So, what is an intrusive crossover?

The thing is I had a post about this way, way back, like... probably somewhere in the 2014-2016 era? My Marvel-and-Naruto period.

But I cannot find it.

Anyway.

I divide crossovers into categories or types, and here the most basic ones.

Intrusive: A character from one setting ends up in another, completely unrelated setting. They do not share a universe, do not share a planet, nada. This is 'falls through a portal' type of crossover. EXAMPLE: A Witch's Favor, where Wanda Maximoff and Maria Rambeau (Marvel) end up in the Star Wars universe due to an unexplained spell malfunction.

Shared Verse: The settings could theoretically, in some manner, exist in the same universe without ever intersecting. EXAMPLE: I usually use Naruto for this example, e.g. the Hidden Continent exists in the Pacific but has had minimal influence/interaction with the rest of the setting up to this point because it's magically cut off from the rest of the planet. For Star Wars, this is usually pretty easy by just putting whatever the second canon is as just. A planet in Wild Space. They exist in the same universe! They just haven't found each other yet! A great example is the fic A Star to Steer By, by @norcumii and @dogmatix. A subset of this is fics where one is the distant past of the other, like Muse on This or Red-Eyed Black Widow.

Mixed Verse: The setting is one that involves both canons influencing each other to a degree, or being in the same verse without being a fusion AU or shared-verse. The settings exist together, both having strong worldbuilding elements of the original, but are not fully themselves and show obvious elements of the other. EXAMPLE: Unfortunately my most recent example is an HP crossover so. Please keep in mind that this is from four years ago, before R*wling outed herself as a massive bigot: Professor Storm.

Fusion: more or less 1:1 "this character from fandom 1 would be this character from fandom 2" or otherwise "characters from fandom 1 reimagined in fandom 2 with none of the original setting." For a long time, HP was the biggest and most constant example, but uhhh that's clearly been falling out of favor like raw eggs. EXAMPLE: After Me Comes the Flood.

There are other types, like infusing the plot of one narrative into the setting and characters of the other, which is a really fun kind of fusion (I always come back to thinking about Age of Marvels by justplainrii, which only ever got three chapters but still eats at my brain sometimes), buuuuut I'd say most crossovers are some variant of the above four.

Girl Genius AU.

So, after Agatha is mugged and loses her locket, events happen slightly differently, and she is successfully sent home before the Baron sees her.

The wasp-engine is discovered, Wulfenbach takes over the town, and Adam and Lilith successfully spirit themselves and Agatha away under cover of night.

(Moloch Von Zinzer is around somewhere, and vengeful on behalf of his brother who was killed by a sparky Trilobite Locket, but that's not terribly important right now.)

So! About a week and some explanations later, Agatha, Adam, and Lilith Clay are traveling through the Wastelands when a dashing you g Madboy falls out of the sky in his amazing falling machine!

Agatha, breaking through, likes the chance to poke at the machine! Adam and Lilith are suspicious about the Wulfenbach sigils all over "Gil Hoffstetter's" flying machine, and are reluctant to let him leave.

Then some Jaegers show up, with orders to bring him home! And things go from there!

Tarvek being a princess in all but pronouns is so right. He’s the mad scientist’s beautiful daughter, the damsel in distress, the ingenue, daddy’s little villain (but he doesn’t want to be). He’s quite literally royalty but dependent on Agatha to truly retake his crown. He’s got femme coding to contrast Violetta’s butch vibes and Gil’s dashing heroic masculinity. I love him so much he’s such a fun character. I’ve never sat down to think about his gender in depth but happy pride guess I’m gonna have to.

I’ve seen a few people in recent times being all like “don’t assume dnp to be anything but best friends unless they say it outright they’re a couple you’re making them uncomfortable” or whatever and I can’t help but think… switch out one of them for a girl. All the times Dan goes to see Phil’s family. The fact they’ve never been around another human enough for anyone to assume they have a different partner (who they’d never have time for anyway when dnp literally make a big deal of how much time they spend together) Dan literally confirming their relationship was more than romantic (at least at some point) in his coming out video. The double dates they go on with other confirmed couples. How casually they’re talked about as a pair by other people/YouTubers. Slip ups confirming ‘the bed’ ‘the bedroom’ ‘don’t worry guys only I saw Phil’s butt in the mirror not the people on my zoom call” it being known they stayed in a place with 2 bedrooms with another couple in Australia. Posing for naked photos together. One being a literal biological uncle and the other one literally being referred to as a uncle too by the baby’s mother.

The genuine love and affection they have for each other. The way they can’t shut up about the other. Being each others biggest fans. The way they have talked hypothetically about getting a pet together (and had a bloody fish) and the main kicker…. Literally been thinking and designing a FOREVER HOME together since 2017 and now live in it. Together. 😱

genuinely yeah. a huge part of it is just straight up homophobia, but i think the average person who doesn't really pay attention to them/is completely unfamiliar with them DOES actually look at all that and take away the idea that they're a couple at this point in time.

i think an aspect of it with people who are the most vehemently "they're just friends" is like. a lot of the time that's coming from people who did follow them at some point in time, who were involved with the fandom—and who now are acting from a place of shame and unfettered cringe over their past actions & making that everyone else's problem.

sometimes it is really funny to me when people Just Don't Get It though like... dan and phil aren't FOR them. it's not about people who don't get it and that's not the audience dan and phil are prioritizing. and i'm utterly fucking delighted for them that they've pulled off this level of ambiguity for so long even after coming out.

It's a comic, which to avoid Tumblr disappearing this I'll tell you to look up with your preferred search engine, which has been running for over twenty years, has been online for most of them, and which I've been blogging about here for almost ten. It's about a world governed by the logic of pulp novel clichés (simultaneously inverted and elevated, and freely observed by the locals), populated by mad scientists and the citizens who put up with them. Almost every single hero is a different kind of stock villain character. The framing device is that the writers are composing a scholarly biography about the protagonist so sensationalized that they had to relocate into the real world to escape retribution. After it won three Hugo awards in a row the creative team bowed out because they felt they were depreciating the meaning of the award. I'm not sure I'm actually answering what you're asking? Give me a full sentence to work with my family is starving.

The longer I follow you the closer I get...

A running joke in the fandom, or at least the parts I frequent, is that you should never check a page to confirm a fact, because you will get sucked into accidentally rereading from that point to the end.

So it's a pretty easy read, after the first two or three volumes; those are just difficult because the style and coloration is intended to deliver a certain kind of message regarding the way the MC perceives the world, which can be a little jarring if you don't know to expect it. After those first few volumes, though, it's just... easy sailing. You look up and three days have passed without you noticing it.

Plus we just finished up with a nearly year-long side story, so it's great time to catch up and jump in.

Oh this makes the bit where Gil said ok to giving Agatha his empire at least like 30% funnier.

I have a question (or two) about the crack ship about "main character of a book series I read in middle school and only finished out of spite/an OC descendant of a webcomic protagonist that literally came to me in a dream." Is this a ship with Percy Jackson and a descendant of Agatha? Also what's the dynamic between the two?

Percy Jackson I actually read in elementary school and love and adore to this day. Alex Rider is the one I finished out of spite. (I was considering dropping it during... Book 3? I think? And then a boy in my social studies class said "isn't that series for boys?" So I finished the entire thing even though I was bored to tears by the writing style.)

Yes it IS a descendant of Agatha. Her name is Labyrinthia Heterodyne and she did not actually appear in person in the dream so I had to invent her from scratch. She hasn't decided if she's going to be a Bad heterodyne or a Good heterodyne but either way when she grows up she will probably be taking over the entire continent. For now she's content just being Eastern European Kim Possible who causes problems on purpose.
