A Schlachtschwert, early XVIth century.
Spring steel blade of flat hexagonal section for most its length, mild steel fittings with hollow brass ball finials on the cross. Leather over thread over wooden core for the grip, and leather over wood for the sleeve (more about that below).
This is a tentative reconstruction of what a "proper" Landsknecht Greatsword could look like, such a they appear on period artwork, be it paintings like the Siege of Alesia by Melchior Feselen (1533) or the Battle of Pavia kept at the Royal Armouries (or the tapestries depicting that same battle, now at the Museo Capodimonte, made after sketches by Bernard van Orley), the Victory of Charlemagne over the Avars near Regensburg by Albrecht Altdorfer (1518), or the many drawings, prints and woodcuts by artists such as Reinhart von Solms, Jörg Breu, the great Hans Burgkmair, Niklas Stör, Hans Holbein (both Elder and Younger), Virgil Solis, Hans Sebald Beham, the legendary Urs Graf, Daniel Hopfer, Erhard Schön, Hans Schäufelein and others...All of them combined to give this result.
Such swords would be seen not only in the hands of a Doppelsoldner, but also carried by your Feldwaybel or an Edelman.
And it would be called a Schlachtschwert in the very captions of the illustrations I mentioned earlier (see Erhard Schön).
*Not* a "two-handed Katzbalger", though the cross obviously echoes the S/8-shaped guard of the latter.
We clear on that ?
Good.
Very few of such swords are kept in museums out there, with a lot of them leaving me dubious regarding their authenticity. The one in Berlin seems to me to be the most genuine of all, and it is on its proportions that I based this piece, though the Berlin sword shows a fancy, diamond-pattern decoration on the quillions very much recalling the Katzbalger kept in the Museum of London.
Most if not all period illustration do not show such fancy details on the crossguards though ; they are actually rather plain, without even the ribbing/threading/filework you can find on Katzbalger crosses.
Hence I kept this one rather plain, with a square cross section with rounded corners, and some light filework at the center.
I also bent the quillions into an offset 8-shape rather than a symmetrical one, to be more consistant with the earlier examples visible in period artwork.
The main questioning was that sleeve at the base of the blade, present on a lot of the period artwork; its obvious function was to provide a spot on which to put the other hand - as can be deduced from Marozzo's teachings for fighting against polearms - but the main issue was how was it made/what was it made of.
Elaborating on my previous experience and studies of such things on later Schlachtschwerter, I went for a basic construction of leather glued/stitched over a wood core made of two flat slabs, and force-slid down the blade. There is more than enough friction to keep it well in place, but it is still possible to take it off albeit with some effort. The end of the leather is cut according to period artwork, and flares out to accommodate the mouth of a scabbard if needed.
A simple decoration of plain lines on one side, and checkered on the other makes it also consistant with the artwork.
It is 139 cm long, the blade is 1083 mm long, 45 mm wide with a thickness of about 7 mm at its base, tapering down to 3.4 mm near the point.
The span of the crossguard is about 21 cm, though from one ball end to the other there's about 73 cm of steel.
Weight is 2547 grams, point of balance 13.5 cm from the cross.
Twenty-eight hundred EuroUnits and it's yours.

jana nace tercer y última en la familia vila. no recuerda mucho de su infancia. sí que era feliz y que iban de aquí a allá acompañando a su hermana salomé. si tuviera que definirlo de alguna manera, diría que recuerda música y luces artificiales. cosa que no es particularmente mala.
primeros recuerdos vívidos comienzan a los doce años. no se acuerda mucho del cuando le dieron el diagnóstico. solo de su madre llorando y que los reflectores que apuntaban a salo ahora le apuntaban a ella en una sala de hospital. si recuerda el sabor ácido de cuando vomitaba los días después de las quimioterapias. no recuerda esa época con miedo ni tristeza. en el hospital siempre intentaban animarla y adoraba poder salir a ver a salomé actuar o prepararse para algún casting. y también le regaló un poco más de atención de sus padres, cosa que hasta ese momento no sabía que necesitaba. así sucedió durante dos años hasta que le dieron el alta y le aseguraron que estaba curada. claro, con el cáncer nunca se sabe. menos uno tan invasivo como la leucemia. sin embargo esto fue lo que le regaló a jana el darse cuenta lo corta que puede ser la vida, y lo importante que es disfrutarla. conectó muy pequeña con la idea de su propia mortalidad.
fue de adolescente que entendió que sus ganas de vivir, junto con los privilegios que le daba su apellido –no solo por sus padres, sino por su hermana salomé– que entendió que podía hacer prácticamente lo que quisiera con su vida. nada disfruta más que las películas de los noventas y de los principios del dosmil, que fueron las que la acompañaron durante su enfermedad. por lo que a sus dieciséis años decidió que se dedicaría al cine. desde entonces, carga con sigo una handycam con la que graba todo aquello que le llama la atención. se ha ido perfeccionando con el tiempo en la grabación y la edición. esto le permitió entrar sin ningún problema a la escuela de cine en nueva york, participando de rodajes desde su primer año ahí.
creatividad a la hora de filmar y su participación en rodajes conocido le dieron cierto status en las redes sociales, principalmente en tiktok e instagram, aunque ella preferiría que la gente vea más las cosas que hace en youtube, que tienen mucho más de su arte y su impronta. pero sabe que es lo otro lo que le da trabajos en rodajes y canjes interesantes, por lo que en el último tiempo lo ha tomado la creación de contenido sobre cine casi como un trabajo.

Спасибо @rorynameless за отметку! Необычная эстафета - такого я еще не делала, чтобы не про определенный геймплей факты выкатывать, а в общем. Даже пришлось взять паузу и задуматься.
Суть: пишем пять рандомных фактов о своем геймплее и передаем эстафету пяти пользователям Tumblr.
Я люблю, когда мои симы из разных геймплеев пересекаются. Это создает ощущение целостного мира, как будто мои герои живут на некой общей сим планетке. Сейчас у меня две основных вселенных, которые никогда друг с другом не пересекутся: обычная и оккультная. Есть несколько сохранок, которые пока не входят ни в одну. Например, текущий геймлей Free Spirit. По некоторым признакам его можно отнести к оккультной вселенной, так как присутствуют оборотни, поэтому я не исключаю, что Грегу укус Райли как-нибудь аукнется в основном оккультном сохранении, но в истории самого Райли то что он стал оборотнем не главное.
На днях я накидала сюжет для 25го по счету геймплея, но фактически у меня в процессе сейчас 23 (в блоге далеко не все пока что, большая часть переезжает из ts3 и начинается заново). Нет ни одного законченного и не будет, наверное - ненавижу, когда истории заканчиваются и не только мои, поэтому когда-то открытие для себя существования фанфикшена стало моим спасением, чтобы не расставаться с любимыми персонажами))
Из предыдущего пункта вытекат следующий факт: я не умею расставаться со своими главными героями, поэтому династии это не мое, если только это не вампирская династия, где все поколения остаются живы. Я даже придумала себе челлендж, где прямо правилами прописана смена поколений, но в итоге так и застряла на первом.
У меня есть очень странная особенность - я обажаю падать в предистории, поэтому в части моих геймплеев повествование даже еще не дошло до "истинного" главного героя, потому что я застряла на отыгрывании истории его родителей xDD.
Люблю делать всякий графический контент для своих геймплеев (баннеры или заставки с отсылками к поп культуре, играм, мультикам и т.д: a few moments later, таков путь, fatality, все вот это). Особенно баннеры, это прямо уже ритуал. Если у геймплея ещё нет баннера - я не начну его постить.
*это кстати возможно спойлер, потому что Эван пока еще на такой плакат "разыскивается" не попал в отличие от Лондона.

Er zählt zweifellos zu den bedeutenden Historikern der jüngeren Vergangenheit. Und er hat uns gerade hier und heute viel zu sagen: warum es sich für wirklich kritische Zeitgenossen anbietet, Reinhart Koselleck neu zu entdecken.

Es verschlägt einem heute den Atem. In der Heidelberger Doktorarbeit eines dreissigjährigen Kriegsteilnehmers, der in der Sowjetunion in Kriegsgefangenschaft geriet, stösst man auf Sätze, die sich Wort für Wort kritisch auf die derzeit im Namen der Aufklärung angestimmten Moral-Töne politischer Korrektheit beziehen lassen. Der Text wurde Ende 1953 eingereicht, und sein Autor hiess Reinhart Koselleck.
In dieser erst 1959 unter dem Titel «Kritik und Krise – ein Beitrag zur Pathogenese der bürgerlichen Welt» veröffentlichten Studie prägte der junge Historiker den Begriff von der «Hypokrisie der Aufklärung», der zum polemischen Leitmotiv seines Denkens werden sollte. Das Bürgertum des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts, behauptete er, habe den Politikern im Namen einer auf Beglückung aller Menschen ausgerichteten Utopie von absoluter Gleichheit den moralischen Prozess gemacht. Und dieser Prozess habe am Ende nur den eigenen Klassen-Interessen gedient, obwohl er aus Diskussionen in scheinbar «interessefreier» Privatheit hervorgegangen sei. Der Gleichheitsanspruch wirkte als Illusion und Täuschung.
Heute sind angesichts eines real existierenden Egalitarismus zahlreiche Aspekte solcher Gleichheit für die westlichen Gesellschaften längst in einem früher kaum vorstellbaren Mass verwirklicht. Und dennoch liegt der Fokus der öffentlichen Diskussion auf den angeblich weiterhin bestehenden, immer kleineren Differenzen, die mit einer moralischen Aura überhöht werden. Wir sind mit Vorschlägen wirtschaftlicher Umverteilung und mit Standards intellektueller Kontrolle als Weg zu einer Gleichheit aller «Identitäts»-Ansprüche konfrontiert, die man ganz in Kosellecks Sinn «Hypokrisie der Aufklärung» nennen kann und denen zumal in Europa kaum jemand ungestraft öffentlichen Widerstand bietet.
Darüber hinaus hatte Koselleck vor fast siebzig Jahren gezeigt, wie die moralische Kritik und die Diagnose politischer Krisen auf Dauer gemacht werden und alle abweichenden Positionen ins Abseits schieben, sobald sie im Namen abstrakt-utopischer Vorstellungen auftauchen. Mit diesem Argument war kritische Moral-Resistenz zu einem Potenzial der Historikerdebatten geworden, das sich Kosellecks Kollegen allerdings nur selten zunutze machten.
Ein schwieriger Denkweg
Während man also feststellen kann, dass er tatsächlich eine Krankengeschichte unseres nicht mehr so frühen einundzwanzigsten Jahrhunderts vorweggenommen hat, fand Kosellecks Dissertation in der eigenen Gegenwart kaum ungebrochene Zustimmung. Statt – wie sonst üblich in einer Assistentenstelle – die eigene Forschungsarbeit fortzusetzen, musste Koselleck, an dessen Talent niemand zweifelte, zunächst für zwei Jahre als Lektor für deutsche Sprache an der University of Bristol unterrichten, bevor er mit seinem Habilitationsprojekt zu dem eher vorsichtig-konventionellen Thema «Preussen zwischen Revolution und Reform» begann. Und in einer Zeit schneller akademischer Karrieren wurde er erst 1966 – mit 43 Jahren – auf eine Professur für Politische Wissenschaft – nicht für Geschichte – an die Ruhr-Universität Bochum berufen.
Vor dem Hintergrund der gutgemeinten demokratischen Aufbruchsstimmung in der jungen Bundesrepublik Deutschland war Koselleck offenbar mit seiner Skepsis gegenüber einer Grundstruktur des Aufklärungsdiskurses verdächtigt worden, ein Feind des Fortschritts zu sein. Die einschlägigen Vorwürfe steigerten sich bis hin zum Verdacht einer Sympathie für rechts-totalitäre Ideologien wegen der doppelten Bezugnahme von «Kritik und Krise» auf das Werk des Juristen Carl Schmitt, eines aussergewöhnlichen Denkers, der – wie Martin Heidegger – den Nationalsozialismus unterstützt hatte und nach 1945 nicht wieder zum Universitätsunterricht zugelassen wurde.
Der Faschismusverdacht
Schmitt verdankte Koselleck vor allem die These, dass die Moralutopien der Aufklärung aus der privaten Frustration gebildeter Bürger über ihren Ausschluss von der rein aristokratischen Politik des Absolutismus entstanden waren. Und von ihm stammte auch die – sicher nicht nur rhetorische – Frage, ob denn bleibende moralische Werte überhaupt mit einer historisierten Welt zu vermitteln wären, wie es die bürgerliche Geschichtsphilosophie propagierte.
Von Schmitts nie revidierter Ablehnung der Grundformen demokratischer Politik jedoch hatte Koselleck explizit Abstand genommen. Trotzdem führte der sechs Jahre jüngere Jürgen Habermas, der in seiner Habilitationsschrift über den «Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit» die Entstehung der bürgerlich-ethischen Normen aus der Sphäre der Privatheit gerade als Grundlage ihrer politischen Legitimität hervorgehoben hatte, in einer Besprechung von «Kritik und Krise» die eigene Abgrenzung zu Koselleck auf dessen angebliche Abhängigkeit von Schmitt zurück. Bei aller intellektuellen Anerkennung hatte Habermas so Kosellecks Skepsis gegenüber der Gründungskonstellation parlamentarischer Demokratie im Klima der frühen sechziger Jahre zu einem Faschismusverdacht gemacht, der lange wirksam blieb.
Trotz solchen Rückschlägen aber und ohne das Stigma eines politisch «Rechten» abzuschütteln, ging Koselleck, der seit den siebziger Jahren an der neugegründeten Universität Bielefeld zu einer Autorität der «Geschichtstheorie» (immer noch nicht des Fachs «Geschichte») aufstieg, erstaunlich gelassen – und aufrichtig – mit solchen Unterstellungen um. Nie versuchte er, die Amtsenthebung seines Vaters, eines Professors für Pädagogik, durch die Nationalsozialisten in eine Entschuldigung für seine eigene Mitgliedschaft in der Hitlerjugend oder für seine Freiwilligen-Meldung zur Wehrmacht umzusetzen. Dem politischen Rufmord arbeitete er sogar in die Hände mit der riskanten These, Hitler habe nicht schon seit September 1939 einen Weltkrieg gewollt.
Kosellecks Innovation
Zugleich war Koselleck jedoch der einzige deutsche Historiker seiner Generation, der über die Zeit zwischen 1933 und 1945 aus der Perspektive ihrer Opfer schrieb – und zwar mit einem damals ungewöhnlichen Impuls der Vergegenwärtigung. In seiner Studie über «Terror und Traum» unter Verfolgten des «Dritten Reichs» stellte er Protokolle von Angstträumen deutscher Juden aus den frühen dreissiger Jahren den bei KZ-Häftlingen ohne Überlebenschance später vorherrschenden Heilsträumen gegenüber. «Auf der Rampe von Auschwitz», so legte Koselleck das Paradox dieses Befunds aus, «galten nur animalische Kriterien. Die innere Evidenz der Überlebenschancen, die sich in den Träumen der Häftlinge manifestierte, ist nicht mehr kommensurabel mit der statistischen Frequenz, mit der vergast wurde. Damit wurde den Vernichteten auch der letzte Sinn, der Sinn des Opfers, entzogen.»
Als junger Kollege habe ich miterlebt, wie Reinhart Koselleck bei einem Kolloquium der Forschungsgruppe «Poetik und Hermeneutik» seinen Generationsgenossen, von denen es einigen damals noch gelang, ihre Vergangenheit als aktive Nationalsozialisten zu verbergen, eben mit seinem Vortrag über Träume unter den Opfern jener Zeit die Unmittelbarkeit historischer Vergegenwärtigung zumutete. Nach seiner Präsentation entlud sich ein Sturm der Vorwürfe, die von der angeblichen Absenz einer Methodengrundlage bis zur Beschimpfung als nationaler Nestbeschmutzer reichten. Koselleck verteidigte sich kaum, schien deprimiert und blieb dem gemeinsamen Abendessen fern. Nur eine Replik auf seinen Vortrag, nicht der Vortrag selbst ist im Dokumentationsband jener Tagung erschienen.
Was bleibt
Fünfzehn Jahre nach Kosellecks Tod nennt ihn der englische (nicht der deutsche) Wikipedia-Eintrag «einen der bedeutendsten Historiker des letzten Jahrhunderts». Als bleibende Beiträge zur Geschichtswissenschaft werden vor allem die Entwicklung der Begriffsgeschichte zu einer eigenständigen Forschungsmethode und die «Historisierung der historischen Zeit» hervorgehoben. Damit ist die These gemeint, dass jenes Verhältnis zwischen einer «hinter uns zurückbleibenden» Vergangenheit, einer für menschliche Gestaltung «offenen Zukunft» und einer Gegenwart des «blossen Übergangs», das wir bis heute als allgemein menschlich ansehen, erst in der von Koselleck so genannten Sattelzeit zwischen 1780 und 1830 entstanden sei.
Tatsächlich wurden diese beiden Innovationen von der Disziplin «Geschichte» mit einem Grad von Nachhaltigkeit aufgearbeitet, der den Blick auf Kosellecks intellektuelles Profil verstellt und neutralisiert haben könnte. Denn er gilt als ein grosser Geschichtstheoretiker, obwohl eigentlich jedem Leser seiner Texte auffallen muss, wie schwer es ihm fiel, seine oft unerhörten Intuitionen betreffend die Vergangenheit mit abstrakten Begriffen zu kommentieren oder gar in von anderen Historikern zu benutzende Verfahren umzuschreiben.
Vielleicht ist es also an der Zeit, Reinhart Koselleck – zum Beispiel ausgehend von dem Essay über «Terror und Traum» – als den einzigartigen Historiker der Vergegenwärtigung zu entdecken, als den Historiker, der fasziniert war von der Frage, wie je spezifisch Menschen der Vergangenheit – Opfer und Täter – ihre Welt erlebten. Gerade diese Perspektive hatte ihn ja auch über die Ahnung, dass verschiedene Zeiten unter verschiedenen Konfigurationen zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft ihre Welt erfahren, zur Einsicht in die Geschichtlichkeit des historischen Weltbilds geführt.
Ein solches Verhältnis zur Vergangenheit kann nicht zu Gewissheiten und schon gar nicht zu moralischen Werten führen, sondern bleibt allein motiviert von der lebendigen Neugierde, das Anderssein anderer Menschen zu erleben. Dieser Dimension näherte sich Koselleck übrigens auch als technisch kompetenter Zeichner satirischer Porträts von Zeitgenossen.
Die letzte Szene
Zum letzten Mal bin ich ihm in der Stadt Wolfenbüttel weniger als ein Jahr vor seinem Tod begegnet. Dorthin waren wir beide zur Verleihung des Lessing-Preises an einen Freund und bewunderten Kollegen gekommen. Meine Frau hatte mir vorgeschlagen, vor dem Heimflug aus Deutschland noch weissen Spargel zu kaufen, den es in Kalifornien nicht gibt. So trafen Koselleck und ich uns zufällig frühmorgens auf dem Markt – was wir beide einigermassen peinlich fanden.
Ich fühlte mich verpflichtet, meinen Spargel-Auftrag zu erwähnen. «Aber was führt Sie denn hierher, Reinhart?», fragte ich den schon gebeugten und etwas abgemagerten Greis. «Das wollen Sie wirklich wissen?», fragte Koselleck mit einer Stimme, die warm klang, und mit dem vertrauten, wie immer halb ironischen Lächeln: «Dann schauen Sie doch mal, wie schön die Frauen hinter den Ständen aussehen.»
Dies ist die Erinnerung an eine Gegenwart, die unumkehrbar vergangen ist – und auch an einen Willen zur Unmittelbarkeit des Erlebens, der nicht mehr zu unserer Welt gehört.
