Swing Dance
Summary: Freed hasn’t danced in months, but when he hears people talking about the new neighbor’s dance skills, he changes his mind. [1940 AU]
Link: AO3
Notes: Hei! This is my first contribution for the Fraxus Week. Prompt: dance into summer and dancing in the rain.
Swing Dance
Freed could hear the music getting louder with every step he took. It was across the street from the jazz club, the street lamps lighting up the sidewalk, and the summer heat that didn’t help his situation. Maybe he should have left his jacket at home, or taken off his bow tie and left his shirt open. But by now it was too late to think about it.
When he arrived in front of the room, the door swung open making him hear the voices of the people and the trumpets sounding happily. The girl who had opened it stopped, and a huge smile filled her face.
“Good evening, Mr. Justine” she greeted him, arranging her headband.
Freed took off his hat, nodding slightly.
“Good evening,” he said with a polite smile.
“I didn’t think I saw you here,” she revealed with slightly red cheeks. She probably had been dancing up to that point, judging by her accelerated breathing.
“Why?” Freed asked with slight amusement, although he already imagined the answer.
“Well, I don’t see you at such parties more often. And it’s a shame, because it was fun to dance with you,” she revealed, the blush in her cheeks deepening. Maybe it wasn’t just because she had danced, after all.
“I heard there’s no shortage of fun,” Freed retorted. “I hear all the women chatting about Mr. Dreyar’s dancing skills,” he joked.
“Oh, he can’t compete with you,” the girl said quickly, and Freed almost laughed. He wasn’t really envious, his joke was genuine, and actually the reason why he had come there was that man. Obviously, no one would ever suspect it.
“Do you mean you danced with him?” Freed teased and the girl stammered something for a moment, and then she laughed embarrassed.
“I couldn’t refuse!” she exclaimed. “But I’m still convinced that you are the best dancer. Are you going to dance tonight?” she asked hopefully.
“I’m not sure,” Freed said. “But don’t stop dancing, I don’t want to stop you from having fun,” he smiled at her, and the girl lit up her face. Freed walked through the door, and as he walked into the room, the sound of the piano and heels pounding to the music filled his ears.
He continued around the room, avoiding the girls dancing in full, long skirts, past the tables at which the women were seated seeking wives for their daughters, and the husbands who flaunted their riches in sumptuous robes and elaborate mustaches.
Freed got to the middle of the room when something caught his attention. Under the stage where the musicians played, not far from the piano, Freed could see the man who had conquered the hearts of all the girls of Magnolia. A man who had also won his heart, ever since he had smiled at him from his red Cadillac, parking under Freed’s house and introducing himself as his new neighbor.
A man who had all the characteristics to win the respect of anyone, which is why all mothers tried to push their daughters to marry that charming, rich, and wealthy man. A man who had returned from the war and had started a business. A man who with a single smile could conquer anyone, without even having to say a word.
But, more importantly, a man with a generous heart, because Freed had seen him feed children in search of food, and help an elderly lady cross the house. Freed was also quite convinced that Mr. Dreyar had adopted a cat, and if he hadn’t, he was sure to feed him, as Freed saw that stray cat walk past his terrace every morning to reach the house next door.
And now that man was dancing with a girl, spinning her to the rhythm of the music, with the piano playing and the drummer beating on the cymbals. The man lifted the girl, her skirt twirled, and then brought her back to the ground in a casque. The girl laughed, and Laxus pulled her back to her feet.
And then, the man looked up.
It was only a moment, but for Freed it was as if the world had stopped around the two of them. Their eyes met and Laxus smiled at him. A charming and genuine smile that seemed to be aimed only at him.
It finished quickly, because another girl approached Laxus to be able to dance, and Freed turned, reaching the counter.
“What do you want to drink, Mr. Justine?” the bartender asked.
“A martini, thank you,” Freed ordered, sitting down in a chair and trying not to turn back to look at Mr. Dreyar. Instead, he looked around, seeing the place was full. There were couples dancing at every corner, those who didn’t dance were drinking, or chatting animatedly. Women were gossiping, men were talking about business, and college girls were trying to get some boys’ attention.
And Laxus Dreyar, well, he was still dancing. Handsome as always, in his white suit, he was spinning a girl who seemed like the happiest person in the world.
Freed looked away before he was caught watching, and took a sip of his drink, deliberately ignoring the college girls who looked at him with curiosity and awe. He was used to it, and months ago Freed would have asked them to dance, giving them and himself an evening of fun, but he was no longer interested.
“Good evening, Mr. Justine.”
Freed looked up in surprise, finding his neighbor half a meter away. Always with that look that completely captured him.
“Good evening,” Freed gave a small nod.
“Aren’t you dancing?” Laxus asked, sitting down opposite him and resting his elbow on the counter. A tuft of hair had escaped the gel and Freed wondered how even that way that man could be so handsome.
“Looks like you stole all my women.” Freed smiled as if in explanation, and Laxus laughed.
“Oh, really,” he said sarcastically, and then a light shone in his eyes. “Just say you can’t dance.”
“Excuse me?” Freed frowned with amusement.
“Yes, that’s the reason I’ve never seen you dance. You are so busy making a name for yourself in your field...”
“I’m already a successful lawyer,” Freed interrupted, and Laxus just smiled but didn’t stop talking.
“That you have forgotten how to have fun. I’m serious, you come here, drink and watch the others dance?” Laxus leaned slightly towards him, and Freed instinctively did the same.
“I’ll let you know I’m the best dancer around,” he retorted.
“In slow-dances, maybe,” Laxus smiled. “But I’m sure you can’t do a step of swing, am I wrong?” It seemed that he was getting closer, and Freed stopped, because being too close to that man was dangerous.
“You’re wrong,” he said without hesitation, and if he didn’t flinch when Laxus bowed his head towards him, it was only out of pride. Damn pride, because now Freed could see the specks in Laxus’ eyes and feel his breath against his lips. He really would have done better to get away.
“Prove it then” Laxus’ voice came out low and hoarse, completely enthralling Freed. His eyes darted quickly to Laxus’s lips, then scanned his shaven cheeks and his gaze. Freed briefly wondered what it would be like to be free to dance with him, or to kiss his scar.
Laxus was still getting closer, and Freed didn’t know if it was the lights or the music or the alcohol, but Laxus seemed so close, and that smile was so captivating and...
“Follow me,” Laxus said, rising from the chair.
Freed blinked for a moment confused and perplexed, and remembered that he was not in a small room, but in the middle of a club where jazz was playing.
He didn’t wonder why Laxus wanted him to follow him, or why he should accept, but Freed followed.
Laxus left the room through a back door, walked a short distance under a porch and after a few meters entered a small room. Judging by the number of tools, it had to be a warehouse.
Freed frowned as he looked around trying to understand the situation.
“Why we are here?” he asked.
“Show me you can dance,” Laxus challenged.
“What?” Freed laughed, finding it absurd.
“I’m serious,” Laxus said and Freed stood motionless for a moment. It was an absurd situation, he, a respectable man, was in a warehouse with a southern man who had just asked him to dance. Freed could still hear the background music, the singer’s intense voice and the drums giving the rhythm, and maybe that was what gave him the courage.
“Good,” he said, and began. Initially awkward, and only because he was a little embarrassed dancing alone, but when he saw that Laxus was looking at him as if captured by his figure, courage flooded him.
Freed reached out to Laxus, and the man followed him instantly.
Freed almost didn’t believe what was happening, and if he was continuing to dance it was only because his feet were moving by themselves, knowing that dance by heart. He smiled slightly when he met Laxus’ face, and was a little surprised to see that Laxus did a twirl when Freed instinctively twisted his arm, used to being the one he drove.
Until Laxus lifted him off the ground. At that point Freed lost his rhythm, and when his feet hit the floor again, Freed had to hold on to Laxus’ shirt for a moment to keep from falling. He looked up feeling the warm face, and then burst into a happy laugh, because that was funny.
And Freed walked away again, the footsteps resuming, in a dance that was a continuous back and forth. And that was different than before, because now Freed knew he could get close to Laxus. It was also unlike any dance Freed had done before, because there was no clear-cut limit to their roles. When Freed made Laxus do a pirouette, he did it smiling joyfully at him, and when Laxus lifted him off the ground, Freed let him do it, only to be carried in a casque, directly in the arms of that wonderful man.
The pace was picking up, the footsteps getting faster, the trumpets louder, and Freed could hear the pianist tapping the keys, their footsteps echoing around the room. The end of the song was close, Freed knew, and he didn’t want it, he didn’t want it to end, he wanted to stop this moment forever, print Laxus’ smiles in his mind, imprint their touches on his skin, and repeat that dance forever.
But the music was advancing, the trumpets echoing, and before Freed could even know it, the drums marked the end of the song.
And it all ended.
Freed, pulled against Laxus’s chest, with a strong arm holding him by the waist, and the man’s lips pressed to him.
The next song began but all Freed could hear was the heart pounding in his ears, Laxus’ soft lips and his scent getting him drunk.
It was overwhelming, like nothing had ever been before, and Freed knew he was completely in love. Completely and irremediably in love with the neighbor who always smiled at him from his Cadillac, with the man who greeted him every evening from the terrace, with the businessman who touched his hat every morning as a sign of greeting.
“Wow,” was the only thing Freed managed to sigh as their lips parted. They were still close, but neither of them was starting the kiss again, both still out of breath. Freed couldn’t even let go of Laxus’s embrace - not that he wanted to - because his arm was still there, holding him still.
Freed’s heart was still beating wildly, and he didn’t know if from the fatigue of the dance, or from the incredible kiss they had shared.
“So, Freed,” Laxus began, and his name had never sounded so good. Not Mr. Justine, not Mr., just Freed. “Do you want to go to the lake tomorrow?”
And Freed kissed him.
-Fifteen years later-
Freed never imagined his life would be like this. He had always been convinced that he would marry a woman, buy a house in the city, and have one or two children to pass on his profession.
Instead, he was in the countryside, the stray and old cat was dozing on the carpet, while he was sitting with his head resting against his partner’s chest. The radio was playing what must have been rock ‘n roll music, if Freed remembered correctly, as the rain poured down on the porch above them.
“I like this music,” Laxus murmured as he gently ran his fingers along Freed’s hips.
“Mh, I prefer jazz,” Freed said.
“Old man,” Laxus chuckled in his ear and Freed smiled.
“You’re older than me,” he reminded him.
“Maybe, but you look older.”
“Just pretend you’re still young,” Freed teased, and Laxus snorted lightly, but didn’t reply. Instead, he continued to run his fingers smoothly over Freed’s shirt, stroking his side as Freed turned the page.
Rock music ended, and after a brief news, the music started again. This time, however, it wasn’t rock, but old and beloved jazz.
“You remember this song, right?” Laxus smiled.
“If you think this is the one we danced to the first time, you are wrong. You’re really getting old.” Freed smiled in amusement, and Laxus pinched his side. Freed glared at him but Laxus smiled.
“So, you don’t remember, who’s the old man now?”
“You’re wrong. It’s a similar song, but it’s not this one,” Freed repeated stubbornly.
“No, this is that song, I assure you. And I still remember how to dance, do you do it? Or are you too old for that?” Laxus challenged him, and Freed smiled. He had been his lover for ten years, and he still couldn’t be romantic with words. Honestly, Laxus was lucky to have that charming smile.
“You already challenged me once, and I proved you wrong,” Freed reminded him.
“Yes, and I still won,” Laxus smiled. Freed frowned slightly, and looked behind him only to meet the sweet and loving gaze of his partner, who looked at him as if he were looking at the most important person in his life.
Freed smiled softly.
“And you say you’re not romantic,” he muttered, taking Laxus’ jaw and kissing him slowly.
Laxus reciprocated, and when they parted, he stood up, forcing Freed to do the same as he was leaning against him.
“What are you doing?” Freed complained.
“Let’s dance,” Laxus said, grabbing his hand and pulling him close to him. The book fell from Freed’s hands onto the cat’s tail, which meowed plaintively at the two. “Sorry,” Laxus murmured as if the cat could understand. The cat went back into the house as Laxus and Freed began to move on the porch.
Laxus twirled Freed, who smiled slightly before approaching him again, placing a hand on Laxus’ chest, and leaving him a fleeting kiss on the lips, before walking away again with a mischievous and amused smile.
Laxus laughed and began a continuous approach and then move away, both of them leaving brief kisses before putting distance between them. The steps were less precise than they used to be, rain was pouring around them, and the radio playing that old jazz song occasionally skipped due to the storm.
Freed could not have imagined a more wonderful life.

FraxusWeek Day 2
Dragon hoards

The five proposals Freed Justine rejected and the one he did accept.
Fraxusweek by @fuckyeahfraxus day 7, with the prompt being  :  Proposal/Wedding/Engagement
1. A girl who's confused, but has got the spirit.
It's a precarious situation and Laxus doesn't know how to solve it. They've got the bad guy of the day cornered, but instead of going along willingly, the man thought it a good idea to get civilians involved. Quickly, the perpetrator had seen that there was no way to get out of his situation, with Laxus, Bickslow and Evergreen trapping him against the side of a building. So he had wrangled a little girl out of her screaming mother's grip and now, he has his one hand wrapped around her throat while he waves a weapon around with the other one.
To her credit, the little girl isn't going down without a fight, kicking and screaming as the situation keeps escalating. If the man wasn't wearing a mask, Bickslow probably could've done something about it. Brainwashing the girl herself is out of the question, as she's more likely to injure than save herself. Opening fire upon the man is completely out of the question, so now they're all stuck.
Rest of the fic under the cut!
The answer comes in the form of their ever so dependable captain kicking down the door from the inside, effectively smashing it into the man who had unwittingly been shielding the little girl from stray doors suddenly opening. With a dull thud, the man falls to the floor, unconscious.
As Bickslow and Evergreen cheer their captain on for a job well done, Laxus catches the surprise in his eyes and the 'oops' he silently mouths before looking around. When Freed comes to the conclusion that his habit of tresspassing for fun has not gotten him into trouble for once, he smiles at his teammates while telling them of the importance of 'seeing all the options' amongst other things. Later, in private, he'll tell the little shit that he knows he's full of bull, but for now Laxus will let him gloat.
Starry-eyed, the now saved little girl tugs on Freed's jacket, narrowly avoiding getting clocked by his sword. "Mister, you saved me!" she says and Freed nods with more confidence than he should have, considering his heroic act was one of mere coincidence.
"That means you have to marry me", she says in a matter of fact voice that throws all of them off. "That's what my books say", she continues before throwing a hopeful glance at Freed.
Behind his back, Freed makes a tiny gesture with his hand and with a bit of magic, he hurls a rather concerningly large rock at Laxus. Swiftly, he moves between Laxus and the rock, fending it off with his rapier. "Well young lady", he says, turning to the girl. "Now I have saved this man as well and now I have to marry him too. I hope you don't mind sharing."
With all the huffy- and puffyness girls that age usually possess, she turns her head harrumphs. "No, I don't like sharing. I'm not settling for trash", she continues, giving Freed the stinkeye. "So our engagement is called off, goodbye my sweet prince", she dramatically sighs before joining her mom. She does wave them all goodbye though, so that's a nice bonus.
2. A girl who isn't confused and hasn't got the spirit.
The second time Freed gets proposed to, it isn't even done by the bride to be. No, the bride to be stands there somberly, as her father tries to offer Freed her hand. "Surely", the man says, "A handsome young man such as yourself wouldn't refuse a gorgeous young lady. She knows how to cook and keep quiet, what else do you want?"
There's a quick flash of anger in the daughter's eyes and anger radiates off Freed as well, although he's more apt at hiding it. It's only because Laxus knows him so well that he knows how the other man really feels.
"What else I want?" Freed asks, voice carefully leveled before throwing on the biggest of smiles. "Why, your son would be a good place to start. He's gorgeous as well and I bet he's a fast learner, we could make our dinner together before having a ménage à trois in our kitchen."
The words immediately hit home and before they know it, the four of them are hightailing it out of there, but not before Freed has pressed a vial with suspicious liquid into the girl's hand with a whisper of: "Please feel free to use this however you want."
3. The spirit.
As far as Laxus knows, the party gathered in front of him is reaching the peak of their little roleplay game. He has no idea what they're actually prattling about, but Freed looks happy playing whatever it is, so of course he's there too. Although he isn't participating and merely laying his head down on Freed's lap, as he's done the past few session, he can kind of tell what's going on based on observations and little comments Freed gives now and then.
Wendy is narrating the story and honestly, her youthful spirit adds a gentle touch to it. Levy, Lucy, Mira, Freed and for some reason, Gray and Loke are the nerds participating and rolling dice. Throughout the story, familial bonds have been formed and right now, they're on the cusp on something more than just familial.
Loke and Freed's characters have been flirting since pretty much the first session. Laxus really doesn't mind, because he trusts Freed and also because both men are making a competition out of it. It keeps Freed sharp, so to speak and he only becomes better at flirting with Laxus in return. It's ridiculous how smooth he is sometimes.
In-game, Loke has proposed to Freed and the whole group is hollering and shouting until Loke rolls the dice. Then they fall silent, so naturally, Laxus presumes something bad has happened. Calmly Wendy shoots the group a warm smile before saying: "Alberion (the name of Freed's character) panics, thinking he's gotten too close to the enemy. He shoots Guryon (Loke) and flees, back to the dark castle where he was born and raised!"
A series of whats and hows raises from the group while Freed and Wendy bump fists. Seeing the indignant expression on the rest of the players' faces, Wendy merely shrugs. "It was on his character background sheet", she explains and leaves the group to deal with the betrayal.
4. A man who's had too much spirit.
"Justine, marry me", Hibiki Lates sobs into Freed's shoulder as Laxus watches in amusement. His boyfriend is looking mildly annoyed at the overly intoxicated man, but there's a hint of fondness in the set of his lips.
"Now why would I do that?" he asks with a sigh and Hibiki immediately straightens his back before putting a USB-stick into Freed's hand.
"There's a powerpoint on there", he explains before starting to list his good qualities. "I'll start with the main reason why you should marry me: I'm really, really cute."
"That's what you're going with? Not our 1 week relationship when we were both fifteen?"
"No, because we broke up you dumbass", Hibiki says before headbutting Freed harder than probably intended. "You're not good at providing comfort, I'm gonna look for someone else", he mopes before stalking off. Before disappearing from view completely, he turns around to yell at Freed. "This is why our teenage romance didn't last!" Both of them end up snorting and laughing about it.
5. A man who's lost his spirit.
To say he's nervous is a serious understatement. Laxus has been planning this proposal for months now, has lost a significant amount of sleep over it and will probably cry if even the littlest of details goes wrong. He's stressed beyond belief.
For now, everything seems to be moving in the right direction. His reservation at the expensive seaside restaurant hasn't magically been cancelled and the clothes he'd set aside for today still fit nicely. Freed has also been going along with Laxus' plans without demanding to know what they're doing. Seemingly sensing Laxus nervousity, he simply follows wherever Laxus directs him to be.
The first thing that nearly goes wrong, is transportation and Laxus really has no idea how that even happened. He planned this whole thing while giving his own weaknesses no thought. As the carriage had pulled up, Freed had commented how nice it looked before giving Laxus a teasing smile, while telling him how good it was that that carriage wasn't for them, as Laxus would've puked all over it.
Immediatle, he blanches and Freed, bless his heart picks up on it. He waves the carriage off, which isn't a problem since Laxus already paid for it and then sets up some transportation runes. "Just imagine the place where we need to be and we'll be taken there", he instructs Laxus.
The seaside view is luckily just as gorgeous as in the pictures and Laxus feels the repeated crashing of the waves soothing his mind. Maybe it would go alright after all. The two of them settle in their chairs and look at the menu, commenting on some of the stranger recipes. Swiftly Laxus decides what he wants to eat and puts the menu down to ask Freed for his choice.
It's then that he catches Freed drumming his fingers on the table while biting his lip. He's also tapping his feet, so Laxus knows that he's essentially screwed. "Is there something wrong?" he asks, nervousity returning in full swing.
"Ah...It's just a little something that hasn't really been brought up." Catching Laxus' questioning gaze, Freed winces a little bit. "I'm allergic to seafood. Deathly allergic actually", he admits sheepishly and Laxus wants to dig a hole in the ground and take a nap in it. "Don't make that face", Freed gently chastises him. "This trip isn't wasted." With a grin, he browses through the menu until he's found what he's looking for. Triumphantly he turns the booklet around to show Laxus the dessert section. "You best believe I am testing out as much of these bad boys as I can. I don't believe they'll put fish in there."
After something that could be counted as some form of a meal, the two of them want to take a walk on the beach. They are however dressed to the nines and after a brief moment of consideration, they come to the conclusion that neither of them wants to clean all the sand out of these clothes, so they let a walk on the sand itself drift from their minds for today. Instead they walk on the pavement until the sun sets.
During their walk, Laxus thinks that now would be a good time to propose. The setting sun is the perfect background and he bets it'd look really romantic if he were to pop out the rings right about now. Right about then, is when he realises he left the rings at home. After vehemently checking each and every one of his pockets, it's clear that a proposal isn't going to happen. To highlight this fact, the wind starts picking up and Laxus knows a gathering storm when he sees one. Defeated, he sits down on the sidewalk.
With more pep than Laxus'll probably feel for the rest of the week, Freed plops down next to him and lays his head on Laxus' shoulder. "My dear, do you want to cry about it?" he asks and honestly, he wants to but they're in public. Crying in front of Freed is one thing, crying in front of a crowd is another thing. "It's good that it's going to rain then", he adds gently before taking his head of Laxus' shoulder and opening his arms. "Get over here sweetheart."
It's a bit embarrassing, sitting there in the now full-on storm and crying while his boyfriend cradles him in his arms. But it feels too good to pass on, so he doesn't let go until he feels somewhat placated.
"My dear Laxus", Freed says softly but still audible over the storm, "You could ask me to marry you in the back of a dumpster and I'd wholeheartedly say yes. But you worked hard on this, didn't you? I'll keep that effort in mind. So ask me another day, when your nerves have calmed down. I just want to tell you now, I love you and I always will."
6. Two spirits, a shared love.
This time around, there are no theatrics or outrageously expensive restaurants. It's a simple breakfast prepared by Laxus, one he knows Freed'll like. After sliding the last egg on a plate, he goes upstairs to try to coax Freed out of bed for the third time this morning. A few languid kisses follow and reluctantly Freed follows, sticking close to Laxus because he is so very warm and comfortable.
"It's time for food, don't use me as your human blanket", Laxus softly admonishes him and Freed grumbles in return. With droopy eyes, Freed starts nibbling on his toast and although Laxus is very used to the sight of his boyfriend in the morning, it still elicits a smile from him.
"Yesterday I spent the day with Bix and he learned me some magic tricks", Laxus says and produces a set of cards out of his pocket. "Wanna see some?"
Vaguely interested, Freed hums and nods. Dutifully he picks out a card when Laxus asks him to and when Laxus asks him if he picked out Freed's card, the man shakes his head drowsily. "That isn't even a card Laxus, that's a box...", he complains quietly, yawning a bit afterwards.
"There is an accompanying card though", Laxus grins as he shoves the little box and the card to Freed side of the table. Predictably, Freed picks up the card first, reading the message and silently forming the words with his mouth.
Immediately the sleepiness seems to evaporate from his system as he quickly opens the box as well, revealing the rune-ingraved ring. Before even answering, he throws his arms around Laxus, planting a big, fat smooch on his lips before peppering a thousand little ones all over his face. "I love you", he gushes before collecting his thoughts a little bit. "And of course I'll marry you." They exchange some more kisses until Freed pulls back with a huge grin. "I'm going to brag to everyone. The guild, the lady at the grocer's, they'll be hearing it for months."
With a gentle tug, Laxus witholds the man from running out of the door in his bathrobe. "If they're going to hear about it for months, then you've got time to finish your breakfast, silly", he says warmly and Freed shoots him a cheeky smile and a wink in return.
