"You did not invent my sadness."

Petite Maman was a quiet, understated, beautiful masterpiece. Director Céline Sciamma's follow up to the highly acclaimed Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Petite Maman sees a mother and daughter mourning the loss of a mother/grandmother while trying to clear out the house that she lived in. Less is most definitely more here, and the lessons this movie gives on grief (both independent and shared), and how we handle death as adults, as children, and as parents are subtle, but extremely profound. Josephine and Gabrielle Sanz are incredibly bright young talents that get to handle the full brunt of this movie's emotional weight and they both do so beautifully. Do yourself a favor and go watch this. It is in French, but in today's world that should never stop you from seeing a film, especially one this good.

Vaticinio de "sorpresón"

Rugen los motores en la parrilla de salida de la carrera electoral hacia el Parlamento Europeo, del 6 al 9 de junio (en España, el 9J). El Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE) publicó el martes la resolución con las 33 candidaturas definitivas proclamadas (de las 39 presentadas).

La campaña para cubrir 61 escaños arrancará a las 00:00 horas del viernes 24 de mayo y terminará a las 24:00 del viernes 7. La lista de Vox la vuelve a encabezar Jorge Buxadé, con los independientes Hermann Tertsch y Juan Carlos Girauta (exportavoz de Ciudadanos en el Congreso) en los puestos segundo y tercero. El jefe de la delegación y Girauta han estado de visita en Canarias. Días antes de la congregación de “movimientos patrióticos” (Europa Viva 24) del fin de semana en el madrileño Palacio de Vistalegre, Jorge Buxadé pretendía intervenir en la Comisión de Asuntos Europeos y Acción Exterior del Legislativo autonómico. Se quedó a las puertas, después de que la Mesa acordara, en conformidad con la Junta de Portavoces, posponer las comparecencias de Juan Fernando López Aguilar (PSOE), Gabriel Mato (PP) y del representante de los Conservadores y Reformistas Europeos a fin de “garantizar la neutralidad institucional”. En la calle, arropado por los cuatro diputados regionales del partido que lidera Santiago Abascal y Girauta, Buxadé dio cuenta de su enfado. Portador de un cabreo monumental, sin renunciar a la sonrisa, expresó un contundente rechazo al pacto sobre asilo y migración, confrontó “los arbitrarios criterios de los fanáticos del clima”, prometió una “patada en el culo” a los okupas y vaticinó “un sorpresón” como antesala de una “revisión” en la UE. 

La última ocurrencia de Gabriel Rufián para epatar a los más cerriles ha sido afirmar que le da más miedo Yolanda Díaz que Santiago Abascal... Rufián no tiene miedo a Abascal porque le necesita como vicepresidente para volver a ser algo y porque es antifascista solo por folklore. El partido de Gabriel Rufián homenajea cada 28 de abril a los hermanos Josep i Miquel Badia. Todos los años sin que ni un solo miembro de ERC, ni por supuesto Gabriel Rufián, se haya posicionado en contra de que su partido homenajee a dos fascistas que se dedicaban a asesinar sindicalistas. Entre ser antifascistas e independentistas se quedan con lo segundo... Esquerra Republicana es un partido independentista y a veces, como el PNV, parece algo más progresista por la comparación con los partidos de la derecha nacionalista española. Pero no conviene llevarse a engaño... Para ERC, para Gabriel Rufián, por encima de la clase está la nación, por eso cuando tiene que elegir entre los intereses de la burguesía catalana y los de la clase trabajadora del resto del país elegirá siempre a Trías o Puigdemont. La izquierda española tiene que dejar a mirar a Gabriel Rufián con romanticismo y empezar a ver a ERC con pragmatismo, cuando sean necesarios y se los necesite habrá que acordar con ellos, pero siendo conscientes de que sus intereses están muy alejados de las preferencias progresistas (Antonio Maestre)

After watching so many movies that thud and blunder along for more than two hours to no lasting effect, it's a blessed relief to watch Céline Sciamma accomplish so much so quietly in just 72 minutes. Petite Maman begins with 8-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) saying goodbye to the residents of the nursing home where her grandmother has just died. She then accompanies her parents (Nina Meurisse, Stéphane Varupenne) to the house where her grandmother lived, but her mother is so overcome by emotion at the prospect of clearing out a place so laden with memories, that she leaves her husband and Nelly to finish the job. While her father does most of the work, Nelly wanders out to play in the autumnal woods near her grandmother's house. There she meets another 8-year-old called Marion (Gabrielle Sanz), who is building a hut out of fallen branches in the forest. Immediately we are struck by the fact that Nelly's mother, who is also named Marion, had told Nelly about the hut she had built in the forest. And so begins a bit of magic, in which we realize along with Nelly that she has traveled back in time to meet her own mother as a child. Sciamma does this revelation with such finesse that it took my breath away, crafting a haunting fable about family and memory and regret. It's only the most recent of her triumphs as a director, following such remarkable films as Water Lilies (2007), Tomboy (2011), Girlhood (2014), and the marvelous Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).
