Copacabana

The sun beat against your skin, and the salty water found its way into a small scratch on your leg. The feeling was quite obviously uncomfortable. You knew this was a public beach, yet still the sounds of others was slightly annoying. You had came here to relax and read, probably get some ice cream too. However, the day had not gone as planned; first of all, your friend had came down with a fever, and was unable to join you for the day, a couple a few feet away from you seemed to be two seconds away from ripping each others clothes off. A group of children repeatedly tossed sand, the wind sending into your eyes, as their parents repeatedly scolded and yelled at them. You kept it quiet, after all, they were just kids.
There you were, laying on the bright pink towel, headphones in, and an odd shaped glass containing Yerba mate in your hand. Everything seemed to be at least okay, despite the discomfort. As music played in your ears, another sudden pain was brought to you. A large football, you could feel it’s rough and outdated texture scratch your back. It seemed to hit your back at ninety-seven miles per hour, you didn’t want to be dramatic, but it was likely to leave a mark on your exposed back.
You turned around, and tugged off your glasses, eyebrows nearly furrowed, and a slight grimace on your face. Your eyes softened once seeing the perpetrator, a young boy with tan skin, short curly hair, and large brown eyes stood there awkwardly, his mouth twisted into a scared sort of frown. For a moment, you sat there, turned around looking at him, with him standing, refusing to move a muscle, for he feared of your reaction.
“I’m sorry miss!” He blurted with a slight lisp, caused by a large gap where his two front teeth should have been. Not changing your facial expression, and not saying a word, you lifted yourself off of the towel in the sand, and palmed the ball. Spinning it around in your hands and standing up, you said:
“It’s alright man, but can I play?” After such a long and boring day, you figured it could entertain you as you waited for the others at the beach to leave. The boy, relieved and somewhat confused, stared blankly, before breaking away from his daze.
“Oh, yeah, sure.” He sputtered. With that, you placed the ball on the ground, and flicked into the air with your foot, silently cursing at the feeling of the hot sand against your feet. Once you had gotten the ball in the air, you used you knee to raise above you, before sending it back to the boy with a header. He received the ball with a smile, and touched it with his left foot, and softly kicked it into the air. He caught it with his head, and balanced it there for a few seconds, while you nodded in approval. He then let the ball fall, before passing it back to you. The game continued, as you performed scissors kicks, more headers, and skill moves.
At one point, you had the ball on the floor, and rolled it up your ankle, kicking it up and over to create an arch. The attempt failed, rolling down the beach. You and the boy paused and looked at each other, before bursting out into laughter at the mistake. The two of you began to walk down the beach to retrieve the football, until y’all noticed it had already been picked up. There stood a muscular man, covered in tattoos, with curly hair and glasses.
“You’re doing it wrong.” He began, “you have to land on your dominant foot.” You smirked and rolled your eyes; “Thanks for the advice, but my left foot is dominant.”
“Oh, so then you just suck.” The man concluded with a sassy tone. You could tell he was joking, but a part of you was embarrassed, you just brushed it off. The boy on the other hand, stood there, mouth agape, standing in between the confrontation. “Can we get the ball back?” You rhetorically asked. The man shook his head: “you’ve got to get it from me first.” Your eyes rolled behind your glasses as you jogged towards him, already tired.
Sticking your foot forward in a lazy attempt to tackle him, he grasped the ball with the tip of his foot, and pulled it back. He looked down at y’all’s feet, then back at you with a smug and sarcastic grin. Not wanting to entertain him, your next tackle was more aggressive, but you sort of hid the fact that you were trying hard in order to avoid embarrassing yourself. Once again, he kept the ball from you, kicking softly between your legs before pulling it back. He cocked his eyebrows, and looked at you through his brown glasses, flashing a shiny perfect grin.
By now he could tell you were slightly annoyed, anyone could see that. “One more try?” He asked with a jokingly concerned tone. You didn’t respond, but instead began to pace quickly towards him, catching him off guard with the sudden quick and agile speed. Your feet almost slapped against the sand, as you ran about 3 feet in front of you. The man remained calm, and plastered another smirk onto his face.
You were sure that you’d be able to get it this time, and a part of you wanted to show him some “Brexit football,” and flip him over sending him three miles away with a strong slide tackle. The thought made you laugh internally, thinking of him flipping around in the air before landing on his ass. Before you could steal the ball though, he perfectly recreated the trick you had attempted. The ball made an arc over you, as the man stepped in front of you to receive it. While you were impressed, you were mainly agitated. You tried to hide the grimace on your face, but the man looked at you with an agape smile, laughing as he held his stomach. It’s not even that funny, you bitterly thought to yourself as you rolled your eyes.
The boy continued to look absolutely astonished, refusing to utter a sound. Unable to really notice him due to your slight frustration, at first you weren’t able to hear him speak.
“Neymar Jr!” He shouted, the man’s eyes darted away from you and towards the boy, as he smiled and held up a finger to his lips. Upon further inspection, you saw that it most definitely was the famous footballer, how didn’t you notice? It seemed obvious once you heard the name, considering he was only wearing glasses to cover his amazing green eyes.
“Nice disguise, dumbass.” You muttered, still a little butt-hurt. Neymar turned to face you, that stupid grin still on his face. He then began to step towards you, and once he got closer, he pushed his glasses up towards his hair, looking down out you with those iconic eyes.
“Someone’s still salty.” He retorted with a wink. You had to be honest, the scenario gave you extreme butterflies, but who wouldn’t get them? The boy now moved closer to Neymar, and spoke in a hushed tone to avoid alerting others of his presence. “Can you sign my ball?” He interrupted. Neymar’s eyes landed on the boy below him, his smile no longer a flirtatious one, but more warm and friendly, before nodding and squatting down.
Looking up at you, he asked, “Do you have a pen…?” “Y/n.” You finished, “Y/n.” He confirmed.
“Yes I do, I’ll go get one from my bag.” The boy looked up at you with his small eyes, “Thank you so much!” That felt pretty good not going to lie, making that kid happy. You jogged over to retrieve your bag, and slipped it onto your shoulder before jogging back to the two boys again. You stood tall amongst the two, before sort of lowering you self to give Neymar the black permanent marker. A few seconds passed as Neymar signed his name on the ball, whilst the kid stood, his eyes not moving from Neymar’s hand as he remained silent.
After signing the ball, he handed it to the boy with both hands, and flashed a large grin. The boy seemed as if he was going to cry, but kept it together and thanked him after Neymar held up his hand to high-five him. Once the boy had jogged off to somewhere, Neymar placed his hands on his knees and stood back up, then held out his hand to give you back your pen. Your hand reached forward to take it, but he quickly retracted his hand and closed his palm around the pen. You looked up in confusion, your eyebrows furrowed slightly. “Wait, I forgot to ask,” he said with that stupid coy grin. “Do you think I could get your number?”
Criticism and advice is super appreciated😜
