The thing about Guardian Legendaries is that they're so rarely seen that we often forget that they play an important role in the ecosystem like any other Pokemon. Rayquaza showing up to stop the Aqua-Magma Crisis in Hoenn is probably the most obvious example, but I want to show a case of the opposite, albeit on a smaller scale.

This is a picture of the Auren Ruins in Koryo's Relic Desert. Five centuries ago, it was the region's capital, until sudden desertification led to it being abandoned within a single generation. The cause?

Three Garchomps and four Tyranitars, left behind by eastern raiders as they were driven out. This was before Pokemon training had fully developed, so it took a decade before the invasive species could be put down. By then, the lush plain had dried up and the Goldensoul River that Auren City relied on had disappeared.

A single modern team's worth of Pokemon did this. In ten years, they wrought so much damage that it displaced thousands of people and irreversibly changed the landscape so much that 500 years later, the area is still yet to recover. It probably never will.

This doesn't happen in regions like Tandor or Alola, that have powerful Legendary Pokemon that can reverse ecological damage or prevent it from happening in the first place. But not all regions are so lucky. Some have Legendary Pokemon that are the cause of destruction, while others simply don't have Guardians at all. Koryo is one of the latter, which is why the Relic Desert happened.

That's not to say all Legendary Pokemon are benevolent protectors of their region. At the end of the day, they are still wild Pokemon, and many act as such. And life is resilient enough that it can spring up even in the wake of destruction.

Part of why the modern Koryon government hasn't tried to restore the Relic Desert is because it's become an ecosystem in its own right, with as much biodiversity as any other. The picture is one I took when I visited the Auren Ruins last summer. New Pokemon that could survive the harsher environment moved in, and they don't deserve to be forced out of their habitat just so we can roll back the ecological clock.
