Zuko’s Story
Summary: Y/n is a fan of tea, but she's an even bigger fan of the cute boy who sells it at the Jasmine Dragon. Prompts: 1. “I think I’m falling in love with you, and it scares me.” 4. “I’ve always been in love with you, since the beginning.” 11. “You look beautiful.” 23. "I really like having you around." Fandom: ATLA Pairing: Zuko x reader Warnings: none A/N: This is for @fromthewatertribe‘s 1k event! This was an idea I had before but saw your prompts and knew it would fit perfectly!
I slowly sipped on my tea, eyeing the cute server. I had been gawking at him for who knows how long, but I knew he wouldn't notice. He never noticed.
I knew his name was Lee by hearing it around the shop. I had been coming every single day for the past three weeks during my little brother Cam's bending lessons. I wasn't a bender, but he was, and I was determined for him to learn. Ever since our father had been taken away for bending when the fire nation raided our village, I knew he had to learn. I ran away with him the day I learned he could bend, refusing to let them take him too. As a result, we ended up as refugees in the last safe place there was, Ba Sing Se. And, even though money was so unbearably tight, I insisted that he go to regular lessons to learn how to bend. I was not going to let his talent be wasted.
"Would you like more tea?" I was startled out of my thoughts my a low voice beside me. I looked up quickly and had to fight back a blush. Of course it was Lee.
"No thanks, handsome," I blatantly flirted with him like usual and pressed a coin into his palm. He blinked a couple times before closing his hand around the coin. I got up and left him at the table, exiting the shop. It was about time I picked up Cam anyways.
I began to walk in the general direction of Cam's lessons. I didn't make it far, though. After a few minutes of walking, I was roughly pulled into an alley. I tried to scream, but a hand muffled my attempts. I twisted and thrashed, but my assailant had caught me well off guard so there was not much I could do to free myself. So, I stopped trying to free myself. I decided to wait until I saw an opening and take it. I had a whole plan in motion but it was shattered when I saw who had grabbed me.
"Lee?" I mumbled through his hand. I scrunched my eyebrows together and relaxed in his hold. It was only then that I processed how close we were. He had my wrists clasped behind my back, the rest of his arm pressing his body to mine. He was half a head taller then me, so he was looming over me.
"How to you know my name?" He rasped angrily. He lowered his hand from my mouth, which I appreciated, but when he brought it back he was holding a knife. I guess I preferred being muffled. He held the blade to my throat as a threat.
Well, I guess he finally noticed my staring.
"I heard it around the shop," I answered truthfully. To be honest, I was scared out of my mind. But, I was also a little bit turned on. This guy was really hot and the tough guy act sure wasn't helping my heartbeat. He was a lot cuter up close, I thought, then cursed at myself. That's what I was thinking about when I had a knife to my throat? However, for some reason, I didn't feel like he would hurt me. Be it the result of my crush or intuition, I just couldn't bring myself to be scared.
"Why do you stare at me all the time? What do you know? Do you know who I am?" He paused for a millisecond. "Answer me!" He shouted.
I opened and closed my mouth, I was sure I looked like a koi. "I, uh, don't know how to answer that," I replied carefully. "But I have no idea who you are or anything else pertaining to you for that matter."
"Then why are you always in the shop? And why do you always stare at me?" He asked the same question again and I knew I would have to give him a response. He wasn't going to let this one go.
"I like tea?" I said meekly. He gave me a hard stare in response. I sighed in defeat and slumped a little bit. I broke eye contact and looked off to the side to make sure no one was coming. It would be hard for Lee to explain his way out of that one. "Can you let me go at least?" I finally sighed. "I am not going to hurt you, you are the one with the knife."
Lee frowned but nodded and let me go. I shook out my arms, slightly numb from the awkward angle, and sighed in relief.
"Now tell me," Lee began, raising his knife to my throat again. "What business do you have with me?"
I rolled my eyes and pushed the knife away, no longer really scared. If Lee was a bad guy, he never would have let me go. "None? Listen if you want the truth, here it is. I think you're cute so I like going to the shop and watching you work. Nothing malicious."
"Oh," he said softly, lowering his knife.
"I am really sorry for staring at you all the time, I'll stop coming if that's what you want-well of course it's what you want of course you don't want some freak staring-"
"No." Thankfully, Lee cut off my rambling. "I, uh, well... I don't mind, well it's not that I don't mind but I really like having you around the shop."
"Oh," I breathed, a flush rising to my cheeks.
"Yeah," he muttered quietly and looked away. He reached up and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and quickly added, "You bring the tea shop a lot of business!"
"Oh," I said again, this time less excited. "Yeah I guess so," I muttered dejectedly.
"Well that's not it," Lee quickly followed up. "I mean I like your presence in the tea shop, you're really nice and tip well and ugh that's not what I mean I am just going to stop talking."
"I think that would be for the best," I chuckled. Then I looked at him again. He was so unbearably cute and I was sure I would never get another opportunity like this again, so I decided to go for it. "Look, I think you're really cute. Want to go out sometime?"
"Uh, I just held a knife to your throat," he responded dumbly. I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, now. Date?"
"He would love to!" A voice shouted from the opening of the alley. The old man who ran the tea shop, Iroh, walked towards us.
"Uncle!" Lee called indignantly. "Why are you here?"
"I was worried when you left so abruptly and good thing I came because you almost would have messed up this date with this lovely girl," Iroh shot me a wink.
"How long were you there?" Lee asked, a flush of embarrassment rising to his cheeks.
"Long enough," he quickly responded. "How about tonight at sundown in front of the shop," Iroh asked me.
"Sure," I nodded. "He's gotta make up for this whole endeavor somehow," I smirked and shot Lee a look. With that, I waved goodbye to the two guys and headed off to pick up Cam. This wasn't such a bad day afterall.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Okay Cam, I want you right in bed at sundown, you hear me? No waiting up for me."
"Why, you planning to be out late with your boyfriend?" Cam shot back all too happily.
"No, because you have your lesson at sunrise," I said quickly, making sure I had everything I needed. Would Lee pay? I wasn't sure but I brought my purse just in case. "I worked hard to get us to the middle ring so that you could have a proper teacher and I will not have you being late!"
I felt Cam roll his eyes and sigh at me. "Yes, mom," he groaned. "At least tell me his name."
I turned to Cam, pursing my lips. I had tried to keep this whole date a secret from him, but having a nosy 12 year old in the house wasn't conducive to secrets. He had found out shortly after I picked him up, asking why I was late and accusing me of being out with a boy. When I flushed and stammered in response, he jumped on the opportunity. That was his go to accusation, it just so happened that this time he was right. Not in the way he thought, of course, but partially I suppose. I mean I did ask Lee out on a date.
I thought for a moment, then figured Cam would find out at some point who it was, especially if we went on more dates. I tried not to get my hopes up at the thought.
"It's Lee."
Cam gasped dramatically. "From the tea shop?"
"Yes from the tea shop," I huffed and spun on my heel. I walked over to a mirror hanging on the wall and checked my makeup one more time. I needed to leave soon if I was going to make it on time.
"To imagine, a love blooming from malicious stalkering-"
"I keep thinking you cannot get more stupid and then you prove me wrong every single time," I sighed.
Cam gasped dramatically again. "Wounded, by my own sister!" He cried. "Besides, am I wrong that you stalk him? I bet what happened was he confronted you about your stalker-ering and you were all like 'I've always been in love with you, since the beginning of time-'"
"Oh hush." I turned towards the door so that he couldn't see my blush. I mean, he wasn't that wrong. Lee did confront me about the stalk- watching of him, and I did confess in a way. "I am leaving now. When will you be in bed?"
"By sundown," Cam responded in a high pitched voice, obviously mocking me.
"Okay, bye. Be good," I said as a final goodbye and left.
My walk to the Jasmine Dragon was uneventful at best. Once I got there, I saw Lee outside. He was wearing a nice suit, his hair parted in the middle and slicked to each side. I whistled as I approached.
"Nice 'do, hot stuff," I grinned. He turned to face me, and unless I was mistaken, a blush rose to his cheeks.
"You look beautiful," he blurted, then flushed a bright red that I knew I wasn't imagining.
I was caught off guard by his blatant confession, and I felt a heat creep up my neck. "Uh, thank you. You don't look to bad yourself, though I do think I like your hair all messy better."
"Oh." Zuko reached up and ruffled it, messing it all up. "Like that," he smiled.
"Like that."
"It took my uncle ten minutes to do my hair," he commented.
"Well it took you a few seconds to mess it up, now come on, let's go. I know a great restaurant that's super cheap but super good," I said and grabbed his hand, tugging him after me.
Eating was awkward if anything. Lee wasn't the biggest conversationalist, not wanting to talk about anything about himself, and the food was mediocre at best. It was cheap, though.
"Let's split the bill," I said when we were done eating. Lee opened his mouth to argue, but I stopped him. "I picked the place so it is partially my fault the food was so bad."
"I didn't know you were in the kitchen," Lee smirked.
"You don't know a lot of things about me," I grinned cheekily. At that, Lee's face darkened. He was hiding something big, I knew it. It was probably something about his past, seeing as he was so guarded about it.
"Come on," I said, breaking the tense silence. "Let's get out of here."
The waiter arrived and we paid our check. Luckily, they gave us two cups of tea to go. I took mine and Lee took his and we were on our way.
"Ugh," I groaned, sipping my tea. "This is disgusting, its so cold."
"Here," Lee reached out and took it from me. He held onto it for a second then handed it back. Miraculously, it was hot when he handed it back.
"What the..." Then it hit me. The only way he could have done that was if he was a firebender. I looked up at him in surprise, ready to make a run for it, but then I took another look at him. It wasn't like a Earth bender gave him that scar, and he was here for a reason, probably to start over. That's why he was so defensive about who he was when he questioned me earlier today. So I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. He hadn't hurt me yet, and he didn't hurt me when we thought we were alone in that alley, so I doubted that he'd hurt me now.
"Thanks," I finally decided on with a smile. I let him walk me back to my place, knowing Cam was probably still awake. When we reached my door, I turned to him. "Thank you for taking me out."
"Thank you for uh, not getting mad I held a knife to your throat," he replied, shyly rubbing the back of his neck.
"Well, I don't know if I'm still over that," I said with a small smirk. "I might need another date to see if I forgive you."
Lee's eyes darkened. "I don't know if I can do this-"
"Oh come on," I sighed. "I liked spending time with you, I hope you liked spending time with me. It's not like we're going to get married, just hang out a bit more. Come on, one more date and that's it."
Lee sighed. "One more date. And that's it."
"And that's it." I agreed with finality.
After that, we started going out on dates every few days. We went to festivals together, tried out new restaurants, and even went out on picnics. It was on one of those picnics that I finally decided to confess to him. We were up on a hill under the shade of a great tree, looking out over the sprawling city. We had lapsed into silence.
"I need to tell you something-" We both said at the same time. We both flushed and turned away.
"You first," I said.
"No you." I stayed silent, staring at Lee expectantly until he sighed and caved. "Fine. I think... Well look. There's still so much you don't know about me. I've done some pretty horrible things in my past."
"I think people can change," I asserted.
Lee shook his head. "Terrible, horrible things. Things no one should ever dream of doing. But I did them. I thought that I had lost my honor and that somehow my father could restore it to me... but now... now I am not so sure." He turned to me and grabbed my hands. "Ever since I met you I've felt like I was an impostor, a fake pretending to be someone I wasn't. Now I think this is me." He sighed and closed his eyes. "What I'm trying to say it that I think I'm falling in love with you and it scares me."
I leaned up and moved to kiss him, but he pulled away. "Why?" I said, hurt in my voice.
Lee grasped both of my cheeks and pulled our foreheads together. "Listen, I have to do something before we can be together. I need to make up for my mistakes. I got a message last night inviting my uncle and I to serve tea to the King. I think it's a trap. The Avatar is in the city which means my sister is not far behind."
"Your sister... Who are you?" My voice was barely over a whisper, I was surprised it didn't get lost in the wind.
"I am Zuko, Crown Prince of the Fire Nation."
I paused, my head reeling. I knew he was a firebender but the prince? The prince of the Fire Nation? It was a lot to take in. Luckily he gave me my time and waited patiently for my next question. "And you think its a trap but you're still going to go?" I asked in bewilderment.
"Yes. I need to stop running away from my destiny. You helped me realize that I'm not bad, I can be good."
"What is your destiny?" I asked breathlessly.
"To teach the Avatar firebending."
I pulled my head away from his so that I could get a good look at him. "Then go. And don't you dare not think about coming back for me."
"I will." Lee- no, Zuko looked like he was hesitating, then he pulled me into ferocious kiss, stealing my breath away from me. When we separated,  we placed our foreheads together, gasping for air, our breaths intermingling.
"You have no idea how long I have been waiting to do that," I gasped, but smiled.
"I feel the same," Zuko smiled too. "Now come on, let's go."
With that, he walked me home and then walked right out of my life, leaving me to wonder if I would ever see him again.

MASTERLIST: here!
Tumblr media
An obnoxiously red and orange light filters into the motel room, even with the old and tattered curtains closed, the motels’ sign conquers its way through the fabric. Sighing you flop yourself on the faded, probably twenty-year-old bed. Nose scrunching as some dust raises into the air, consequently letting out a sneeze.
“Bless you.”
“Did you just bless yourself?”
You winced at the reminder someone else was in the room, exhausted after the two-day travel to a motel room in the middle of whoop. “Yeah…”
“You really are something, aren’t you?” At the calm amusement evident in his tone, your heart rate began to slow down. He didn’t think you were crazy.
You let out a breathy laugh. Wow, I wonder how those stains got on the ceiling? Lava monster perhaps? Are those even a thing? Probably.
“Yeah… well, someone has to Jackson.” You glance towards him, he’s sitting at the small, poor excuse of a dining table. Heart rate picking up again as he gives you a small smile, already having his eyes on you this entire time.
“If I don’t, who will?” you continue.
“Touché. In that case, I’ll do the blessing from now on; you deserve a break.” Shooting you a wink. Instantly feeling flustered at his action, you fight the urge to cover your face with your hands.
Oh, Percy, if only you knew you’ve already been blessing me for the past six years.
“Even say…. If we’re in a battle?” you muse.
He gets up from the table and walks towards you. Once he reaches your side of the queen bed, he kneels, grabbing the hand closest to him, while putting his other on top of his heart. “Oh, y/n l/n, even with my dying breath.”
With that, you burst into a fit of laughter. This boy and his sarcasm.
You play along. “Hmmm what a great tale that will be. The one and only, Perseus Jackson, spending his final breath on sweet old y/n l/n. How dare you burden me with such a legacy to live up to! They’ll think I’m your lover, you know. Demigods all around the world will come searching for me, just to gawk at the beauty that stole your heart.”
At this point, Percy has fallen from his kneeling position, completely lying on the ground, overcome with laughter.
“This isn’t funny, Percy! How am I supposed to live with the guilt of knowing I don’t live up to their expectations?! I’m hardly a warrior either, oh the disappointment.”
Gasping for breath, he manages to find his words, “Don’t stress it y/n, you’re plenty beautiful. I just know they’ll all be stunned by your beauty. Don’t sell yourself short… trust me, once they see you, they’ll be envious that my lover was so enraptured by me that you’ll never be able to love again.”
Now it was your turn to laugh. Would that be so bad?
Gasping for breath, eventually, both of your laughs die down, leaving you both breathing heavily. “C’mon Percy, let’s get some sleep. Its going to be a long week of scouting for demigods if we’re tired.”
As Percy nods, silently getting up to go to the bathroom to change, but he can’t help but think to himself that he wouldn’t mind if he was stuck in the middle of nowhere with you. No matter how long.
Tumblr media
It had been three days since you and Percy arrived in the town you continuously fail to remember the name of. It wasn’t the only thing you were failing at doing either, because it seemed that for some unknown reason, the school that was supposed to arrive here for their camping trip still hadn’t shown up.
“We should send an Iris message to camp. It doesn’t look like they’re showing up any time soon, and by the looks of things, we’re going to need to have them send someone for more supplies.”
Percy sighed, looking out the window. Was this the opportunity he was looking for? Maybe… he knew he’d be a stupid fool to pass it up. Swept up in his new thoughts, he never replied. “Percy?”
Without even looking at you, he nodded, turning to go to the bathroom, “Yeah sure, I’ll go into the bathroom and make the call.”
Humming in acknowledgement as he left the room, you couldn’t help but stare at the spot he was previously standing in from your position on the edge of the bed. He doesn’t look too good.
For such a great hero, you wondered if this quest was doing him any good. After the first day of scouting the campsite, it was obvious he was already antsy to get home. It seemed no matter how light you tried to keep the atmosphere; it was like something was weighing on his mind. Mostly when you were both in the motel room together, you supposed it was because he barely went on quests nowadays. Understandably so, after all, who could blame him for wanting a break and spend time with his family? This made you feel immensely guilty since you could never give him words of truly understanding what he’s gone through. You’d arrived at camp a few days before him, yet over the years you were never sent onto a major quest. It upset you greatly at first, but you grew to appreciate your time at camp.
Before your mind could delve further into its guilt and self-pity, Percy re-entered the room, sitting next to you with a huff. “It’s all good. They’re going to send Leo with some extra supplies, and he’ll help us for the rest of this quest.”
Accidentally getting swept up in how pretty his eyes were, you tensed up, realising he was staring at you expectantly. Quickly nodding and clearing your throat you looked down to your lap, “ahh, okay that sounds good. I guess we’ll have time to sightsee or something…”
Sightsee? Really y/n? There’s nothing in this stupid town!
An awkward silence filled the room. Due to your previous thoughts, you were unsure how to proceed. This was the first time you were alone with him and had nothing else better to do.
Percy on the other hand, found that the obvious swooning look in your eyes was his green light. “Uhhh actually y/n?”
Oh, please don’t ask me why I basically just drooled all over you for NO FUCKING REASON. Snapping your head back up to look at him, you desperately tried to ignore the pounding in your chest that managed to find its way into your ears, “yeah?”
“There’s something I want to ask you.”
Holy shit he knows, doesn’t he? He knows I’ve liked him this entire time, and he’s going to reject me even though I never even said anything!
“I uhm… look I know we’re kind of on a small quest and all but technically we ARE waiting for Leo and the school to arrive before we continue… and you know we kind of have like at least a day or two until then so I was just wondering…”
“Yeah, Percy? You can just say it, you know; I really don’t mind.” I do mind, but please get this over with before I cry. With your heart rate increasing at an alarming rate and face heating up so much, you wanted Zeus to blast you right then and there.
Percy felt like he was about to puke, he’d never felt this nervous before. Yeah, he had his moments growing up with Annabeth, after all, she was his first girlfriend, but this was different. He wanted this to be different. Sure, he never regretted their relationship, and yes, he knew he’d always remember everything they went through- what he went through but… he wanted a clean slate. He desperately just wanted nothing more than to know that there was at least one person in his life that wasn’t constantly fighting for their lives—someone who didn’t have to live with as much trauma as him.
“W- would you maybe... Gods, do you want to have dinner tomorrow night? Maybe at the diner further into the town?”
HOLY FUCK.
He was interested and honestly, you were over the moon. Breathing out the breath you were holding in, you fail to hide the smile on your face, “yeah, I’d like that.”
His face instantly broke out into a wide smile matching yours. “Wait really?”
Unable to hold back a small giggle, you nodded, “yeah, Percy.”
Tumblr media
Staring at yourself in the mirror, you admire the blue dress you found in a charity shop this morning while Percy was sleeping. I can’t believe this is happening.
If you had old even more awkward 15-year-old y/n that you were about to go on a date with the boy you admired from your table during meals (when he was there), you would’ve laughed. Mainly because at that point, he didn’t even know you existed, only having your first conversation during the battle of Manhattan when you were helping Will.
Okay… lets do this.
Walking out of the bathroom, Percy is already sitting on the bed in his usual t-shirt, jeans and converse waiting for you.
“Woah… You look uh-” Never finishing his statement, worry bubbled in your chest.
“Oh, uhm… I- I can change if you’d like?
Jumping up from his place on the bed, his head shook quickly. “NO! N-no don’t do that.”
“Ah uhm… okay? Sorry, it’s just I saw it in a store earlier and uhm… it looked nice, and I just thought that maybe it’d be cool to maybe put in a bit more effort? I mean… not that you don’t look good or anything! I love what you wear, you always look nice! but I don’t know… I don’t get to look nice much and… I just wanted it to be kinda special since we don’t get to… well our lives don’t really grant us these opportunities very often. Or at least for me anyway…”
“Hey, no, it’s okay! I totally get it… you look beautiful.” After hearing your small confession and thought to prepare for your date, his heart felt like it was melting. How could someone be so thoughtful when all he was doing was taking you to a rundown diner who probably only served mediocre burgers?
A small wave of guilt washed through him. Feeling like he would never be able to truly sweep you off your feet or give you that sweet, tooth-rotting love and affection, every day, just like you deserved. After everything, he knew he could try his best but even then, he’d never be able to hide the anxiety or PTSD he had acquired over the years.
You looked up to him with a smirk. “Glad to hear it, lover.”
Cheeks heating up at your comment, he laughed trying to play it off as cool as possible. Taking a step closer to you and flattening his shirt as if it would wipe away its wrinkles, he held out his arm. “Shall we, lover?”
Matching his level of fake sophistication, you linked your arm with his, “with pleasure.”
And with that, you both walked out of the motel, with hopeful spirits. To any onlooker, you both looked like normal young adults.
Tumblr media
“Where the fuck are you?!” Percy’s voice boomed from his end of the phone, supposedly made without any monster risks.
You winced, slowly and cautiously walking your way out of the forest. The once clean dress was now covered in dirt and had few tears. It went perfectly with your dishevelled, twig and leaf infested hair.
“Space doesn’t really exist, so I’m nowhere. Life is built on social constructs and, since there’s no way to know if we’re really alive or if it’s just an illusion, I can’t be anywhere.”
“Y/n.”
Okay, he was concerned, and you couldn’t blame him. After all, how did you expect him to react after getting separated from you as you were chased into the woods by an Empousai after dinner?
Romance at its finest.
“Yeah, sorry, I got caught up, but I’ll be there soon.”
Ending the call, you couldn’t help but feel guilty as you replayed the events that just occurred in your head. The date was amazing. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was still sweet. Which led you both to go on one of those cliché night walks. That was nice too, until two Empousai came out of the forest and decided to attack you both.
Percy being…. Well Percy, he swiftly got out riptide and didn’t hesitate to defend the two of you. You, on the other hand, were completely caught off guard only just noticing as one of them turned their focus on you while Percy was distracted.
And what did you do like the perfectly trained demigod you were?
You ran like a headless chicken into the forest.
After a few minutes of running, they tackled you into the ground. Trying and failing failed to shove them off, you suddenly remembered the dagger you strapped to your thigh under your dress and stabbed them.
Clearly not your proudest moments.
Finally making it back to the room, you unlocked the door and let out a huff of relief. “Well… that date didn’t go as expected.”
Percy, took in your current state staring at you with wide eyes… but he didn’t say anything. Is he angry at me? Fuck now he’s going to call off whatever this is, all because I’m an incompetent idiot! I knew I should have tried harder in the sparring activities at camp.
Feeling highly intimidated under his intense stare, you began to play with the hem of your dress, voice going quiet. “Look I uh- I know it probably wasn’t the date you were hoping for but I uhm-“
Before you could even finish your poor excuses, your words are soon lost entirely. Percy stalked towards you with a determined look on his face. Reaching you, he firmly placed his hands on either side of your face, smashing his lips onto yours.
You let out a small, muffled squeak of surprise as your eyebrows shot up into Olympus. Yet unlike your fighting skills, this was something you managed to adapt to at a faster pace.
Eyes fluttering closed, you fisted his shirt, pulling him closer.
Please don’t let this be a dream.
Because Gods forbid if this your one chance, you weren’t letting this moment end that easily.
Moving your lips against his, the urgency he came onto you with slowly began to dissipate, feeling his soft, but slightly chapped lips move against yours. Deepening the kiss, you let go of his shirt, gliding your hands up his tense torso and along his strong arms, eventually placing your hands on his wrists that were on either side of your face. Applying a small amount of pressure to the inside of his wrists with your thumbs, his mind began to drift into a calming haze as you softly stroked them. It was almost as if you were able to brush away the worry that bubbled in him when he got back to the room, only to find you weren’t there. Yet here you were… safe.
It was intoxicating and calming having him so close to you, his entire being overcoming your senses to a point where you fought the urge to let out a small whimper when he pulled away.
Resting his forehead against yours, chest rising and falling heavily flushed against you; he continued to hold you in his warm embrace. “I wouldn’t have had it any other way.” He whispers, breath fanning against your face.
Because as much as Percy was afraid he’d let you down, he knew no matter what you were worth every single risk.
“…but I’m going to have to teach you a few things when we get back to camp. We can’t have my lover running away in battle all the time, how will I know if you sneeze?”
Letting out a snort, you playfully hit his chest. “Anything for you, lover.”
A soft smile graces his face as he looks at you adoringly as the word takes on a whole new meaning… because you were right. He’d do anything.

Panic surged through Sokka when he checked his phone and saw he had about twenty missed calls from you over the past ten minutes. Just as he was about to call back, your contact photo popped up on the screen accompanied by the duck quack ringtone you’d set for yourself ages ago.
“I’ll be back,” he mumbled to Zuko, who nodded absently while preparing a customer’s tea. He stepped out the back of the Jasmine Dragon and slid his thumb across the screen. “Hello?”
“SOKKA, THANK FUCK!” You sounded like you were crying on the other end. He frowned, pulling the phone away from his ear in response to your screech.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Where are you?” he demanded over the ruckus of your wails. His hand dropped to his car keys in his pocket, ready to leave if you needed him.
“I’M AT HOME AND THERE’S A R-ROACH IN—“
Sokka groaned. “(Y/N), I’m at work. I cannot come kill a bug for you.”
Your blubbering paused. “B-But... I need help! And no one else will help me! Please help me!”
“As much as I want to help you I can’t right now, princess. I can swing by after we close in about an hour, though.”
You made a strangled sort of screaming sound and hung up. He brought his hand down, staring at his screen in surprise. The line was busy when he tried to call you back, so he pocketed his phone with a sigh and headed back inside.
Zuko was speaking on the store phone with someone when he got back to the front, making a face like he had just eaten something sour or smelled something foul. Sokka shot him a questioning look as he tied his apron back around his waist and Zuko beckoned him over.
“What’s up?” Sokka asked in a low voice.
“Just go,” Zuko huffed. “I can finish closing by myself and she said she won’t stop calling us until you help her.”
“Wh- give me that.” He took the landline receiver from Zuko. “Seriously, (Y/N)?”
“I’M FREAKING THE FUCK OUT, SOKKA!”
“It’s a bug!”
“IT’S FUCKING HUGE AND IT’S IN MY FUCKING ROOM, PLEASE GET OVER HERE! I NEED YOU!”
He made eye contact with Zuko and his friend just shook his head. “Fine, okay, you win. I’m on my way.”
She hiccuped. “You’re the best friend I could ever ask for, Sokka. I love you. Please hurry.”
“Yeah, yeah. Love you, too, princess,” he grumbled before hanging up. Zuko was watching him with raised eyebrows. “Oh, fuck off, dude.”
“I didn’t say anything.” He tried to hide his smirk by turning away to wipe down the counter.
“Don’t look so smug.” He smacked the back of his friend’s head after he threw his apron in the laundry bag.
“Hey!” Zuko punched his shoulder. “It’s not my fault you’re whipped for (Y/N) and too much of a pussy to make a move.”
“You’re fucking lucky I’m whipped and have to go kill a bug for my girl otherwise I’d kick your ass, Zuko.” He flipped him the middle finger as he headed out the door, keys in his other hand.
“Later, princess.” Zuko twiddled his fingers mockingly in goodbye. Sokka scoffed as he left, shaking his head and muttering under his breath. Yeah, he was whipped for you. He was wrapped securely and comfortably around your pinky finger. So what? It wasn’t like he had plans to do anything about it. He was perfectly happy being your friend — your best friend, in your own words. No way in hell would he risk fucking that up and losing you.
When he banged on your apartment door you simply yelled from inside that it was unlocked. It was hard to suppress a laugh at the scene that greeted him. You were curled up on your kitchen counter, hood of your sweatshirt drawn tight around your head so only your nose and eyes were visible and a can of bug spray in your trembling hand. Your tear-streaked face lit up when you saw him and it made his heart clench in his chest.
“Hey, princess.”
“Sokka!” You dropped the can and threw yourself at him. He caught you in his arms with a grunt and you wrapped your legs around his middle, clinging to his neck. His hands supported your back to keep you upright. “God, I’ve never been so happy to see you in my life. I could fucking kiss you right now.”
He had to recover quickly from almost choking on air in order to keep his composure. “Just doing my manly best friend duties.” He gulped when you slid down his body. Your feet hit the floor again but you still held onto him. “Alright, where’s the big bad bug?”
You glared up at him for his teasing. “My room. I was about to go take a shower when it fucking flew at my face! I don’t even know where it came from!”
“Stand by, princess,” he ruffled your hair and pulled off one of his sneakers to wield as a bludgeon, “I’ve got it all under control.” You rolled your eyes a bit when he puffed his chest out and flexed comically. You released him from your vice grip so he could stalk up to the closed door of your bedroom. Of course, you stayed planted firmly in the kitchen and watched from a distance.
“Be careful,” you warned, “it’s literally the biggest roach I’ve ever seen.”
“It may be big, but I’m bigger. And smarter.” He tapped his temple with his finger.
“I don’t know about that second part,” you giggled. He shot you a withering look.
“Do you want me to kill this thing or not?”
“Yes, sorry! You are so very strong and intelligent and handsome, Sokka. Much more strong and intelligent and handsome than the roach.”
“You know what? I’ll take that compliment.” He winked at you, sending your heart into your throat. You stuck your tongue out and made a face to hopefully hide how flustered you were.
“Stop flirting and kill the fucking bug!”
“You started it!”
“Sokka!” Laughing, he pushed open the door to your bedroom and disappeared inside. You watched the doorway with bated breath, listening to Sokka rummaging around to find the vermin.
There was an almighty thud, then a crash and a shriek along with thundering footsteps as your friend dashed out of the room with a massive roach flying behind him. You screamed too when you spotted the bug as it landed on your wall. Before you could react any further, Sokka had grabbed you and yanked you out the front door, slamming it shut behind you both.
“That’s no ordinary roach,” he panted, leaning against the door. He still held you close to his torso with an arm wrapped protectively around your waist. “Fucking military drone or something.”
“Did you think I was fucking joking?” Your stomach churned uneasily thinking about the insect walking all over your walls and prized possessions. A shudder ran down your spine and you buried your face into his chest, grabbing a fistful of the front of his shirt. “What am I supposed to do now? I can’t go back in there with that thing loose!”
“I don’t know.”
“You were supposed to kill it!”
“It charged me!”
“You big chicken!” Looking up, you flicked his forehead and giggled at his incredulous look. “I thought you loved me!”
His face felt like it was on fire. “I do!”
“Then why didn’t you kill it? You were supposed to protect me, Sokka!” Your hands settled on his chest and he hoped you couldn’t feel how fast his heart was beating. “So much for being smarter and stronger!”
“But you admit I’m more handsome still?” Your cheeks burned when his hand slid to your hip, using his thumb to rub circles into your hipbone through the fabric of your clothes.
“More handsome than the roach?” You couldn’t help but laugh at his goofy smile. “I guess you qualify for that.”
“Tough crowd,” he sighed. “I was going to bring you back to mine so you could get out of your roach-infested apartment, but if that’s how you really feel then I’ll leave you with the stronger, smarter organism.”
“The roach?” you squeaked indignantly. He chuckled at your wide eyes. I’m sorry, I changed my mind. You are the smartest and strongest and handsomest again. Please let me crash at your place?”
“Wow, using me for my sweet crib? And here I was thinking you loved me for me!”
“Pretty please?” You clasped your hands under your chin, pouted, and gave him the best puppy dog eyes you could muster.
He groaned dramatically and rolled his eyes as if he were being greatly put out. “You know I can’t say no to that face. Let’s go, princess.” He disentangled himself from you and started to walk away only to realize you weren’t following. He turned back to you. “(Y/N)?”
You looked down at your socked feet. “I don’t have shoes. Or my keys.”
“I’m not going back in there.”
“Well, I’m not either.”
“Then it seems we’re at a stalemate.”
You pursed your lips thoughtfully. “Do you still have that spare key I gave you when I went out of town?”
“Good thinking, kid.” He shuffled around his key ring until he found yours, easily identifiable by the heart you’d painted onto it with your favorite nail polish. “Way to use your noodle.” He locked your front door and stood in front of you once again.
“Shoes,” you said simply, extending your leg to lift your foot in the air. “I’m not walking around like this. Knowing my luck I’ll step on a used needle and end up with some rare blood disease.” Sokka scratched the back of his neck as he considered this before a wicked grin split across his face. You did not like the looks of that. “Sokka...”
Without warning, he grabbed you around your middle and hoisted you onto his shoulder like a sack of flour. The inversion of your body made you squeal, scrambling to grab something to stabilize yourself. In your panic, you sunk your nails into the flesh of his ass.
“Jesus!” He gripped you tighter to stop you from slipping in his surprise. “I know I have an irresistibly fat ass but you gotta be careful back there, babe. That’s my moneymaker!”
If all your blood hadn’t been already rushing to your head you would’ve flushed. “That’s what you get for picking me up, asshole!” You paused. “What the fuck are you talking about, ‘your moneymaker?’”
“Well, I couldn’t have you stepping on a used needle and ending up with some rare blood disease, now could I?” You could practically hear his smirk as he carried you down to the front of your building.
“Do you derive joy from driving me up a wall?”
“Yes,” he answered without hesitation. You made an indignant noise and pinched his side. He yelped and smacked the back of your bare thighs in response.
“Did you just spank me?” You thrashed in protest, making him stumble a bit.
“No,” he grunted and then brought his hand down on your ass, eliciting a gasp from you. “Now I did.”
“Sokka!”
“That’s ‘Daddy’ to you, princess.” He tried to drop his voice an octave to sound stern but he couldn’t suppress his laughter. You were just glad he couldn’t see your face.
“I’m going to throttle you when you put me down,” you threatened.
“Kinky.”
“You know what? I’ll take my chances with the roach. Bring me back, you fucking deviant.”
He dropped you down to the ground and you leaned back against his car door, looking away from his face. “Aw, you’re hurting my feelings, babe. I seem to remember someone telling me—“
You clapped your hand over his mouth before he could continue. “That’s enough out of you, thanks.” You could feel his smile against your palm at the reference to a highly inappropriate conversation you’d had together when you were both extremely drunk. You recoiled when he licked your hand.
“Alright, alright; let’s go home. I’m exhausted.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” you muttered without any malice as he reached around you to open the passenger door. He simply gave you that same shit-eating grin and closed your door.
Sokka decided to spare your pride and carried you up to his apartment on his back instead of over his shoulder. His hands on your thighs, shifting your position every so often, made your heart race. You could still catch whiffs of the tea from the Jasmine Dragon off his clothes, mingling with the masculine smell of his deodorant. The combination put you at ease after the trauma of dealing with the roach and you sighed happily, setting your chin on his shoulder and pressing your cheek against his. The stubbly scruff along his jaw prickled at your skin but you couldn’t find it in you to care much.
You thought he’d drop you down onto his couch once you’d entered his apartment but instead he carried you into his bedroom and flopped backwards onto his mattress, knocking the wind out of your chest as he squished you under his body. Despite the squeezing weight on your lungs you were laughing uncontrollably, arms still thrown around his shoulders. Sokka wished he could have moments like this with you every night; that he could turn around and kiss you without ruining everything.
“Why so giggly, kid? Are you enjoying this?” he teased, leaning his head back onto your chest.
“Laughter is my panic response. You’re suffocating me, fatass,” you wheezed
“Nah, I think you like it.”
You hummed thoughtfully as the giggles subsided. “Maybe. You’re kinda like one of those weighted blankets.”
“Yeah?” He turned so he faced you, propping himself up on his forearms on either side of your head. “Do I relieve your anxiety?”
You quirked an eyebrow. “The opposite, actually.”
“You wound me, really. I am a calming, peaceful, meditative presence. I am a delight and a joy to be around.” He frowned when you threw your head back in incredulous laughter. You hooked your leg around his hips and flipped him onto his back, pinning him underneath you.
“Maybe you have your moments.” He stared wide-eyed up at your teasing smile and considered closing the space between your mouths. Before he could work up the nerve, you sat back on your haunches out of reach. “I need to shower.”
“Without me?” he pouted. You groaned and shoved his face into the mattress as you stood.
“Don’t wait up, baby.” He flushed at the nickname you used to tease him. He propped himself up on his elbows to see you down the hall.
“I’ll take the couch tonight,” he said. You stopped just outside the bathroom door.
“Sokka, we don’t have to do this every time. I think it’s okay if we just sleep in the same bed without arguing over who gets the couch at this point.”
“If you’re alright with it,” he sighed, dropping his head back down.
“Why wouldn’t I be? It’s you.” You gave him a quick smile before disappearing into the bathroom.
You always secretly loved staying over with Sokka. The lather of his soap running down your body into the drain made you feel wrapped in his presence — a great comfort despite your teasing that suggested otherwise. His meticulous organizing even in the shower always made you laugh a little to yourself. His products were neatly organized in the order he used them, likely something he started doing when you’d dragged him to a beauty store after finding out he used 3-in-1 “for efficiency.” Now, to your immense pride and satisfaction, he had a full skincare and haircare routine.
Upon exiting the shower wrapped in a towel, you saw Sokka snoring lightly on his bed next to a pile of clothes he’d left out for you. You pulled on his shirt and quickly wriggled under the covers, propping yourself up on your elbow. You poked your finger into his cheek and he grunted, swatting at you.
“Leave me alone, woman,” he murmured.
“You need to shower.” He cracked an eye open to glare at you.
“You’re awfully demanding for a guest in my bed.”
“Well, you worked today and you stink.”
“That’s just my natural man musk. Pheromones and stuff. Nothing to be done about it.”
“Are you an ant?”
“Only if you’ll be my queen ant.” He sent you a cocky smirk and you simply shook your head.
“You’re fucking weird, dude.” He laughed and wrapped an arm around you, pulling you directly into his armpit as you squealed. Finally you freed yourself and rolled onto your side away from him with a huff. Sokka slid behind you and rested his head on your shoulder, sliding his arm around your waist.
“You know you love me, princess.”
“Whatever,” you grumbled. He chuckled and the sound reverberated against your back, his warm breath on your cheek making goosebumps rise on your skin. His thumb slid absently back and forth across your stomach and the soft touch lulled your heavy eyelids closed.
“Don’t go to bed mad, babe. At least give me my goodnight kiss.”
Enough. It’s now or never.
Before you could start second-guessing yourself, you rolled onto your back underneath him and surged upwards to press your lips to his in an insistent kiss. It lasted only a few moments before you pulled away because he remained frozen against you. His clear blue eyes were wide as he stared down at you and you could feel the heat rising to your cheeks and the tears threatening to spill as you realized what you’d done.
“You shouldn’t flirt if you don’t mean it, Sokka. It gives people the wrong idea,” you whispered, the corners of your mouth pulling into a frown. His gaze darted from your eyes down to your lips and back again.
“Who says I don’t mean it?” And then he was finally, finally kissing you before you could tell him off. You snaked your arm around his shoulders and pulled him down on top of you, desperate to be closer, to feel his body on your own to reassure yourself that yes, this was happening and it was real. His hand trailed up to cup your face, skimming his thumb gently along your cheekbone. You both broke away to gasp for air. Sokka looked down at your flushed cheeks and bright eyes and lips that were just beginning to swell and he thought you were the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.
“Oh, don’t look so pleased with yourself,” you laughed, swiping your thumb over his satisfied smile on your way to pull the tie from his ponytail. The ends of his loose hair tickled your face as he kissed you again, this time much more gentle.
“And why shouldn’t I be?” Another kiss. “I’m kissing the girl I’ve been in love with for years.” Your eyes widened and you shoved him back onto the bed.
“Years?” you squeaked. “We could’ve been doing this for years?”
“I didn’t know you had feelings for me!”
“Of course I had feelings for you, are you joking?”
“Then why didn’t you do anything before now? I flirt with you constantly!”
“Because I thought you were joking!”
“Well, that’s on you, then. Now c’mere, princess,” he reached out and hugged you close to his body again, “we have a lot of time to make up for.”
“God, you’re such a cornball.” You giggled at the teasing kisses he peppered all over your face. When he finally caught your lips you hummed happily against his mouth. He tasted sweeter than the most tooth-rotting candy and gave you the same sugar high.
“Yeah, but you love it.”
“I do.” You snuggled down under the blanket and rested your head on his chest. “I love you, Sokka.”
He ruffled your hair affectionately. “I love you too, princess.”
“You still need to shower, though.”
“Ugh.”

i choose you
Tumblr media
summary: was it fate or a result of the choices you’d made that kept pulling you towards a certain firebender?
a/n: so the reader is aang’s adopted older airbender sister in this, and this a soulmate au but it’s not obvious ig.
word count: 824
To say that this last year had been weird would be an understatement. One minute you were chasing after your younger brother after he tried to run away and the next you were waking up in the South Pole and being told that you’d been in a giant ice block for the past 100 years. Then you got borderline stalked by a psycho fire nation prince and now that very same prince is sitting right next to you as you lay on the ground looking up at the stars.
“It’s funny isn't it? How you can make one seemingly insignificant choice and then the entire course of your life is irreversibly changed.” You don’t turn to look at him as you said this, your gaze still locked onto the night sky but you could feel his eyes on you.
“I used to come here with Aang before he discovered that he was the Avatar and we’d stay up late and I’d tell him stories, his favourite one was the red string of fate, do you know that one?”
“No, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it.” He slid down onto the ground, laying next to you.
“Well I suppose it’s not really a story, more of a belief. But according to legend, an invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break. Sometimes I wonder if I was destined to end up here, maybe there was someone that the universe really wanted me to meet.”
“Do you think you’ve met that person yet?” You turned your head to look at him, he was only inches away, his golden eyes burning into you. You reached up to brush the dark hair out of his eyes, letting your hand linger.
“I’m not sure yet.”
You let yourself slowly lean towards him until there was barely a centimetre between you when a crashing sound from one of the rooms in the temples made you spring away.
___________
You stretched out on the sand as your brother asked Zuko if he was excited about the play, “No, the Ember Island plays are always absurd.”
You chuckled and squinted at Aang, “What’s it called again?”
He ran over brandishing the poster at you, “The Boy In the Iceberg!”
You sat up, shooting a playful smile at the grumpy prince, “Oh come on, Sifu Hotman, it’ll be fun.”
He grumbled something incoherent at you and Aang ran off to talk to Sokka about something.
You’d ended up in between Zuko and Katara much to the disappointment of your brother.
Slipping your arm through Zuko’s, you leaned to excitedly whisper in his ear, “Oh I think it’s starting!” He hummed in response, silently thanking the spirits that it was too dark for you to see his blush. You stayed like that for the duration of the first act, occasionally whispering comments about certain parts they’d embellished. They showed the invasion of the fire nation palace and then it cut to a scene with just Actor Y/n and Actor Zuko. Actor Zuko took her hands in his, “My dear y/n, I have a confession to make, I am in love with you.” You felt Zuko tense up as you felt all of your friends staring at you both. You kept your eyes glued to the stage as he continued, “It’s always been you. I tried to fight it and I tried to deny it but I can’t do it. You’re the only one for me, I’d go as far to say I believe that we’re soulmates!” As soon as he said that, Zuko shrugged off your arm and got up disappearing through the doors. Your heart sank, wondering if you should ignore it or go after him, Katara placed a hand on your shoulder, motioning for you to go after him and so you did.
You found him sitting outside the doors with his head in his hands, “What’s wrong?”
He leaned his head back against the wall, sighing, “I have a confession to make.” He echoed the actor’s words, still not looking at you.
“Go on.”
“Do you remember that night at the western air temples, we were talking under the stars?”
You nodded and he continued, “Back when I was hunting you and everyone else, I uh I had a thing for you and I figured it would go away but it hasn’t and that night when you started talking about your soulmate, I thought that you were talking about me and I-” You cut him off, pressing your lips to his like you’d wanted to that night. You pulled away slowly, “I was talking about you that night and I meant it. I choose you and I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and choose you.”

Tumblr media
Love Amongst the Dragons had been Ursa’s favourite play for the longest time.
It always held a special place in her heart, but it took on a new meaning after she became betrothed to Fire Prince Ozai. She had been forced to forget her past after marrying into royalty, but the play served as a reminder of her old life.
Love Amongst the Dragons had been Kumi’s most successful play.
Kumi, otherwise known as your mother.
And you loved her with everything you had.
She was beautiful, not just for her looks, for she was pure of heart too. Sincere, generous and humble, she was renowned across the Fire Nation for her work. However, she didn’t write plays for fame or fortune, she did it because it was her passion.
Due to the success of her plays, Kumi had met plenty of nobility in the past. Despite that, not once did she expect to receive recognition from the Fire Princess herself and a personal invite requesting to meet with her.
The pair initially bonded over their love of theatre, and soon enough they became good friends. Over the years, your mother began visiting the palace more frequently and you would often join her. As a result, you spent a lot of time there too.
It was during that time you met him.
────────
90 AG
The chiming of laughter filled the royal gardens as Kumi discussed her latest play with Ursa. You sat by the lake, admiring a flower you’d found as you listened to the sound of their voices. While you were only six and much too young to understand the trials and tribulations of love, hearing your mother speak about her work with so much passion meant you didn’t mind.
You reached a hand out to stroke one of the turtle ducks, only for the animal to blatantly ignore you.
“They prefer it when you give them food first,” a small voice spoke from behind you. It had been shy and timid, but enough to make you jump out of surprise, splashing the water. The turtle ducks swam off in fear, while the voice stifled a laugh at your reaction.
Crossing your arms, you turned around to face whoever had disturbed your not-so-successful attempt at bonding with the animals. However, your look softened as your eyes met a pair of golden ones.
A young boy around your age stood in front of you, a basket of bread currently clutched in his small hands. He placed the basket down, reaching into it before offering you a piece.
“I can show you if you’d like?”
And that was the start of a beautiful friendship.
────────

Arriving at the palace with your mother, you headed straight for the royal gardens, already knowing that’s where you’d find your best friend.
Sure enough, he was by the fountain practising with his dual broadswords.
Zuko didn’t notice your arrival straight away, retaining his focus on his weapons. Instead of making yourself known, you chose not to interrupt, captivated by the way he fought.
Despite the size of the swords, he moved them both with ease. The sound of metal clanging filled your ears as he swung them, slicing through the air. Turning to deliver the ‘final blow’ to his imaginary opponent, he was shocked to instead meet your face, a blade pointing in your direction.
“Y/N!” He exclaimed, immediately lowering his hand, excited to see you after a day of intense lessons. “Sorry, I didn’t see you arrive.”
“It’s fine, I enjoy watching you practice,” you giggled.
An idea came to his mind as he extended one of his swords towards you. “Then why don’t you join me?” He mused.
“Oh please, you know I can’t use those things. Not all of us can learn from the best swordmaster in the Fire Nation, remember?”
“I can teach you! Look, the key is to think of them as two halves of the same whole…”
You watched intently as he explained the motions, gliding the metal slowly for you to follow along.
Once it was your turn, he placed the swords in your hands, advising you on how to hold them. You felt a spark at his touch but pushed the feeling down, ignoring whatever it meant. You had to concentrate.
Zuko continued to guide you while you recreated his motions, talking you through it. A grin made its way onto his face as you slowly became more sure of yourself, taking bigger swings.
“See, now you’re getting the hang of it.”
“Well I do have a pretty great teacher,” you smirked.
Your compliment caused a light blush to dust Zuko’s cheeks. It made him feel silly really, how your innocent remark was enough to make him flustered, but at the same time, he didn’t mind. Being praised wasn’t exactly something he was used to, and hearing it from you made him happy.
You outstretched a sword back to him, grabbing his attention again. You were confident in your newfound skill (that you’d harboured for all of 10 minutes) and felt ready for a tougher challenge.
“So how about that duel?”

It was a gorgeous summer afternoon, fragments of the sun’s light reflecting across the lake. Leaning against the tree, you sat by Zuko’s side, laughing at memories you shared from over the years.
“Do you remember last summer when we were on Ember Island together?” You asked, reaching into the basket between you to feed the turtle ducks. “You know, when we watched that theatre group put on a production of my mother’s play.”
“Ugh, and it was terrible! Why are you reminding me of that atrocity exactly?” Zuko groaned, yet there was a hint of amusement in his voice.
You rolled your eyes at him before continuing. “It was so bad that we snuck off during the interval so we wouldn’t have to go back. We hid behind a snack cart, but then-”
“-then you just *had* to help yourself to some fire flakes, only to find out you couldn’t handle the heat,” Zuko chuckled as he recalled you running through the theatre, frantically searching for water to cool your burning mouth.
“You’re the one who dared me to try them!” You playfully nudged his shoulder, ignoring the way your heartbeat spiked upon contact.
“Minor details,” he teased.
You folded your arms across your chest as you feigned annoyance, only causing Zuko to laugh even harder.
“Well…” You began, attempting to take the heat off yourself. “Getting us caught might have been my fault, but at least I’ve never set my mother’s favourite rosebush on fire while practising my bending.”
“Hey! That was one time-”
You erupted into a fit of giggles as he desperately tried to defend himself.
For the rest of the afternoon, you both laughed over all the predicaments you’d found yourselves in over the years. You’d been by each other’s sides through everything, and your friendship was something you held close to your heart.
Maybe you’d let him a little too close to your heart, but you’d never tell. Because you knew that if there was one thing Zuko needed, it was a friend who’d always be there for him. You would happily fill that role, even if you secretly desired more - because you would do whatever’s best for the boy you’d grown to love.
Soon enough, the sun began to set as a golden hue shone across the lake. The playful atmosphere between the duo settled, replaced by a comfortable silence as you admired the sky.
You glanced at Zuko, noticing his mind was elsewhere as he stared down at the pond, worrying his lip.
“You okay?” You asked quietly, breaking the silence.
He let out a heavy sigh before he slumped against the tree in defeat.
“My father’s been acting strange lately,” he muttered, twiddling his thumbs. “Ever since Lu Ten…”
He didn’t finish his sentence. He didn’t need to. You understood.
You examined the face of your best friend. It was filled with sorrow and pain. Honestly, you weren’t quite sure whether it was from Lu Ten or his father, but regardless, no 11-year-old boy should experience such grief.
“Hey, you know I’ll always be here to listen. If you’re not ready to talk about it yet, there’s no rush,” you reassured, placing a soothing hand upon his, causing his fidgeting to stop.
He tore his gaze off the pond to look at you. A tightening sensation grew in your stomach as your eyes met but you brushed it aside.
“No, I have to be strong,” he stated, although it seemed more like he was trying to convince himself. “With Lu Ten gone I’m now third in line to the throne, but my father makes me feel like I’ll never be ready. Frankly, I don’t know if I’ll ever be enough to please him.”
This wasn’t the first time Zuko had spoken about his relationship with his father, but every time your heart broke a little more for him. He deserved better. To be loved.
Gently, you squeezed his hand.
“Well you’re enough to please me, and if your dad doesn’t feel the same then that’s his own fault,” you smiled softly at him. He returned the expression, although it didn’t meet his eyes. You shifted slightly to give him your full attention. “Look Zuko, you won’t have to worry about being Fire Lord for many years to come. For now, you just need to focus on the things in life that make you happy, okay?”
“Well… you make me happy,” he replied honestly, finally lifting his gaze.
Immediately it felt as though your entire body had been set alight by his words, yet the Fire Prince remained oblivious to the effect he had on you.
“Really?”
“Of course. I always enjoy speaking to you, even when it’s about the bad stuff because you always know the right things to say. When I’m with you, I don’t have to worry about being Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation because I’m just… happy,” he continued. A blush formed on his cheeks as he realised your hands were still connected, although he made no effort to move it. “I often find it hard to open up to people, but you’re patient with me. I guess what I’m trying to say is… I’m glad you exist. I’m thankful to call you my friend, y/n.”
While the word ‘friend’ should’ve caused your heart to shatter, it only swelled as you threw your arms around the boy, wrapping him in a tight hug. Your own feelings be damned, Zuko needed his best friend more. And besides, you were patient. The two of you had all the time in the world.
At least that’s what you believed.
“Zuko!”
You heard Ursa entering the gardens, her voice filled with an unusual urgency - royal business, you assumed. You pulled apart from Zuko as he gave you an apologetic glance, knowing that was his cue to leave. As he stood, he sent a final smile your way.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, y/n.”
“Tomorrow,” you waved.
Blissfully unaware that tomorrow would never come.
The last memory you have of that day had been a conversation with your mother on the palace steps:
“Honey, we’ll have to stop by the market before we get home.”
“Why? We just went this morning.”
“I know, but Ursa asked me to buy her some herbs.”
That was the last day anyone ever saw the Fire Princess. She disappeared  overnight without a trace. Meanwhile, Fire Lord Azulon passed away in his sleep.
But Kumi knew too much. She feared what would happen if you returned to the palace, so she made a choice to protect you.
That same night, you and your mother boarded the last ship to Ba Sing Se, escaping under the moonlight.
Meaning that day, Zuko lost two of the people closest to him.
────────
100 AG (present-day)
Despite having felt like a lifetime ago, only five years had passed.
“And yet so much has changed,” you mumbled to yourself, sitting on the porch of your home in the Upper Ring.
You’d lived a comfortable life during your time in Ba Sing Se. Luckily, your mother was only known within the Fire Nation, meaning you could easily hide your past. The earnings from her plays had bought you a nice house, but it wasn’t home.
As the years passed, Kumi continued to write plays for local theatres, which were great for the city’s business and allowed you to feel more welcome. Yet still, you couldn’t shake the feeling of missing Zuko.
You dreamt of him from time to time. More often than you’d care to admit. You found comfort in the imaginary world you’d created where nothing had changed. The two of you would play in the gardens, enjoying each other’s company and everything would be just fine.
Sometimes you wondered what would’ve happened had you never left. Would you have told him about your feelings? Would he ever have felt the same?
But those were all pointless thoughts. By this point he’d most likely forgotten you, having much more important things to worry about as prince of the Fire Nation.
Deep down, you knew you couldn’t keep dreaming of the tomorrow you never had. While you did wish to see him again, that was you speaking selfishly. What you truly wanted was for him to be okay.
You hadn’t heard news of anything outside Ba Sing Se since you’d first arrived, and you could only hope that his father was treating him well, that his mother was doing good and that he was living a happy life.
Finally, you pulled yourself from your thoughts and back to reality.
It was about midday, and your mother had gone to watch rehearsals for her new play. She wouldn’t be back for hours and you needed something to keep your mind occupied. Thinking for a moment, you remembered hearing about a new tea shop that had opened in the Upper Ring the week prior.
Right now, a good cup of tea was exactly what you needed.
────────
The Jasmine Dragon was beautiful.
Only a short walk from your home, the extravagant building was adorned with gold details. The sound of the fountain could be heard as you walked across the patio, admiring the building. You entered with a smile on your face, already impressed.
Suddenly, your thoughts were interrupted by the crashing of a teapot falling to the floor. You jumped at the sound as it rang through your ears, your head snapping towards the source.
And hell, if you had a teapot in that moment you would’ve dropped it too.
Because he was right in front of you. Despite his short unkempt hair, Earth Kingdom clothes and the scar that masked half his face, one look into those golden eyes and every memory came flooding back.
Zuko.
An older man, who you also instantly recognised, was soon by his side.
“Lee, are you alright? I heard-” Iroh began, but trailed off as he followed his nephew’s eyeline which was fixated on you. Iroh’s eyes widened as he clearly recognised you, but he quickly composed himself for Zuko’s sake. “Well, Lee, perhaps you should take your break while I clean this up. Maybe our new customer would like to join you?”
You took a moment to process the man’s words, still dumbfounded, before nodding.
Taking a deep breath to calm your nerves, you followed behind ‘Lee’ as he took you through the back of the tea room.
────────
Half a decade. That’s how long you spent apart, and during all that time you longed to see him again. However, you never anticipated that the day would actually come, and by the looks of it, neither did he.
Hence why you both stood a meter apart in the breakroom, tension filling the air with every breath. Neither of you knew what to say or where to begin. You were the closest you’d been since you were 11-years-old, and yet you’d never felt further apart.
Unable to endure the anxiety-inducing atmosphere any longer, you decided to break the silence.
“So… never thought I’d see the day that the Dragon of the West owned a tea shop.”
You winced in embarrassment at your own words.
What the FUCK was that?! Five years and that was really the best you could do?
“Huh, I guess so,” Zuko mumbled. The silence returned.
As you stood opposite him, he examined your appearance, observing how you’d changed over time.
Zuko had always known his best friend was attractive. Even as kids, he’d sometimes catch himself staring at you rather than the turtle ducks you were feeding. Nonetheless, it was clear you were no longer the little girl you’d been when you left the Fire Nation. The previous softness of your face had sharpened, your features now more defined. Yet your eyes still gleamed hopefully when you looked at him.
Looking away, he tried desperately to distract himself from the girl right in front of him. He wanted to reach out for you, but he refrained from doing so. He had to be strong.
“I’m surprised you remember me, to be honest,” you spoke once more, attempting to restart the conversation.
“You’re kidding, right? You’re pretty hard to forget, y/n,” he replied, causing butterflies to erupt in your stomach as your name rolled off his tongue. Then, you noticed his expression harden. “Besides, how could I move on if I never got closure? You know, after you abandoned me without saying goodbye,” he hissed.
Ouch. The butterflies subsided. Of course he was resentful that you left.
You took a step closer. “Zuko, I didn’t have a choice-”
He took a step back.
“Do you have any idea how much I needed you? How many times I wanted to turn to my best friend and cry into her shoulder?” His voice cracked as he snapped at you. It was then you saw right through him: he wasn’t angry, he was broken. Your face fell upon realising how much pain you had caused him.
Hesitantly, you placed a hand on his shoulder to calm him. You spoke, barely above a whisper, “I didn’t want to leave you. The last thing I would ever want to do is hurt you.”
Initially, Zuko was shocked at your touch. He’d missed the warm sensation he felt under it, and time had only caused him to yearn for it more. Even now, the mere feeling of your fingertips was enough to send goosebumps down his spine.
Slowly, he placed a hand over yours. You looked up at him through your lashes. His eyes were red and glossy, but under your touch he looked at peace. He relished in the feeling for a moment.
And then he pushed you away.
“But you did,” he stated, turning away from you.
As he looked off to the side, the light accentuated his scar. The crimson colour ran deep across the left of his face and you could tell it had been there for a while. You felt no urge to ask questions. You held onto the hope that you could still fix your relationship, and that one day he’d feel comfortable enough to tell you by his own accord.
The boy sighed heavily before continuing.
“Of all the days you had to disappear, it had to be that one. The day I waited and waited for you to come because I needed my best friend to say the right thing. I needed you and you weren’t there. Instead, I lost two people that day.”
At his last sentence, you tilted your head in bewilderment. “Wait… What do you mean two?”
Upon recognising the confusion in your voice, he looked to you again. His eyes were glazed over but they held an unreadable expression. “You don’t know, do you?”
“Know what?” You asked, your voice low. All this time in the city had made you oblivious to the outside world. “What happened while I was gone, Zuko?”
“A lot,” he chuckled dryly, before his face fell again. “But the night you disappeared… so did my mother.”
You gasped at his words, feeling your stomach twist at the revelation. Ursa, a woman who had shown you nothing but kindness, who welcomed you into her home with open arms, who you viewed as family. A woman who was gone.
Instinctively, you wrapped your arms around Zuko, desperately wanting to make up for all the lost comfort he’d missed.
This time, he didn’t push you away.
On the contrary, he held you even tighter, almost as if letting go meant he would lose you all over again.
“Zuko, I had no idea. I’m so, so sorry-”
“Shh,” he soothed, pulling your head back to place a thumb over your lips. “Don’t be.”
“But-” You attempted to counter, only for his finger to press firmer against your mouth. Gently, he tucked a hair behind your ear. His eyes were still slightly red, although there was a slight glint in them.
“Not once did I blame you for leaving,” he revealed, causing a weight to lift from your shoulders. “I know that it wasn’t your fault. I just missed you. A lot.”
“I missed you too.” Now it was your turn to cup his face, your fingers grazing his scar. “I just feel like there’s so much else I’ve missed.”
“You needn’t worry about the past. You’re here now and that’s all that matters.”
He wrapped a hand around your head, bringing it to rest in the crook of his neck while his fingers danced through your hair. As kids, there hadn’t been much of a height difference between you. Now, however, he was able to neatly tuck your head beneath his chin, although you weren’t complaining.
With you in his arms, Zuko felt reminded of something he’d been wanting to get off his chest for a long time. He hadn’t realised it until after you left, and he’d spent the last five years regretting it.
“I think…” He mumbled into your hair before pulling back, needing to look you in the eye as he said it. “I think part of the reason your departure hurt me so much is because I loved you, y/n. To be honest, I think a part of me still does.”
You felt your knees grow weak and if it weren’t for his grip on you, you probably would’ve collapsed right there. The pounding of your heartbeat echoed through your body as you noticed his hopeful gaze was already flickering between your eyes and lips.
“Please tell me you really mean that,” you begged. “Because I want you. After all this time, I still want you. God, I’ll always want you.”
That was all it took for Zuko to fall apart, closing the distance between you by pressing your lips together.
Immediately you melted into the kiss like it was where you’d always belonged. Your worries and pent up emotions melted along with it, your only focus on his soft lips encasing yours.
Your entire body ignited at the sensation of your mouths together, the warmth spreading all through your veins. Wrapping your fingertips around his apron, you held him ever closer to you in an attempt to make up for all the distance that had previously been between you.
The firebender meanwhile felt invigorated, as if every touch sent a jolt of lightning straight to his heart. The electricity he felt upon contact fuelled him, pouring years of yearning into the kiss.
After a moment, you reluctantly pulled back.
You needed him to hear you say it.
“I love you Zuko, and I promise I’ll never leave you again.”
“I love you too,” he smiled, his strong arms bringing you back into his embrace.
You smiled back, finally content. He felt like home.

44- i’m sorry i’m not good enough for you
Tumblr media
“Miss (y/n), you must understand,” the head of the Royal Council sighed exasperatedly.
You said nothing. Your hands shook underneath the table of the meeting room you had been summoned to, and you gripped the fabric of your robes tightly. You must understand?
He’d just told you that you weren’t good enough for Zuko now that he was Fire Lord.
“What exactly am I supposed to understand?” You asked lowly, looking the man dead in the eyes. You weren’t scared of him, and you weren’t scared to fight the entire Council; they weren’t shit compared to the war you’d just fought in.
“The Fire Nation is in a very fragile state right now, and will continue to be for quite some time. Fire Lord Zuko has a lot of work ahead of him, and one of the most imperative things is his public image. You’ve been in the Palace for a short while, Miss (y/n), but we’ve seen enough to know that you would not benefit that image,” he huffed. He acted as if this was no big deal, as if every insecurity you’d had since you and Zuko had begun dating wasn’t being thrown in your face.
“And what has Zuko said about these opinions?” You gritted, body heating up.
“He has not yet been made aware, and won’t be until you either remove yourself from the Palace grounds, or we have you removed,” he snipped. The stare off you both found yourselves in was intense. He was so sure in himself, like he knew for a fact that as soon as you left everything was going to become so much clearer and simpler for Zuko. It made you doubt yourself, was he right? Were you just not meant to be in such a position alongside the love of your life.
You stood from you seat, the legs screeching against the floor, and all eyes followed you. You said nothing, though, as you turned and walked towards the door.
“I suppose you’re dismissed,” the man that you wanted to punch in the face snarked.
“I would have left regardless,” you called over your shoulder, never faltering.
“Whatever feelings you and the Fire Lord shared when the stakes were high are besides the point,” he yelled after you, fists banging on the tabled before him as he pushed himself up. “We have a nation to rebuild!”
Your heart was heavy in your chest his words echoed long after you’d made it to the gardens. You were from the Fire Nation, and you wanted nothing more than for your home to finally have the peace and unity that you’d always longed for. Maybe he was right. You were loud, and rambunctious, and goofy, and improper.
Not a Fire Lady.
“And what are you doing out here all by yourself?” A voice interrupted your thoughts. You looked up, and when your eyes landed on Zuko they filled with tears. You averted your gaze and cleared your throat.
“Just thinking,” you replied softly.
“(y/n), what’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Something’s been made painfully aware to me, Zuko,” you sighed, still not looking at him. “Priorities have shifted, and I’ve been told that I’ve dropped on your list,” you chuckled darkly.
“What are you talking about?” He asked in complete bewilderment. This was not even close to what he expected when he went searching for you.
“You’re the Fire Lord now, Zuko! You have obligations, and responsibilities, and this image you have to fit. And whoever you surround yourself with has to benefit your image, and I can’t do that.” The tears finally fell, slowly trailing down your cheeks. “If you stay with me, I’ll have to be somebody, and nobody thinks I can be that somebody; and I believe them!” You shook your head and turned away from him. “I’m sorry I’m not good enough for you.”
Zuko’s heart had dropped to the pit of his stomach when the tears showed up, but after your words registered in his mind it’d fallen to his feet. “(y/n), who told you that?” He whispered as he took a half step closer to you, and in return you jerked away from him.
“It doesn’t matter who told me! It’s not one person, it’s everyone, Zuko, and you seem to be the only person who doesn’t see it!” You yelled, whipping around to face him. The wind blew slightly, and the ruffling of the leaves filled the silence that followed your outburst.
“Who you are,” he started, voice low and gravelly. “Is exactly who I want you to be, I don’t want you to do or say or act like anybody but yourself. That’s why it does matter who put these things in your head, (y/n), because here you are, what, breaking up with me? Leaving me? I thought you loved me,” he raised his hands slightly, hurt seeping into his words.
“I’ve always been in love with you, since the beginning.” You cried before pausing to take a deep breath. “I love you so much, Zuko, that I’d be willing to lose you if it meant you got to fulfill your destiny.”
“If you love me, and I love you, then I can fulfill my destiny!” He exaggerated, walking closer to you. “It shouldn’t matter what anybody else says about you, or me, or us, because we know where we stand. We know who we are, and how much we love one another. I don’t want you to leave me, (y/n),” his voice quivered, and you launched yourself at him.
He caught you in his arms, and tucked your head under his chin. “I don’t want you to leave me, I actually want you to marry me one day,” he continued. “I want to rebuild this nation with you, I want you to interact with my people and make them happy the way that I know you can. I want you to make this entire place happy, the way that I know you can.” You pulled away and looked him in the eyes. “I want to have kids with you, and drink tea with you every day, and play Pai Sho,” he chuckled and you couldn’t help but join in. He wiped your cheeks and you smiled at him.
“You have no idea how much you mean to me,” he whispered before placing a kiss on your forehead, then on you cheek, then on your lips.
The advisor who had spoken with you had been fired, and replaced with someone new. A few people followed, but they were replaced as well; slowly Zuko was forming a council he could actually trust.
Slowly, things were falling into place. He had noticed a new confidence in you as you strolled through the corridors of the Palace, and you smiled at every guard and servant in a way that shocked them each time, and you went into the villages weekly. These were the very things that Zuko was told you had been reprimanded for, and it had infuriated him. You were being effortlessly you, and that was just how he wanted things.

Warnings: some swearing, nothing else i think.
Genre: Fluff
Fandom: Avatar The Last Airbender

Word Count: 3263
This one is also part of the writing challenge by @fromthewatertribe! (@astroninaaa) Again, go check her blog, she’s amazing! I chose prompts number 19:  “Okay, so, like, I might, well, it’s not that I might, it’s that I do, I, just, shit! Okay, well, you see— I am kind of absolutely in love with you.”; number 20: “You make me really, really happy”; and number 42: Character A: Fuck. Oh, fuck. I’m in love with Character B! Character C: Yeah. A: Why the fuck didn’t you tell me?! C: What?! I thought you knew!. Also, the whole idea is from prompt number 21: ways to say “I love you” without saying “I love you”.
Reader uses she/they pronouns!
•••
You and Zuko had always been close, you even went with him when he was banished. There was always this unspoken thing between you two, these feelings that you were too afraid to admit. However, you’d always let the other know just how much you loved them without using words.
•••
You were in the tea shop in Ba Sing Se, you were already closed and started cleaning everything when suddenly, you dropped a cup of tea, which ended in you cutting your hand. You let out a soft groan and quickly went to clean your wound. You didn’t say anything because it was already pretty common for you to hurt yourself because of your clumsiness, and quite frankly, you didn’t want to bother anyone.
However, Zuko saw you run to the back of the shop and followed you, thinking that maybe you’d need help with something.
“Hey, (Y/N), did something-?” He stopped talking when he saw your hand and immediately went to help you. “How did you do this?” He was clearly concerned, it was evident in his voice, and your heart melted a bit.
“I dropped one of the cups,” you said. He immediately helped you clean your cut and dried it with a clean towel.
“Wait, let me bring some bandages. Try not to break anything else!” He said, clearly teasing you because of how clumsy you were. When he came back, he grabbed your hand and started wrapping the bandage around it, constantly looking at you since he didn’t want to make it too tight. “I think that’s it.” He said when he was done.
“Thanks, Zuko, I don’t know what I would do without you. You saved me!” You said, half-joking, you gave him a quick peck on the cheek and went back to help Iroh. He let out a sigh and thought about how he wouldn’t change a single thing about you, not even how clumsy you were, and thought that you were the one who had actually saved him, and how you constantly kept saving him every single day.
•••
You truly couldn’t believe what was happening, Zuko had decided to team up with Azula, and now you were fighting against him while the Water Tribe girl fought against his sister.
“Why are you doing this?” You asked, pain and sadness clearly present in your voice. “I thought you’d changed, that you realized this whole ‘capturing the Avatar and going back to the Fire Nation’ thing was useless!”
“It’s not useless! We can go home, (Y/N)!” He said, trying to convince you.
“I’m not going anywhere, and the Fire Nation was never my home. My true home is way closer than you think.”
“What do you-?” He was interrupted by you throwing some fire at him. “Stop it, I don’t want to fight with you, I don’t want to hurt you,” he said since you’d never been actually trained and knew very little about firebending.
“Then stop this nonsense!” You yelled. He threw a little bit of fire at you and while trying to avoid the flame, you fell.
He went to help his sister, leaving you there. Once the other girl was out, Azula started walking towards you, but he pushed you to one side so her fire wouldn’t hit you. She looked at him a bit confused, but there was no time for questions since the Avatar had got into the Avatar State. You thought that maybe you’d win this fight, and you could convince Zuko to go with you, but suddenly, Azula shot lightning at the young boy, and all your hopes vanished.
The waterbender girl managed to catch the boy before he hit the ground, and you quickly run over to Iroh. “You’ve got to get out of here. I’ll hold them off as long as I can,” he said to the girl.
“Go, you don’t have much time,” You told her. She smiled at you, and for a moment she hesitated, but she gestured for you to grab her hand.
You looked back for a second and saw that some Dai Lee agents were coming towards you. You covered your face, waiting for an impact that never came, and when you opened your eyes, you saw Zuko in front of you, ready to fight them. He turned around and pushed you once again towards the girl. “Leave, (Y/N),” he pleaded. “I’d rather you’d hate me while still being free.” And with that, you finally grabbed the waterbender’s hand and escaped.
You had tears in your eyes, and you were feeling a lot of things at the same time. You closed your eyes and for a moment, you wished you could’ve done something to make him change his mind, but it was too late now, and there was no turning back.
•••
At first, when Zuko joined you it was a bit weird. You’d missed him a lot, but you were still a bit hurt after what had happened back in Ba Sing Se. You knew he was trying, though, so you also tried your best to forgive him.
It was late at night and you couldn’t sleep. This was something that happened quite often. You were used to sleeping with a doll that your family had given you when you were a child, but you lost it after you left the Earth Kingdom, so sometimes you just stayed in your room, or even got up and walked around the temple. Tonight, however, you’d stayed for a while near the fireplace, and when you finally got up and headed to your room, you saw someone walking away from it.
“Zuko?” He turned around to look at you and stopped walking. “Did something happen?”
He shook his head, trying to sound calm. “No, I just wanted to check up on you,” he said. “Are you okay? What are you doing awake?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” you replied, going into your room. He walked back to it and leaned on the door.
“Can’t sleep?”
You let out a sigh. “You know me too well,” you mumbled. “I’ve been having some trouble falling asleep without my doll,” you admitted loud enough for him to hear.
He smiled briefly and entered your room, sitting next to you. “There’s something more, isn’t it?” You nodded softly, not really wanting to talk about it. He noticed that and let out a small sigh before talking again. “I need to ask you something, something that hasn’t left my mind ever since you said it.” You looked at him, wondering what he was talking about. “Back in Ba Sin Se, you said that the Fire Nation was never your home, that your real home was way closer than I thought.” He made a little pause to see your face. “What did you mean?”
You took a deep breath while you closed your eyes, already feeling a bit nervous. “What I meant is that sometimes your home isn’t a place; sometimes it’s a person,” you started saying. “You’ve always made me feel at home because, well, you are my home, Zuko,” you confessed. “But it was dumb of me to think that you’d feel the same way,” you mumbled, revealing why you’d been so sad during the last couple of days.
“No, (Y/N), look at me,” he pleaded. You did as he said and he grabbed both of your hands. “I made a terrible mistake that day in the catacombs, I would never do that to you ever again,” he said, also thinking about his uncle. “I know I said it a million times, but I’m really sorry, and I understand if you’re still mad at me.”
“I’m not mad at you, I don’t think I was ever mad,” you told him. “I guess I was just sad that you’d chosen the wrong path,” you explained. “But I don’t really think I could ever be mad at you, Zuko."
Right after you said that he wrapped his arms around you, and you did the same too. "Sometimes I think that even though I made a lot of mistakes, I must’ve done something good to have you in my life.”
You blushed at his words, thankful that he couldn’t see you. When you pulled away, you asked him if he could stay until you fell asleep, and he said yes.
“Would you play with my hair, please?” You asked. He hummed in response and began running his hands through your head. It wasn’t long until you fell asleep, feeling peaceful and calm due to his touch.
“You’re my home too, (Y/N),” he mumbled right before kissing your forehead.
•••
The sun was setting and you had nothing to do, then suddenly you noticed Zuko sitting by himself away from the group. You walked towards him and he turned around a little bit. “Hey, do you mind if I join you?” He moved a bit to the side, gesturing for you to sit next to him.“What are you doing here by yourself?”
“I was just a little bored,” he answered. You chuckled at his response “Have you been practicing lately?” He asked since he was also teaching you how to use your firebending.
“Yes! Aang and I practiced quite a bit while you and Katara were gone,” you replied, clearly excited about learning how to properly use your bending. Suddenly you shivered a little and hugged yourself, trying to stay warm. “I can’t believe that I’m a firebender and I’m always cold somehow,” you mumbled.
Zuko immediately took off his robe and wrapped it around your shoulders. “I wonder the same thing,” he said while giggling. “But I’m used to you always being a little cold.”
You grabbed his coat, softly brushing your hands against his, and put it on properly. “Thank you,” you murmured. You slowly leaned on him, resting your head on his shoulder. “I’ve missed this; I’ve missed us, I mean.”
He hummed in response, thinking about your words and silently getting really nervous. He was also blushing a bit, and he was grateful that you couldn’t see him. “Yeah, me too.”
“Can I be completely honest with you?” For a moment he thought about what you could possibly say, and only answered your question when you called his name to catch his attention again. “I was kind of hoping you’d end up joining us.”
“What do you mean?” He asked you in a confused tone.
“Well, after all the events at Ba Sing Se, I was sad and frustrated but if I have to be honest, I thought you’d end up realizing that going to the Fire Nation wasn’t the right choice,” you explained.
“Wow, you had a lot of faith in me,” he said.
“I always had and I always will,” you started saying. “I feel like I’ve known you forever, Zuko, the real you.”
He smiled at your words, happy to know that there was someone out there besides his uncle who actually believed in him since the beginning. He thought that maybe you were the only one left since he didn’t truly know how Iroh felt about him, but he was still glad to have someone. “Can I be completely honest with you too?”
“Of course you can.”
“I didn’t join the Avatar just to help him win the war, I also did it so I could see you again,” he mumbled. “Because, to be honest, being apart from you was killing me.”
•••
The play sucked, you all agreed on that. But it had sucked even more for Zuko. He even said it himself: it took every mistake he’d ever made and rubbed them in his face. So it was safe to say that he wasn’t in the best of moods. You obviously noticed that and decided to go to his room to check upon him.
You knocked on the door and heard his voice telling you that you could go inside. “Hey, how are you doing?” You asked as soon as you entered. He looked at you a bit disconcerted, so you quickly explained yourself. “I noticed you weren’t feeling so well after the play, so I wanted to see how you were.”
“Oh, well, it’s made me think a lot,” he mumbled.
You sat on the edge of his bed so you could be closer to him. “Do you want to tell me what you were thinking about?”
He looked at you for a second and thought about how much he loved your sweetness and kindness. “I was mainly thinking about my uncle,” he finally spoke. “I still feel very guilty about what I did to him, and I’m afraid he won’t ever forgive me.”
“Zuko, hey,” you said while cupping his face. “I get why you think like that, but I’m sure he loves you and that he will forgive you as soon as we see him again,” you comforted him.
“How can you be so sure about that?”
“Because I know him and I know how much he loves you. You’re like a son to him, Zuko.”
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a second. “Thank you for saying all that,” he mumbled. “And thank you for being here.”
“I meant everything I said, and I’ll always be here for you.” You said while looking at him in the eye.
“You make me really, really happy, (Y/N),” he told you, making you blush a little.
“You make me really happy, too.”
•••
You’d met with the White Lotus, and now you were in their camp. You could even feel how nervous Zuko was about seeing his uncle again, and you’d held his hand the whole way to the camp, to let him know that you were there with him.
“Everything will be fine, Zuko,” you tried to calm him down.
“I don’t know, (Y/N). Katara tried to calm me down too but I just can’t seem to do it,” he told you.
“Hey, look at me,” you asked him while grabbing his shoulder. He stopped moving and looked at you. “Try to breathe slowly. It’s going to be okay, yeah? Trust me.”
“I always trust you,” he mumbled without really thinking about his words. You smiled softly at his words.
“Then just relax and go in there, I’ll be here until you get out, okay?” He nodded slowly and wrapped his arms around your waist. You wrapped yours around his neck and buried your face in it, enjoying the warmth of his body.
He wanted to say something before going into the tent, but he didn’t know what. It was like there weren’t any words that could express how he felt, so he just smiled at you and you saw him walk away.
•••
“So, it all went well with your uncle, right?” Asked the Water Tribe boy.
“Yes, he forgave me right away,” answered Zuko, still not fully believing it. “I couldn’t have done it without (Y/N), though. I mean, Katara helped me too, but (Y/N) is just… special, you know?”
“Right,” replied Sokka. “So, how long have you known (Y/N) for?”
“We’ve known each other since we were kids. We were always really close, and she even left the Fire Nation with me when I was banished… as you might remember.”
“Yeah, I do, she was never mean to us, though,” said Sokka, teasing the other boy.
“That’s because they’re always kind. They always see the best in people, even when they shouldn’t. They saw the good in me even before I did.” He spoke about you with such admiration in his voice that anyone would think that you’d been together for years now.
“Yeah, and how long have you been in love with them?” Zuko opened his eyes with surprise and looked at his friend.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Asked the prince, thinking that Sokka must’ve been joking.
“Are you kidding me? It’s clear that you have feelings for her. It’s noticeable in the way you talk about her, the way you look at her… everything.”
Zuko stood there for a moment, thinking about what the other boy was saying. He thought about all the years he’d spend with you by his side, how you were always that kind of light in the darkness for him, and suddenly he realized.
“Fuck. Oh, fuck. I’m in love with (Y/N)!”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.”
“Why the fuck didn’t you tell me?”
“What!? I thought you knew! We even like to guess who will confess first!”
Zuko grabbed his head, still processing everything. “I have to go tell her! I have to go!” He kept repeating.
“Then just go, nobody’s stopping you."
And so the boy left, looking everywhere for you. Once he found you, he saw you with Katara. She was doing your hair and you were just talking about random stuff when suddenly a very worried-looking Zuko appeared out of nowhere.
"Can I talk to you, (Y/N)?”
You noticed that Katara had just finished your braid, so you said yes. He told you to follow him and before you left, Katara whispered something in your ear.
“I bet he’s going to tell you that he likes you.” You blushed a little at her words and rolled your eyes at her. Sure, one could only dream, but you knew that she was wrong.
Zuko and you were away from the rest of the camp since he wanted some privacy. After all, he was about to say something really personal and important to you.
“What did you want to talk about?” You asked.
“Yeah, right, that. Okay, so, uhm, how do I say this?” He kept playing with his hands, trying to find the right way to say it.
“Did you forget or something?” You said in a teasing tone.
“No, no, I didn’t forget, it’s just that-,” he interrupted himself by taking a deep breath. He closed his eyes and let out a sigh. “Okay, so, like, I might, well, it’s not that I might, it’s that I do, I, just, shit! Okay, well, you see— I am kind of absolutely in love with you.” His words came out of his mouth in a single breath, barely giving you any time to process them. In the back of your head, you could only think that Katara was right, and at first, you thought that you were dreaming.
You snapped out of your thoughts thanks to hearing Zuko’s voice again. He was apologizing for everything and even began to walk away. “Zuko, wait!” You told him once you realized what was happening. You ran to him and wrapped your arms around his neck, and he did the same around your waist. You pulled away from him a little to connect your lips together, something you’d dreamed about doing for quite a while now. “I am kind of absolutely in love with you, too,” you said once you stopped kissing.
“When you didn’t say anything I thought that you would reject me,” he said.
“I’d never do that,” you replied. He smiled at you and kissed again. “I love you, Zuko.”
“I love you, too,” he said and realized that those were the words he’d been looking for for a while now. The words that completely described the way he felt about you. He pressed his forehead against yours and thought that the next day while facing Azula, he’d have something else to motivate him during the battle: going back to you.

pillow talk || sokka
In which Sokka finds no issue in keeping you up with his late-night rambles but struggles to find the right words to confess his feelings for you.
a/n: felt like showing my baby Sokka some love so I wrote this. @fromthewatertribe babe, this one's for you.
word count: 1.6k
prompts: “Go to bed, you idiot.” & “I’m glad you exist.”
- - -
You smiled softly at your best friend, playing with loose strands of his hair as he let out a content sigh into the crook of your neck. His arm was slung around your waist, his hand tucked away underneath the fabric of your sleep shirt, rough fingertips rubbing soothing patterns on your back. Sokka peeled one eye open to squint at the alarm clock behind you on the bedside table, 12:37 am it read.
“Hey, are you sleepy yet?” You whispered just in case he’d already fallen asleep.
“Yeah…” Sokka replied in a sleepy sigh.
“Wanna go to sleep then?”
Sokka simply shook his head in response before pulling back to prop himself up with his elbow. He blushed when you reached out to push aside the few loose strands that had fallen over his eyes before grabbing your hand and bringing it to his lips for a soft kiss. You tried to ignore the flutter of butterflies that the small gesture had set off in your stomach but it was no use.
There was obviously something between the two of you, something more than just friendship. Both of you were aware of it, but neither of you felt ready to take the next step. So you settled for the longing stares and the subtle sighs of adoration, in hopes that one day they wouldn’t have to kept secret anymore. But for now? Whatever you and Sokka had, it was enough to keep both of you happy.
“Did you know... that reindeer are actually real?” Sokka asked, absentmindedly rubbing his thumb over your knuckles.
You let out a small groan and flopped onto your back, closing your eyes to try and fake falling asleep.
“Hey! I’m asking a serious question here, up until like a few days ago I had no idea that they existed. I feel like I’ve been living a lie...” He frowned, copying you and laying on his back as well, though he never let go of your hand.
“You’re so dumb,” you giggled softly. “But that’s okay, I still love you.” You noticed the way Sokka squeezed your hand ever-so-slightly at the mention of the word love, but you didn’t comment on it.
A comfortable silence filled the room, the buzz of the city sounded off in the distance along with the quiet rumble of Sokka’s chest as he slipped in and out of consciousness. His snores were annoying to most but absolutely adorable to you. Times like these where you could silently appreciate him were your favorite. You were too shy to fawn over his features during the day but here under the soft moonlight, he never looked more beautiful— even with the small trail of drool that had begun to drip out of the corner of his mouth.
For a split second, you contemplated leaning over and pressing a kiss to his lips, something that you’d imagined doing numerous times but never brought yourself to actually doing. You wished you were more vocal about the way you truly felt for him, that you didn’t stumble over your words every time you tried to flirt or compliment him. You wished that he didn’t affect you as much as he did, but that was the thing about Sokka, he had a way of leaving you speechless without even trying.
He let out a sputtering cough, choking on the saliva that had gathered in his mouth as he scared himself awake.
“You fell asleep on me, I would’ve hoped that my presence didn’t bore you to the point of putting you to sleep.” You pouted, pretending to be hurt.
Sokka frowned, “No, no. Nothin’ like that… just wanted ta… wanted ta rest my eyes for a second. It’s hard work looking at you all day, ya know.”
“Is this your way of trying to flirt with me? Because I don’t think calling me ugly is the best approach.”
“No! What I wanted to say was that… look— it’s just that… I think you’re really pretty... and sometimes I have a hard time believing you’re real.” Even in the dimly lit room, you could tell that a blush had settled on his cheeks.
“Oh.” You replied, squeezing his hand ever so slightly.
“Mm… how many… how many stars do ya think there are?” Sokka croaked out, his voice raspy and sleepy, your ultimate weakness.
“I don’t know… gotta be at least three out there.” You sighed, your body suddenly feeling a lot heavier.
“You know…” you glanced over at him only to find him already looking back at you with an embarrassed expression on his face once he had realized that he’d been caught, “I think you look really cute with your hair down like that...”
Immediately after finishing your sentence, you snapped your head the other way and stared at the ceiling. There was no way you could face him right now after saying something so stupid. With a heart racing in your chest and chills running down your spine, you laid there in total shock. You couldn’t believe that you’d really just said that, you weren’t even sure how you gained the courage to do so. You were just waiting for him to laugh at you and give some sarcastic comment in return.
“...did you- did you really mean that?” Sokka whispered.
“Of course, I did.”
“Oh.”
If it weren’t for his thumb continuing to draw small patterns across the back of your hand, you’d have assumed he’d fallen asleep with how quiet he was being. He hadn’t said a word in the past 5 minutes and you were starting to worry that maybe you’d pushed too far and made him uncomfortable. Maybe you’d read things wrong and saw something that wasn’t really there. You wanted to kick yourself for ruining things when they had already been going so well.
Sokka laid there beside you, also staring up at the ceiling as he tried his best to understand the jumbled up mess of thoughts running through his mind. Except they were coming and going faster than he could grasp them and it was beginning to get a bit overwhelming. He wished that he could make sense of it all— the butterflies in his stomach whenever you smiled, the pride he felt whenever you laughed at his terrible jokes and the love he felt whenever he simply looked at you. Though Sokka knew how he felt about you, or at least he was pretty sure of it, that didn’t make it any easier for him to confess. The past few months of subtle flirting, shy compliments, and giddy smiles— they only confirmed what he’d already been questioning for so long.
Sokka loved you. He just wasn’t ready to admit it yet. So he settled for the playfulness of whatever your current situation was. He found comfort in the casualness of it and he knew that eventually, the time would come where he’d like to take things further. However, now was not the time.
“So… are we gonna continue to beat around the bush?” You spoke up, pulling Sokka out of his trance.
“Yeah… we’ll just figure things out later… right now I wanna… I just wanna hold ya.” Sokka sighed, flipping onto his side.
“I’d like that.” You smiled, slowly inching closer to his warm body.
Sokka wordlessly pulled you against his chest, resting his head on your chest and an arm around your waist. He could hear and feel the beat of your heart, thumping inside your chest and vibrating against his ear. You brought a hand up to play with his hair, something you caught yourself doing way too often, and let out a deep sigh before letting your eyes fall shut. It wouldn’t be long before you both fell asleep, it was now well past 1 am and your bodies were beyond the point of exhaustion.
“Ya smell real nice, ya know…” Sokka hummed, his speech slurring with sleepiness.
“Go to bed, you idiot.” You huffed, flicking the back of his head playfully.
Once again, Sokka had fallen suspiciously quiet. Assuming that maybe this time he’d actually fallen asleep, you began to let yourself relax and tried to get some sleep. Sokka, however, was still awake enough to pay attention to the little details. He noticed the way you would twirl strands of his hair with your finger before smoothing them back out. He noticed the rise and fall of your chest as your breathing pattern became more relaxed. He noticed that you were finally drifting off into sleep and figured he should do the same soon.
Except the fact that he was able to hear his love’s heartbeat so calmly grounded him in a way, he couldn’t explain. He wondered if your heart beat for him in the same way that his heart did for you. It gave him something else to focus on other than the millions of thoughts running through his head. Sokka may have had several things to work out but he was absolutely sure of one thing.
“I’m glad you exist.” Sokka sighed.
He had picked up on the way your heart had begun to beat significantly faster, and though it made his own heart swell and brought a smile to his lips, he didn’t say anything else. He simply held you just a bit tighter before finally allowing himself to fall asleep, with a heart full of adoration and his love safely tucked away in his arms.

More Than Friends (sokka x f!reader)
A/N: Here's a lovely little one-shot written for Nina's (@fromthewatertribe) 1K challenge!! This is technically a modern! AU with a female reader but if one was to think that this Y/N is the same Y/N from Traitor I wouldn't stop you ;)
Years ago… not literally since this blog is like 3 months old, but Like Way Back When I Started writing Traitor, someone mentioned a Modern AU… and I wrote like, a full outline for it… fully not expecting to do anything with it. Well, today is the day. Here you have it, Sokka x Y/N modern au, but like only just a stitch of it since I might want to go somewhere with this eventually. I am purposefully leaving out the explicit content that I wrote for ✨reasons✨
When you come home from work and you notice your front door is unlocked and you know for a fact that you locked it before leaving for work, a normal person’s first thought would be to call the police. Y/N was not a normal person.
She turned the doorknob to her and Katara’s apartment as quietly as she could. As she stepped inside she peered around the living room. No one. Without looking away she felt along the wall for the softball bat she kept propped just inside the door.
“It’s for protection, Katara!” She would always say whenever Katara opened the door a bit too far and sent the bat sliding down the wall to clang against the hardwoods. Katara hated that bat. Y/N, in the moment, loved it.
Y/N slowly started creeping towards the hallway that led to her bedroom and bathroom, but a sudden noise from the kitchen startled her. She backtracked and stood just outside the doorway, the bat hefted in the air, ready to roll heads in a moment’s notice.
She jumped when she heard another noise, like metal scraping on metal, followed by someone singing quietly under their breath. What kind of robber does that?!
“Whoever is in there, I have a bat and I’m not afraid to use it!” Y/N yelled.
She heard a laugh and then a head peeked around the corner. Sokka smiled at her defensive stance. “Still thinking about using it?”
Y/N let out a heavy sigh of relief and dropped her arms, letting the top of the bat hit the floor. She could feel the pounding of her heart slow. “Why do you do this to me?”
Sokka frowned and held up a spatula. “I am literally making you food. Don’t be snotty.”
Y/N’s eyes widened and she rushed forward. “What are you making me? I don’t smell anything.” She stood on her tiptoes to look over Sokka’s shoulder.
Sokka placed his hands on her shoulders and pressed her back down to flat-feet. “I just started. Patience. Go shower or something and I’ll be done when you get back.” He turned her around and gave her a gentle push out of the kitchen.
“What would I do without you?” Y/N asked over her shoulder.
She was met with a very exasperated groan. “Well apparently, neither you or Katara would ever eat. There was nothing in your fridge!”
Y/N hid a giggle behind her hand as she walked to the bathroom. It was true, she and Katara lived on take-out most of the time.
---
Y/N did what Sokka told her to and took her time in the shower, letting the warm water relax her tense muscles. Between classes and work, she barely had any time to do anything; cooking and showers longer than five minutes included.
The food was even better than she had hoped; she tried to remember the last time she had a meal that wasn’t from a box or off a take-out menu.
“It was alright,” Y/N shrugged as she licked the edge of her spoon and set her empty bowl on the center table. She leaned back on the couch and wrapped her blanket tighter around her shoulders.
Sokka scoffed. “I can tell since you practically licked the bowl clean.”
Y/N leaned forward and grabbed the tv remote. “Shut it,” she murmured with a smile. “You could have eaten some too you know.”
“Nah, I put the leftovers in the fridge for you and Katara tomorrow. I can’t be here cooking every night.”
“Why not? I’d like that.”
Sokka rolled his eyes. “Of course you would, you’re obsessed with me.”
Y/N scoffed. “You were the one who let himself into my apartment to make me dinner. Sounds like you’re obsessed with me! Do I need to revoke your key?”
“That’s it. I’m taking the leftovers and leaving.” Sokka made to stand but Y/N wrapped her hands around his bicep.
“Can you stay for a bit? I wanna watch something scary and I can’t do that by myself.”
Sokka snuggled in next to her under the blanket. “Sure thing.”
---
It was about halfway through the movie when the exhaustion of the day hit her. Y/N slid down further on the couch and rested her cheek against Sokka’s shoulder.
“You’re not going to fall asleep on me, are you?” Sokka murmured, just louder than the tv.
“I’m just preparing to hide my face is all.”
At that, Sokka lifted his arm and she slid under it and pressed her cheek against his chest. She was warm and content and she definitely could have fallen asleep had the music of the movie not begun to change. It was something faster-paced and anxiety inducing.
Much like she anticipated, the next scene made her gasp in fear and jump half-way into Sokka’s lap.
Sokka chuckled. “Are you okay?” His hands settled on her hips, holding her close.
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Yeah, of course. I’m not even scared.”
“Do we need to get your bat? For protection from the clown on the television?” Sokka’s hands didn’t move from her, in fact Y/N was sure they tightened when she began to move away. So she stopped.
Y/N felt a little breathless. Probably just from the scary movie.
“Maybe. You think it’ll help?” There was a stillness in the air between them and Y/N realized how close they had gotten in the moment.
“Yeah, I think you can take him,” Sokka whispered. His words were meant to be banter but it didn’t feel like it anymore, not with the way Sokka was looking at her with eyes that were so dark they looked like the night sky.
Y/N leaned in first. She was drawn towards him like a magnet. She had lost all self control and for the first time Y/N just wanted to know what he tasted like.
The second their lips connected, Y/N waited for Sokka to move away. To detach himself from her and push the blanket away and make some excuse about how he had to be up early and let himself out. So she was all the more pleased when he didn’t.
The kiss was slow and chaste and hesitant as if both of them were waiting for the other’s revulsion. But it never came.
One second, Y/N was high in the clouds and the next she was standing and pacing in the middle of the living room, the movie in the background long forgotten.
“Oh my spirits, Sokka!”
“What? It wasn’t bad, was it?” The smirk on his face was clear. This was not a one-sided thing.
Y/N’s thoughts swirled in her head. Was she missing something? Because unless she was hallucinating, Sokka definitely just kissed her back and then acted like it was normal for two best friends to do that.
It didn’t matter what she was thinking, her mouth answered for her. “Well, no but–”
Sokka’s smile widened and Y/N blushed.
He reached out and grabbed her hand. “That’s great, let’s do it again.”
“But you’re my best friend! And Katara!” Y/N’s head felt it was going to explode. “Katara is my best friend too!”
She twisted her hand around, not pulling away but sliding their fingers to interlock them. She sat back down on the couch, trying to remember where she was before. Was she too close now? Too far away? She didn’t want to send the wrong message. What was the right message?
He smiled knowingly at her. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“Of course I know that...”
Sokka was slowly pulling her closer to him with the grip on her hand and Y/N was completely letting him.
This time when they kissed, she could feel him smiling against her lips. Not that Y/N wasn’t doing the same thing. Sokka! Her brain screamed. She was actually kissing Sokka and she liked it!
Y/N pulled away and let out a little giggle. She didn’t even have time to ask him what they were doing when Sokka pulled her back in for another kiss.
“Stop moving away from me,” He murmured. His thumb traced her jawline and the other hand was on her thigh.Y/N’s heart raced as she began to wonder how far this was going to go.
All thoughts were quickly dashed as Y/N parted her lips and Sokka slipped his tongue inside. She grabbed his wrists and pushed his hands off of her.
Sokka jerked away suddenly, his face a mask of horror, clearly concerned that somewhere he had crossed the line. However, Y/N was thinking the opposite. Maybe he hadn’t quite gone far enough.
She climbed over his legs to straddle him and pressed his hands into the back of the couch. Sokka’s eyes widened and Y/N gave a little shrug before she kissed the corner of his mouth. She trailed down his jawline and neck, placing soft kisses along the way. She stopped at his collarbone, leaving a love bite that made Sokka groan.
Y/N let go his hands to take out his ponytail because she just wanted to run her fingers through his hair like she knew he liked. Sokka took that opportunity to grab her waist and pull her closer, as if they weren’t already flush against each other.
They were kissing again, hard, as if this was the only thing left in the world. Sokka’s teeth clacked painfully against hers but it didn’t stop either of them. They just needed to be closer. Just them. Together. Sokka’s hands roamed over her body, never stopping in once place for too long, like he was trying to make up for lost time that he wasn’t able to touch her in this way.
Y/N broke away even though every muscle in her body told her not to and sat back on Sokka’s thighs. Sokka swiped a thumb over her bottom lip and Y/N grinned.
She shook her head in disbelief as she tried to wrap her mind around the last few minutes. Her fingers traced over his cheekbones and jaw as she tried to memorize this feeling of pleasure and excitement in one. She needed to remember the look in Sokka’s eyes in case this never happened again.
“How did we get here?” She asked softly.
“I think it was a long time coming.” Sokka mirrored the smile on her face.
“Yeah?”
“We’re more than friends and you know it. Always have been.”
“Well, I wish you would have said something sooner,” Y/N pouted. “We could have been doing this a long time ago.”

Tumblr media
His hand dropped to his car keys in his pocket, ready to leave if you needed him.

life changing field trip
Tumblr media
summary: Zuko really does take people on the most interesting adventures
word count: 1320
a/n: so this was a request but i kinda added onto it so it was originally a ‘there was only bed fic’ but now it’s a fake dating spy fic and a ‘there was only one bed fic.’
“It’d be really helpful if we had someone on the inside to help us break through the borders,” Sokka said as he looked over a map of the earth kingdom city you were trying to free from the fire nation.
“Like a spy?” You questioned and his eyes lit up with excitement.
“Yeah, exactly! We need a spy! Thank you so much for volunteering for this mission, Y/n!”
“Wait no I didn’t-” However your protests went unheard as Sokka laid out a plan for this spy mission. “But Sokka we can’t just send Y/N into the city by herself. It’s too dangerous.” Katara glanced over at you with a look of concern.
“I know, that’s why Zuko’s going with her.”
“I- I am?” He looked as bewildered as you felt as he leaned over you to try and get a better look at Sokka’s ‘plan’. You knew why Sokka had chosen Zuko, a couple weeks ago you had made the misguided decision to tell him about your crush on the fire nation prince.
“This is so unfair. Why does everyone but me get to go on a life changing field trip with Zuko?” Toph complained from where she was sprawled out on the ground.
You crossed your arms, shooting a glare at Sokka, grumbling “It better not be ‘life changing.’”
“Your mission, should you choose to accept it-”
“I can choose not to go?”
“NO, Y/n you’re taking all the fun out of this! I’ve never gotten to plan a spy mission before.” You shared a look with Zuko as Sokka whined, he was enjoying this mission far too much.
Sokka straightened up, clearing his throat, “Anyway as I was saying before I was RUDELY interrupted,” He paused, shooting a glare at you, “You and Zuko will be impersonating a high ranking fire nation husband and wife.”
Your eyes widened, “Husband and wife as in a couple? Like dating?”
“As in married actually, but yeah you can pretend to be in a relationship for a couple of days, right?”
Zuko answered before you could finish processing your thoughts, “Of course. I mean it shouldn’t be too hard.”
You were painfully aware of Zuko’s hand on your lower back as he handed the forged invitations over to the guard, who didn’t even glance at them, before stepping aside and letting you in.
Zuko leaned down, his breath hitting the back of your ear as he whispered,“They’re not expecting trouble, we can use that to our advantage.”
“Or maybe that guy’s just really bad at his job.”
He nudged you with his shoulder, “That’s the commander over there, the information we need is most likely in his office. We just need a distraction so we can search for it.”
Your response died in your throat as the commander spotted you and began marching over to you. Zuko must have sensed your nerves as he grabbed your hand, lacing his fingers through yours and reassuring rubbing his thumb over the back of your hand.
“Ah you must be General Sorak.” He paused, his gaze shifting over to you, “And who is your guest?”
Zuko smiled at the commander, introducing you as his wife with the fake name Sokka had come up with. The commander smiled brightly at you before addressing Zuko again, “You’re visiting us during a very joyous time, in fact we’re throwing a masquerade ball tomorrow night to celebrate our victory. A maid will be over soon to show you to your room.” And with that he left, disappearing down a dark corridor. You glanced at Zuko out of the corner of your eye, “We’re staying for the ball, aren’t we?”
He shot you a playful grin, “Why the long face? Surely dancing with me can’t be that terrible of a fate, Love?” You turned to look at him only to immediately forget what you were going to say when you realised exactly how close he was. You felt light headed as he moved closer, his lips ghosting over yours only for him to abruptly pull away to speak to the maid you hadn’t noticed. His arm slipped around your waist as you followed the maid down the dark hallway to your room. Sending her a thankful smile over your shoulder as Zuko all but dragged you into the room. You felt your heart drop to your stomach as you took in the room, specifically the lone bed that stood in the centre of the room. Oh Sokka was going to be a dead man for forcing you to go through this.
It was nightfall before you knew it and now you were standing in front of the door to your room trying to convince yourself to go in. It had gotten to the point where you had seriously started considering if anyone would notice if you just slept outside when the door swung open revealing Zuko’s form leaning against the doorframe, “How long have you been out here?” You grimaced, shrugging at him, slipping under his arm and into the room. He closed the door, leaning against it, “What were you doing out there?”
“Oh you know, just thinking.”
He raised an eyebrow, an amused smile tugging at his lips, “About what?”
“Nothing.” You could feel the heat rushing to your face under his intense stare.
“So you stood out there for at least an hour just thinking about nothing?”
“Yes?” He pushed himself off the door, flopping down on the bed as his gaze followed you around the room.
You walked around to the other end of the bed, reluctantly lying down next to him.
Somehow you didn’t even notice your body subconsciously shifting closer to him until you were practically on top of him. His arm slipped around your waist, tugging you closer as you rested your head on his shoulder. “What are you doing?”
“You took all the pillows so I’m using you as one.” Absentmindedly tracing shapes on his chest as you answered him.
“Dance with me.” You tore your eyes away from the crowded ballroom to meet his gaze.
“Hate to disappoint but I can’t dance.” You gave him a tight lipped smile before returning to surveying the room. However you discovered that he wasn’t about to give in that easily as he stepped in front of you, taking your hands in his. “Then just let me lead.”
“An interesting thing to be stubborn about.”
He released your hands as his hands found your waist, gently tugging you closer to him, “I just want to dance with my wife, is that so much to ask?”
He took your silence as an answer, pulling you onto the dance floor with him, intertwining your left hand with his as his other hand settled on your lower back. The corners of his mouth turned up into a smile as he pulled you closer, “Rumour has it… I make you nervous.”
“W-who told you that?” He was almost uncomfortably close and you prayed that he couldn’t feel your heart racing.
“That’s not really the point, is it Sweetheart?” He leaned down slightly, his lips ghosting over yours for a brief moment before he pulled back.
You’d ended up on the other side of the room somehow and then he was lacing your fingers together and pulling you down the dark hallway and into an empty room.
“Where are we?”
“Commander’s office.”
You found the files detailing the city’s weak points pretty quickly, Zuko had been right, they weren’t expecting trouble.
“Zuko, come on, let’s go.”
“Wait I just need to do something first.”
“Wh-,” Whatever retort you had went unheard as his lips were suddenly on yours, kissing you passionately, your hands wrapping around his neck, pulling him closer.
Sokka had a smug grin plastered on his face as Zuko helped you up onto Appa’s saddle, “Soooo how was the mission?”
“It was.... Life changing.”
