The Sims 4: Medieval Save
Tumblr media
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Medieval Save is finally here!
This has been an ongoing project which many Simmers from all across the world were apart of and we turned nearly 19 worlds from the game into medieval kingdoms. I've always been a fan of medieval fantasy as well as The Sims Medieval and so this save was born.
A few things to take note of:
* Due to the previous placements of some lots in destination worlds, a bug caused them to became unplayable. It is now fixed (as well as a few other things) and I kindly ask you to re-download the save and delete all previous versions (uploaded before 13 March 2023).
* This is not meant to be a historically accurate save and not all worlds can be considered "medieval". For example Oasis Springs was turned into Ancient Egypt and StrangerVille was turned into a Native-American world and there are many fantasy creatures in the save. Also, The Sims is a very modern game and we had to work with what we have. I guess it would've been more accurate to name it Historical Fantasy Save or something along those lines, but the main theme has always been medieval.
* It requires nearly all the packs and is quite a big file. I didn't want to restrict people's creativity and we don't have many medieval looking items in the game. I recommend lowering your graphics if you have a lower end PC and note that you might have many bald, nude Sims and missing build objects if you're missing packs.
* It doesn't add any new gameplay, though it could change how you play the game. Almost all modern appliances are removed and most lots are off-the-grid. This is not a mod and thus I couldn't add things like swordfighting or things that would make the save more immersive. Luckily there are many mods out there that could help with that.
* Some Sims with royal titles have longer names and editing them in CAS will force you to shorten their name. If you wish to edit them, you can shorten their name in CAS and just re-add their titles with MCCC in live mode.
* NPC Sims/townies will continuously spawn with modern clothing by the game's design. You can either delete them as they spawn, give them medieval makeovers or edit them in CAS and replace them with medieval Sims from the Gallery. There are some tutorials on YouTube which could help with this, like this video by KatsCorner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPsxmGk92M4

Ariadne and why the Mycenaeans can fuck right off
Warning: Includes brief mentions of r*pe, cultural destruction, ancient patriarchy reminding us why no woman would ever time-travel more than 5 years into the past if that and a great deal of spite for male historians/public education history/mythology classes.
Possible side effects may include a sudden intense rage for an ancient society equivalent to the innate rage one has for the Romans burning the library of Alexandria, a distinct hatred for ancient men not being able to let anyone have nice things, and a sudden fascination for Minoa.
Usually, I stick to writing imagines and being happy with that. It’s fun! I love it! But every now and again, in an attempt to escape the crushing forces known as reality and responsibilities I’ll put on a few cutscenes from games I’m: A) Too lazy to play B) Too broke to play C) Too unskilled to play D) All of the above
because cutscenes are free and why torture yourself with impossible levels when its free on Youtube?* *In all seriousness please support video games and video game creators, but no shame to those of us who prefer cutscenes to gameplay.  A few weeks ago I added the game Hades made by Supergiant to the list because the cutscenes were bomb and the characters are so much fun! Intricate as all hell! Hella cute too but that’s unrelated! Now my pretty little simp patootie is especially a big fan of Dionysus and his gorgeous design so the cutscenes with him are my favorite.
I’m re-watching his cutscenes a few nights ago for fun as background when he has a certain line about Theseus. Don’t quote me on this since my memory is foggy at best but roughly it was: Dionysus: Good job with Theseus. Never cared much for him- what he did to that girl was just horrible.*
*I know that’s not his exact line but this is clearly a rant post fueled by spite and ADD-hyper-focused obsessions with ancient civilizations so let’s not worry too too much about the semantics here.
Now, I like mythology! Personally, I prefer the Norse mythology due to the general lack of very very gross dynamics that several other ancient mythologies seem to include, but I’m decently familiar with Greek mythos. Enough to go - “Why does the God of Wine give a single fuck about the frat bro of Greek heroes being a dick to a woman? Grossness is embedded into the very DNA of all distant relatives of Zeus, a woman being harassed by Zeus or his bastard army is a typical Tuesday in ancient Greece.”
Wikipedia confirms that Ariadne is the only woman in the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, which I kinda knew already so unless Theseus did some f’ed up shit to some other princess of Minos, Dionysus could only be referring to her. Disregarding what I know about Wikipedia and how it can suck you down the rabbit hole of rabbit holes through sheer fury I stupidly clicked the link to Ariadne’s article.
By the time we get to the end of this shitstorm, I will have two separate plotlines for two separate stories based of Ariadne, 2k+ notes (and going) on an ancient civilization prior to a week ago I didn’t know existed and within me there will be a rage towards a different ancient civilization I vaguely recall learning about in high school.
Here’s how this shit went down.
First of all, apparently after Theseus abandoned Ariadne on an island to die (yep! He did that! To the one person who is the only reason he defeated the minotaur! Fuck this guy.) there are multiple storylines where Dionysus takes a single look at Ariadne and falls in love.
“A god falls in love?” you say, aware of how most love stories in Greek mythos can be summed up with Unfortunately, Zeus got horny and Hera is a firm believer in victim blaming. “This poor woman is about to go through hell!” I thought so too! And in one variation of the story, Dionysus does his daddy proud by being an absolute tool to Ariadne. In the majority though? He woos the fuck out of her, and ultimately marries her by consent!
Her consent!
In ancient Greece!
The party dude of the Greek pantheon knows more about consent then his father and modern day frat brothers!
Okay! That’s interesting, so I keep reading.
Ariadne getting hitched to Dionysus is a big deal in Olympus, to the point of getting a crown made of the Aurora Borealis from Aphrodite who is bro-fisting Dionysus, beyond glad she didn’t have to give him the talk about consent. The rest of the gods are pissy especially Hera who doesn’t like Dionysus much since he is the son of Zeus and Semele but they don’t do much. Ariadne ascends to godhood, becomes the goddess of Labyrinths with the snake and bull as her symbol and that’s that on that.
Colorin, colorado, este cuento se acabado.  And they lived happily ever after. That’s the end of the post right?
NO! Because curiosity has made me their bitch and there’s more to this calling me.
Also, I was pissed! Still am! Why the fuck-a-doodle-do did I have to learn about the time Poseidon r*ped a priestess instead of the arguably healthiest relationship in the entirety of the pantheon? Why is Persephone and Hades’ story (which has improved since it was first written and I like more modern versions of it, no hate) the only healthy-ish Greek love story I had to learn when Dionysus and Ariadne were right there? The rage of having endured several grade levels of “Zeus got horny and Hera found out” stories in the nightmare of public education led me to keep looking into this.
There’s this wonderful Youtube channel called Overly Sarcastic Productions that I highly recommend that delves a lot into mythology, and I have seen their bombass video about Dionysus and how his godhood has changed since he was potentially first written in a language we comprehend.
Did ya’ll know this man is the heir apparent to Zeus? ‘Cause I didn’t know that!
YEA! Dionysus, man of parties, king of hangovers and inducer of madness, is set to inherit the throne of Olympus! Ariadne didn’t husband up the God of Wine, she husbanded up the Prince of Olympus and heir apparent to the throne! Holy shit! No wonder some of the gods were against her marriage to Dionysus - can you imagine the drama of an ex-mortal woman sitting on the Queen’s throne of Olympus? Hera must have been pissed.
BUT WAIT.
There’s more.
The reason we know Dionysus is a very important god and is possibly even more important than we think is because of a handy-dandy language known as Linear B, otherwise known as the language of the Mycenaeans!
For those of you fortunate enough to have normal hobbies and interests, the Mycenaeans were the beta version of the Greeks. Their written language of Linear B is one of, if not the first recorded instance of a written Indo-European language. This language, having been translated, gives us an interesting look at what the Greek gods were like back in their beta-stages before they fixed the coding and released the pantheon.
Interesting side facts of the Mycenaean Greek gods include:
Poseidon being the head god with an emphasis on his Earthquake aspect, and being much more of a cthonic god in general.
Take that Zeus, for being so gross.
The gods in general being more cthonic, as Mycenaeans were obsessed with cthonic gods (probably due to all the earthquakes and natural disasters in Greece and Crete at that time)
Several of the gods and goddesses that we know being listed, alongside some that we don’t consider as important (Dione)
The first mention of Kore, later Persephone, but no Hades because since a lot of gods were cthonic, there would be no need for one, specific cthonic god to represent the majority of death-related rituals.
That’s not what we’re focusing on though! What we’re focusing on is a specific translated portion of Linear B that we have. One of the translated portions of Linear B that for the life of me I can’t find (someone please help me find it and send the link so I can edit this post) says an interesting phrase. “Honey to the gods. Honey to the Mistress of Labyrinths.”
One more time. “Honey to the gods. Honey to the Mistress of Labyrinths.”
Mistress of Labyrinths.
Now wait a gosh darn minute. Isn’t there a goddess of labyrinths in the Greek mythos? Why yes! Yes there is! Ariadne!
Here’s a question for you. If Ariadne is but a minor god in the pantheon, a wife to a more predominant god, why is it that while all the other gods and goddesses are bunched together in a sentence of praise, the so-called ex-mortal gets a whole-ass sentence to herself singing praises?
And thus, we have arrived to Minoa!
What is Minoa, you ask? Minoa is to Rome what Rome is to us. An old-ass civilization either older than or younger by a hundred years to ancient Egypt. Egypt, that started in 3200 B.C-ish depending on who you ask. That’s old. Old as balls. They were contemporaries to their trading partner, Egypt until 1450 BC-ish. A 2000 year old civilization.
Minoa was founded on the island of Crete, and was by what artifacts we have found a merchant civilization with its central economy centered on the cultivation of saffron and the development of bronze/iron statues of bulls. Most of what we know about them comes from artifacts and frescoes found on Crete that managed to survive everything else I will mention later, but what matters is that we know a few things about them.
Obsessed with marine life for some time, given their pottery.
Had the first palaces in all of Europe, some of them ridiculously big.
Wrote in Linear A and Cretan Hieroglyphs, both still untranslated languages.
Had a ritual involving jumping over a bull, for some reason.
Firm believers in “Suns out, Tits out.”
You’d think I’m kidding on the last one but no! No no no! All the women apparently rocked the tits-out look in Minoa!
Tumblr media
^^^^One of many, many Minoan works featuring women giving their titties fresh air. ^^^^
“Wait a second Pinks! What does this have to do with Ariadne being the Mistress of labyrinths?”
Well you see dear wonderful darling, while we know very little about Minoan religion because Mycenaeans (we will get to those bastards in a second), we do know this:
All the religious figures appear to be exclusively women.
The most important figures of their religion seem to be goddesses as there are few artifacts featuring male gods.
Because of the religion, the culture may have been an equal society or even a matriarchy! Historians who are male aren’t sure.
A frankly ridiculous amount of their temples, including the ones in caves in the middle of fuck-all feature labyrinths. A lot of labyrinths!
Their head god is a goddess! Whose temples have labyrinths and whose main symbols are snakes and bulls. Who do we know is a) the mistress of labyrinths and b) is symbolized a lot by snakes and bulls?
ARI-fucking-ADNE THAT’S WHO!
Ariadne didn’t upgrade by marrying the prince of Olympus! Dionysus wifed up possibly the most important goddess in all of Crete and becoming her boy-toy!
I’m not even kidding, most Minoan depictions of the goddess’ consort features a boy/man who cycles through the stages of death. Dionysus himself in several myths goes through the same cycle - life, being crushed, death, rebirth, repeat.  Cycles the consort goes through in Minoan legend depictions too!
Okay, that’s great, but what does that have to do with the Mycenaeans? Why do you want to single-handedly go back in time and strangle the beta-Greeks with the nearest belt?
Everything I just said about Ariadne being a Minoan goddess, the Mistress of Labyrinths being hella important on Minoa, is all theoretical. The Mycenaeans are partially to blame for making it theoretical.
Minoa thrived for 2000 years but it had a lot of issues, mostly caused by natural disasters. Towards the end of their civilization (1500 BC-ish), the nearby island of Thera, today known as Santorini, decided to blow up. The island was a hella-active volcano that when erupted, destroyed a lot.
How big was the eruption? Well when Pompeii was wasted by Mt. Vesuvius, the blast was heard from roughly 120 miles away, 200 km.
The blast on Thera was heard from 3000 miles away. 4800 km away.
Fuck me, the environmental effects of the explosion were felt in imperialistic CHINA.
Holy shit that would waste anybody! And it did! Minoa went from being a powerhouse in the Mediterranean to scrambling to recover from losing 40,000 citizens and who knows how many cities. Tsunamis may have followed the blast, further destroying ports which for a navy-powerhouse of an island nation is a bad thing and the theorized temperature drops caused by a cloud of ash lingering for a while would have destroyed crops for the year.
Minoa was fucked.
The Mycenaeans and all their bullshit made it worse.
Up until a few hundred years prior to Thera’s explosion, Minoan artifacts don’t depict much in terms of military power. Why would it? Crete is a natural defense post. Sheer cliffs, high mountains and a few semi-fortified areas would make it pointless to invade. It’s only when the Mycenaeans in all their bullshit decided to attack/compete that Minoa really needed any army to speak of.
Guess who decided to invade while Minoa was reeling from an incredibly shitty year? Mycenaea!
Guess who won?
Also Mycenaea!
Nobody knows how this shit went down though because wouldn’t you know it, the Mycenaeans in all their superiority-complex glory decided to destroy most written accounts about Minoa, a good junk of the temples and culturally eliminated most of Minoan beliefs.
Minoa isn’t even the real name of the civilization! It’s just the name Arthur Evans, the guy who re-motivate interest in Minoan archaeology, gave to the civilization because the writings that would have included the name of the civilization were destroyed.
“That sucks!” Fuck yes that sucks! “What does that have to do with Ariadne though?”
Oh ho ho. Strap in because you’re about to be pissed.
Those of us unfortunate enough to be aware of all the bullshit the Christians pulled on the European pagan belief system are familiar with the concept of cultural, religious destruction. There’s a special name for it I don’t know but if I did I would curse it to be absorbed by the horrendous will of fungi.
An example: Christianity was not the most popular of religions amongst the Vikings. A monotheistic religion that is heavily controlled did not strongly appeal to anyone with a pantheon as rad as the Norse one.
In order to appeal to the Vikings, what monks would do is they would write down traditionally Viking stories which up until that point were orally passed down. Beowulf, the story of the most Viking Viking to have every Vikinged, was one of these first stories.
However! Did these monks write Beowulf as closely to the original oral transcript as possible? Of course not! They took liberties! While Norse features such as trolls and dragons and all sorts of Norse magic occur, there is a lot of Christian features added in.
This happened across all Pagan religions that Christianity came into contact with in Europe. Stories would be altered when written down to be more Christian (this happened to the Greek Pantheon too btw), holidays that were Pagan magically lined up with ones the Vatican just happened to suddenly have. Even names of mythological figures were taken and added onto Christian figure names. Consequently, a lot of pagan religions they did this to got erased over time, with many of their traditions and details being lost forever, and the details we do know being tinted by Christianity.
The Mycenaeans were likely no different.
Minoa and Mycenaea were as culturally opposite as can be. Minoa is theorized to be a matriarchal or equal society*. Mycenaea and most of early Greece absolutely was not. In fact, during early stages of their religion where they believed in reincarnation, the Mycenaeans believed the worst thing to come back as was a woman.
Did you get that? With your options ranging from man to ever single animal on Earth, a woman was ranked as beneath literal animals in Mycenaean society.
Fuck the Mycenaeans.
* This is not to say Minoa was without fault, as a society that is matriarchal or equal can still have rampant issues such as privilege, classism, racism, sexism and more, but when history has a shortage of civilizations that didn’t treat women like shit, you find yourself rooting for them more.
What do you do then, when you take over a society that is very much the opposite of a nightmare of a patriarchy? You fold their beliefs into your own to bait them into yours. Going back to the Linear B line about “Mistress of Labyrinths” that line would/could have been an early tactic of incorporating Minoan belief into Mycenaean belief. Other goddesses and gods were made into aspects of Mycenaean gods. Bristomartis, the Minoan goddess of the hunt, would become Artmeis. Velchanos, a god of the sky, would become Zeus.
With more time, the religion shifted more into Mycenaean and eventually into ancient Greece as we know it. Through trade other gods and goddesses would continue to shift and change, some being straight up imported (Aphrodite for example). Dionysus himself changed a lot too, going from a God representing freedom and attracting slaves, women and those with limited power into his cult, to a God of parties for the wealthy.
Theseus and the Minotaur was a myth likely based on a Mycenaean myth based on a Minoan myth that changes Ariadne from an important, possibly the important goddess of an ancient religion and relegates her to a side character in a pantheon so vast that she would be lost within it.
All of this brings us to today. Today, where as soon as work ended I spent most of the day, as well as the past two days, looking up everything I can on Minoan civilization and added it to my notes. Spite is fueling me to write two possible different stories for two different fandoms where Minoa dunks of Mycenaea and it is giving me life. Expect an update within the next two weeks folks as I lose control of my writing life once more.
In summary: Ariadne deserves more respect, fuck the public education system for skipping over the good parts of Greek mythology instead of the r*pey as shit parts, the Mycenaeans can eat my shorts, and a world were Minoa became the predominant power instead of Greece would be an amazing world to live in.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. Pink out.

An intriguing tale takes place in Cleopatra’s Egypt, set around a secret society called the Order of Ancients, plotting to control the throne. The story involves abductions, murders and battles, and the main characters must decipher messages and codes hidden in hieroglyphics.
Welcome to Assassin’s Creed Origins, the tenth episode in Ubisoft’s blockbuster role-play video game series, hailed for its realistic scene setting and engaging gameplay.
The designers engaged experts so they could include genuine hieroglyphics in the gameplay – and found it was a painstaking process.
“While working on the game with Egyptologists, we’ve realised how difficult it is to unlock the secrets of that time,” says Ubisoft Project co-ordinator, Pierre Miazga.
The Rosetta Stone, captured in 1799 during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, was key to deciphering hieroglyphs; but that slow process has not changed much in over 200 years.
Ubisoft decided to use their expertise to help create a machine learning tool to translate ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and last year launched The Hieroglyphics Initiative, and put out an international call for scholars to help.

The Egyptian artefacts in Kamilah’s office
Tumblr media
1) Ramses II figurine For display    Ramses II, known as Ramses the Great, was the greatest pharaoh of the 19th Dynasty during the New Kingdom. He was one of the most powerful pharaohs who lived over 90 years and ruled for 66 years (1292-1186 BCE) This figurine has the same image with ‘The Younger Memnon’ grey granite monumental statue of Ramses II which weighs 7.25 tons and is housed in the British museum.
2) The Khopesh A bronze sickle sword    The Khopesh is a hybrid between a sword and an axe. Two of them were found in King Tutankhamun’s treasure. The one on Kamilah’s shelf is made of bronze which means that it might actually come from around the period when King Tutankhamun, one of the most famous pharaohs, reigned (read more about King Tut at No.7)
3) Goddess Bastet Mask For display    Bast, one of the most popular goddesses of ancient Egypt, was depicted as a woman with a head of a cat. She was a goddess of dance and music and a destroyer of evil. Her sacred animal is cat. Cats decimated the mice population which threatened the food supply of vital grains. Many pharaohs included her depictions on their thrones. Fun fact; cruelty against cats and killing cats was a crime punishable by death.     She was widely worshipped in Lower Egypt. The centre of her cult was her temple at Bubastis which was the capital of ancient Egypt for a time during the Late Period (712-323 BCE)
4) Scented Candle Probably for wax play    Candle can be used to set a sexy and sensual mood 😏 A soy candle is less likely to cause skin irritation. It cools quickly on contact and can be cleaned easily.
5) Eye of Horus vase For display    Horus is the name of a sky god in ancient Egyptian mythology. The “Eye of Horus” is a powerful symbol in ancient Egypt. It was used as a protective amulet in jewellery made of gold, silver, wood, lapis lazuli and porcelain to ensure the safety of the bearers and it was believed to also provide wisdom and prosperity.    The Eye of Horus represents the six senses (touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought) Please see link in Source for illustration and further explanation.
6) Sehkmet faience statue An amulet    Sekhmet, a goddess of war, was usually depicted as a woman who had a head of a lioness. It was believed that she was sent by Ra, the original sun God, to punish humankind at the time when human refused to keep justice and balance in human world.    Sekhmet was the protector of pharaohs and she was the warrior who protected the border of Egypt and she was worshipped in upper Egypt.    Egyptian faience, the oldest known type of glazed ceramic first developed more than 6,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. It has shades of turquoise, blue and green.
7) A photo of a relief of King Tutankhamun and Egyptian gods; Anubis and Nephthys See Source for HD photo
At the age of 9, Tutankhamun became an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty and he continued to rule for 10 years until his death at age 19, around 1324 BCE. Since he had left no heir to the throne, his commander named Horemheb was expected to take his place. However, Ay who was one of King Tut’s servants took the chance to take the throne and tried to wed Tutankhamun’s queen, Anksenamun.     Whether she was forced to remarry Ay or not is unknown. Maybe Ay and Horemheb planned the assasination of Tutankhamun which would explain why his death was so sudden. Not to mention, Horemheb tried very hard to destroy all the evidence that proved Tutankhamun had ever existed. Tutankhamun’s tomb was found in 1922.
Anubis’s popularity spread into other periods because he became associated with the gods of other lands. In the early Christian period, It was likely that Anubis became associated with Charon in Greek mythology. Anubis’s sacred duty included making sure that the body of the dead would be respected, the souls protected in the afterlife and the dead would be judged fairly.
Nephthys, sister of Osiris, Isis, and Seth and the mother of Anubis, was also known as the “Goddess of divine assistance” who helped Isis find and rebuild the body of Osiris.    She represented protective guardianship on multiple levels such as helping the deceased in their journey through the Underworld to the Afterlife.
8) Limestone Stela of Sin, the Moon God in Mesopotamia myth See Source for photo in HD    Sin, the Moon God in Mesopotamian myth was depicted with a classic look of a wise old man with long, epic beard. But that’s not why he was one of the most important deities in the wider pantheon of Mesopotamia.    The horizontal crescent moon is Sin’s signature symbol. The Moon God’s role included his ability to illuminate darkness.
9) Sphinx of Ramses II figurine A figurine that Kamilah uses as a book end    The sphinx, a lion with a human head, represents the power of the Egyptian king, both to protect his people and to conquer the enemies of Egypt.     This figurine is a replica of Sphinx of Ramses II whom we also know as Ramses the Great (19th Dynasty, 1293-1185 BCE) It was originally dedicated to the temple of the god Ptah, consort of Sekhmet, at Memphis in Egypt.
10) Egyptian Fan Axe For display       It was never found by the archaeologist. Evidence suggests that maybe it was newly designed by people of the 21st century. If it really existed in the past, it might have been used in rituals only.

I do not do cosplay, but my sims do now🤣🤣🤣
One sweet person put this idea into my head, saying Han looks like Seth from Ennead manhwa... And the thing is I'm a fan of this manhwa, but did not even notice, because I made Han waaaay longer ago.
I couldn't sleep untill I found the suitable cc and made some minor recolors.
@madfeary, you asked if I could make Horus, so here he is as well as Seth))
And I can't even express how perfect Seth cc set by @sychik is!!! I'm sorry that I had to recolor it to match other Horus' accessories (by @natalia-auditorets4), the default colors are good too, I swear. Thank you for making it!
And it would be wonderful if you could make Horus head thing as well)) With my meager skills I've just managed to recolor the mask from discover university pack.
Hah, I'm going to have so much fun posing them today 😅

Rewriting History: Scriptwriting for Historical Video Games
Tumblr media
There are many stages to video game development, from the initial conceptualization of the core idea to the finishing touches on mechanics and gameplay. Amidst all that, developers have to piece together some semblance of a script to push the player forward. Even if it's not a story-driven game, any dialogue or scripted actions taken are written beforehand.
In most instances, the scriptwriters are hindered only by the direction of the game, but when a game is built around a historical epoch, compiling a script requires a bit more awareness. It's no longer about what fictional characters would say and do in their fantasy world as everything has to match up to the known language of that time. As a player looking for that immersive experience, you wouldn't want to load up a game based around the Mongol Empire and hear characters talking like they're from 21st-century New York. Unless it's a very conscientious choice backed up by coherent in-game events, mismatched dialogue and dialects distract from the experience and come across as lazy.
Perfecting the language for a game set in a real location is part of the world's design. Along with constructing the pyramids of Egypt or the Colosseums of Rome, the development team must consider how people of specific regions spoke in their corresponding times. This is precisely the dilemma Ubisoft faces when it sends players back in time with the Assassin's Creed series. With each new entry, the developer has to consider not only the look and feel of a location but also how its people should sound and talk.
Tumblr media
In Assassin's Creed, there is suitable evidence that Ubisoft often remains true to the local language. "Assassin's Creed Taught Me Italian: Video Games and the Quest for Lifelong, Ubiquitous Learning," published by Dr. Simone Bregni in Profession, discusses how the author used Assassin's Creed II to help teach grammar and vocabulary in his Italian class. "By the third week of the semester, students in an elementary language course have typically learned how to introduce and describe themselves in simple terms," Bregni wrote. While Italian evolved over centuries, the standard form was derived from the Florentine dialect spoken in the Tuscan region where Assassin's Creed II takes place.
Ubisoft Montreal faced a more significant challenge with Assassin's Creed: Origins. Unlike Assassin's Creed II, where the primary language could be pinpointed and recreated, scholars and historians don't know how ancient Egyptians sounded. As director Ashraf Ismail explained in a piece for The Guardian, "We don't know exactly what ancient Egyptian was." He continued, "So we had linguists actually develop a language based on research." We hear in the game a new language based on the works of Sir Alan Gardiner, Raymond Faulkner, and James Allen, which captures what is perceived to be accurate to the region and era.
Going into Origins, Ubisoft Montreal already had practice with dead languages. Far Cry Primal steps back even further in time, to 10,000 BC. Rather than create an entirely new language, a la Game of Throne's Dothraki, Primal's development team turned to experts in the Proto-Indo-European dialect of the late Neolithic era, Andrew and Brenna Byrd. Their understanding of the millennia-old language resulted in slightly different speech for the Wenja, Izila, and Udam tribes that followed many of the known rules of Proto-Indo-European. Since it was intended to be older, however, the Byrds dubbed their creation "proto-Proto-Indo-European."
Though it is common, not all languages in historical video games have to be inferred from unknown vernaculars. Ensemble Studios' Age of Empires II focused on an array of different civilizations and cultures, from the Britons to the Japanese. Just as architecture and unique units change between the playable factions, Ensemble designed the civilizations to have differing (and mostly accurate) in-game dialogue. Since cultures progress through four ages spanning 1,000 years, some liberties needed to be taken with languages used. For instance, Japanese troops speak modern Japanese universally despite modern Japanese not surfacing until the 17th to 19th centuries.
Tumblr media
We don't even have to go that far back in time to see how scriptwriters and developers handled language progression. Play through Red Dead Redemption 2 and you won't find references to words or phrases born out of the 21st century. Dutch van der Linde wasn't "thirty" for money, and he wasn't "finna" to rob any trains for it because those definitions weren't added into the dictionary until 2020.
What's most interesting about language is that it's a living form of communication. That is, it's always changing. A game set in the 1980s may require a different approach to dialogue than one that takes place in the 1970s. Just because a game occupies a more modern age doesn't mean the writer doesn't have to worry about how the dialogue sounds or what words are used. The next time you're playing a game set in a different generation, pay attention to the script. How does it differ from how people speak today? If handled properly, a game's script should add authenticity, especially if it's trying to capture the spirit of a specific period or depict a civilization long-since gone.

Progress Report - Old World
I’m sitting here trying to remember the names of my Roman rulers in my first run of Old World. There was Romulus, of course. A decent enough ruler, didn’t make too many waves. His brother Remus hated his guts, of course, and I was waiting for the moment when he’d rise up against me. History doesn’t depict their relationship as a happy one, after all. Fortunately, Old World diverged from history and Remus became a renowned general. He was still angry but not quite enough to justify fratricide.
Romulus died and his son took the throne, then when that son died their daughter took the throne. And so on and so on. There must always be a bottom on the throne, after all. These leaders all ruled slightly differently but the core message was the same. Pump out techs, expand our borders and throw money at anyone that looks at me with a frown on their face. The three main prongs of empire building, though at the moment Old World has a lot of work to do on its late game.
Tumblr media
I imagine the first thing people will do when they boot up Old World is compare it to Civilization. It’s a pretty fair comparison, to be honest. You start by picking a real life leader from history. The roster’s a little basic at the moment but each leader plumbs for different things. I initially started with Rome, as a homage to my love for them in Civilization, but have drifted over to Babylonia. They have more of a science focus, which suits me a little better.
The basic gameplay structure is core 4X. You plonk down your cities and grow your population, pumping out settlers when you’re ready to expand. Make a couple of scouts to map the place and a horde of warriors and archers to prevent your neighbours from getting any funny ideas. And funny ideas they will have as cities can only be founded on specific city tiles. These are limited, and snapped up pretty quick by barbarians, so if you don’t aggressively expand then you’ll be quickly outmatched.
I was in two minds how much I liked this mechanic but, thinking about it, I really do like it. It forces conflict. My attitude in most 4X games is just to pay my enemies to look the other way while I peacefully coast towards a science victory. In this case, holding back means you can’t expand your empire, so you constantly have to push your relations. In my run as Egypt, I had to declare war on the Gauls - a tribe that acts as a sort of mini-player - despite good relations. They had scooped up a lot of the city points in the area and I desperately needed to expand so I could hold my own against the encroaching Greeks.
Tumblr media
Not only that, but politics is a bit more delicate affair than in your average 4X. It bats a bit closer to Crusader Kings’ domain, more than anything. Not only do you have constantly changing figureheads of other countries to look out for, but you have your own families too. Each leader has four families and you can tie cities (and subsequent units) to these families. If you piss them off, they’ll work to bring you down but, of course, they’re all against each other. It’s one hell of a juggling act and it usually needs a fair bit of gold - and compromises - to appease everyone. Or you could just assassinate your dissenters. That’s good too.
Politics gets even more muddled when it comes to other leaders. You could spend your whole time buttering up a leader only for them to suddenly die next year, leaving their daughter - who hates you - to inherit the throne. A lot of these interactions come through scripted events, which can really turn things on their head. They also tie into the stats and traits of your chosen leader, meaning you can build up a proper socialite and get out of quite a few sticky situations. The more you dig into Old World, the deeper it gets.
There is a limit though and it hits like a freight train in the second half. See, being in early access most of the big stuff isn’t in play yet - the biggest one being the victories. At the moment there’s just two: score and ambitions. Score is your usual default victory, while the ambition victory has you completing ten different missions. As victories go, it’s rather dull and means the second half is spent working towards things like building six of a set building or upgrading ten units. It lacks the tension of a technological arms race, for example.
Tumblr media
Another potential sticking point is that Old World has grounded itself in a specific point in history. A time when the best weapons available were swords, axes and longbows. That means the tech tree is quite stunted, without many exciting things to look forward to. Once you get your strongest units - which frequently is around the middle of the game - then you just need a sturdy standing army to do alright. Granted, it seems to be expanding more and more with updates but it’s another thing that tends to drop off quite quickly, leaving the end game a little bare.
Still, I remember that being a problem with Civilization V and VI when they first came out. Must be a common 4X hurdle and Old World still has a lot of time left to fix these things. They’re still putting in animations and textures after all. One thing at a time. But the early access version has a lot of promise, as well as a good bit of depth already there. Once it’s cooked to perfection we will definitely have a Civilization rival on our hands. Long live the glory of Babylonia! Things That Are Working -Politics is a treat -The city building angle is great -Captures the perfect 4X feeling -Succession is fun and has good depth to it Things That Need Work -The end game is very stale -The tech tree has few gems to look forward to Old World Developer: Mohawk Games Early Access Date: May 5th 2020 Play it on: Windows

Samantha Farley’s Fall 2019 blog for ARTM 3101 Digital Media 2
The game I am reviewing for this blog is Assassin’s Creed Origins. It has an ESRB rating of M and I played it on the Xbox 1. In Assassin’s Creed Origins you play as an assassin and progress through a storyline. The first thing you do in the game is fighting someone as a tutorial to show you how you are going to attack enemies throughout the rest of the game. I thought this was a neat way to give a new player the tutorial but keep the interest of people who have played the previous games. It is also helpful because the gameplay is slightly different than how it was in the earlier Assassin’s Creed games. After that, you are led into the first part of the main questline. After you complete the first quest you are free to go to other areas and complete quest in whichever order you would like.
I like open-world games because there is a lot to explore and there is more freedom to chose how you would like to play the game. I have not played many recent games so this is the largest map I have had in a game so far. I appreciated this because I have always been interested in Ancient Egypt and this game gives a feel of what it could have looked like.
In the beginning, I felt rushed into the storyline. I did not adequately get to know the first person you are required to defeat for the tutorial. I have played all the Assassin’s Creed games up to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. I have not played any of the more recent Assassin’s Creed games so I felt a big jump between the game styles.
I liked the main character until the sequence in which you learn he accidentally killed his son when one of the main bosses moved out of the way. After which I had mixed feelings about the character. The whole game you are trying to defeat the people that were responsible for his son’s death and yet he never mentions or addresses his involvement. I like the choice to start right before Cleopatra becomes Pharaoh. This allows a smoother addition of the Assassin’s Creed lore into the history as you are aiding Cleopatra to reclaim the throne from her brother. It also allows them to add all of the famous Egyptian monuments that people would like to see that might not have been built had they chosen a different period. I noticed a few side activities you can do in the game is to explore the Egyptian tombs which is a nice inclusion.
I think the weakest element in the game is that there are not enough interactions between you and the other characters. Through speech, you can get a general idea of the existing relationships but there is not enough to link that with the player. The main character has existing relationships with other characters but there are not enough interactions to make the actual player have those same feeling towards them.
The game keeps the player interested by introducing a problem and leaving you with the need to resolve the issue. The atmosphere of the game is nice the game uses a lot of dulled sandy colors and even includes sandstorms and plants related to the geographical area.
For my own game, I want to focus on creating an immersive and believable world and focus on the interactions with other characters to help build the story and player-character relationships.
I thought the graphics were really good considering the time this game came out. Sometimes when my character is riding the mount the clothing movements resets and allows you to see the mesh while not riding a mount the clothing is very believable.
The ambient sound and audio in the game is great and helps create the feel of Egypt. I dislike the sound that plays during battle sequence because it is a little repetitive. Especially, when you are taking your time and playing stealthily through an area. The music is also more similar to the music in the recent Assassin’s Creed movie than the other Assassin’s Creed games which I don’t think appeals to their main audience.
I think the game was made to include a broader audience because more people will be attracted to the game because of the Egyptian aspect of it that might not be as familiar with the previous games. I think this game did a great job on recreating Ancient Egypt in a large open map that would be interesting for a lot of people. I also like the detail that they put into recreating the cities and monuments that people are most interested in. I noticed parallels between what was included in the game and the things I have learned in various history courses. I think most of the games in this series have all had some kind of historical aspect to the game and that’s what makes this series so appealing.

First Impressions of Assassins Creed: Origins
Years ago I gave up on the Assassins Creed series after Assassins Creed: Brotherhood. Most people claimed that it was one of the high point for the series for a while. I didn’t care much for the game personally. I found the character of Ezio to be dull and uninteresting, it was also the beginning of the series becoming an annual release from Ubisoft. After that point the series struggled to keep the gameplay fresh and over the years the overarching story became more unhinged and ridiculous, full of aliens, gods, templars, and mind control. The series hit a new high point when they went on a huge risk and made an Assassins creed game unlike any other, one in which you play as a pirate who is fairly removed from the messy narrative of the games before it. The AC audience loved the new style of gameplay and the innovation that was brought to the series, breathing new life into the stale format. after putting out a few more unremarkable games, Ubisoft surprised everyone when they announced they were going to stop putting games out on an annual release schedule. This Time off allowed for Assassins Creed: Origins to become what it is.
Assassins Creed: Origins could have just been a new game with the same format but in a new and very interesting time period as they always have. But with that extra year of dev time, Ubisoft managed to completely redefine what the Assassins Creed series could be going forward.
This time we fill the shoes of Bayek, an Egyptian Medjay (protector of the people/Pharaoh) during Cleopatra’s attempt to take the throne back from her brother Ptolemy. Unlike any previous AC game, this one manages to make me care and even love it’s characters. Bayek is a man who lost his child a year prior to a cult of powerful members of Egypt and he seeks to hunt down those responsible. By setting it a year apart from the death of his child it allows the story to not be consumed in a dark tone. Seeing Bayek having fun with his (very badass) wife, Aya, is very uplifting and sweet.
The gameplay this time is much more like The Witcher 3 and is a fantastic fit for the AC series. Now with leveled enemies and loot there is more of a invitation to explore the map, fight tough enemies, and constantly upgrade Bayek’s abilities. The combat is now much more complex and with the introduction to a variety of weapon types that all feel different, makes the game challenging but possible to master with some patience.
So far I am loving the games pacing, that they are leaving a lot of the narrative baggage behind, and carving out a new and interesting story for the AC series. I Hope this is a learning experience for Ubisoft and they continue to put games out slower with more polish and innovation.
