In this lovely productive garden by the sea the annual Pisum sativum (garden pea) are producing a good crop. Peas are such a tolerant crop there are several types with those for shelling, as well as mangetout and sugarsnap. The plants come in various sizes with tall varieties that reach 1.8m to dwarf varieties of just 45cm.

The Pea (Pisum sativum) was one of the first crops to be domesticated, meaning it is one of the first crops that allowed Neolithic humans in the now Middle East and Southwest Asia to stay in one place, put down literal roots, and begin an agricultural life rather than a nomadic one. Some say Peas appeared in the Barley and Emmer fields, and were welcomed into the cropping systems as they staved off human hunger and also fed the soil with their nitrogen-fixing collaborations with the microbes in their root nodules. Peas Porridge (made from the dried pea seeds) fed many of our ancestors. It wasn't until the 17th century that European elites started breeding and eating green, fresh, whole Peas, pods and all - and later they trickled down to the rest of us. Anyways, as usual, I'm grateful to all our ancestors who teased and nurtured the amazing foods we eat from the wild and shaped them gradually into even tastier morsels.
