I’m a journalist in the making. When I was 18, I was editor in chief of my high school’s newspaper, which I founded and with a team of fourteen students, we covered the rampant discrimination and police brutality in Minneapolis, which later became the heart breaking crime scene of George Floyd. When I was studying at NYU Shanghai, China’s first Sino-US research university, I wrote for the school’s newspaper On Century Avenue about the systemic racism happening at Mizzou and the student blackout at NYUSH. At Bard College in New York, I founded a newspaper with Johanna Costigan, now a journalist at Forbes, called Bard Watch, that published investigative articles and promoted watch dog journalism. I speak Mandarin and have a strong understanding of Arabic, two languages I hope to use in my career.

Now, a new chapter begins at Columbia, where I will finish my major in East Asian Studies with a concentration in political science in my pursuit to becoming a knowledgeable, well rounded journalist based in New York City. I spent a lot of time working in different careers, from the service industry to real estate, and I keep finding that what makes you proud is the direction you should take in your professional career. I find pride in the pursuit of truth and knowledge, reporting the facts, and uncovering important stories and creating change through a positive discourse. I’m going to NYC to find the best version of myself, and this journey starts with Columbia. I cannot wait.

The Arbor is a heartfelt, scathing docudrama about promise without fulfillment, centered on the playwright Andrea Dunbar and her children, particularly the eldest, Lorraine, who is played on screen by the actress Manjinder Virk, lip-synching the actual Lorraine's voice from recorded interviews. Director Clio Barnard uses this technique throughout the film, with the voices of Lorraine's siblings, her foster parents, and other members of the Dunbar family dubbed in place of the voices of the on-screen actors. It's an arresting device that runs the risk of having a film full of monologues, which Barnard avoids by staging the scenes in the actual locations, particularly the drab, run-down council estate (i.e. "public housing"), where the Dunbars lived. She also includes scenes from Dunbar's plays, and the film, Rita, Sue and Bob Too (Alan Clarke, 1987), that was made from one of them. The Arbor culminates in the story of Lorraine's descent into drug addiction and the consequent death of her small son. It's not a film designed to lift your spirits, but the effectiveness of Barnard's way of telling the story makes it well worth seeing.
