One of my players in the futuristic fantasy game I run invented a fair called the Festival of Light. It was a throwaway line to accomplish a gift that has since spiraled into at least 30+ hours of prep, 160 images for items they can buy, gifts they’re getting, and a set of magical Spotify playlists based on stat enhancement. Prepping for some Dolmenwood Outlawry
First I wanted to run the Wake of Willowby Hall and maybe set it in Dolmenwood. Well, as long as we’re playing in Dolmenwood, might as well start with the Winter’s Daughter. Then one of my friends, Aaron, a huge elf supporter, read up on some Dolmenwood history in the Players’ Book and had strong opinions about the Cold Prince.

there's a post in the tag about someone wishing to see more Omar in D20 and I agree, but it also reminded me about how a year ago a few RPG streamers I like started Power Play, and I never ended up watching it, and I just recently learned that Omar was in that and I could have seen what an awesome player he was long ago if I just had watched it
and then I got to thinking about how many cool actual plays are out there that don't have the budget that Dimension 20 or Critical Role have, but tell really cool stories with really good players regardless! And a lot of these players deserve recognition, but there's so little space to showcase new players for audiences who only watch D20 or CR
so anyway I compiled a list of every single actual play Omar has been in (at least, those I could find VODs for)
Power Play: actual play of Icons, a silver-age inspired superheroes rpg, hosted by QueueTimes! It's played remotely, about 59 episodes long, and includes several one-shots where (I think?) they play some other game systems as well
The Borros Saga: Banesbreak: actual play of Dungeons and Dragons, hosted by PixelCircus! Played in person, about 12 episodes long, with some one-shot vignettes. Aabria is also a player here!
Monsters and Fables: actual play of Dungeons and Dragons, hosted by the official D&D channel! Played in person, 6 episodes long
Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG: actual play of Dungeons and Dragons, hosted by Hyper RPG! Played in person, about 9 episodes long, and half the time Omar is DMing!
Balboa Cantrip Academy: actual play of Kids on Brooms, a rules-lite magical school rpg, hosted by Hyper RPG! Played remotely, and only 3 episodes long (Episode 2, Episode 3, on Twitch)
Pugmire: Homeword Bound: actual play of Pugmire, a simplified D20 with dogs, hosted by Saving Throw! Played in-person, only 3 episodes long
The Last VHS Store: a 3-episode series hosted by Saving Throw, where Omar GMs a lite D20 system he designed himself! All in-person
Carrier Penguins: a series of 4 one-shots hosted by Saving Throw, playing Lasers and Feelings, an easily hackable lite system. Ep1, Ep2, Ep3, Ep4, all in-person

#omar najam#dimension 20#acofaf#phew this took........ a lot of work...#i wish there was a system already in place to see which players have been in which games#but unless the actors list their actual play work all on their portfolio website there really isnt a system#i compiled this partially to be like 'hey you want more omar?? you DONT need to rely on D20 for that!'#even tho I agree the production quality of D20 is so high that those actual plays can be more fun to watch than the smaller groups#and partially to be like 'hey look at these other game streaming groups that have good work they're putting out you should watch!'#and partially literally also to be like '...YO look at all these other games that exist???'#im still loling at acofaf using the D&D system at all. it does NOTHING for this setting except be familiar to their audience#Saving Throw uses Lasers and Feelings a LOT because its such a light bulk-less system you can do ANYTHING on top of#with virtually zero prep#acofaf needed an oracle system more than a combat system - which is what D&D is#and the oracle system in D&D is helpful but theres SO much bulk with the combat mechanics for a production that doesnt need it!#anyway if you like horror Omar GMs a game of Dread and I don't like horror but I still Need to see that

Gatewalkers book one concluded!!! The last thing we have done here before switching gears to Kingmaker for a few months is open up a package some alien kids snuck into Kasander's backpack, which contains:
cookies for the road
little kid drawings of us hanging out with the kids :)
a chunk of adamantine labeled "powerful protective golem" named Reggie
a book the kids assembled listing Reggie superpowers and backstory theories. it is important to note that one of the Reggie superpowers is interplanetary travel in case we get lost
I am going to miss the alien kids
#I think that as a GM kids are a serious point of weakness so I'm always really impressed by how my friend does them#it's been a great time passing the campaign baton for Gatewalkers but I'm excited to be back in the driver's seat#hoping I can bring a more polished experience to Kingmaker than last time we played it- really the running theme of recent campaigns lol#we'll be on hiatus until June though since a lot of folks are traveling during May. lot of prep time before resuming at least!!!#trying to talk people into letting me run murder in baldur's gate in the meantime though I Need to see this thing at a table#rambling

successfully gmed my first one-shot/session ever and am filled with unfathomable hubris.
#i got some great feedback and can't wait to do this again#having two players (one experienced in person and one newbie virtual) was interesting and i am anxious about sessions with more players ngl#but! i did the improve thing! it was hard and there's so much prep that will be set aside for next time! but it was fun! and i did it!#source: teddybearsandlightningstorms#using the pre-made module#which wasn't a whole lot#was helpful and i am glad no one else i know gms this system

I Need DnD Help!
I gave my players aa Sending Stone, so they an use the Sending Spell once per day.
My BBEG also showed up recently to taunt one of them, try to get in their head. NOW THEY'RE PLANNING TO START PRANK CALLING HIM!
How do I even deal with this?! How do I maintain an illusion of dignity and malevolence when the Paladin is calling the Plague of Eyes like, "Hello, this is the Plague of Noses! *Sneezes 18 times*"
I need ideas!

Buying a Dropout TV subscription was the best impulsive thing I've done lately! :'D
I caught up with the ongoing Neverafter campaign and I like it a lot, but I have to say it's the Court of Fey and Flowers that stole my heart. It's a gleeful squee inducing entertainment and I've been completely hooked since episode 1. I'm on episode 3 rn and the fact there is "only" 7 episodes left fills me with deep regret. XDD
#dimension 20#aabria is the GM for that one and she's great!#all the players inhabit their characters so vividly and I can't get enough#it reminds me a bit of the CR calamity series#as in there is a noticeable amount of prep before each episode from the players (like writing letters)#i love that aspect of it#i always pass on the dnd games set in a more social setting because i can't get into it#so i don't say this lightly that it's the best thing I've watched lately#i can't wait to play the next episode this evening

All right if you didn't know I'm #1 DnD hater supreme, this is me saying it, I think DnD is a terrible system (in general but especially for roleplay) and dominates FAR too much of the ttrpg scene when there's so many excellent and interesting games out there (ask me if you're interested I HAVE RECS) and please. Don't act a fool on other people's posts where I can see it
#no one is stopping anyone. you can play your needlessly complicated system all you want#I'm just saying. maybe try other things if you're more into the roleplay part#you can always go back if you really feel like it#but variety is literally always useful and might make you think harder about how you want to do things#anyway please play Blades in the Dark I'm fucking begging#I'm in John Harper's camp they're such a good game designer and BITD has SUCH GOOD FLOW#AND CAN BE SO LOW PREP ON THE GM SIDE IF YOU'RE NOT BEING CRAZY ABOUT PLOT#which is never the case for me#but if i had to then also prep stat sheets for every single thing my players might encounter. I'd simply perish#it allows for freedom of planning and movement for players and GM alike and i WILL shill for it given half a chance#also so many games are built on it. SO MANY#pick your flavor and you can probably find one#I'm running one that's about historical court intrigue and IN one that's cyberfuture grime. there's truly a bitd for every occasion#anyway. fuck wotc they're the fucking worst

biggest challenge so far: trying to give my players the same amounts/level of story moments/roleplay possibilities
#livvy learns about gm'ing#livvy's session prep#the guy who's usually our gm has the most experience (he's been playing & gm'ing for YEARS)#so i feels like it comes more natural to him to play and be active#so as gm it entices me to engage with that energy#but making the others feel seen and important too is also VITAL
