Psalm 23 Lesson 02: Green Pastures and Still Waters
Jethro was a four-year old boy who went with his family on a church field trip to a sheep ranch. He was given an opportunity to feed sheep. The shepherd gave everyone leafy branches. He instructed them to approach the sheep slowly and get down to look at the sheep eye to eye. He told the group to slowly offer the branches, gently waving them.
The children immediately ignored the instructions and ran towards the sheep, wildly waving their branches. The sheep were scared and ran away to avoid the children.
However, Jethro followed the shepherd’s instruction and walked very slowly towards a sheep. Jethro didn’t need to crouch to look at the sheep eye to eye because he was already very short. Jethro hesitatingly offered the branch to the sheep. To his surprise and delight, the sheep began to vigorously eat the leafy branches from his hand.
Sheep are very timid animals. It takes a calm and patient shepherd to lead sheep.
Let’s read together Psalm 23:2.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me besides the still waters.”
In Israel, the land is not always lush and green, it is only during the rainy season. A shepherd needs to gently guide his flock to away from barren places to green pastures.
Let’s read together Isaiah 32:18; Isaiah 40:11; Ezekiel 34:15-16; and Hebrews 4:1-11.
Why does the shepherd make his flock lie down in green pastures? Not only do sheep need abundant good food, they need rest to be healthy.
Jesus not only provides us our daily bread, He also gives us rest. The Good Shepherd invites every Sabbath to unplug from the world and spend the day with Him in spiritual rest and renewal.
Let’s read together Jeremiah 2:13; Jeremiah 17:13; John 4:10; John 7:38; and Revelation 7:17
Sheep will not drink from a rushing stream even if they are very thirsty. In fact, sheep will not seek out clean sources of water on their own. They will drink from muddy water and get sick. It is the shepherd’s responsibility to lead sheep to still water where they can freely drink.
In the same way, we seek to drink from the polluted waters in the world. Jesus as our Good Shepherd wants to lead us away from those muddy waters. Jesus offers us living water that will always satisfy us.
Psalm 23:2 is a promise that God will provide us with abundance, rest, and peace.
Friend, will you allow Jesus to lead you to green pastures and still waters?

Pillow Promises
Seems the new “sleeping” trend these days is satin pillowcases. That is one of the Christmas presents on my granddaughter’s list last year that I purchased for her for $49. So, when Bed, Bath and Beyond was having its store closing sale, I bought two at $4.50 each. I wanted to see if what “they” said was true and at that price, it was worth the test.
