hello! recently ive had an obsession with drinks, and almost each night ive been making one, ranging from chai latte to orange julius, to milkshakes. but ive been running out - do you happen to have any recipes? nonalcoholic would be preferable, and names are just fine too unless it’s not a wide spread concoction. thank you!!!
How about instead of a recipe, I give you some less-used ingredients and you can DIY some combinations?
Red Bell Pepper Juice! You can sometimes buy it at specialty stores, or you can blend/crush/mash some red bell peppers and strain the juice out yourself. I really like it combined with simple syrup and lime juice for a rich mocktail.
You can also use other vegetable juices in fun little drinks. Carrot juice can be surprisingly sweet. Sugar Beets are named that for a reason. There's a lot of folks down here in the south who just drink sweetcorn juice.
You can get a deeper, smokier flavor by braising your veggies until they char a little, before juicing them.
Seedlip Spice 94, for an herbal, conifer-like flavor. I love this paired with lavender syrup, in any clear soda. It tastes like summer!
Coconut Cream (not coconut water! It's different!) Can be used as a base instead of ice cream, with frozen mango for an ultra-creamy, richly flavored frozen drink. The ratios here will be different, so use your own judgement.
Consider going to a foreign food market, and buying like... random canned fruit you've never heard of. Using lychee syrup is delicious. You can also look around for fruits and drinks you've never tried. There's a whole world out there of packaged drink powders!
Gochujang sweetened with honey and lime, cut with ginger beer is... an experience. Get the ratios right, and it's addictive.
Think about muddling herbs/fruits into your clear soda, which aren't just 'mint and cucumber' - Basil and lime. Dill and apple. Blackberry and Anise.
Had muddled basil and simple syrup in some iced coffee recently. It was intriguing. Good? Not sure, but it compelled me.
Be adventurous and you'll never run out of new flavor combinations to try~

Hi! Sorry if this is annoying, I’m shy and didn’t want to come off anon.😭 but I’be been following you for so long and love your blog. I’m going solo to Hawaii in February and I’m curious about what foods you think I should try? Thank you in advance. 🌴
Hii! You are not bothering me, thank you so much for following my page!<3 I will just share the things I like to eat and you can keep what sounds good to you. :)
I mostly eat Borinki food at home, which is Puerto Rican-Hawaiian fusion cuisine. I have some favorite fusion restaurants, but I'd rather not publicly disclose their names. If you're interested, I can share them with you privately!
Other than that I like
Manapua: steamed bun stuffed with filling, you can get pork, chicken, fish, sweet beans, veggies, sweet potatoes, or a mixture. My favorite are the spicy chicken and sweet potato or the plain vegetable from Sing Cheong Yuan, it’s a Chinese bakery in Honolulu.
Spam Musubi: spam sushi!! It’s two pieces of fried spam, usually teriyaki flavor, with sticky rice in the middle and wrapped in nori seaweed. I go to Musubi Cafe Iyasume, they have a few locations on Oʻahu and a variety of flavorful spam marinades and condiments from scratch. I get the teriyaki spam with avocado, they are $3 each!
Huli Huli Chicken: chicken marinated in soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup and pineapple juice. Really good and flavorful, most times this is the chicken that goes into the Manapua with veggies. I like it best that way.
Hawaiian chow mein: regular chow mein with light teriyaki sauce. I eat it with pickled pineapple and coconut shrimp. You can get it at almost any food truck on Hawai’i for 10-15$, they give a big serving with lots of vegetables. I always have leftovers.
I also like Lo’i Feke, which is Tongan🇹🇴, not Hawaiian but you can still get it on Hawai’i.😋 It’s tender chunks of octopus that get made with coconut cream milk and red or white onions, then cooked in an umu, which is a Polynesian earth oven. It’s often served with sweet potato or yam and I get a tortilla.
Furikake Mix: You can get it at snack shops and sometimes 7-11. It’s a sweet and salty baked mix with chips, cereals, pretzels etc and tossed with soy sauce, butter, and furikake rice seasoning (fish flakes, salt, herbs and seaweed)
Sweets
Fruits!!!: lots of fruits that you can’t really find on the mainland. It’s probably like 50% of what I eat, I’m obsessed with Haleʻiwa Bowls too when I have time to get there, or else I just make my own smoothie bowls. For fruits I love starfruit, abiu, dragonfruit, lychee, longan, mangosteen, passionfruit, star apple. Most fruit stalls/groceries have regular fruits too like apple, tangerine, banana, mango, plum and pear. I make korean hwachae once or twice a week if I’m home, which is a bowl with chopped fruit, milk and a carbonated drink. I do strawberry or banana milk+wild bill’s cream soda and put in lavender and hibiscus flowers for antioxidants! It’s my favorite thing to eat!
Fruit Sandwiches: I go to Mana and get the strawberry banana Oreo sandwich or blueberry marmallow sandwich. I eat them on the beach all the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shave ice: Like a snow cone but 100 times better. I’ll eat any flavor any time any day lol. It was started by Japanese immigrants but there’s so many varieties now because all of the different ethnic groups. My favorite is my grandpas recipe from Puerto Rico, it’s made with Coquito, cinnamon, sweetened condensed milk, fresh strawberry syrup and a sweet Polynesian spice blend!
Haupia: coconut jelly pudding dessert or coconut cream jello bar. It’s a firm jello texture and served in a square.
Butter mochi: like a Hawaiian blondie with butter and coconut.
If you're on Hilo side, go to Three Ladies mochi! They make the cutest mochi and they taste better than in Japan in my opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just stuff I like to eat. I rarely eat fish or red meat. I don't advocate for the consumption of raw fish, like poke, oysters, squid, or sea urchin like uni/kina, as it tends to make people unwell. Personally, I avoid ingesting raw meat, fish, or sea creatures myself because of parasites and intestinal worms. 😬
You'll discover way more cuisine from Polynesia and Asia once you get here! I suggest trying hole in the walls or food trucks for the most enjoyable meals, they’re often more affordable than upscale establishments and a great way to support locals.
I hope this helps. Please be kind to the land and wildlife, good luck on your trip!<3 :)

Beverage. How do you Beverage? Tea? coffee? choccy? juice? what kind? woter? do you add anything? temperature? Provide Details on your Beverage Consumption methods.
Used to be Huge into drinks but over time i sort of petered out on that front. I'm a room temp water from the tap kinda guy. Love minerals.
However even if I don't do fancy drinks anymore here's my drink opinions
Lemonade ; I don't like a lot of store brand lemonades anymore [too sweet] But! I do like making lemonade at home sometimes during the summer, from lemons I Didn't steal from the neighbors tree I Didn't steal them inswear. I don't add a lot of sugar and sometimes I add pepper as well! It's nice and refreshing esp with some ice in it.
Sodas; After big parties [new years for example] once we have them we tend to have a lot of leftover mixers and syrups/purees for alcoholic drinks so I just toss some into club soda or ginger ale and call it a day as well. Very fun! Other than that I'm really not into them big time, do like root beer though sometimes. And ginger ale by itself!
Milk; when I get sick I make some milk with turmeric and a little bit of sugar and pepper, it helps keep me pretty warm and tastes really good! Helps with the sickness too but being nice to drink is a plus when every other aryuvedic remedy is bitter as hell lol. I do like hot chocolate and it's probably the only thing I order from cafes if I order at all
coffees; I don't drink em. I'm a wuss, they're too bitter and caffeine doesn't work on me in the slightest lol. I do like coffee flavor in cakes and sweets though! It's just the bitterness that gets to me
Tea; I like tea, both chai and more English style tea though I don't have the second as often as I'd like. I like licorice and lemon tea :] not much to say because I love chai with a packet of biscuits and the feeling of having one in the morning is unparamount I swear.
Juices; I don't drink juice a lot anymore but I like orange juice with the pulp and apple juice a lot. Lychee is also very nice but it's so sweet. Mango also, guava is a lot milder which I can appreciate though. Every once in a while when I go to India cash and carry I get this lychee drink with little soaked basil seeds that have expanded. Sorta like a chia drink but slightly to the left! I love the textures
Typically I don't add anything to my drinks and have them warm [if they're hot drinks] to room temp. If it's a summer day i throw in ice, but that's about it. I live simply and happily..
I consume drinks by drinking them through my mouth, by the way. thank you very much .

got the whole collection of soda drinks, thinking of turning the cans into table lamps when I’m done drinking them all and cleaning them out. My thoughts on all of the flavors:  Tried the Jupiter one first because I was curious about the cucumber flavor. Sadly, I wasn’t too impressed. This flavor was not what I would had chosen for Jupiter at all. I would’ve picked green melon flavor with a tiny dash of rose syrup flavor to represent her. I think that would’ve been far more delicious and fit her personality.  2/10  Mercury’s pear flavor was surprisingly nice-tasting and tangy, while delicate at the same time. It really suits her, actually. 10/10 Sailor Moon-- this one was weird. Pomelo flavor, as in grapefruit flavor. I think the reason why they used it for Sailor Moon is because it’s used in traditional nonalcoholic celebration drinks across most if Asia. so it sorta makes sense that they’d want an traditional celebratory drink for Sailor moon as her can was the very first to get produced. The grapefruit isn’t that bad tasting at all, I just don’t think it suits Sailor moon is all.     I don’t think it suits her personality at all? This isn’t what I imagine in terms of flavor if you told me to design a drink that would represent Sailor Moon.  I would want something that tastes like a somewhat childish drink but still loved by both adults and kids alike. something like a strawberry and rose flavor. 6/10 Sailor Venus-- The mango flavor fits her so perfectly, it’s light and bubbly but with a hint of tartness. 10/10 Sailor Mars-- You know how I said Sailor Moon should’ve gotten Strawberry flavor? Sailor Mars gets it instead here. I honestly love the flavor. but I’m conflicted over whenever Sailor Mars should’ve gotten strawberry. I always pictured her as being more of a cherry flavor kind of gal. Because Cherries are often all over the place-- symbol of trying too hard to seem mature but still being an innocent girl under it all, while sometimes being very tart/sour as hell depending on the breed of cherry you’re eating. a mixture of sweet and tart cherry would’ve been so perfect in embodying Sailor mars.   Still, friggin’ love that strawberry flavor. 10/10 Sailor Uranus-- Pineapple juice flavor. oddly, like with Sailor Venus’s flavor this one fits her so well in terms of personality and flavor? pineapple flavor is just one of those tastes where it comes in tasting so good, but then here comes the powerful tang as the pineapple itself tries to break down your mouth with its’ special enzyme bromelain . delicious AF. 10/10 Sailor Neptune-- Kiwi flavor? REALLY??  like with the Jupiter one I was really not a fan of this one. and I don’t think it suits Neptune at all??   Instead, I think I would’ve gone for green grape flavor which was laced with a hint of green lime. like you taste the delicate flavor of green grapes at first (tastes a lot like the pear one but with a different subtle flavor profile) which is very different than the flavor of concord grapes (which you typically taste in most grape-flavored things). and then BLAM, there’s the sour tang of lime that reminds you of lemonade.   Too bad they didn’t go that route. 2/10 Sailor Saturn--Grapefruit flavor, very similar to Sailor Moon. but this time it makes sense more for her and actually suits Sailor Saturn very much. 7/10 Sailor Pluto-- Watermelon flavor. Finally got around to tasting this one.... and I have to say that while it tastes very great, it’s not all what I would’ve envisioned for Sailor Pluto. not to mention, her can color is a dark ruby brown color which also gives the impression that her flavor would be something other than watermelon.     If it was up to me I would’ve made her flavor cinnamon apples. Not only is Cinnamon her favorite flavor in most things canonically it also makes sense as her drink reflecting her personality. still the watermelon flavor is good so I can’t complain. 9/10 Sailor Chibi-Moon--Lychee flavor. Oddly enough, this suits her very much even though I’d given her the watermelon flavor here. Also very tasty as hell to me... so again can’t find anything to nitpick about with this one. 10/10

IM ALSO ON BUBBLE TEA QUEST 2K24!!!!!! WHATS YOUR FAVE SO FAR
WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME  D:
I started my bubble tea quest at the end of November last year and I’m still riding the high of a matcha smoothie with strawberry popping pearls. Unlike other bubble tea places in Sydney, the store near my work doesn’t have matcha smoothies as a standard item (it was a Christmas drink) and it makes me :(
Other recent fave was a mango crush with lychee jelly, which was a lovely refreshing drink for our summer
I think one of the tiger milk teas have a strong chance of being a fave, except when I tried a tiger before they were out of regular tapioca pearls, and the white sugar pearls I had instead was waaayyyyyy too sweet to go well with the brown sugar syrup. Will circle back to try a different tiger drink with the correct pearl type in a few weeks!
Otherwise I generally tend to prefer the fruity teas so far. Peach fruit tee with lychee popping pearls was very good.

hey!
remember when i said i was doing a Silly Drinks Journal for my new resolution? well, here's part 1 of 12!
Somehow, I scoured every store in town to find over fifty varied drinks to review. Specifically 52, with an average score of 6.4 and a median score of 7, y'nerds. Note that
I'm in the UK
only 4 of the drinks which were alcoholic, because while I am now a flavourslut, getting drunk is Not Worth The Cost imo
these were all bought by just walking around every store I could get to in town!
Here's the drinks plotted by date and score:
Tumblr media
Click below for the drinks. (Spoilers: I'm a little unfair on kvass.)
The worst drink, with a score of 1/10, was carbonated kvass. Look… I'm really sorry to Latvia. I really wanted to like it. On paper, rye juice is awesome. In practice, three sips was all I could tolerate before I physically couldn't drink more. I'm so sorry I can't appreciate you kvass :<
Thankfully on the next day I got one of the top-scoring drinks: botanical lemonade! It was crisp, lemony and tart. Also scoring 9/10 were:
'Tropical Orange' energy drink (Hough the taste of peach is lovely)
Local fruit farm apple & mango juice! It was a little thick, but a gorgeous combo. Literally just pressed fruit in a bottle! Local sure is best.
Vanilla milk. I mean. It's vanilla milk. Duh
I bought strawberry milk too, but sadly (2/10) had to get rid of it because it was sickly. Speaking of… I bought a 4-pack of CBD drinks. One, raspberry and guava, managed to peak to 6/10, but the rest were brought down by this horrid metallic tang, with glowing reviews like "Ugh. What? 3/10" and "I feel like I'm drinking the aluminium from the can. 2/10". Not very relaxing at all, itseems.
Some 8/10 drinks included:
two energy drinks – Cherry and Mango Loco. I really wish these were in energy-less form, they are too dang tasty.
Cream soda! It tastes just like ice cream (and goes well with it too.)
A drink flavoured like the classic Fruit Salad sweets… raspberry and pineapple is a nice contrast!
A gorgeous Łowidz Truskawka (strawberry syrup). A little sweet because, but a pretty classic taste in a very lovely thin bottle!
Rounding off the list with curious (but sadly mid) drinks:
Tomato juice! A solid 4/10. I wrote that it "tastes like I'm in the wrong context" (i.e. cooking passata).
Nestle and rosehip kombucha: my partner described it as tasting like a "petting zoo". Curious, but very… earthy. Surprisingly still a 4/10 (sorry kvass)
Lychee-flavoured drink with Nata de Coco: I really, really, really love lychee, but for some reason it didn't really vibe 100%. The tiny gel cubes of coconut milk gives it a bubble tea-like quality, which stopped me drinking too fast and helped me savour the flavour. And, eh, maybe I was harsh but I think bubble tea and lychee are like ice cream and chocolate to me: beautiful flavours that sadly don't really go well together. 7/10
Pomegranate juice! "It's like cranberry but it tastes of purple. Not bad!" I have no idea what I meant by this, but I stand by it nevertheless. 7/10
Ginger shots and (nonalcoholic) ginger beer! Keh… it's like fire in my throat… Both got 4/10.
I'm pretty sure I've bought every interesting-looking drink I could in town! Thankfully of course there is a wide variety of sites online, and when I pass by cities I can just Buy A Shit Ton of Drinks. Especially from the asian supermarkets! There are none in this town, which is a huge shame.
As it turns out, variety is the spice of life, and while some of these drinks were horrendous, most of them were really rather gorgeous, and it was lovely to get to try them all out. Also I'm really sorry to kvass again. I wish I could drink you, kvass. Will you forgive me?
See you in February!

This growth trajectory is underpinned by a remarkable Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.49% projected from 2023 to 2030, signifying sustained and robust expansion.
Bubble tea, also known as boba tea or pearl milk tea, is a popular beverage that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and has since gained global popularity. It is characterized by its unique combination of tea (usually black or green tea), milk (or non-dairy alternatives), sweeteners (typically sugar or syrup), and chewy tapioca pearls or other toppings like fruit jellies. The drink is often served cold and shaken to create a frothy, refreshing texture.
Market Overview:
The bubble tea market has experienced significant growth over the past few decades and has evolved to cater to diverse tastes and preferences. Several key factors have contributed to the market's success:

Here are some of the major challenges and risks associated with the bubble tea market:
Health Concerns: One of the most significant challenges for the bubble tea market is the growing awareness of health concerns related to excessive sugar consumption. Many bubble tea drinks contain high levels of sugar, which can contribute to health problems such as obesity and diabetes. This has led to increased demand for healthier options and sugar reduction, posing a challenge for traditional bubble tea recipes.
Regulatory Compliance: As health concerns rise, there is increasing scrutiny and regulation of food and beverage products, including bubble tea. Compliance with health and safety standards, labeling requirements, and nutritional information disclosure can be a complex and costly process for businesses in the industry.
Supply Chain Disruptions: The bubble tea market relies on a global supply chain for ingredients such as tapioca pearls, tea leaves, and fruit flavors. Disruptions in the supply chain, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, can lead to shortages and increased costs, affecting businesses' ability to meet customer demand.
Competition: The bubble tea market is highly competitive, with numerous established chains and independent shops vying for market share. Sustaining profitability and growth in this competitive environment requires businesses to continually innovate and differentiate themselves.
Ingredient Sourcing and Quality Control: Maintaining consistent quality of ingredients, particularly tapioca pearls, is crucial for the bubble tea industry. Ensuring the availability of high-quality ingredients while managing costs and supply chain logistics can be challenging.

Welcome back to TRYOUT TUESDAY!!!
Today's drink was a mango juice drink with chewy bits in it. The drink didn't say what the chewy bits were so I assumed they'd be lychee or something until I noticed there was a gelling agent listed in the ingredients. It also advertised 25% mango juice and then listed mango flavouring in the ingredients so I was a bit confused.
Turns out the chewy bits are mango flavoured! It tastes like canned mangoes with the juice being the syrup (yes it's that sweet). The chewy bits don't feel like mango though so it's hard for me to like it because it's different. It's also hard to like because it tastes like I'm drinking canning syrup.
Anyways I could only do this because I'm out of my sensory hell so allow me to celebrate for a moment.
*happy dance stim*
Anyways I'm going to go drive for a bit before going home.

Redefining Refreshment: Malaysian Beverage Exports Beyond the Ordinary
Introduction
Malaysia, a country renowned for its diverse culinary heritage and tropical abundance, has been making waves in the global beverage industry. Beyond its delectable cuisine, Malaysia is gaining recognition for its unique and refreshing beverage exports. In this blog, we'll explore how Malaysian beverage exports are redefining refreshment, offering consumers around the world a taste of the extraordinary.
Malaysia's Rich Beverage Traditions
Malaysia's multicultural society has contributed to a rich tapestry of flavors and traditions, many of which are reflected in its beverages. Here are some of the distinctive Malaysian beverages that have transcended borders:
Teh Tarik: This iconic Malaysian drink, which translates to "pulled tea," is made by vigorously pouring hot, sweetened tea between two containers, creating a frothy top. The result is a creamy and aromatic tea, enjoyed by Malaysians and tea enthusiasts worldwide.
Kopi: Malaysian coffee, or kopi, is a fragrant brew that's a must-try for coffee lovers. Variations include kopi-o (black coffee), kopi susu (coffee with condensed milk), and kopi peng (iced coffee). Malaysian coffee is known for its strong, bold flavor.
Cendol: Cendol is a beloved dessert and beverage in Malaysia. It consists of green rice flour jelly, coconut milk, palm sugar, and shaved ice. Cendol drinks, both traditional and innovative, have gained popularity beyond Malaysia for their unique texture and sweetness.
Bandung: A popular pink drink in Malaysia, bandung is made by mixing rose syrup with condensed milk and water. It's a sweet and fragrant beverage with a beautiful hue.
Tropical Fruit Juices: Malaysia's tropical climate yields an abundance of fruits like mangoes, lychees, and guavas. These fruits are used to create refreshing and natural fruit juices that are enjoyed globally.
Malaysian Beverage Exports: Going Global
Malaysian beverage exports have expanded their reach beyond the country's borders. These exports are offering consumers worldwide a taste of Malaysia's unique and diverse beverage culture:
Instant Coffee and Tea: Malaysian coffee and tea are available in instant forms, making it convenient for people to enjoy the authentic flavors of Malaysia at home or on the go. Malaysian coffee brands are gaining recognition for their quality and taste.
Canned and Bottled Beverages: Ready-to-drink versions of Malaysian favorites like teh tarik and cendol are now available in cans and bottles. These beverages capture the essence of traditional recipes while ensuring convenience and portability.
Fruit Juices and Nectars: Malaysia's tropical fruits are the stars of many export-worthy fruit juices and nectars. These beverages are celebrated for their natural sweetness and health benefits.
Innovative Fusion Drinks: Malaysian entrepreneurs and mixologists are concocting fusion beverages that blend traditional Malaysian flavors with global trends. Examples include coconut coffee, pandan-infused drinks, and exotic fruit-flavored teas.
Health and Wellness Drinks: As health-conscious consumers seek functional beverages, Malaysian exports like herbal teas, turmeric-infused drinks, and probiotic beverages are gaining traction for their potential health benefits.
Conclusion
Malaysian beverage exports are redefining refreshment by offering a delightful departure from the ordinary. From the comforting warmth of teh tarik to the sweet indulgence of cendol and the bold flavors of kopi, these beverages reflect the rich tapestry of Malaysian culture. As Malaysian entrepreneurs and brands continue to innovate and adapt to global tastes, we can expect even more extraordinary beverages from this tropical paradise. Whether you're sipping a Malaysian classic or trying an inventive fusion creation, Malaysian beverages are a testament to the country's commitment to delivering exceptional refreshment to the world.

if you’re still taking avatar prompts i’d love katara and zuko realizing that they both hooked up with jet— like whatever that convo looked like. maybe w katara trying really hard to be a Good Ally afterwards lol
I’m actually so sorry this took so long
it took me a while to figure out the scenario and everything else, so I kept putting it off, but it’s here now! I really really love Katara and Zuko’s friendship, and it was really fun to put that at the center here
ok so here’s Katara and Zuko (and of course the rest of the gaang lol) figuring out they both hooked up with Jet 1.2k words
They are all walking back from the Ember Island theater, each morose for a different reason, when Sokka, as is to be expected, speaks up.
“I want maple-suckle ice,” he says loudly.
Zuko gives him a questioning glance, waiting for an explanation.
“Back home,” Katara begins instead, and Zuko turns to watch her speak, “we have this treat that’s basically shaved ice covered in the sap of a maple-suckle bush. Gran Gran used to make it to cheer us up.”
Zuko considers this while the group continues trudging silently back home.
“Um, we have shaved ice on Ember Island, too,” he finally suggests, and before he can even finish, Sokka has grabbed him by the shoulder.
“Take us, now, please,” he says urgently.
They arrive at the cart only another mile away from the Fire Lord’s house, and Zuko tries to explain the different flavors and toppings to his friends. Aang gratefully chooses a mess of ice and mango syrup and various chopped up fruits, Sokka and Toph tuck into a mix of matcha-flavored toppings, and Suki favors lychee and black sesame in her choices. Katara, eager and amenable as always, asks Zuko what his favorites are and orders them for herself. The vendor piles the last of the red bean onto Katara’s ice, so there’s none left for Zuko’s.
“Oh, no, Zuko, you should have it,” she says apologetically, trying to swap her ice for his.
Zuko shrugs at her with a small smile and pushes away her hands. “I’ve had plenty before. You take it,” he insists.
Zuko vaguely finds it odd that Aang wrinkles his nose and looks away when he hears this, but he doesn’t say anything.
The group resumes their walk to the house, shaved ices in hand, significantly cheered. Sokka and Toph begin trading jokes at the front of the herd, Suki occasionally laughing at them, and even Aang starts to smile. Zuko falls back to walk in step with Katara a little behind the rest of the group. He clears his throat, and Katara looks up from her treat.
“So, I wanted to ask, because I tried with Sokka before, and he didn’t really know, and, uh, I know you’re a healer, and maybe you’d know, um, better. But,” he starts haltingly. He stops and grimaces, racking his vocabulary for the right words for this kind of conversation.
Katara waits for him patiently, her round eyes looking up at him devoid of any expectation.
He sighs and rolls his shoulders up and back, surrendering to the openness of her gaze. His voice is stronger, more decisive, when he asks, “Did Jet actually die?”
Katara’s eyes widen in surprise, but she composes herself quickly. “Yeah,” she says plainly. “He did.” She scoops another spoonful of her ice. “Why?” She pops it into her mouth.
“I actually knew him?” Zuko says slowly.
Katara chokes on the ice. “What? How?” she demands between coughs.
Zuko hesitates before patting her back to help with the coughing. Once she’s stopped, he takes a deep breath, and then lets it out. “Uh—well. I kind of had a thing with him.”
Katara’s watery eyes are urgent as they scan his face. “Define ‘a thing,’” she says.
Zuko rubs the back of his neck, clearly uncomfortable. “I guess we used to hook up?”
Katara gasps and covers her mouth with her free hand before she groans and her head falls.
“It was only a couple of times,” Zuko defends himself, his voice higher pitched and scratchy.
There’s a loud laugh from Toph at the front of the group, who has been clearly eavesdropping on their conversation. “Oh, this is too good!” she crows. “Jet got Sparky, too!”
“What?” Sokka demands, removing his arm from around Suki’s shoulders to peer back at Zuko and Katara. “What’s going on?”
Toph gestures in the general direction of Zuko and Katara, who are both standing rooted to the ground, blushing furiously as they keep accidentally making eye contact and then turning fiercely to look literally anywhere else.
“Zuko and Katara are spit sisters,” Toph practically yells. She laughs loudly, her face upturned and her mouth wide.
Sokka smacks himself in the forehead, clearly pained. “Am I the only one who didn’t make out with Jet?” he cries. “What is it with this guy?”
Even Aang can’t help giggling in response.
“Why didn’t you say anything before?” Sokka asks Zuko, the corner of his mouth rising into the beginnings of an amused smile.
“I didn’t know you knew him,” Zuko says.
“Not just about Jet specifically,” Sokka clarifies. “I thought you liked girls.” He winces and rubs his arm when Suki elbows him sharply.
“I was kind of worried about the war we’re trying to end,” Zuko says with a wave of his hand, clearly exhausted. “And it’s illegal in the Fire Nation. And from what I gather, still pretty taboo around the rest of the world. I didn’t know how you were going to react.”
Aang nods thoughtfully. “The monks always told us that love was love, no matter who shared it,” he says. “But they also reminded us that a lot of the rest of the world didn’t feel the same way.”
Zuko sighs. “That’s an understatement,” he says. Then, as an afterthought, “And it wasn’t really love.”
He stops when he notices Katara scooping red bean off of her shaved ice and placing it carefully on Zuko’s. He watches her for a moment before she catches on and looks up at him with wide eyes.
“What are you doing?” he asks, bewildered.
“You let me take all the red bean,” she says in an attempt at an explanation. “But you deserve it.”
Zuko groans loudly. “I knew you guys would treat me differently if you found out,” he says, raising his arm in exasperation.
“No worries, here, Zuko,” Sokka says, pointing to his chest with his thumb.  “I’ll always think of you as my favorite jerkbender.”
“Yeah,” Aang agrees brightly. “I think it’s great you like guys!”
Zuko rolls his eyes. “Well, that’s a relief—Katara, stop giving me back all of the red bean!”
Katara pulls her hand back quickly. “Sorry,” she says sheepishly.
Suki stifles a laugh behind her hand before addressing the group.
“Maybe we should continue this conversation back home,” she says, then notices the panic on Zuko’s face. “Or just go home and not talk about it anymore.”
Toph keeps laughing as they resume walking toward the beach house, while Sokka, to the amusement of both Suki and Aang, grumbles something about Jet’s stature, and how he’s not even that hot.
Katara falls back to walk in step with Zuko. He suppresses another groan.
“You know,” she begins quietly, and he turns to watch her speak, “if you ever do want to talk about him—Jet, I mean—or anyone else.” Her eyes land on Sokka after he has another outburst ahead of them, and she shakes her head affectionately at him. She addresses Zuko once more and smiles lightly. “I’m always here.”
Zuko looks away, but he finds himself smiling, too, as his face tips down toward the ground.
“Yeah,” he finally says, “maybe.”

(1) please excuse this boba rant but there’s this boba place in my town that opened up last summer and their tea is really good but the actual tapioca is so inconsistent? sometimes it’s just the right amount of chewy and other times it feels like i’m eating a rock so i switched to getting lychee jelly all the time instead and it’s way better than having to guess whether the boba will be good or not but then sometimes they don’t strain the lychee syrup so i have to ask for like 0% sweet in my tea
(2) but then some of the drinks they can only do like an 80% sweetness? for summer they have this strawberry peach tea and it’s so good but it’s one of the drinks they can only do 80% sweet on so combined with the lychee jelly it is SO SWEET and i can’t stand when drinks are too sweet but it does have a nice taste. my favorite boba place is 1 hour and 20 minutes from my house by public transport but around 20 minutes if i drive which sucks because i hate driving on the freeway
(3) but their boba is so good? another thing i noticed is that almost everywhere i go if i ask for red bean the red beans is so hard. i know it’s probably not possible to make it the really smooth paste for drinks but it’s so off putting especially with the bean skin that i rarely even get it anymore :/ i think my favorite drink of all time though is a mango yakult drink the yakult really brings a nice tang to the sweetness from the mango and it’s just a great combination
I’M SUPER HERE FOR THIS!!!!! look, i am an adamant believer in keeping this blog drama free so the only tea i’m interested in is BUBBLE TEA. actually when it comes to mine i never get any other toppings other than pearls or aloe vera... hmmm i’m always afraid others won’t taste good haha. omg 80% sweetness? like they can’t go lower? i always get 50% and i’m used to it now, but i read that 100% is like normal sugar level and anything below that is reduced. but 100% just seems so much!! i had a friend who used to get 200%. i didnt even know that existed till i took her order one day lool.
YEAH hard red beans are just terrible!! here we have some traditional desserts that use those kind of red beans and they always make sure to cook it down really smooth and soft. it’s a staple in chinese desserts. i think maybe they are trying to replicate the chewiness of pearls with the red beans perhaps?
tbh the yakult in bubble tea thing has been around here for years, but i’ve never once tried it LOL. i know some people who really love it but i’m just afraid the taste of yakult might be too strong. together with the fact that i am slightly lactose intolerant and yakult aids the digestive system... it might be an explosive affair. but i might try it next time, i actually really do love yakult. the orange flavour is my fave. imagine my surprise when i was in the UK and i realised THEY ONLY HAVE THE ORIGINAL FLAVOUR. omg. here in asia we have all four flavours so readily available that i hadn't even thought that this might not be the case elsewhere!!!!!! have you tried the other flavours?

Exercise - none (rest day)
Wasn't planning on a rest day, but other activities for in the way during my usual workout time, and anyway I probably needed to take a day off.
Tomorrow will also be a rest day (ya girl finally getting her second vax 🤠), and possibly the day after as well (depending on how I go with my exam work/revision).
I'm glad I'm finally getting back into regular exercise. It's been months of sporadic workouts and mostly rest days, so I have lost a bit of the muscle tone I'd built up over the last year, but I'm not fully back to square one. My muscles are still stronger than they were at the beginning, I can still walk at double the speed and incline than I could when I first bought the treadmill. I haven't lost all the gains, and I've been maintaining my weight pretty well.
Despite the long break, I count all that as progress. :)
