, drawing blood and making it pool against his throat, Nereus let out a cry of pain.
“Captain, Captain please, I’m sorry!” he begged, reaching a hand up to finally grab onto the harpoon and prevent it from sinking in any more.
“This isn’t a punishment, Roo. No need to apologize to me,” The Captain muttered back.  He pulled the harpoon away from Nereus, who began to sob at the throbbing pain coming from the cut. “Alright, you get what it feels like, now?”
Nereus nodded. He understood. He knew the lesson that he had been taught. Always keep an eye on your work, and don’t stick your nose where it doesn’t belong or you’ll get hurt. Keep your head down and you’ll be safe.
“Good. Now get up and get back to work. That goes for the rest of you, too! Fun’s over, we gotta get those boats in the water before the afternoon,” the Captain’s voice raised to everyone, who all immediately got back their work. “Namen, you might want to repolish this one again. Don’t want the boy’s blood staining it, do we?”
Namen shot Nereus a dirty look, before taking it from the Captain. Nereus didn’t say anything beyond giving him an apologetic look before scurrying over to where he had left the mop, blood trailing behind him.
Guess I’m going to have to clean up the blood, too, he thought bitterly, as he began to sweep the deck once more, unable to stop himself from listening to the Captain’s boots as they slowly walked out of the hold.

A Familiar World
Picture Perfect ——————————————
A short chapter, in which Aiden and Roo find a very pretty field.
The masterpost for AFW can be found here. The chapter post for AFW can be found here.
——————————————
Honestly, this started as an excuse to write some comfort fluff. But! We all need more wholesome content in our lives! So here’s paint dad and his paint cat son goofing around. Enjoy ^^
                                                    ————
White canvas. Green grass. Speckles of yellow sunlight. A dash of cream across a blue expanse. Brushstroke after careful brushstroke, a landscape was taking form. The larger blocks of color were already filled. However, one doesn’t say “the devil is in the details” for nothing. A slow, steady hand and a critical eye were vital to this particular quest. That was one thing the artist had mastered over the years. Capturing the world’s beauty brought him such joy. Thus, Aiden Pingere found himself out in a field, eyes flicking to the forested horizon. Painting might be a bit harder to stop for nowadays, but he wasn’t about to give it up. Not when the light caressed the greenery so sweetly. The questor hummed contentedly to himself as he added more paint to his brush. Ah… he could stay here all day. And they had so far! The field was a perfect place to let Roo romp around. Aiden had asked his familiar to play behind him, but otherwise just… let him run amok. The excited mews behind him made his heart as warm as the sight of a gorgeous horizon. Another round of meows sounded off as he turned back to his canvas. Such a happy sound… Humming thoughtfully, he glanced between his rendition and the field. The grass looked a little too dark. Like it was dusk instead of midday. He needed to lighten it up. “Touch of jade, maybe…?” He mumbled, squinting. “Or pear… ‘s got the yellow I need…” He turned his attention to his palette. There were plenty of colors smeared across it. A smile inducing collage. Jade and pear weren’t there yet, but he could fix that. He set his brush down to wipe off a spot. With the bottom of his shirt, of course. When he was painting, his shirt just turned into a napkin. His own wearable artwork!  Aiden was busy rubbing away paint when something tugged on his pant leg. “Hm-?” He peeked around his palette curiously. A feline familiar stood by his foot. Ah, Roo! He’d been wondering when he’d wander back this way. Aiden waved down at the lil guy. “Hey bud... What’s up?” “Nothin much!” Roo chirped happily. “Jes wanted to see what yeh were paintin’!” His ears were perked up eagerly, gaze full of intrigue. “Yeh been workin on it fer awhile now!” “That I have,” Aiden agreed, chuckling. “You wanna give me some feedback?” “Aww yeah!!! Lemme see!!!” Roo beamed. The familiar threw his paws up instantly. Aiden smirked. What a little ham. Amazing. He scooped him off the ground, ruffling his fur affectionately. Roo squeaked in protest, giggling. Aiden let him get comfortable before turning to the painting. “Sooo… Whaddaya think?” Aiden inquired. Roo’s first reply was a tiny gasp. “Oh!!! Ohhh…” His wide eyes flickered all over the canvas. It was so cool! So pretty! His paws patted Aiden’s arm softly. The sensation drew a fond smile from him. “It’s already so good! ‘S like I could jes jump right in!!!” Roo mewed excitedly. “I love it!!!” The response just made Aiden’s smile wider. “Glad to hear it, roodle doodle. Though I’d advise against the jump. Uuunless you want to try being green,” he said simply. Roo stuck out his tongue, shaking his head. “Nope! I don’t wanna be green! You’re already doin that job for me!” He gestured to the stains on Aiden’s clothes and fingers. “I’m good bein indigo!” Aiden raised a brow at that. An idea crossed his mind. Humming innocently, he moved Roo to one arm. “Alright. Fair. Buuuut…” He smirked, using his free hand to wiggle his fingers mischievously. “What if I want you to join me?” Roo let out another gasp, looking comically offended. “What? How??? Yeh wouldn’t smoosh me on your paintin’!” “Who said I need that paint to make you green?” Aiden teased, winking. As Roo gave another mock gasp, the questor snapped his fingers. His forgotten palette- now wreathed in blue mist- rose up at his side. “I’d say my palette here has plenty to share, eh?” “Nooooo!!!” Roo cried, flopping over Aiden’s arm. “I’ll get lost in the grass!!! An Yeh won’t eveh be able teh find me!!!” “Bold of you to assume that greenies can’t see each other! We’ll be lost together forever!” Aiden sighed dramatically. … a beat of silence passed as the two posed. After a minute, they locked eyes. Roo was the first to start giggling, but Aiden followed soon after. Their laughter rolled across the field in joyous waves.
That night at camp, Aiden held his canvas up to the firelight. A serene smile graced his face. The painting was done now. Long dry, and lovingly signed. The landscape’s beauty captured. But it was the little spot of indigo that really made it a masterpiece. A little laughing cat, bounding freely through the grass. The same cat who slumbered contentedly near the fire. Curled up safe, in a happy dreamland.
Ah, yes. It was a beautiful day. One more neither of them would trade for the world.

Can you rank the chickens based on how cuddly they are?
My chickens?
Probably goes like this from most cuddly to least cuddly
(Beeper and Mimi are still babies so they are of course the most cuddley)
Blue- my special gorl she luv me and suffocate me with her choob
Sugar Cookie- she wants me to hold her gently while i pet her. She will fly to my arm on command.
Greenie- she chooses when she wants attention but when she does she is super affectionate and needy. She is basically a cat
Sassy and Taffy- They are kind of tied they are both really friendly and touchy feely like Sugar
Smores- she is in love with me and is convinced i am the best rooster
Nugget- Both my roos are pretty independent but they still like to be petted sometimes. Nugget is just to busy being handsome
Princess Cream and Cannoli- both of them have bonded pretty closely with each other so they only want to hang out and be petted by me rarely but they arent skittish or anything.
Muffin- very rarely wants me to touch her she is usually to broody brained to care about anything else.
