We had a couple assignments where we had to design characters but only draw their silhouettes to help us practice shape language, design clarity, and making a diverse lineup of characters

For the first one we had to draw a lineup of five ninja characters with the goal being that they could be easily recognizable as a group of ninjas. I decided to go the research route for this one and base each one on an aspect of Japanese culture as well as giving some of them more obscure Japanese weapons.  From left to right; the first one is a Kabuki performer by day and wears an Oni mask. The second is a farmer who took up assassination to make ends meet. The center one is the leader and is a disgraced ex-samurai. The fourth is also a performer and the sister of the one with the Oni mask; she wears a kitsune mask and fox tail and knows a lot about Japanese mythology. The final one is a geisha by day who specializes in collecting intel. 

As for the second one we had to do a lineup of robot designs. This one ended up being the most diverse design-wise since the definition for what a robot can be or look like is super broad which is the main reason why the professor had us do this.  I may or may not have gone overboard for this one since I had a couple design ideas that have been living in my head rent-free for months now and I used this as an excuse to finally hash them out (the two biggest ones, their names are Velcro and Thimble). The other three are just one-off designs I came up with randomly

Favorite material from which to construct definitely-not-independently-mobile mannequins?

A few examples as food for thought: Wooden (although it’s almost certainly never been part of a tree)? Typical shopping-mall plastic (almost)? Not-quite-skin? Actual skin?

For the sake of Uncanny, the good ol' skin-covered plastic is a classic. The feel of something hard and cold sliding under something soft and- yknow.

Otherwise I'm a fan of metal-plastic mix! Silicone is a good way to hide the cracks between the plastic shells which cover metallic pistons and gears and the like. Classic animatronic style! Kind of like that new FNAF game... Sister Location, I think? But the tube innards aren't as efficient as normal pneumatics and motors/servos, in my opinion.

My entries for a little challenge suggested by @kinmeki along with @cathianemelian and others cool artist.

1 hour to come up with a character design. The topics ? Geisha cat and toaster waiter !
