A Challenge (BOTW Comic Short)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a casual day on Hyrule Castle Barracks training grounds Urbosa sees Revali training with his bow. Knowing his competitive and prideful personality she teases him in his over reliance on his archery skills and asks if that is all he can do? And if so, a true warrior is dynamic and adaptable. She then asks him for a friendly spar session to see what he can do. He knows deep down his swordsmanship pales in comparison to Urbosas but his pride makes it impossible to turn her down. And so begins an important lesson in pride for our Rito Champion.
Just a little short comic I did awhile ago. A plot device in my (Revali x OC) webcomic is that Revali leans towards the bow because of his fear of faltering with the blade. It is a constant test on him and he slowly learns that it's ok to be new at things, but first we must contend with the fear of failiure.

Day 6: "It should have been me." (Follows Day 4)
"Wild..."
"Don't," Wild snarled, sand spraying beneath golden boots as he spun sharply to pace back in the direction he'd come. Heat rose in shimmering waves as the sun beat down on the Gerudo desert. But the young hero's heart was frozen like the depths of Tabantha as scenarios whirled through his mind, each more gruesome and horrid than the next.
"Wild, sit down before you give yourself heat stroke," Sky tried again, voice gentle as he held out a coaxing hand.
"Voe armor has sapphire's. Counteracts the heat."
"Not the point kid," Time replied, head tipped wearily back against the stone walls of Gerudo town. Their leader had stripped out of his armor in an attempt to ward of the ever opressive desert heat, and with out it he looked some how both older and younger than he should have any right to. "Wearing yourself out isn't going to fix things. Chief Riju already sent her best scouts into the desert to look for-"
"I should be the one out there!" Wild snapped, the fingers of one hand tapping anxiously on the handle of his slate as the other rose to angrily yank a lock of long blonde hair from his vision.
"The Yiga know the desert far better than we do," Wars interjected, only for his worlds to be rebuffed by a sharp shake of Wilds head.
"Not better than me. I know every inch of this damn place. I could find them if you'd just let me-"
"Let you do what? Charge out there all on your own with no back up and no plan?" Legend scoffed, raising his chin defiantly when Wild's eyes snapped up to meet his own in a glare. "I know that's how you usually work, and the Yiga clearly know it too. I'd bet everything I own that they are counting on it."
"So what if they are?!" Wild seethed, voice growing steadily louder as he took a step towards the Hero of Legend. "I have faced those assholes more times than any of you can dream. I infiltrated their based. I killed their damn leader!"
"Wild, no one is doubting your skills here. But-"
"WIND IS OUT THERE BECAUSE OF ME!" Wild bellowed. "THEY ARE HURTING HIM BECASUE OF ME! THEY MAY HAVE KILLED HIM BY NOW BECAUSE. OF. ME. THEY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN ME AND LEFT YOU ALL OUT OF IT. **IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME**!"

Gerudo sand-surf rock
They'd be called the Patricias. (Amps courtesy of Robbie.)
I love that the Gerudo and surf rock both have Middle Eastern-ish influences; That was the entire thought process. Just imagine the Surfer's Choice album cover, but make it sand seals.

Loz: TotK - How is Hyrule Imperialist?
I've seen a lot of people saying that TotK is imperialist propaganda & that Ganondorf was justified & that Rauru tried to annex the Gerudo but... how do you figure?
A. Imperialism is defined as "a policy of extending a country's power & influence through diplomacy or military force." Which we never really see Hyrule do.
B. From what I'm seeing "annexation is when one country forcibly asserts control & sovereignty over another country's territory. This usually follows military occupation. Annexation is unilateral. Territorial control is declared by the occupying power; the other party gets no say."
At what point did Rauru or the Hylians portray either of those things? Specifically declaring territorial control of the Gerudo? If this were the case, then why go through the trouble of inviting Ganondorf & suggesting they share in Hyrule's bounty when Rauru was already the king of Hyrule & had the upper hand?
Especially when he could've just sent his military & been like "mine now."
Like, all we know for a fact is that Rauru requested an audience with Ganondorf multiple times to specifically, as he said, "share in Hyrule's bounty," that the Zonai had a mine beneath the Gerudo Desert (which we don't know whether or not the Gerudo were using it or had access to; we don't even know if they knew about the Zonaite beneath them), Ganondorf physically attacked first, & that he went around forcibly taking control of what were verbally described as "free Gerudo cities." (Which is something else of interest, there were once multiple Gerudo settlements, but that's for another time.) He then kills Rauru's wife, takes her Secret Stone, & besieges Hyrule.
There's also the fact that at least 1 Gerudo opposed his actions enough to side with another country over him. In an extreme case, this could possibly indicate a civil war between the Gerudo, just like what happened in OoT. Which would explain why he'd felt the need to capture other Gerudo settlements. To assert his dominance & regain control.
There just isn't enough information to say one way or the other if Rauru tried to annex the Gerudo. And, in fact, there's more evidence to suggest otherwise.
Also keep in mind that the Gerudo are most likely not natives of the Gerudo Desert as they could only have appeared after Skyward Sword, which they didn't appear in at all beyond a mention of the word "Gerudo." After Skyward Sword, the Hylians lived upon the surface. And before the ancient times of SS, what we know of as the Gerudo Desert was named the Lanayru Sea.
In fact, the only thing with the "Gerudo" name at the time were a species of dragonfly that lived there as mentioned above. And even as a desert, it was specifically referred to as the "Lanayru Desert," not the "Gerudo Desert."
As far as we know, the Gerudo didn't come until later. And if this turns out to be the case, then don't Hylians, at least technically, have more right to the desert & its resources than the Gerudo?
Remember, Hylians ARE native to Hyrule. Hyrule was founded by Hylians, who worshiped Hylia, who created said Hylians, & the 3 Golden Goddesses, who created Hyrule.
Add to that the fact that the Gerudo are never really depicted as worshiping any of Hyrule's pantheon. The closest thing we see to godly figures in their culture being the Goddess of the Sand, the 7 Heroines, & the 8th (who I call the Forsaken Hero based on TotK side quest spoilers).
My guess is that at some point before OoT, they migrated from a land to the southwest, on the other side of the Lanayru Desert (possibly from a different desert), & settled in the desert itself. At the time of the ancient past of SS, that land was kept completely separate from Hyrule by what, back then, was the Lanayru Sea.
This, however, would make the Gerudo foreigners. Hell, isn't Ganondorf technically an attempted colonizer in TotK & an actual colonizer in OoT?
I just... It seems more like Rauru was trying to handle things diplomatically, possibly even trying to become allies. Because if he really had been trying to take over the Gerudo by force, he wouldn't have had any need for things like diplomacy. Heck, with a good enough engineering degree, he wouldn't have even needed his Secret Stone! Their Zonai Device Constructs could've wiped the Gerudo out entirely!

The sun slants golden across the canyon walls, bleeding away into shadow a story down as the ravine grows deeper. Sand whispers beneath his boots, one steady step after another. His hood is pulled low, cloth mask hiding what little is visible of his face. The crowd murmurs around him, Gerudo sitting at their stalls, others perusing the wares. The market sparse, more empty than it might once have been, the Gerudo who walk through doing so quickly, their expressions wary and harried. They cast him glances as he passes - a cloaked figure, reins in hand, Shuna plodding along gently behind him, the elk's head bowed, black liquid eyes tracking those who pass by. Nobody tries to stop him, in the end, all of them looking away again just as quickly.
They don't want trouble, and they're right not to.
He doesn't want trouble either.

I've been playing lots of Breath of the Wild again these past few days, since I finally got the DLCs. After beating the nerve-wracking spike-laden temple, "The Champion's Ballad" is going to lead me back to the Gerudo desert. And since I never uploaded my painting of everyone's favorite desert queen here, I'm doing it now. ^_^ ♥ Keep reading to find a close up and some WIP pictures.

Day 7 (Follows Day 6 and Day 4): Made to Watch, "Can you hear me?"
"You heroes are so moronically predictable," the blade master drawled, biceps bulging beneath the crimson mesh of his uniform he crossed his arms, head shaking patronizingly as his underlings fought to pin the Hero down. "It's a little sad if I am being honest. The tiniest hint of peril, and you throw yourself into the chasm without a second thought. How your lot ever managed to defeat our magnificent Lord Ganon eludes me."
"It eluded him too, right up until I split his monstrous face open," Wild snarled, grunting in pain when one of the foot soldiers served swift retribution to his words with a swift backhand.
"Our divine lord is the monster? When your goddess is the one sending children to fight her battles?!"
Rage hotter than the lava's of Death Mountain surged in his view, flooding his mouth with savage copper as the blade master delivered a casual kick to the tiny, twitching body at his feet. Wind made no sound at the rough treatment, no protest or cry of pain, just a soft gasp as the kicks momentum flipped him onto his back. Their sailor skin was pallid and sickly looking, his sun bleached locks darkened and matted to his head with with sweat and sand. Hazy blue orbs flickered in and out of view beneath nearly closed lids, limbs shaking with residual tremors as roots of lightning disappeared under his tattered tunic. Wilds felt his heart shatter at the ragged little breaths that struggled to lift their youngest's chest, split lips crusted with blood and bile open in an unconscious attempt to pull in more oxygen.
"You have me, let him go!"
"No," the Yiga replied, voice laced with poisonous satisfaction as he casually planted one boot on Winds chest, arms unfolding to reach back and draw his windcarver. "No, I am going to make you watch him die. We'll take you back to HQ, and you will watch as we track down and kill every last hero in your little party. You'll watch us master the time portals, and then, I will personally kill you and present all of your heads to the dark lord as a gift to his resurrection."
The bleeding eye on the behemoths mask nearly glowed with glee as he slowly raise his sword, savoring the struggles of one prey, and the deathly stillness of the other.
"For Ganon..."
Thunder roared from the clear blue sky, and the blademaster slowly fell back, his dead body barely making a sound as it hit the sand. The foot soldiers scattered as a wave of Gerudo warriors surged across the sand behind their seals, ululating war cries as they ran their foe's down. A smaller group split off, shields and limbs flying as they sprinted towards their fallen friends.
"Wild! Wind!"
"He need's help!" Wild croaked, wincing as his injuries made themselves known.
"You both do. Lets start with your head! What the hell were you thinking going off on your own?" Sky snapped, rare anger flaring bright in his eyes as steadied Wilds shoulders.
"Sky, if you wanna tear him a new one, wait until we get back to Gerudo town and then get in line," Twilight growled, knocking his forehead against Wild's temple as he pressed his hands down on a particularly jagged gash.
"Wind," Wild whimpered, cornflower eyes locked on the huddle of bodies around their youngest.
"Sailor, can you hear me?!" Warriors asked, voice full of the force calm he used when trying to maintain a disordered battle field. "Wake up buddy."
"Signs of dehydration. Pulse is fast and uneven, breathing is shallow...and I've got multiple electrical burns," Legend stated, voice and face tight with forced blankness. "Based on the patterns, the sick bastards must have used shock arrows."
"Potions aren't an option. I don't think we can get him to drink anything with the way his muscles are spasming," Time added, his larger body dwarfing Winds as hands steadied the pirates neck.
"What about finding a fairy?" Hyrule chimed in, pink light coating his hands as he swiftly pressed them to Winds chest.
"He doesn't have time for us to hunt for one," Four shook his head, purple eyes hard as he leaned back and whistled for one of the nearby seals. "We need to get back to Gerudo town, now."
