KYRIE: Want to know your future? TAYUIN: Is it starving to death in the frozen tundra because I accidentally picked the most useless partner? KYRIE: Shut up. Give me your hand. TAYUIN: Hey! KYRIE: Mm, yeah, all doom and gloom. You end up alone with fifteen snoufleurs. TAYUIN: You’re awful and I hate everything about you. KYRIE: laughs Relax. It’s not all bad. TAYUIN: …What do you see, then? KYRIE: Which part do you want to know? TAYUIN: I don’t know… Do I win? KYRIE: It doesn’t work like that. TAYUIN: Well, how does it work then! KYRIE: Stop moving. I see two paths. One paved in grey, and the other, red. Both paths are dark. One damp— uncomfortable— like the first thaw of spring, when all the world is laden with melted frost. The other path is bitter cold; lined with ice and filled with echoes. So much pain… TAYUIN: Let go! KYRIE: Tay— TAYUIN: If you’re just going to tell me awful things, I’d rather not hear them. I was happier with the snoufleurs. KYRIE: Not all pain is bad. Some challenges are hard, but they help us grow. TAYUIN: Yeah, well maybe it’s not worth it. There’s a point where enough is enough. KYRIE: Then why do you do the things you do? TAYUIN: It doesn’t hurt me. It hurts other people. KYRIE: You want to hurt them? TAYUIN I have to do it. KYRIE: You have to treat others as disposable? As tools?   TAYUIN: Better them than… than me, again. KYRIE: There are better ways to cope, Tayuin. TAYUIN: This is the one that works for me.

On July 16th 1882 thirty-one Shetland "sixerns", with a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm. The event is still remembered as "The Bad Day".
This post covers three Shetland fishing tragedies over a 68 year period, it ended the centuries old tradition of Haff fishing in small six manned bots in the open waters of the North Atlantic around Shetland. Two of these tragedies happened in July, the third in December, however I have decided to post about the three in the one post.
There were between 300 and 500 sixareens or sixerns in Shetland. The Haaf fishing proved to be a hard life for these boats and they only tended to last 5 or 6 years. When they finished their lives as a fishing vessel some ended up being used as a flit boat for moving livestock, peats and other goods between islands or from ship to shore. The sixareens may eventually have ended up as the roof of shed or outbuilding. Nothing was ever wasted in Shetland, especially if it was wooden!
The men would travel up between 20 and 40 miles offshore. As the men were dealing with a prevailing wind, they could usually only sail in one direction. They were always happier if they could row out with a relatively light boat and sail back with a heavy load of fish!
When they reached the fishing grounds, the fishermen would barely be in sight of the highest hills in Shetland. They would have sea all around them.
Haaf fishing was very dangerous due to the unpredictable nature of the weather far out at sea. However, when you look at the numbers of men that fished and the length of time that they fished for, the actual disasters are relatively few.
On 16th July 1832 31 Shetland “sixareens” and a total of 105 crewmen were lost in a storm. The event is still remembered as “The Bad Day”. A London Distress Fund was set up and raised the sum of £3000. The money was raised for the dependants of the crofter-fishermen lost. The crew of one boat in 1832, did manage a lucky escape from the storm as they were picked up by a passing American sloop. However, the Captain of the American vessel refused to alter his course to Philadelphia and so, despite passing close to Orkney, the survivors had to cross the Atlantic and endure a further six months away from home before returning.
During another storm on 20th July 1881, hurricane force winds caught the fishermen by surprise. The boats that tried to come home were mostly capsized or swamped, but those that stayed at their lines for the most part survived. In all ten boats foundered and 58 Haaf fishermen lost their lives. They left behind 34 widows and 85 orphans. Six of these boats and 36 of the men were from the fishing station at Gloup in North Yell. It was a tragic loss for a small community.
On the morning of 21st December 1900, boats from Firth, Mossbank and Toft set off for the winter haddock fishing. They were some 32 kilometres (20 miles) away, between the Horse of Burravpoe and  Snap, when they were caught in a sudden and severe gale from the north-west. Many were lost during the storm which came on in the space of five minutes. The fleet were scattered. One made it to Whalsay, Skerries and Lunning but the rest were lost.
22 men were drowned, leaving 15 widows (5 of whom were pregnant), and 51 children. Firth was hit the hardest. Many of the men were great fishermen and the disaster devastated the Delting fishing industry, which never recovered. The women continued to work the crofts. Children grew up and moved away, leading to a rapid decline in population.
The plight of the families left destitute led to a lot of publicity in local and national press. The Delting Disaster Fund was set up to help those affected and it was one of Queen Victoria’s last public acts to appeal for support.
These major fishing disasters signalled the beginning of the end for Haaf fishing. The herring fishery in the 1880s and the Crofter’s Act of 1886, which put an end to the truck system, were two more nails in its coffin.
Larger safer boats were introduced and undecked sixareens were replaced by fully decked smacks. Fishermen could finally install a few home comforts. However, when the steam trawler was introduced, longlining in large sailing boats couldn’t compete economically. Haaf fishing stopped quite quickly at this point.
There are few sixareens left in Shetland. There are a couple of replicas and bits and pieces lying around here and there. At the Shetland Museum and Archives there’s a replica sixareen called the Vaila Mae. She sails regularly in Lerwick Harbour and you can even get a trip on her during Shetland Boat Week!
One of the only surviving sixareens from the past can be seen in the Shetland Museum, see pic teo, . She was built as the Foula mail boat, which fished for a little while and then ended up as a flit boat for shifting peats. She didn’t spend much of her life as a fishing sixareen.
You can find memorials all over Shetland to those lost at sea.

Link Fanfic - The Beginning of Something
Part 8
Half an hour after their encounter in the library, Maari and Warriors managed to make it up to Zelda's old study. They encountered another small nest of spiders spinning webs along a corridor. Working together they dispatched them with relative ease. Maari was careful not to overstretch herself and rip her stitches. Wars checked on her a little too often but she didn't mind.
"No don't touch that!" The unmistakable sound of Sky's voice echoed down the chamber ahead of them.
Warriors and Maari hurried towards the door ahead of them, where the slumped body of a giant spider half blocked the doorway. Inside, Wild was crouched on the floor beside the spider, about to examine the green gloup spilling from the body. Behind him Sky looked like he was about to have a fit.
"Oh, good. Perhaps you can talk some sense into him Wars," Sky sighed.
"Into Wild? You're more likely to teach a moblin to sing an aria," Wars teased, carefully stepping over the legs and into the room. Grabbing the back of Wild's collar and dragging him away from the dead creature as he went.
"Are you both alright?" Maari asked, scanning the room for more carnage.
"We're fine. Walked into that thing trying to build a nest in here," Sky explained. "Wild seemed particularly offended and tried to shoot all of its eyes at once."
"Four out of eight wasn't bad!" Wild replied, pulling himself up off the ground and dusting off his tunic. "It knocked my aim off with one of its eight legs! Eight legs Sky!"
"Yes I did notice that Wild, you know, while I was trying to avoide being hit by them!"
"Alright stop bickering you two," Wars interrupted, moving to stand between them.
Maari started to move into the room but winced as she lifted her left leg high enough to climb over the spider. Wild's head jerked in her direction at the sound.
"You doing okay?" He asked, making a quick scan of her as she approached. "You're injured."
"Barely, just a cut. Captain stitched it up for me," she replied, waving Wild off.
"No big deal." Wars shrugged off his involvement, and Maari noticed his mask of indifference being pulled back on. "What is a big deal is this place is clearly not as empty as Purah thought it was. Those spiders had to have come from somewhere."
"Time often talks about skulltulas. They kind of reminded me of these spiders." Sky said, cleaning off the master sword with a scrap of fabric that had once been a curtain.
"True, they aren't from my Hyrule," Wild agreed. "They must have come through the dark portal."
"Do you think it could be here in the castle?" Maari asked.
"The portal?" Wars clafified. "Hmm, could be here I suppose. Though I'm sure the guards out on the ground would have seen more monster activity around the castle if the portal was here."
"I suppose so," Maari mused. She walked across the room towards the broken walkway that once lead to Zelda's study." Have you seen any sign of the research team?"
"None so far, you?" Wild replied.
"None that we could see. If they were here or in the library, perhaps the spiders got them before we arrived?" Warriors suggested.
Meanwhile, Maari was looking across the walkway at the open door of Zelda's study. She stared at it almost absentmindedly until something caught her attention. Something on the door puzzled her. It looked out of place and odd.
"Hey, do you think you could get me across that gap?" She asked the boys behind her.
They turned and looked in her direction.
"Over to the study?" Wild asked.
"You shouldn't overexert yourself," Wars insisted. "One of us can go if you think there could be a clue over there."
It was decided, much to Maari's annoyance, that Sky would jump the gap. Wars and Wild linked their hands together and crouched down, giving Sky a spring board to jump from. He gave himself half the bedroom as a run-up then planted his foot in the boys hands and they launched him across the gap. Sky landed with a wobble, and for a heart stopping moment the others thought he might fall. But he managed to keep his feet.
"I'm good!" He called back to reassure them.
"I saw something on the door, go check what it is," Maari instructed him.
Sky wandered across what was left of the walkway towards the tower at the other end. He reached for the doorknob and pulled the door closed so that the others could see it from where they stood. As the object of Maari's curiosity came into view.
"Looks like someone painted something on the door. Looks like a funny symbol. Does it mean anything to you guys?"
As sky closed the door Maari and Wild's eyes went wide. An old anger flared in Wild's heart, while Maari's stomach lurched. In streaks of red paint, an upside down Sheikah eye had been scrawled across the door.
"It looks like your Sheikah symbol," Warriors said quietly, but he stopped talking when he noticed Maari's stern expression.
"It's not Sheikah. It's an abomination." Maari uttered through gritted teeth.
"What's she talking about Wild?" Wars asked.
"It's the symbol of the Yiga, traitors to the crown and Hyrule. They were founded by Sheikah who turned to a path of darkness. They worship Ganon like a God."
"I'll bet they had something to do with the disappearance of the research team," Maari almost spat. "Come on, let's get out of here. There's nothing else for us to find here." Maari turned and walked back towards the door. Leaving the boys exchanging uncertain glances, and Sky on the wrong side of the bridge.
After some difficulty retrieving their Skyloftian, the group made their way back to the rope ladders and down to terra firma. Time was there to meet them when they returned.
"Everything okay? You were up there a lot longer than I thought. It's nearly sunset," he said as Maari took the last step off the ladder.
"We ran into some trouble," Warriors replied, taking off his hat to scratch his head.
"What kind of trouble?" Time crossed his arms and looked concernedly at the others.
"Some kind of giant spiders," Sky replied, stretching his arms as if to demonstrate.
"Any injuries?" Time asked, beginning to give cursory examinations of his team.
"Just me I think," Maari said weakly, raising a hand. "I got cut on some broken glass. It's not bad but I could use a healer."
"Sky why don't you take Maari to find Hyrule. You two can fill me in on what happened up there," Time insisted, turning his attention to Wild and Wars.
Sky obeyed and started walking in the direction of the guard chambers. However, Maari stayed where she was.
"We didn't find the research crew, but we did find a clue as to where they might have gone," she said, trying to keep her anger out of her voice.
"What d'you mean? What clue?"
"The Yiga clan have been here. It's likely they kidnapped the researchers." Maari took a deep breath and managed to look Time in his good eye. "It's not the news the Sargent wanted, but it gives them somewhere to look. You should probably also warn them about the spiders. In total I think we killed ten of them but there could be more hiding in the passageways of the castle. They should be warned if they're going to continue sending people up there."
Maari gave Time a small nod in place of a bow and walked off to follow Sky. The others watched them walk away and Maari could still hear them as they spoke in hushed voices.
"What was that about?" Time asked.
"Not sure, but she didn't react well when she saw the Yiga symbol. I know how it made me feel, I can only imagine how a Sheikah would feel about the Yiga," Wild tried to explain.
***
Maari sat on a plain wooden bed with Hyrule, in one of the old guards quarters. Once again she had taken off the top half of her outfit to let Hyrule work his magic on her wound. She stared at a spot on the wall, mostly ignoring the poor boy as he worked.
"I'm almost done. Did you finish that potion I gave you?" Hyrule asked, pink stars of magic swirling from his hands around Maari's cut.
"Yes, I drank it all. Tastes like wildberry juice. But it's got a bit of a sour aftertaste."
"Yeah, it's supposed to heal, not really taste good. Sorry."
"Don't be. I'm just sorry to be a bother," Maari sighed.
"It's no bother, really. I heal the guys all the time. Trust me they've had worst scrapes than yours. You shouldn't feel bad about it," Hyrule assured her as he finished up.
"But I was the only one who got hurt," Maari blurted out.
"What does that have to do with anything?" Hyrule asked, pulling away and frowning at her.
"Well, it's my first time away from Kakariko on an important mission. What if I had been hurt worse, or died?! What good would I have been to my clan then?" Maari exclaimed, shrinking back onto the bed and pulling her knees up to her chest.
Hyrule sat and thought in silence for a moment before looking back at Maari with a kind smile.
"Listen Maari, I don't know much about the Sheikah or this Hyrule for that matter. But what I do know is people. I saw the way you took down those bokoblins that attacked us on the road and I'll bet you weren't cowering or hiding when you got that injury. I can tell you're a fighter and any sign of weakness seems like a failure to you. But just by being in the fight, that already makes you a hero."
"You guys are the heros around here. I'm not really anybody important," Maari sniffed, fighting back tears that threatened to spill over.
"There's no such thing as someone who isn't important. Paya and Impa trusted you with an important mission. Surely you're important to them."
At last Maari caught Hyrule's gaze. His eyes were bright and friendly and Maari couldn't help but feel comorforted by his presence. Maybe it was just the effects of the healing potion, but Maari felt a warm glow inside. Of course all the things the boy said were true. But in her shame and anger she had forgotten the truth of her nature. She was a warrior. Warriors got hurt but it was their ability to pick themselves up and keep fighting that defined them.
Maari looked down at her torso where the wound had been. Now only a thin white line marked where the glass had cut her skin, and even the marks from Warrior's stitches had been erased.
"Thank you Link. For this and for your council," she bowed her head to him and he reciprocated.
"You are most welcome. You gonna come have supper with us?" He asked, his smile broadening.
"Maybe in a minute. I think I'll tidy myself up first."
Satisfied with his patient, Hyrule picked up his things and left Maari alone in the room. She laid herself down on the bed for a moment and closed her eyes. It wasn't comfortable, a bed designed for a soldier to sleep on in shifts. But at least it was quiet.
She thought for a while about what Hyrule had said, and remembered her true reason for following the heroes across Hyrule in the first place. Her father and brother were out there somewhere looking for her mother. Her mother had disappeared investigating the Yiga. Now she had found their symbol in Hyrule castle. Something tugged at her, like a thread attached to a much larger spiders web. The heroes arriving in Hyrule, monsters returning to the regions, people going missing and now the Yiga. Something was happening and Maari resolved to figure out what.
Once fully dressed again Maari calmed her nerves and left the room. Outside the dorm room, Maari almost collided with a blur of blue and green.
"Woah! Sorry!" Wars fumbled, as he backed up against the wall to get out of Maari's way.
"No, no I wasn't watching where I was going. Oh its you Captain," Maari smiled as their eyes met.
"Maari, how's your wound?"
"All healed thanks to Hyrule, but he attested that without your stitches it would have taken longer to heal."
"Huh, well I'm not usually the type to say I told you so, but..." Wars stretched the last syllable, while Maari rolled her eyes. She gave Wars a playful punch to his chest.
"Okay, you were right. And I should thank you, for your nursing skills as well as saving my life with those spiders."
"Oh, you're welcome." Wars nodded and gave Maari a greatful smile. He wanted to say more but couldn't think of the words.
"Where were you going? Before you walked into me that is?" Maari asked with a little chuckle.
"Actually I was coming to see if you were ready to come eat yet."
"Well then why don't we walk back together?" Maari suggested.
Turning back the way he had come Wars lead Maari in the direction of the old soldiers dining hall. As they walked side by side, Maari's fingers brushed against Wars' hand. They touched again and a blush rose in her cheeks. Before she could pull away Wars entangled his fingers with hers for the briefest moment, then all too quickly he stuffed his hands in his pockets as they emerged into the dining hall and were greated by the rest of the group.
