My Top 12 Favorite Anime of 2023 (and more)!

This was a great year for anime, so here's a long list of my top 12 (including some bonus great anime). If you get tired of clicking the review links, check out my anime overview collection for all of them here. You can also check out my list of favorite manga here!

Some of these are ongoing, so consider those only a review of the first cour-- no official endorsement on the rest because it hasn't aired yet!

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (Season 2)

When I listed G-Witch in last year's top anime list, I prayed the show wouldn't betray me. Fortunately, it didn't! Though the final half of the show was a bit rushed, it remained must-see, compelling sci-fi full of exciting twists and turns. And I adore the well developed romance between the robot-piloting protagonist and precious girl, Suletta, and her fierce fiancé, Miorine. Whether you’re here for starcrossed queer lovers, robots wrecking each other, tense battles between opposing political factions, or morally-horrifying moms on a revenge spree, you’re in for a treat.

Yuri is my Job!

Hime is roped into working at a cafe where the waitresses playact as students of the fictional all girl’s school from a beloved novel series. However, Hime finds her co-worker, Mitsuki, has an inexplicable grudge against her. Thus begins a tangled web of romance and wounded feelings among the girls in the cafe! Yuri is My Job seems like a fun comedy boasting a cast full of quirky lesbians, but then reveals itself to be a complicated and fascinating examination of performance- as it intersects with queerness, girlhood, and the desire to be “likeable” and “cute". It's top-tier lesbian drama full of fraught relationships and it's absolutely worth a watch.

The Apothecary Diaries (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Though it's still going, I have to sing the praises of this dazzling anime about a saavy apothecary who uses her medical expertise to solve the many murders and betrayals in the Emperor's palace. MaoMao is a fantastic lead, a poison-obsessed gremlin who's whip-smart, deadpan, and fun to follow. The Apothecary Diaries has intrigue, well-developed characters, and an impeccable atmosphere. It tells a great range of stories, from romantic triumph, to bittersweet tales of recovering from grief, to pure tragedies. I'm totally hooked.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

When Euphie is dumped by her fiance at a ball, the oddball princess Anis rescues her. Euphie becomes Anis' assistant in her quest to develop magical tools. The girls also start to develop feelings for each other, while discovering a conspiracy among the nobility. I'm always desperately in need of cool lesbians having action-packed fantasy adventures, and Magirevo delivers. The characters grow in entertaining ways, we get to see them fight dragons in killer action scenes, and the romantic development is completely satisfying. It's a simple story at its core, but the lovable characters, joyous queerness and jubilant execution make it a great watch.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story (Season 2)

In the second season of the anime about girls homoerotically golfing while dealing with the mafia and ludicrous family drama, Birdie Wing remains a bombastically absurd sports anime that is fun all the way through. Please come watch these girls get ridiculous sports injuries, scream their super golf attacks, experience extremely extra plot twists--and be super gay with each other, of course. The finale didn't go quite as hard as I wanted (and the romance is more subtexual than I wanted), but you need to allow yourself to experience the madness of Birdie Wing.

Skip and Loafer

An endearingly dorky, earnest, and driven girl moves from her small town to Tokyo. While she struggles to adjust, she befriends a nice popular boy who's got some baggage. Skip and Loafer is a show that’s like a warm hug. It's sweet, entertaining and funny. It handles adolescent struggles with tender nuance. There's a emphasis on kindness, connection, and looking past stereotypes and misconceptions. It also includes a trans character who's treated with respect (and is a great character in general!) Let this show touch your heart.

Undead Murder Farce

An immortal woman has had most of her body stolen by a mysterious man. Reduced to a head carried around by her maid, she teams up with a half-demon man to track the thief down while solving supernatural mysteries all across Victorian England.

This a fun, campy mystery series starring three asshole weirdo protagonists, it’s bursting with supernatural creatures and literary references. We've got Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom of the Opera, Carmilla and more...along with a vampire murders and werewolf drama galore. UDM is a wonderful romp with stylish, slick direction... and it’s unexpectedly really gay. I’m aching to see more of these scrappy misfits and their adventures.

Migi & Dali

A story of twins who are pretending to be one kid in order to fool their foster parents and find out who killed their mother. It starts out as an utterly absurd comedy becomes a impressive and genuinely tense murder mystery that is incredibly moving at times, all while keeping up it’s signature brand of goofiness. There’s genuine commentary on abuse, the damage you can do to children by forcing perfection on them, the struggle of being a foster kid, grief and recovery and more. There's also some great character development. It's a weird one, but it's absolutely worth sticking with.

Pluto

Somebody is killing the most advanced robots in the world and murdering humans alongside them. A robot detective is trying to track this killer down, but he might be compromised as well. Pluto is a tense, tense, tightly plotted robot murder mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Through robots, it explores the idea of being a tool in a corrupt system, and tackles subjects like war, imperialism, and the nature of hatred. It's a masterful psychological thriller with stunning animation and a rich story.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

This anime approaches the story of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona's seven evil exes from a brands new angle, and the results are great. We get a exploration of relationships and regrets, the messiness of communication and connection, the trials of becoming an adult, all with the signature goofy video game antics. Characters neglected in previous iterations finally get their due, new facets of the story are explored, queer relationships are delved into more, girls kiss...and it's all accompanied by phenomenal animation and a killer soundtrack.

Soaring Sky! Precure

Sora lives in a world called Skyland and wants to be a great hero. When rescuing the kidnapped baby princess, she falls through a portal to earth. There she meets her fellow magical warriors, and as Precure they protect the princess from the villains!

This vibrant, warm-hearted adventure got me back on the Precure train! This series boasts a lot exciting firsts for the franchise--the first official male cure, the first main cure that's eighteen years old- but above all, it has a lively team of characters with who have an entertaining dynamic and enjoyable individual journeys. It's often very funny, the baby has a surprisingly good character arc, and it's bursting with magical girl (and boy) goodness! It's also not afraid to give you an emotional gutpunch when you've been lured into a false sense of security by all the fun times. If you're new to Precure, this is a great jumping on point, and if you've watched it before, this is a series you won't want to miss.

I'm in Love with the Villainess

Rae is reincarnated as the heroine of her favorite dating sim. But she has no interest in romancing any of the boys- she’s head over heels for Claire Francois, the snooty villainess.

Villainess may not be as polished--storywise or animation-wise-- as these other entries. It's a messy series, it has plenty of problems...but it's also very fun, and it touched my queer little heart like no other. Queer people get to indulge in our imperfect faves too, and the silly shenanigans, blatant lesbian wish fulfillment, honest advocacy for queer people, and the joy and earnestness of the series works for me!

Some Other Great Anime:

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Frieren is a long-lived elf who was once part of an adventuring party that saved the world from the Demon Lord. But now her friends are passing away and the world is moving on. She decides to retrace her old party's journey so she can understand what she's feeling.

Frieren is both an interesting examination of what happens after the hero saves the world, as well as a meditation on mortality, grief, and the endless march of time. It takes you on a quiet, beautiful and sometimes touching journey though a pastoral fantasy world. There's some breath-taking animation and excellent atmosphere to enjoy.

Spy x Family (Season 3)

Spy x Family is pretty much staying the course from when we last checked in, though this season gives a lot more attention to Yor, and I love the cruise ship arc and all the ridiculous fights she gets into a lot! That arc contains some of my favorite gags of the series too (like Loid’s attempts to be a cool dad). Otherwise, Spyfam has settled into a series that intends to be around for the long haul, so don’t expect too much forward plot momentum. And Yuri (the man, not the genre) unfortunately still exists. Overall it was good season and remains a fun adaptation. Yor, please step on me.

If you had to pick one film that was your favorite from each unit of your Queer Cinema Syllabus, which ones would they be and why?

The Queer Cinema Syllabus grew out of a conversation that @shortpplfedup and I were having about what queer works I would show to a prospective BL fan, which eventually led to the creation of @the-conversation-pod. Captain Hands here has decided to run the gauntlet and has reached Unit 2.

Unit 1: Coming of Age Post-Moonlight

It's definitely Pariah (2011). This movie and Moonlight (2016) are having a complex conversation about Blackness and Queerness that feels so resonant to me. It's so rare that we see lesbians of any sort treated with this much complexity and sympathy in a contemporary setting. The complex web of lesbian interactions here isn't matched that often, and the only other movie that comes to mind it The Watermelon Woman (1996).

Unit 2: Race, Disability, and Class

Probably The Way He Looks (2014) because it's an easy layup to introduce folks to the genre. The intersection between Leo's blindness and his queerness gives the newer person multiple things to think about and forces them to consider how queer people are more than just their queerness. I also feel warmly about this film because it was a project we followed all the way from short film to movie, and I love that we were able to get the entire cast back.

Unit 3: Faith and Religion

You haven't gotten here, but this is where things start to get especially heavy. I think for this section I'm going with The Wise Kids (2011) because I really like the way Stephen Cone approaches the struggle with faith queer and non-queer people have in evangelical spaces. There's an honesty that I really admire. This is not an easy film, but it's lingered with me for over a decade.

Unit 4: Heartbreak Alley

This is the section of straight losses. I don't know that I ever want to watch it again, but I would probably select Bent (1997) as my favorite because the idea that we could still love even in the greatest of horrors spoke to me. I also think the performances in this adaptation are phenomenal.

Unit 5: Lesbians

I think we just passed Lesbian Visibility Day, so happy birthday, lesbians! This is actually a difficult selection because there are so many great films in this section. I think, today, I'm giving it to The Handmaiden (2016), but I almost chose Bound (1996).

Unit 6: Gems

I don't even need to look to know Big Eden (2000) is in this section. This section whips ass all around, but Big Eden is my favorite because there's just so much love all over this movie, and every new fact I learn about the BTS of it makes me love it more. Arye Gross and Eric Shweig did not have to go as hard as they did in this movie. The director left that choice to them a veteran actors and they did that 23 years ago. Nothing but admiration and respect. This is one of my most beloved films.

Unit 7: Asian Film Warm-up

This is a difficult selection because I think it depends on my mood, but for now, I'll go with The Stranger by the Shore (2020). This is a very Japanese take on second-chance romance. I like the way Japan approaches the quiet internalized homophobia that grips us. Some of the same things in Minato's Laundromat can be found here. It's also gorgeous and approaches sex in a frank way that I really loved.

Unit 8: Yaoi

Once again I don't even need to look to know that it's Yuri!!! On Ice (2016). This show is so goddamn gay. I know people feel like it was censored because of the kiss, but these two proposed to each other. It's what sports anime wishes it could be with the open queerness on display from so many characters. It's beautiful and so much fun.

Unit 9: Boys Love

I will not be selecting a favorite BL, but I will say that I really love The Boy Foretold by the Stars (2020) and it's a movie. I loved that we had a femme lead for once and that they explored what faith meant for femmes. It's a film that took the romantic lead's gay awakening very seriously and explored what being together might look like in a sequel called Love Beneath the Stars.

in lieu of a bachelorette party

10pm, sunday, aug 6, 2023

we're officially in the period of the summer that has been planned out since months and months ago, in the lead up to some dear friends' wedding; time is telescoping in a very odd way! after traveling the past two weeks, my re-entry was good but hard; i came back from my trip thinking i'd be all revitalized and looking around me with new eyes, which in a way i did, but then i was also pretty wiped. i didn't really want to spend all week hibernating, but i guess it was good to recharge my batteries since i also had five different party/gathering-type things (three this weekend, including the aforementioned bachelorette).

reading can't forget to mention finishing carmen maria machado's in the dreamhouse, which was gripping and devastating and still beautiful somehow. the experience of reading it was so...i couldn't stop once i got started, you know? short fragmented chapters, some funny, some incredibly sad. every once in a while there would be a detail or an allusion to something i could relate to, punctuating the intense surreality / unreality used to talk about the abuse with a sudden concrete reality that was. striking. loved the device of the footnotes, pointing out where certain things are matching up with folklore tropes? as a form of foreshadowing and ironic, devastating commentary? inspired. that's just one detail, but it's one i can sum up.

abrupt tonal shift and getting back to fantasy / adventure, a.k. larkwood's the unspoken name has been very engaging this week too. part one was...fresh but in a comforting sort of vein, with a young protag escaping a bad fate under the protection of a new mysterious mentor, who then helps her get an education, martial arts training, before he sends her out on a mission--reminded me of half a dozen beloved fantasy novels, with the addition of some fun details! for example, neither is actually described in much detail, but our main character and her mentor are clearly not Human; she has grey skin and tusks (my mind went right to a dnd-style orc?) and he has mobile, elongated ears, which seem to telegraph his emotions much like those in the goblin emperor and was an *immediate* delight to envision. just about a third of the way through this one now; it feels like a locked tomb book with a slightly different magic system, and i'm really enjoying it.

watching plane movies while returning home:

the battle of the sexes (2017) -- entertaining more because i didn't know the history and always enjoy the depiction of historical women's sports and sports teams; emma stone is great but has virtually no chemistry with either of her romantic counterparts, painfully straight energy overall. i was too entertained by watching steve carell and sarah silverman in their respective period hair and makeup . kudos to whoever was the tennis stunt doubles, it was legitimately fun to try and follow the games.

banshees of inisherin (2022) -- people who talk about the overdone stereotyped blarney-filled hollywood depiction of ireland in this one are missing the fact that it's an intentional (ironic?) depiction; see, the imprecision when it comes to year/time passing / calendars and whatnot. sort of waiting for godot-y in its heightened reality / absurdity. my lukewarm take is that it was definitely meant to be a play, and would have worked a lot better that way. not sure i'll watch it again, not sure i *got* it, but it will certainly live in my brain rent-free.

finished strange world (2022) as a palate cleanser-- i wanted to support it, the box office and overall reception to this was pretty disappointing but it's fine! like it's a cute kids' movie! you know, disney's first gay character, thinly veiled climate analogy lesson, absolutely gorgeous animation and colors, what's not to love.

the first three episodes of season 1 of the white lotus . hypnotizing like a train wreck, but i'll wait until i've seen more of it to give a real write-up.

listening you ever watch a viral video and then realize you're captivated by both the cute videos of people dancing and the soundtrack? (and recognizing the background scenery, and it turns out i was right!!) anyway i went and found these two tracks courtesy of just this experience, so thanks to youtuber thoraya i guess?

UPDATE: saw hadestown live today!!! the original broadway recording didn't prepare me for how much i would love it, how dynamic and captivating the live band and incredible ensemble would be-- and of course i was crying almost immediately, and was clutching my chest during 'wait for me' both times. but then again, the performance i saw didn't include this one instrumental track i love and had on my semester playlist all spring, so here:

playing finally got the cut-scene celebrating my community center completion in stardew, hell yeah. had two great dnd sessions; one campaign successfully defeated a monstrously-oversized jaguar and decided which faction we're going to attempt to win over first, while the other group went shopping and spent some downtime at base and gathering info on some individual plots! napoleon did exist in this world and was a gnome, and our organization assassinated him apparently??, also this just feels like a good time to mention that their resume also includes '1841 – Controlled controversy riots when “Dinosaurs” suggested as a creature alongside and separate from “Dragons” ', which sent us into absolute hysterics when the DM shared that.

making it's summer, so i crowdsourced a ratatouille recipe and could not have been happier with the outcome. saving it here for posterity!

working on i was very diligent with RA work this week, since it feels like i always neglect it over the summer for absolutely no reason, especially since it like. pays me. but i also have been using it as productive procrastination since i'm actively dragging my heels in sending the last few students their essay feedback and grade breakdowns from the summer course. it means confronting my judgments and math and possible mistakes from earlier in july, and trying to either defend or amend them as necessary, and i just have been. napping rather than actually do it. which is silly, and also stupid since i have actual work to be doing! just get this over with, and you can be free!

ANYWAY

-makes the prettiest most delicate looking pies. like they real pretty. fancy flower designs on top made out of pastry. so beautiful.

-obsession with dressing up teddy bears in funky lil outfits. they sit on a shelf in his bedroom and stare menacingly. he loves them. they all have names. he makes most of them himself but his friends give him many plushie gifts.

-wears socks and sandals sometimes

-the fucking king of bubble baths, he loves his bath supplies. mans favourite activity is just relaxing in THE most aesthetically pleasing bubble bath of all time. he has his scented candles, his soft classical music, a glass of wine or seven. bliss.

-owns foxes! the red fox is one of his state animals so i like to imagine he rescues foxes that can't be rewilded and nurses them back to health or simply takes care of them. they're all named after types of magnolia. they are his babies.

-really good at storytelling. like. REALLY good. he gets really into it and does a bunch of voices for different characters, mans has the Muppets he can totally do this, he doesn't speak up very often to tell stories but when he does? enthralled.

-pretty much a disney princess. animals love him. mans can pet wild animals. he doesn't do it often because Respect Nature but mans will pick up hurt animals to take them to a vet because he can.

-owns many fancy ducks. he has the coolest duck as his state waterfowl, mans loves a fancy lookin duck. theyre all named after plants

-speaking of plants, he's a total dork about plants. HUGE nerd. physically cannot shut up about plants. he gets very excited when he sees a plant he hasn't seen before, takes pictures and stores em in a scrapbook for plants he has. owns MANY houseplants. his garden is BEAUTIFUL. flowers and trees of many different types, he grows all his own fruit and vegetables, he loves plants. so much.

-incredible at ballet. he's been dancing for almost two centuries, he's very talented and makes it look easy. he's performed in many ballets, and the south always comes to his performances to give him flowers and compliments.

-baking is his passion. mans has a huge sweet tooth and spends a lot of his free time baking with equally as much of a baking nerd, Alabama. he makes some good fuckin desserts, he usually gives these to friends as gifts but mans keeps a few for himself. as a treat.

-despite not really being known for it, sippi can figure skate. he likes swirly twirly sports. if he can spin and look pretty? hes in.

-gay.

-very gay.

-hopeless romantic. daydreams about kissing his crush under the stars. sadly he is bitchless.

-hella muscular, hella squishy. your honour he is THICCC. not an exaggeration. he looks soft and cute because he is soft and cute, until he flexes, then he looks like he could fuck you up. mans has those pinchable cheeks, grandmas love him. very strong arms and legs because ballet but he has squishy thighs and soft stomach. the missititties are fantastic. i hc him as a bit overweight. kneading him like bread dough rn. he is a BEAR.

-puts the ass in landmass, lord this man is caked up

-PUT HIM IN A DRESS. A SOFT PRETTY DRESS WITH A FLOWY SKIRT PERFECT FOR TWIRLING. PUT HIM IN IT.

-enjoys flower pressing. mans has a little book with dried flowers in it. it's very relaxing.

-fuckin angelic singing voice. could be a mermaid if he wanted to be.

-stretch marks. because they're cute.

-cannot drive for shit. his truck is 73% duct tape. is not allowed to drive with other people in the car because he is terrifying. speed limits are a suggestion. mans is going sonic speeds down those country roads.

-covered in freckles. button nose. dimples when he smiles. has many scars.

-cries over sad songs and pictures of kittens.

-gives his friends bouquets with sweet meanings, mans speaks flower language.

-the KING of flower crowns. mans is always wearing one, he makes them so intricate and detailed and he loves doing it. gives all his friends loving flower crowns.

-has a magnolia sleeve tattoo because magnolias symbolise perseverance and mans has been through some shit.

-vegetarian 2x a week

-nerd. has cute glasses because he highkey can't see.

-THE prettiest eyes. ethereal. enchanting. crystalline blue.

-works as a weatherman and LOVES it. aside from when he gets called landmass.

-definitely a storm chaser

-bama calls him Maggie, short for Magnolia

-everyone has a different nickname for him. sippi, missy, sips, magnolia, miss, maggie, miso, misosouppi, souppi, sippo, missis, the list is endless

-incredible hugger. he's chubby and warm and smells like magnolias and baking, and he has titties you can bury your face in. he's perfect. and very touch starved. will ruffle other states hair.

I love him your honour. He is my darling magnolia. I want to kiss him.

thoughts on jolymesfoo because i am always thinking about them personally

really really good like, their up their as one of the jobros that i can look at and really get when ppl say 'holy shit they were literally gay and in love??' because MAN

like i think, NOT MUCH, buT there is a slight one sidedness to romantic love that can be taken from the context of the plot of stone ocean. not so much that i dont think jolyne doesnt love them or not romantically, i think she might love them a lot but a lot of her character between not having time or the emotional ability to stop and consider feelings like that at the time of stone ocean. but i think she loves them a lot, i think they saved her

Ermes is SO important to Jolyne right away, she and food were part of the process of pulling her out and dusting her off when she hit rock bottom. So much of that was her own strength but because of them and so many others she was able to know she was loved and cared for. their dedication to her and her to them is what made her stronger... none of them would be anywhere without each other they NEEDED each other

I think so much of the sports max fight and Ermes' "i want to cry my eyes out by your side" line SO much, that even despite how much she grew and became strong to take on her goals alone, she was supported and loved by jolyne and would fall back to her care in an instant.

and in general they have such good chemistry, their sO silly with each other, the many scenes were their goofin off and being silly to each other is sO good. their two peas in a pod

THAT PLANKTON LEARNED TO LOVE BEING A WOMAN THROUGH BEING IN LOVE WITH A WOMAN, their so trans lesbian to me it makes me crazy!!

but their whOLE thing with jolyne is sO!!! AHHH

Foo Fighters is such a rough mean character, in the most charming way. shes like a beloved wild animal ready to bite at anyone who she upsets her

but with jolyne and ermes? shes so soft and shows such care for them,,

i know its her job as their team healer, but the scenes were she gentle heals their wounds and speaks to them with such care in her voice really gets my ass!! when FF was nearly killed by pucci, still hardly even fully formed, no longer has a body and has CRAWLED her way to jolyne only for nearly the first thing they do, is heal jolyne...

and the Dragon's dream fight where Jolyne begs anasui to help FF, and Anasui saying that even if he wanted to, FF specifically said to not help JUST so he could dedicate 100% of his abilities and focus on keeping Jolyne safe. FF straight up would give their life a 100 times just to keep jolyne safe.. that plankton fell in love with that woman fr

i’ve been lucky enough that even tho i grew up in a conservative rural christian area that i’ve just like. known a lot of queer people. pretty sure i’ve told this story before but the first trans person i ever knew transitioned when i was in elementary or middle school and i just. legitimately thought i had their name wrong the whole time. no one explained it to me until i realized a couple years later. and then you have my mom ( @theaccidentallibrarian ) who’s bi, her best friend is pan, one of her former coworkers is gay, for a long time my neighbors were a gay couple, and in middle school one of my friends came out as bi (hi @sparingiscaring ) and another as ace so i’ve just been lucky in that it’s just always been normal. hell, i thought everyone was bi growing up. i’m not even mspec myself i just figured when i got older i’d be attracted to girls eventually.

yuri on ice - anime - a sports anime for non-sports anime fans. an ice skater returns home after losing in a competition and while he’s wallowing in his own sadness his idol shows up to his house demanding to be his coach. beautifully animated and such a good story of yuri trying his best to make viktor proud. they never explicitly say they’re dating, but they do exchange rings in a church and they kiss so like,,

what we do in the shadows - tv show - the three main vampires are all into boys and girls (actually thinking on it now i can’t recall if nadja has mentioned being with girls before? but nandor and lazlo definitely are into both) and it is a bit more of casual representation instead of driving the plot, but also,, pretty sure nandor and guillermo will be getting together in season four,,, (also s4 spoilers: pretty sure it’s been leaked that guillermo will get a boyfriend in s4 too, at least for a bit)

ouran high school host club - anime - okay. not explicitly trans but like. every transmasc i’ve ever met has related to haruhi on some level. also haruhi is my go to example when i explain my own label of cassgender since it’s not a common term and just. even without the trans coding it’s hilarious

zombieland saga - anime - more casual representation! a hilarious idol anime in which all the idols are zombies. and one of the zombies is explicitly trans! she was also shown in australian parliament because of this image.

So maybe already asked but…what is Yuri on Ice? And who are your OC’s? What are they like? Favorite food? Pet? Hobby? Halloween costume of choice? Oh wow, thank you, what a nice ask!!! No need to apologise, and trust me - one quick glance through my other asks will show you MUCH longer asks than this one! All very beloved, don't worry! Long asks are fun!

So, first question: Yuri On Ice is a popular sports anime about figure skating, and has one of the most blatantly gay couples ever put to anime as the leading roles! Very fun, very sweet, highly recommended if you're ever looking for something to watch!

So, OCs! I have a few, but the one you'll see most often around here is Kyder, I talk about her quite a bit and actually answered two OC questionnaires about her on this blog, the posts are somewhere on here! She has two versions, her original version I made as a D&D character where she's a high elf paladin (don't worry if that doesn't mean much, just picture an elf, put them in knight's armour, and give them a bit of basic magic and there you go!), but she also has a modern AU where she's a human, for both types of fun!

Her personality varies a bit depending on AU, her modern version is far more soft and innocent while her D&D counterpart usually feels like she needs to mask her true self, but both versions are sweethearts at their core and just want a friend to tag along with, someone who doesn't mind holding their hand when the world is a bit scary... They're too indecisive to pick a favourite food but anything involving cinnamon or dark chocolate is usually a safe bet, she has a pet cat named Princess in her modern AU, they're both still kind of in the process of trying to figure out their own hobbies (they didn't have the chance for a long time for backstory reasons), they've never actually dressed up for Halloween - but hypothetically speaking, the D&D version in particular would make a GREAT Morticia Addams if she could get past the embarrassment of dressing up and if The Addams Family existed in medieval times...

And of course, the most fun questions! Both versions are extremely accident prone for various reasons, most of them backstory related again - and also a lot of trauma involved... I won't go into too much detail in case you're not up for that, but if you wanna see, you can dig up my omo OC questionnaire answers for them both and get all the details! As for wearing something to help, yep, D&D Kyder has - send another ask if you want more details on that so I can tag it appropriately without tagging this particular ask, because I want people to see this one!

BBS: Putting the Com in RomCom (a crack analysis)

BBS has categorically been described as a romcom which we all know is a bald-faced lie made by lying liars who lie otherwise why else would BBS tumblr hold each other and collectively cry into our tear-stained pillows every night? BUT if these liars are determined to call our beloved a romcom, then here is my list of meta moments from the show that genuinely made me cackle. (Or the one time when most of my post commentary consists of WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING HERE?!!)

EP1 - Kid with pursed lips out here breaking hearts and taking prisoners.

This is SUCH a Pat thing to do so how much do I love that they let young Pran steal the scene? You know this grated young Pat sooooo BAD making it THAT much more funny. He probably lost sleep over it. And the pursed duck lips really puts it over the top for me. Who even raised you, you little gremlin? Not prim and proper, never a hair out of place, Dissaya and Mr. I Must Listen to Classical Music While I Eat Dad? While hilarious, what I love most about this is how we learn that Pat received it as good as he gave. Pran was no pushover even at the gremlin-age.

EP2 - Sighting: Man with framed picture of himself next to bed in case he forgets what he looks like.

Why, show, why? This is clearly a picture of Nanon and NOT Pran. Why didn’t they use a family photo of him with his parents or even a baby picture? Why use what’s obviously a modeling picture of their lead actor here? For a show that lives and dies in the details, this is just lazy staging. But what's truly hilarious is the pose, is Pran supposed to be giving himself a come hither look here? Like, is that what's happening every morning when he opens his eyes and the last thing he sees each night? A picture of himself seducing himself???😂😂😂

EP5 - Love Sign #2: Make eyes with your intended while wild horse neighs in background.

This is more of an audio than a visual take, but why is there a horse sound effect when Pat tries to make eyes with Ink??? LMAO. Is Pat meant to be a “stallion” in this scenario? I laughed SO HARD at this. Is this the soundtrack of Pat’s life? Like, what is even happening here? Does he just walk around campus with barnyard animal sounds following him around in his head? What does he need to be doing to hear a cow's moo??? 🐄🐮🐮🐄 You know what? On second thought, I don’t even want to know.

EP6 - BroTip: Prepare for possible gang jumping by pushing up sleeveless sleeves.

My first viewing of this scene had me going HAHAHA!!! Or as Ohm (and all of Thailand) would say 555555!!! What is even happening here? Pat, why, no, just why. And then they add the intense music in the background too? P’Aof and co. were totally trolling us right? There can’t be any other explanation. How many of the crew members struggled to keep a straight face during this filming? And poor Ohm? How many times did he break character laughing just to get through the motions of pushing up sleeves that AREN’T THERE?!! But no, it’s meant to be a serious moment??? I swear with every rewatch even though I know it’s COMING it still takes me out every single time. I keep dying over and over again.

EP9 - Bewildered man attacked by missing armhole in sports jersey.

EP9 - Oishi green tea allowing gays to be footloose and fancy free since 1993?

BRO, what is even happening here? I CRINGED so hard at this scene and the level of secondhand embarrassment is more than my burning face and ears can handle. Was P’Aof like: hey guys we have to insert this product placement here, so I want you to just go out there and sell it but reallllly mean it. And this was what Ohm and Nanon came up with?? AND P’Aof was like, great job, but can you really try selling it this time? I need more jazz hands. Maybe add the arm wave too? Ohm, I love you but no, just no.

EP9 - Man with tiny gun threatens a weaseling Waisel.

I get that this is a low-stakes show and the whole point of the gun thread was to move the narrative along and get the parents involved, but c’mon this was the best gun the prop team could come up with??? The whole thing is smaller than the dude’s palm. Like, he can barely get the tip of his trigger finger in there??? And now it looks like it’s stuck?? LMAO. I know this was meant to be an OH NO BIG BAD THING IS HAPPENING HERE but the entire thing was just so cartoonishy COMICAL to me. And why even stop there? Dude might as well be twirling an oversized moustache while he’s pointing that tiny gun.😂😂😂

EP9 - Man who thinks he has moves like Jagger, but in fact, very much does not. (Don’t tell him.)

This is such a difficult scene to capture a screenshot of but you all KNOW which scene I’m talking about. In the middle of a brawl involving a tiny gun, Pat decides he’s inside the matrix and can dodge fists and limbs so gets up from the ground like THIS. Whyyyyyy, Pat? Just pull yourself up like a normal person. BE NORMAL dude, it’s not that difficult. Okay, maybe for you it is. Pfft.

EP10 - Tough gangster tries to impress high school kids with velcro wallet.

Pat whips out his wallet and we hear the sccrreeeech of velcro when he opens it and I die (again) of abject horror via secondhand embarrassment. These boys look up to you Pat, can you not embarrass me like this? What 20-something college sophomore carries around a velcro wallet??? And why is Pran just standing there okay with all of this? You have ONE job, Pran. To rein in or at least slow down Pat’s buffoonery. He's not helping himself in that area. And the man’s got a reputation to uphold.😩😩😭😭

EP12 - TFW: I wish I had more middle fingers to give.

The high school flashback scene where Pat and Pran are flipping each other off reminded me so much of that viral gif of the two guys who were so uh, passionate about giving each other the middle finger they each had to have the final say even AFTER crossing the friggin’ street! If you haven’t seen it yet, watch it below. It is SO STUPIDLY HILARIOUS. And I could totally see Pat and Pran doing this back in high school. Only they live next door to each other so they’d race up to their rooms to continue the middle finger fight from their windows and IT WOULD NEVER END.😂😂😂

a continuation of this post, aka autistic himbo wille my utter beloved - also Wille in this au uses neopronouns! If you want an in-depth explanation of which pronouns they use you can look at Kai’s @purplehoodiesimon post here

Wille’s room in the Eriksson’s household is a visual representation of who they are, posters and pictures and pride flags hanging on every surface inch. A bed covered in stuffed animals and a nest of blankets bought by sol’s friends and Simon. It’s all soft lights from the glow-in-the-dark planets and stars that litter the ceiling and LEDs strung on the walls.

Space and stars are prevalent in the entire room, Linda having wanted to make sure moon’s room truly reflected who they were as a person, and not just the manufactured son Kristina had so carefully put together. And Wille loves space. They know every fact and tidbit about the universe and will tell anyone who will listen everything. They’ve told Simon every fact, Sara every thought, Linda every article they’ve ever read on the subject.

Sports posters also line the walls, the other facet of moon’s life on display as well. Athletes from all genres, stickers graciously added by Simon covering the corners and the empty spaces around the figures. Because according to Simon having sweaty men and Polaroids of the two of them kissing on sol’s walls didn’t signal that Wille was gay enough. Moon loved every addition.

It’s so drastic, Wille’s room at the Eriksson’s, from their room at their mother’s home. There it was all white walls, made beds and blank faces. When Simon slept over for the first time in eighth grade he called it a hospital room and Wille agreed. There, Wille was the proper son who didn’t have trouble understanding people, the boy his mother expected him to be and not the one who’d get overwhelmed with noises and crowds. There, Wille was Wilhelm, the boy who’s good at sports and nothing else. It was miserable.

So when Linda offered to let Wille stay at her home, to live with her and her family, Wille took the opportunity and ran. Sol basically loved there anyways, always somewhere in Simon’s room whenever Erik would FaceTime them, no matter the time he would call. And Linda doesn’t care that Wille and Simon are together, she just wanted to take them in, wanted to provide Wille with actual love and nurture, not just a dinner every couple of days and stilted conversations.

So Wille’s room is their happy space; a visual representation of the life they now have, surrounded by the people who care for star. Able to flourish and be themselves.

10 Queer as Fuck webtoons worth your time!

In light of the recent "B*yfriends" related controversy, I decided to compile a list of my favorite LGBT centric comics! The main conflict in all of these comics is related to being queer, and it plays a central role in the story!

Short Disclaimer: Some of these comics are not finished, and some I haven't fully caught up with yet! Please do not hold me accountable for the content of the comics.

1) Idiots don't catch colds. (MLM, bi/adhd protag) It's if haikyuu was actually canonically gay. It's my top read comic on webtoon. I've read it over 600 times. I wish I was joking.

2) Plain boy & Prince. (MLM gay protag(s)) A parody of romance comics that actually is a really cute romance comic in and of itself.

3) Kiss it Goodbye. (WLW lesbian protag(s)) A heartwarming comic about two girls coming to terms with their sexualities (it's complete!)

4) Blades of Furry. (MLM furry comic) It's by Deya Muniz. It's an ice skating comic and it's cute! I'm not a furry but I enjoy this comic nonetheless and you will too!

5) High Class Homos. (WLW + MLM) Most similar to boyfriends. Pretty much every sexuality and identity is represented here.

6) To Be Ordinary! (Trans love interest + Neurodiverse/Disabled protag) It's interesting so far, but it does depict transphobes bullying the trans character so content warning for that.

7) Mage & Demon Queen. (WLW main characters) It's written by a lesbian woman, and while it leans more Yuri and it's a bit more raunchy than your average romance comic, it's still really good and I usually end up throwing my phone at least once per episode lol.

8) I want to be a cute anime girl. (Trans Protag) It's about a trans girl who is slowly coming out to her friends and family and learning how to deal with the awkward conversations. (Honestly it's really cute lol)

9) Not So Shoujo Love Story. (WLW bi protag) A lesbian comedy comic that is a parody of Shoujo stories. When I say comedy, I mean comedy. It's mostly comedy with a little bit of romance thrown in. But when the romance is thrown in, it hits so hard. I almost cried reading this comic.

10) Unwritten Death. (Pan protag, Genderfluid love interest) A boy with the power to see spirits finally meets the god of death and must help them in order to save spirits. (Also just because Death is bored and likes to talk.) It's really just started, so I have no idea where it is going to be honest, but it's cute so far.
