hello everyone welcome to i talk about benrey for a minute here

as someone who’s watched the entirety of hlvrai at least 6 times, the full vods at least 3, and the cast commentary hovering somewhere around 10, i consider myself to be pretty well-versed in the series. i also kin benrey. this is probably important to my perception of him.

the series is about self-aware AI. its in the title! so it seems obvious enough to me that Benrey was programmed to be the final boss. he was SUPPOSED to be a silly character that antagonizes the protag and throws off the group dynamic, and then it’s a big reveal and you get to beat up this guy that was mean to you!

but he doesnt wanna. hes self aware.

Of all the characters, i think Bubby and Tommy are the most “powerful” in that they were able to break their characters the most. Tommy is a bit of a wild card because he doesn’t usually act like an AI. I view him as the “character you’re supposed to protect” in the party, but somewhere along the way he, too, became self-aware and figured out how to handle his own. I think that’s where the age thing comes in. He was programmed to be a 5-year-old that you’re trying to get out of this dangerous facility! but he didn’t want to be a 5-year-old, he’s smarter than that, he’s capable! so he changed it. Him being the son of Gman also probably helped with him being able to just do that.

I take Bubby and Dr. Coomer as both being tutorial characters. Dr. Coomer is a bit broken, but he still does his best to teach you about things. I think he’s the tutorial NPC that goes “watch out for [x]” and “we can use ropes to cross big pits!” and “we should call them Peeper Puppies!” while Bubby was supposed to be the “here’s how you shoot a gun”

Like, Dr. Coomer does the knowledge about the world, and Bubby does the action. for the video game. And Bubby is supposed to be kinda cold to you, because the action-tutorial NPCs tend to be. Like “what you cant even hold your own? tch, guess ill have to teach you.” But Bubby doesn’t do that. He doesn’t WANT to play the game, he wants to go back home. He liked it before the game was switched on. So he doesn’t teach Gordon shit and just tries to speedrun so the player will leave and he can go back home.

one little scene that stood out to me so much was when the crew is sitting around in a circle with the pigeons. not outside, the other scene with them sitting in a circle and there’s pigeons. why are there 2 of those.

anyways, Benrey is just staring at this pigeon behind Gordon, and singing to it, calmly. And then there’s a loud beep that sounds like the vox, and definitely doesnt come from Benrey. and he suddenly gets up and shoots the pigeon. That reads SO HARD like he was being too soft with the game world, so it pushed him to do something evil randomly. Like a little villain reboot.

Almost everything he does to antagonize Gordon can be read as genuine confusion. He kills random NPCs because he knows theyre not important, and that they can’t feel anything, and that they’ll only slow the team’s progress. And what makes Gordon so mad at him is how often Benrey says Gordon shouldnt be allowed in here. I take that as a similar stance to Bubby. Benrey doesn’t want to be the villain. He doesn’t want the player to progress and make him. That gets more obvious the closer we get to the end, and most people tend to notice it in the last scenes before Xen, where he’s suggesting they go all the way back, and basically begging the player to stop here, at least for a little while.

its really sad, honestly. but i take the cast commentary bits as canon. Which makes it adorable when Benrey comes back into the movie theatre with Gordon and we get

“I wonder what will happen. I bet you know what happens!”

“I win!!!”

He did win. He got to get past being the final boss. He got to join the epilogue. I think, he probably wasn’t supposed to be able to. But these guys broke the game enough that he could. Isn’t that sweet? Isn’t that a nice ending for him? I think he deserves it.

Wayne says he acts like “he isn’t aware unless he’s being spoken to” and I think that fits really well. Like, sometimes his actions are coded into his behavior, so he does them without realizing. And then the player interacting with him (which is the premise of the self-awareness) forces him to actually look at what he did, and sometimes he has no idea how to explain it. Leading to his “huh?”

listen to me. are you listening. i need you to hear this. i need more people to understand benrey. and how much i love him. hes trapped in the narrative, doomed by it to be the villain. but he doesn’t want to be. he clearly cares about the crew in his own silly goofy way. he doesn’t want to fight them. i wrote down everything he said in the finale, and he only says 5 outright malicious lines, all of which are directly after an unnatural pause, like he’s being rebooted again. Some important lines: “I knew this was gonna happen,”

“Stop shooting at me, I have to shoot back, I don’t wanna do that,”

“I didn’t have a big plan, I was supposed to be nice, but you forced me to be BAD so I’m gonna be BAD… friend.” the small, quiet “friend” there gets me every time. even after everything, even after his nature is revealed, he wants to believe theyre still friends.

“Don’t go in there, please… I don’t like that room." The amount of times he sounds so genuinely sad when asking them to stop, or even just saying “bro..” like he’s mourning the friendship they could’ve had. The amount of times he sounds genuinely pained when he’s glitching out and stretching across the screen.

And his last words, said childishly of course, but,

“This isn’t fair.”

bubby almost DEFINITELY made the first moves to gman. i like to think it was encouraged by coomer after bubby was like btw im polyamorus and i also cant stop thinking about gman can i go ask him out. and then coomer became #1 hypeman and would try and force them into scenarios together LMFAO

gman isnt really ever forced into anything though? luckily for bubby he DID hold interest in the bastard and would go along with coomer very unsubtly trying to have them get some one-on-one time

during tommy's birthday party bubby almost definitely started flirting with gman. something about the atmosphere making even mister money bags space god start to relax and have fun a little was when he decided to make his first moves on the guy despite having eyes for him earlier

The train incident was his first attempt to talk but we all know how often gman cameos around in half life 1... bubby almost certainly took notice of black mesa's Latest Old Man Babe

gman probably barely knew how to process being flirted with at first because he's used to being treated with fear and such, and when he does get flirted with it's usually in a way that's like "oh, you're so above me", but bubby would approach it in the way you'll approach someone at a bar

as in shitty pick-up lines and very overt "you're hot as fuck, make out with me" comments. but the phrasing is more bubby's personality than bar etiquette - he's not exactly romeo.

eventually once gman gets used to bubby flirting with him after a while though the script WILL get flipped on him. because gman is no fool. in fact he is VERY observant. half of the time he spent listening to bubby's nonsense flirting (and, occasionally getting responses he didn't know he was even capable of, like an involuntary "oh my" and a blush when he said a particularly romantic line that was probably fed to him by bubby's personal cupid, dr. coomer) he would be picking up on what made bubby a little more nervous to say, a little more hopeful in how gman would respond, and what he seemed to like to hear from dr coomer

after constant passive reception of bubby's moves on him he'll fire back onto bubby with everything he had observed up to that point. even the little comments he'd whine to benrey, coomer, and even gordon when he was willing to listen to bubby. all those offhanded whiny things like "why can't he just x already" would come BITING HIM BACK.

at the end of the encounter bubby is probably rendered speechless and gman toys with him a little more through baby's first kiss from a god. he and coomer would have their own little mini celebration about this later

( and, a little bonus, despite coomer's encouragement, bubby would never actually ask gman out. he's very stubborn on waiting to be confessed to instead, which is why it took so long for him to get with coomer after literal years of flirting. gman ended up learning this too and had to research how the hell you ask someone out since he had literally never had to do that before - he was usually getting asked out and rejecting people because they were doing it for some kind of personal benefit / he doesn't have much interest in dating randoms in the first place. )

Some Notes On My Opposing Force 2 Idea

This is more of an archival/brainstorming post for me, but I'll let y'all see what I'm thinking.

Gman is given a chance to show his employers what Adrian is worth. Gman is absolutely ecstatic (if he can really feel that emotion, it’s not obvious to anyone).

Part of Gman’s plan is to have Adrian form an alliance between Race X and Humans, similar to how Gordon brought the Vortigaunts and Humans together.

Adrian has a love for water (and aquatic life), so once he is released from stasis, the state of Earth’s water bodies makes him burst into tears.

Adrian is dropped off in one of the cities located in what was the southeastern United States (can’t decide if I want to do Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Florida). This part is important due to the wetlands like swamps and bayous that are/were located in these states.

Race X took advantage of the Black Mesa Incident to collect Earth’s resources to fight the Combine, but failed when Adrian disabled one of the last free Gene Worms. The Gene Worms are used by the combine for their dimension-transportation abilities, since they can transport armies without the need to be in that world physically and can allow individuals to go back and forth from both locations at will. The last free Gene Worms transported as many Race X life forms as they could before being acquired by the Combine. I am planning on having Adrian having an additional connection to Race X via some sort of ability gained when he defeated the Gene Worm in Opposing Force.

The swamp and bayou locations on Earth were the most suitable spot for Race X to take refuge, and the shocktroopers do what they can to stay hidden from humans, Xen forces, and Combine alike, since the number of well-trained soldiers are small in number.

The wetlands of the former American southeast are now a toxic mix of Race X, Xen, and dwindling Earth flora, in addition to the pollution put out by the Combine. Going into what the human survivors call the “warring wetlands” is a death sentence for most humans and vortigaunts. Some brave souls venture to the edges of the bayous to harvest what little Earth flora remains, since it fetches a high price and possible decent food rations if sold to the right byer.

Parenthood (especially Fatherhood) is an important part of shocktrooper culture, since it is the father who spends the most time caring and nurturing the offspring. Insulting someone’s father for shocktroopers, is akin to insulting someone’s mother for humans (get ready for sparks to fly, literally). Adrian’s fatherly relationship towards Ben is important for bridging the gap between Race X and Earth for this reason.

Shocktroopers are capable of telepathy, a trait that allows shocktroopers to communicate with other Race X lifeforms and allows the young to pick up on the language of their parents (this is one way you can tell if a shocktrooper is related to another or is from the same clan, since they will have a similar vernacular to each other) .This is the reason why Benjamin can speak English, since Benjamin spent a long time around Black Mesa with the scientists in the lab pre-cascade, and then Adrian during Opposing Force.

Ayxen is a seasoned warrior from Black Mesa, and is absolutely terrified of Adrian when he first sees him. Ayxen eventually grows very fond of Adrian, admiring the human a little more than he maybe should, causing conflicting feelings. Adrian is unaware of this, and when he does become aware, is at a loss for what to do. (this part is still subject to change, but it’s a fact that Ayxen has a sort of obsessive fondness of Adrian that is not necessarily romantic in nature. Still a point of inner conflict for Ayxen, though)

Daynyx is playful for a shocktrooper, and this shows a side of shocktroopers that Adrian grows to appreciate, even if it does get on his nerves sometimes.

ive seen people talking about this a little . and as such i writ down some things .... if u have any questions dont be afriad to send me an ask

- everybody is marked by/is already an entity - coomer and bubby are somewhat younger than they are in the canon series on the basis that it would not make sense for seniors to be working at the magnus institute

- gordon gets hired at the magnus institute after his job as a scientist goes tits up and he needs SOME way to pay for his and his childs living . he becomes a statement reader and helps out on artifact storage - tommy's the feel-good boss , the only reason why gordon got hired was because he wants as much help with the institute that he can get - benreys a janitor. - because of his strengh coomer does research into locations where statements are set , he breaks in usually - forzen researches people and what happened to them after giving in statements , because of his past in the military and the police force its easy for him to do - bubby and darnold are both statement readers, but bubby is a lot more skeptical than darnold is - gman is an avatar of the distortion , however , he still retains some shreds of his humanity. because of it , he comes to visit tommy sometimes :-)

- gordon is either marked by the slaughter or the eye - tommy is marked by the distortion - benrey's an avatar of the stranger - coomer's marked by the hunt and the vast , though he ends up becoming an avatar of the hunt - bubby's an avatar of the desolation - darnold's marked by the corruption and the web(??) - forzen's marked by the web , and later becomes an avatar of it

- in this au , forzen and benrey are brothers - bubby and coomer are married ; coomer isn't aware of the fact that bubby's an avatar of the desolation , nor is he aware of what avatars really are - benrey and tommy are best friends in this au , tommy doesnt get affected by things to do with the uncanny valley so it was easy for him and tommy to make friends - gordon has INCREDIBLY complicated feelings about benrey . he also doesnt get affected by uncanny things but he does think that he's "insufferable" (he's like jon with martin grahhh)
