Bruno Barba - "Ma quale DNA?"

“Ma quale DNA” è un saggio scritto da Bruno Barba che ha uno scopo ben preciso: quello di screditare e affossare qualsiasi teoria evoluzionista presente nel calcio, atta a portare un peggioramento della qualità culturale e comunicativa di narrazione e giornalismo. Il termine specifico oggetto della critica da parte di Barba, docente di antropologia, è, appunto, “DNA”. Parlare di DNA in uno sport nel quale, come sosteneva Socrates, “può vincere anche il peggiore”, risulta un’operazione anacronistica, che assume intrinsecamente concetti razzisti, che vengono così trasfigurati nello sport più mutevole e intriso di socialità, rivoluzione, rispetto ed accettazione di tutti i tempi. Frasi come “Questa squadra ha la vittoria nel DNA” oppure “questa società ha carattere” non hanno motivo di esistere quando si tratta di raccontare, mediante studi  empirici, o più modernamente con storytelling e messe in scena televisive, uno sport creato dagli uomini e da essi continuamente plasmato, come se vivesse in uno stato di continua evoluzione interiore.

Non esiste  infatti, in primo luogo una “maniera” di giocare a calcio: Sacchi, per esempio, si ispirò al modello olandese per arrivare a far giocare come prima punta il sardo Virdis, e pretese fortemente l’acquisto  dell’emiliano Ancelotti dalla Roma, dando vita ad un modulo studiato per poter competere con le squadre di quel preciso periodo storico e sociale. Allo stesso modo, ci viene raccontata l’Italia del 1982, che fu capace di prendere le distanze dal calcio di Pozzo, il calcio “da alpini”  delle due Rimet vinte di fila e in grado di trovare aperture e spazi, alla faccia della costante retorica del catenaccio all’italiana.  

In “Ma quale DNA”, le parole come “sincretismo” e "partecipazione" hanno maggior valenza rispetto agli slogan che vengono continuamente  diffusi dai social e da una maniera di raccontare il calcio troppo spinta verso la celebrazione delle vittorie e delle imprese sportive del singolo, più  che nei confronti degli uomini nella loro collettività, con i loro pregi e i loro difetti, che le hanno compiute.

Il calcio non viene descritto come materia minore rispetto ad altri sport, soprattutto quelli che esaltano in modo più spiccato l’individualità : dal giocatore di terza categoria all’amatore, dalla vecchia gloria che sta finendo la carriera in Serie D al giovane promettente di qualche cantera europea, tutti vengono posti sullo stesso piano, grazie ad una ricerca socio-antropologica esaustiva e rivelatrice, frutto dell’immensa cultura e dell’estremo interesse scientifico che il docente alessandrino mette a disposizione dei propri lettori.

Stiamo parlando di un testo accademico e di tutt’altro che facile lettura, ma estremamente necessario, soprattutto per capire cosa significhi veramente parlare di calcio moderno. Essendo appena uscito, grazie alla lungimirante opera di Battaglia Editore, “Ma quale DNA” esamina ogni sfaccettatura antropologica del gioco del pallone, arrivando a parlarci degli ultimi Mondiali, disputati in Qatar, partendo dall’Homo Ludens di Huzinga per poi arrivare a Pavese, Gianni Brera e al Basaglia di “da vicino nessuno è normale”.  Perché il calcio, come gli uomini, è un fenomeno fluido, come fluida è la società nella quale prende vita e viene giocato ogni giorno, sul campetto di periferia come nelle grandi arene sportive.

Scrivere, raccontare e parlare di calcio dovrebbero essere, secondo Bruno Barba, pratiche veicolanti per trasmettere un’esperienza e, successivamente, interpretare i fenomeni che ne derivano. Saper descrivere il calcio per poi poterne parlare, saper individuare le cause tattiche per poter commentare un’azione sono operazioni che vanno ben più in là rispetto all’abbruttimento del linguaggio calcistico al quale siamo ormai da decenni abituati. Stiamo parlando di vera e propria fenomenologia, che non si scaglia a priori contro modernità e cambiamenti, in una retorica nostalgica ed ancorata al passato, me che ne entra a far parte in modo quasi naturale e descrittivo.

Raramente ho trovato un saggio calcistico che, in modo così naturale, eviti scontate sussunzioni e scada in effimere narrative nostalgiche per raccontare questo gioco. Se ovunque possiamo giocare a pallone, allora ovunque e a chiunque possiamo raccontarne le storie.

“Esiste una contraddizione di fondo tra il desiderio di formulare articolate teorie sui massimi sistemi calcistici e l’evidenza di alcuni fatti: se al novantesimo minuto della finale mondiale 1978 l’olandese Resembrink, invece che colpire il palo, avesse indirizzato la palla qualche centimetro più in là, sarebbe cambiata la storia di quella squadra arancione, dell’Albiceleste, e chissà persino il destino dell’Argentina e della sua infame dittatura.”

Ο Μποντουρης ήρθε να παιξει μετά από ειδική άδεια που του είχαν εξασφαλίσει στο γήπεδο Σερεφ στην περιοχή του #Besiktas. Είχε πολύ κρύο και Χιονίζει. Όταν τελείωσε το ματς κανενας δεν σκέφτηκε να τον πάει πίσω στην μονάδα του. Ξεκίνησε να πάει με τα πόδια και όπως ήταν ιδρωμένος και ζεστός από το ματς έχασε τις αισθήσεις του και τον βρήκαν τα ξημερώματα παγωμένο. Τον πήγαν στο νοσοκομείο αλλά μετά από μερικές ημέρες πέθανε και σε ηλικία 21 ετών. "Ξέραμε να τον φέρουμε να παίξει, αλλά δεν ξέραμε να τον επιστρέψουμε.." είπε μετά από χρόνια ένας παράγοντας της Γαλατασαραι. Ήταν ο πρώτος Λευτέρης του Τουρκικού ποδοσφαίρου. Μετά ήρθε κι άλλος... Sul lato opposto della strada fuori dalla finestra del mio ufficio, ci sono, in sequenza da sinistra a destra, lo studio di un fotografo, una parrucchiera e un bar. Fanno tutti e tre parte del piano terra di un antico palazzo grigio e perennemente in ristrutturazione. Il primo ad iniziare la giornata lavorativa è il bar, ovviamente, che trovo già aperto quando arrivo alla mattina. Poco dopo, magari mentre bevo il primo caffè brodoso della giornata, vedo il fotografo mettere la sua moto nel parcheggio all’angolo della strada, accanto al bar. Chiude il manubrio con un pesante lock nero, si toglie il casco ed entra a far colazione al bar, prima di alzare la serranda del suo laboratorio. Esce senza salutare, come se fosse un’azione autonoma scissa dalla sua personalità.  La parrucchiera è l’ultima ad incominciare.  Non appena le giornate incominciano a riscaldarsi, a metà mattina, il titolare del bar mette una piccola panchina di legno fuori dalla vetrina del locale, tra lui e la parrucchiera, e arriva sempre un po’ di gente a fare capannello. Il lunedì, l’argomento principale è lo sport, mentre già da giovedì iniziano le lamentele per il tempo che farà nel weekend e le incombenze con mogli e nipoti. Tra una cliente e l’altra, la proprietaria del salone esce e partecipa, seppur per poco tempo, a queste conversazioni, che attirano alle volte anche sei o sette nuovi astanti. Il fotografo invece non esce mai, se non per far capolino dall’uscio del suo studio e ridere delle cose vengono dette. Sempre verso metà mattina, il barista esce ogni giorno con un vassoio e porta caffè e cappuccino sia a lui che alla parrucchiera, che di quando in quando ordina anche qualcosa per le sue clienti, soprattutto acqua o tè freddo, se fa caldo. Quando entra qualche cliente nel salone, sento dalla mia scrivania il rumore del campanello della porta.

Rimanendo aperto anche durante l’ora di pranzo, facendo da piccola tavola fredda, il bar riceve consegne da parte dei corrieri anche per gli altri due negozi.  Di solito arrivano un paio di furgoni intorno all’una, a consegnare prodotti di bellezza e risme di plastica, quando la via è vuota e invasa dal sole, che sembra una strada di un villaggio del far west prima dell’inizio di un duello. Lasciano il rumoroso motore acceso, il barista esce, si fa lasciare il pacco sulla panca mentre firma la bolla d’accompagnamento e lo porta ai vicini non appena riaprono, intorno alle tre e mezza del pomeriggio. Lo fa sorridendo, ogni volta come se fosse la prima, allungandosi sugli usci e chiamando i due colleghi di attività col suo vocione dialettale da persona del Nord.

È un meccanismo perfetto, tenuto insieme dalla routine e, se vogliamo, dalla necessità di mantenere vivo il proprio lavoro. Siamo quotidianamente strattonati, contesi e sbatacchiati da necessità di guadagnare, malattie, impegni, visite mediche urgenti, divani, lavori in casa: da soli non ce la potremmo mai fare. Ogni giorno, tutto il giorno. Anche nel calcio è così, soprattutto nel tanto vituperato calcio moderno. In squadra, ormai, come se fosse una guida, ci vuole un tratto d’unione, una persona e un ruolo in grado di tessere le fila e dare costante sicurezza in caso di bisogno. Nel calcio di oggi, privo, ormai, di terzini puri, da 4-4-2 per intenderci, Robin Gosens è diventato questo tipo di calciatore. In difesa, sì, ma sempre presente anche quando bisogna dare una mano, servire chi sta davanti e chi, soprattutto, non ha la stessa continuità alle redini della squadra.  

Il calcio, come il lavoro, deve essere un diritto fruibile a tutti. Deve essere universale, non deve rifarsi ad utopie o fatalismi. Le concezioni olandesi prima e sacchiane poi del gioco del pallone si riflettono totalmente nelle teorie di squadra adottate da Gasperini dal 2017, anno in cui Robin Gosens arrivò all’Atalanta: non siamo una squadra milionaria ma possiamo farcela, almeno sotto l’aspetto del gioco. Basta lavorare. Gosens ha quindi dovuto, in quel cantiere sportivo ai piedi delle Alpi Retiche, sudarsi una maglia da titolare. Gli esterni a Bergamo non sono mai mancati, ma cercando quella maglia si è creato uno spazio su misura, efficace e duraturo.

È un ruolo, il suo, che nell’Atalanta è andato oltre il fare la classica “spola”. Gosens non è un “motorino” degli anni Novanta (vi ricordate Marco Sgrò e la noiosa dialettica sulla sua quasi servile instancabilità?) e non è nemmeno un “pendolino” degli anni duemila. Queste similitudini futuriste non si addicono ad un giocatore sensibile alla scienza tattica come lui. Empiricamente, il tedesco ha cercato sempre di partire da tentativi ed esperienze, per affinare il suo ruolo in campo. È un tedesco, uno abituato a pensare come porebbe pensare un illuminista europeo.

Questo si chiama lavorare.

Mi domando se le tre persone dalle quali siamo partiti, quando io non sono a lavoro, magari per i weekend, non cambino atteggiamenti nei confronti l’una dell’altra. Se per esempio il sabato mattina, con gli uffici della zona chiusi, i ragazzi delle scuole a casa ed i loro genitori indaffarati a fare spesa o a valutare le offerte negli autosaloni, non stentino a salutarsi. O se non programmino una consegna in un orario in cui il negozio è aperto, per non disturbare il vicino.

Nelle azioni di tutti giorni, che compiamo o che vediamo compiere, risiede il nostro far parte di un’umanità che non potrebbe mai resistere senza imparare da queste stesse azioni.

In Kick, Mitch Johnson shows us shared values and puts faces on the often overlooked workers in the garment industry - through the larger than life tale of one small boy’s hopes to be a football star.

I’ve been waiting to review this book until after I’d dried my tears and the full impact of the story had settled in.  I’m looking at the cover again and realising how much story is told in that one image.  We have a boy holding a football stood on top of a stack of crooked tower block buildings.  He is gazing out over a brightly lit city of perfect, glitzy skyscrapers.  The title of the book is written in yellow stitching.  It’s clear that this is a story of the haves and have-nots and that our protagonist is one of the latter.

Budi is a child living in the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia who dreams of being an international footballer even whilst working in a sweatshop factory, sewing football boots for people who can afford them. An unlucky kick of his ball sees him indebted to the Dragon, the corrupt overlord of Jakarta. We follow him as life delves him blow after blow all within a week of the event.  

But the hope of this novel shines as brightly as the lights of Jakarta. It is provided by the love of his family, who, though unbearably poor, are rich in strength and understanding. The epitome of his family’s values can be found in is his emotionally intelligent grandmother.  Her steadfast beliefs in looking passed the impossible to the possible, are imparted through her incredible stories that she tells him nightly.  They feed and sustain him in a place where actual food is not a guarantee every night of the week.  

Also in Budi’s corner is his insightful friend Rochy - who teaches Budi a perspective of the world that he would never otherwise understand.  There is genuine love between these two boys who will risk everything for each other.

The book does not shy away from the absolute horror and bloodiness of life in an earthquake riddled, government oppressed, corrupt society that has little value for the life of the poor.  But when you are left feeling that Budi’s dreams are realistic despite his circumstances, you know that the author has crafted a tale that, though all to real and current, shows us how humanity can rise above the darkest of times.
