🎼 мυѕι¢ мση∂αу : “i just had sex” -> the lonely island
[…] Trying feels like a fool’s errand. Not to be totally macabre about it or anything, she’s just tired of feeling stupid over people who aren’t worth it. Maybe it’s not even the people she feels stupid about, it’s more her own desperate hope that this time will be different. It’s never different. Sometimes it’s never anything at all. Oh, God, here she is, indulging in full-on ennui about the state of her love life—and love in general, even!—and her playlist kicks up with “I Just Had Sex” by the Lonely Island. It’s comedic timing like this that makes Stevie think maybe she really is living in a romantic comedy.
every(ish) monday i’ll be sharing song & artist recs name-dropped in my debut romcom, ᴡʜᴀᴛ’ꜱ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴠɪʙᴇ?

Realm of the Elderlings Ask Meme Thing
I was tagged by @tragediegh! Thanks so much! I haven't seen this one floating around in a long time!
Favorite Rote Book: It changes fairly often, but currently "Fool's Errand".
Why: It's the least harrowing Fitz book (yes I know he's pulled out of his quiet life and back into the fray of politics and intrigue and it comes at a great cost to one of his nearest and dearest). I just love how quiet it is, Fitz and the Fool's dynamic is top tier and Fitz is in an interesting place as a character and it has some of my favorite scenes and quotes in it. It reads like a romantic comedy in some ways. There's just so much to love about it.
Top Three Favorite Characters: This is a tough one! There are so many characters I love (it might be fun to do by Fitz books, LST and RWC honestly), but the ones who live in my brain rent free most days are always The Fool (all of their facets), Nighteyes and Fitz.
Top Three Least Favorite Characters: To say I agonized over this question for a long time would be an understatement. Hobb has such an incredible ability to write compelling dislikeable characters to the point where everyone adds something to the story even if you hate them. There are plenty of characters I find irritating though, but do I actually dislike them? No. There are only two characters I truly hate and the third I'm mentioning I just feel very apathetic about for the most part. I truly dislike/hate Kyle and Hest, and the third is Bee. I don't hate her, but I don't love her.
Favorite Ship (of the floating kind): Paragon, but I also love Ophelia.
Top Three Favorite Ships (of the people kind): I love so many ships both canon and non-canon and it also changes (except for Fitz x Fool, they're always a constant). Fitz x Fool are my everything always, Alise x Leftrin and Malta x Reyn (but shout-outs to Patience x Lacey, Burrich x Chivalry, Brashen x Althea, Malta x Nettle and Carson x Sedric too.). Truly I love how shippable RotE is across the board and the complexity of all of the relationships, issues and all.
Would you rather be Witted or Skilled? Honestly I see the benefits of both and if I could have both, I would pick that, but since I have to pick one, I'll pick Witted.
If you were Witted, what animal would you bond with? That depends on where I was living. If I was by the sea, dolphin, if I was on land a dog of some kind or a wolf possibly or a red-tailed hawk or possibly a horse and most likely a Friesan. But being realistic, some kind of canine.
Would you rather live in the Outislands, the Mountain Kingdom, the Six Duchies, Bingtown, The Rain Wilds, Kelsingra, Jamaillia, The Pirate Isles, or the Fool's Homeland? Another tough one! Probably either Bingtown or the Fool's Homeland (Mercenia I believe?). Realistically, I'd be a nomad and hop from place to place because they all interest me.
How were you introduced to the books? A close friend of mine from college read them and I was in one of those places where I looked at my shelves and nothing looked appealing, asked her for some recommendations and RotE was one of the series on the list (she didn't tell me it was 16 books at first) and I started it and the rest is more or less history.
Share a quote you love: Should I show you the tabs on my books? There are so many quotes I love, but I'll pick one or two.
'History is no more fixed and dead than the future. The past is no further away than the last breath you took.' Fool's Errand
"Don’t do what you can’t undo, until you’ve considered what you can’t do once you’ve done it." Assassin's Apprentice
"Leave the pain behind and let your life be your own again. There is a place where all time is now, and the choices are simple and always your own. Wolves have no kings" Royal Assassin
And so many more, but those came to mind first.
Tagging: I have no idea who has done this or who wants to do it, but if you love RotE, and you see this and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!

(Archive) Animated movie of the day: Up (2009)
Originally posted: January 15th, 2023 What makes life worth living? Is it the accumulated experiences we gain? The dreams and aspirations we set out to accomplish? Or maybe… something simpler? Can those dreams get in the way of what truly matters?
One of the most critically lauded Pixar films, the opening is so powerful most people would agree it's already a narratively satisfying experience, if a heartbreaking one. A sentiment I agree with: an entire married life of good and bad times, unfulfilled dreams intertwined with lovely everyday experiences, and the void that comes when one half of that whole parts. All in just seven minutes, it could have been a masterpiece of a short film on it's own merits.
Which provides an interesting contention point: some claim the movie peaks at that point and is followed by an underwhelming wacky adventure, which is kind of missing the point of the story. While you can discuss whether or not the execution was on part with such a striking opening(and I can see the decidedly sillier comedy clashing a bit with the surprisingly down to Earth drama of set up), the contrast is needed for the core of the film to shine. And shine it did: this was nominated by the Academy for Best Film when it came out. Even with their contempt for animation they couldn't deny it's greatness.
You need to feel how deep the loss of Carl is, and how ingrained his sense of failure to Ellie's dream is for it to dawn the stronger he is missing on the other things life still has to offer or have already offered him. How that grand dream never coming for her didn't stop her life being worth living by his side, as it's those small experiences that made it valuable. How to move on, keep going and meeting new people was the most meaningful way to embrace the true spirit of said dreamed voyage: an adventure to share with others you care for.
In the words of Doctor Seuss:
"Don't cry because it's over, be happy because it happened"
Tumblr media
Oh, fuck it. I wasn't planning on bleeding into another day but there's a LOT this movie does that makes it a masterful showcase of visual design and storytelling. From the different, subtle shifts in color grading that can completely change how the same space feels, to it's almost religious commitment to shape language and how that communicates character.
Sure, it's unsubtle but tells SO much about the contrast of personalities that it gets the point across without words. The fact Russel is round the same way Ellie's furniture is designed isn't a coincidence. Both in the general(his friendly nature) and in the specifics of the movie's conflict (his role being a new person for Carl to share his life with), the decision is pretty deliberate and pays off big time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Also explains why Charles Muntz is so triangular. Specifically triangles pointing downwards. Unstable, passionate. Dangerous. Tragic. The perfect foil for Carl, but arguably more so for Ellie. She could treasure the little things even if some of her wildest dreams couldn't be achieved, which made her life fulfilling. He couldn't move on from his own, so he gave everything away for a fool's errand.
Tumblr media
And of course, shape language gets reinforced with body language. One frame. You can really tell the kind of characters they are with just that.
Tumblr media
In case it's not obvious I love this movie. Some of it's comedy is a little too goofy for my taste, sure, but the overall package just hits the right way. Sure, it's romantic and it's central plot device doesn't lack a sense of the absurd, but those emotional peaks render any complaint I could have otherwise completely void.

I’m reading Fool’s Errand for the first time- are the Bresinga cats like the size of regular housecats that we have? Bigger? Mountain lion sized or smaller?
Fool’s Errand???!?! My favorite romantic comedy. Tbh I’m not sure of the answer but I always pictured them mid size like the size of a lab or something. Or even smaller. Idk I rented Tawny man from the lib so I can’t go back and look. Have fun 💖💖 tawny man trilogy of all time

People keep trying to defend the sylki ship by saying "But they don't share DNA , look there's a black and alligator Loki and the obviously can't share DNA." And it's like it would still be weird and bad if Loki hooked up with boastful or croki.
A metaphor for Self Love shouldn't be portrayed as romantic
there's not even any explanation given as to why or how LOKI is an alligator. in his universe is all of asgard also alligators? or are the frost giants alligators? did odin... adopt an alligator and force everyone to pretend he was a brother to thor? or was it a spell that went wrong, or did LOKI just decide one day to try it out and preferred it?
how about, why all of his variants look nothing like him to the extreme of even being portrayed as racially distinct? except for pres and maybe classic (since he's portrayed much older and the two actors do resemble one another physically); yet wanda's and strange's variants from the MoM trailers exactly match them physically?
the writers didn't bother to think about it, is my opinion. the alligator was chucked in for crack comedy value and it's an insult to THINKING to try and take it seriously and rationalise it. and it's not like tom couldn't have played multiple characters opposite himself.
the whole thing's a nonsense mess, and trying to form actual explanations from what we were offered in that contradictory pile of events they call a cohesive tv series is just a fool's errand. taking more than a cursory look at the story reveals so many plot holes and leads that don't go anywhere... misleads really. it becomes frustrating and even infuriating to attempt to create integrated sensible meta from it. trust me, we've really tried.
but alllllll that aside... whatever the genealogy of the other variants, sylvie is called laufeydottir. the show explicitly created her as a child of laufey, just as LOKI is. that makes them siblings and it just doesn't matter what you say about it. you can make all the dna arguments you like, in this case they simply fall apart from within the series' OWN lore.
so either ship them and own that you don't care about fantasy incest, or don't ship them for whatever reasons you don't (and mine are SO much more comprehensive than the incest angle) but don't lie to yourselves about who she is genetically.
as for self-love... loving someone who's not you is the very definition of NOT experiencing self-love. it's not even like the variant the series matches LOKI with resembles him, or has had any similar experiences. hers have been completely different right from birth it seems, with not even having had her heritage concealed from her. and the showrunners go to SUCH pains to underline how she's not LOKI, she's her own totally separate and unique person... she won't even let anyone call her that.
so no. it's not self-love, it never was, and the only reason they shoehorn remarks like that in there is because so many fans wanted LOKI to have a chance to stop hating everything about himself and experience some real emotional healing for the first time in his life.
still waiting...

❛ A FOOL NEVER LEARNS ❜ — JULY ‘64
Why Nick had decided to share his bad news with his wife before their flight, he couldn’t remember. Over the last few days — yes, he’d held onto the news for that long — he’d thought long and hard about how he was going to break things to her and every scenario he’d played in his head had him doing it after their short flight back to Los Angeles. They’d been in Vegas for the past week drinking, gambling, screwing, just having a good ol’ time. Whole weeks like that were few and far between for them these days, what with his work, her work, and the fact that they had two small children always waiting for at least one of them at all times. All things considered, that last week together had been a lot of fun, a huge success, if only Nick hadn’t fucked it all up at the end.    ❝ Baby, you know I would go if I could, ❞ he said, breaking the long silence. It was a calculated lie on his part. If it were up to him, she knew, he’d miss as many of her premieres as he could. Faye, of course, was now seated as far away from him in that rented ’63 Cadillac Fleetwood as possible. She’d been cuddled up with him, basking in the glow of a week well-lived, at the start of the drive. Now, she was pressed as close to the opposite rear door as possible. He knew if it were safe enough for her to go right through it just to get farther away from him, she’d do it.    Part of him — the foolish part — thought that this was partly her fault. Thought, but didn’t say. Originally, he thought to tell her later that day, when they were finally home and she was surrounded by happy things, like her children, and Rudy, her loyal golden retriever. But then she started talking about the premiere to her next film, a romantic-comedy he couldn’t remember the name of, which was just under two weeks away. Plenty of time, in Nick’s view. She started talking about her plans, what she was going to wear, how excited she was, etc. That’s when he let slip that he might not make it as her date. Of course, might was the word he used in situations like this to soften the blow. Faye knew just his mention of it all but guaranteed he wouldn’t be going with her.    As usual, Faye’s silence was deafening. Usually, after making a mistake or having a spat, he could retreat to the garage and pretend to work on one of their cars or his motorcycle. No matter what, she expected him to stay on their property and God help him if he left it without telling her, even if it was just to run an errand. She could be mad at him. Furious, even. But she still wanted him close. Even on those very rare occasions where she sent him to sleep on the couch, he’d have to scoot over and make room for her in the middle of the night because she’d eventually come to cuddle and be held. That’s just the way she was even after five years of marriage.    Now that he’d fucked himself, Nick knew that that short flight from McCarran back to Van Nuys was assured to seem like a long one. He had to hide the relief he felt when they finally rounded the last corner that would take them onto the most private part of the airfield. He could sense the relief coming from Tommy, too. Nick didn’t know for sure, but he could swear the man hadn’t looked back once since overhearing his boss drop the bad news to his wife. This was wise on Tommy’s part since he and Faye had known each other long enough now that he was no longer a stranger and thus no longer free from her attitude and scorn.    By the time the white limousine came to a stop, McCarran’s main terminal and the wide runways for commercial flights seemed far behind them. Ahead was the twin engine Beechcraft Nick usually used. Part white, part yellow, with green trim, Nick had been using that same plane for years now. He didn’t own it, of course. Together, he and Faye were rich enough, but this one was free and always available, so there was no need to buy their own. He couldn’t remember who actually owned it, or under which dummy compnay it was registered to. It didn’t matter. Even the pilots didn’t know. They just took the cash and kept their mouths shut.    Despite the scorching heat he knew was waiting for them right outside, Nick couldn’t get out of the car fast enough. Tommy couldn’t blame him, but he still did his job and made sure to tend to Faye’s door and wasn’t surprised when she gave him the silent treatment on her way out. Lucky for him, he wouldn’t be on the flight with them. His boss would have to endure that all on his own. Nick knew this, too, which was why he quietly watched as she headed for the plane on her own, in a huff, practically stomping her high-heeled feet up the folding stairs that led in. Unable to help himself, he stared at her toned legs as she went, which were on display thanks to her tiny, checkered shorts. Once she was out of sight, he decided to help Tommy with their bags.    Although the pilots already had the engine going and the propellers spinning, Nick was more than happy to take his time before joining his angry wife onboard.

dante/genevieve ship headcanons
I saw these and HAD to do them for Dante and Genevieve. @crybabyxprince you’ve created a monster and I hope you’re happy with yourself!!!
1. Who makes the first move and how? It’s kind of a mutual thing? They watch a movie one night, by themselves–Vergil is out running errands, Trish is… somewhere, Lady is on another job, and it just… happens.
2. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better? I would say Dante is the most insecure–boy has a shitload of trauma that makes him bounce around feeling like he isn’t good enough for her because of his demonic heritage and the things he’s done over the course of his life, anger and a little resentment that Viv had a normal life and she didn’t appreciate it before things happened, frustration because of the aforementioned emotions, and  feeling like he isn’t good enough for her because she’s good at so much. Also, their age difference. It isn’t huge, but it isn’t insignificant either–they’re both adults when they get together, but it still can weigh on Dante’s mind when he’s having a rough moment.
3. Who is the most romantic? Dante would try to be romantic, bless his dumb little heart, but Viv is usually embarrassed by most stereotypical displays of romance, like the roses and the hearts, etc. because she doesn’t like being the center of attention… until she does. It doesn’t mean she’s opposed to romantic gestures, just don’t make a huge scene or give her anything. She’s picky.
4. Who can’t keep their hands to themselves? Dante primarily, but Viv is not opposed to walking up to him and just… sticking her tongue in his mouth and absolutely going for it.
5. Who says ‘I love you’ first? Probably Viv… at least when they’re both awake. Dante may have whispered something in the dark of night when Viv was asleep.
6. Who would they ask if they ever had a threesome? Dante would ask. Viv actually has. (She was in a polyamorous relationship prior to her time at DMC)
7. What do they get up to on a night out? They rarely go out, actually, because they’re both homebodies, but when they do it’s with their friends, who like to turn up, so when in Rome… do a bunch of shots and wake up the next morning with a vague memory of stumbling home and a splitting headache.
8. What do they like in bed? Mutuality. Neither of them like feeling that their partner is somewhere else during the moment, so it’s important for them to always be present with each other.
9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other? Viv has been too drunk to walk in front of Dante, occasionally been stoned, puked her guts out for a variety of reasons, had wicked cramps, nearly crapped her pants, had migraines, been sick, been injured, you name it. Dante’s been impaled a more than a few times and is just generally embarrassing whenever he has to apply his brain to something even marginally complex, or make a good impression on someone. Trying to talk to authority figures with him around is an absolute nightmare.
10. What two songs, two books and two luxury items do they take to a desert island? Bold of you to assume that Dante would bring a book, lol. Viv would bring a spellbook to try and portal them off of the island, and a bushcraft book to start covering the bases if they can’t. Dante would bring a guitar and a sword to hunt. Also, how would you bring a song? Like, one to sing? I don’t understand this part of the question :(
11. What do they hide from one another? Dante hides his insecurity behind a mask of bravado and flippancy; Viv hides hers behind ruthless organization and prep and competency. Dante hides his anger behind jokes; Viv pushes all her negative emotions down and throws herself into work.
12. What first changes when it starts getting serious? Dante gets extremely anxious about Viv participating in the business–she isn’t a combatant and never has been, but even her peripheral involvement in cases puts him on edge, because he doesn’t want anything to happen to her. Viv likewise gets anxious about Dante’s safety, but she trusts him to get back up if he gets knocked down. Mostly, though, they stop thinking about other people in romantic, or potentially romantic, frames of mind.
13. When do they realise they should get together? Neither of them have a lightbulb moment, so to speak–they fall into it over time, so gently. It takes Viv longer, but it’s when they both realize that no other person is a possibility. You’re it.
14. When one has a cold, what does the other do? Dante listens to Viv’s directions about what to do if she gets sick, because it’s not common for him to get sick. Viv will take care of Dante on the rare occasions he does get the flu, because she’s had a lot of practice.
15. When they watch a film what do they choose and why? Who gets the final vote? For the most part they choose comedies or horror movies, because they both like those genres. Viv likes to watch dramas and thrillers and foreign films–Dante doesn’t care, which is fine by her because she actually enjoys cinema and film on an intellectual level, and prefers to watch the movies she’s interested in by herself anyway. She likes dumb screwball comedies and scary spooky movies, but she’s also a little bit of a snob, tbh.
16. When the zombie apocalypse comes, how do they cope together? Dante handles the zombies–Viv handles the logistics and food, so… pretty much everything else.
17. When they find a time machine, where do they go? Viv goes to ancient Egypt, the Salem Witch Trials, pre-Christian Europe, the Bering land bridge, Pangaea… she’d want to go everywhere. Dante would like to see ancient Egypt too, and also the raising and sealing of the Temen-ni-Gru.
18. When they fight, how do they make up? They apologize, sincerely. Hugs are usually involved. Occasionally kisses, and often an act of service, like making Viv a cup of tea or getting Dante’s weapons ready.
19. Where do they go on their first date? Hiking, because Viv likes to hike, and Dante tags along.
20. Where do they go on holiday? They don’t take many vacations, but Viv likes to go to isolated places with a lot of natural scenery and Dante likes to see her drool over it, so if they can get away they can go somewhere quiet. Dante doesn’t mind not being in a city, but he does need to have something to do–hiking, surfing, skiing, etc. He can’t just go into the middle of nature and meditate. Boy’s gotta have an activity.
21. Where do they get nervous about going with one another? Viv feels like she sticks out like a sore thumb if she goes along to one of Dante’s shady haunts. On the other hand, Dante starts sweating bullets if he has to go anywhere even remotely normally respectable, like the school where Viv works with Kyrie, or dealing with law enforcement or some such.
22. Where does their first kiss happen? On the couch, while they’re watching a movie. See no. 1.
23. Where is their favourite place to be together? Viv likes Devil May Cry, don’t get her wrong, but it isn’t where she wants to live out her life. One set of grandparents were farmers, and they left her their house and most of their land. She loves that house, and it becomes a sort of haven for Dante–a place where he can leave his shit at the door, so to speak.
24. Where do they first have sex? On the couch… watching a movie… after their first kiss… Viv climbs into his lap and the rest, as they say, is history.
25. Why do they fight? Usually because Dante feels like Viv is putting herself in harm’s way, taking on more than she can handle, and just… doing too much overall. Viv can sometimes feel like Dante doesn’t trust her abilities–not that he babies her, per se, but that he doesn’t think she can take care of herself. Also, if Dante acts like a major fool–to the extent it actually causes a legit problem for the business. Viv does not play games with that shit.
26. Why do they need to have a serious chat? Dante acting like a minor fool, usually. Viv will get on his ass for being lackadaisical and flippant about business stuff, because he needs to do work and use his brain for once and generally be a functional adult. But it’s mostly about day-to-day stuff, minor things.
27. Why do their friends get annoyed with them? Dante making innuendos at Viv. Viv being snarky with Dante. The two of them tag-teaming whoever runs their mouth at them. Sometimes them not taking their disagreements somewhere else.
28. Why do they get jealous? Dante gets jealous because of Viv’s friendships (and, more broadly, her life) outside of Devil May Cry, as well as her past relationships with other people–she’s still in contact and friends with three of her long-term former partners. Viv can get a little jealous because Dante is a legit snack, and she knows there are more than a few people out there who wouldn’t hesitate to hop on it.
29. Why do they fall a little bit more in love? Dante falls in love whenever Viv smiles, when she’s happy, when she laughs so hard her eyes scrunch up, so he does everything he can to make her happy and laughing and smiling. Viv falls a little bit more in love when Dante shows the kind, sensitive, secretly-sweet, actually-smart man that’s buried underneath all the outlandish coping mechanisms, and that makes her smile–Dante opens up more, Viv smiles when he does… It’s a beautiful feedback loop.
30. Why does it work (or not work) between them? They genuinely love each other and want the best for each other, and they’re willing to do what it takes to keep their relationship working, because they want to be together. They’re willing to learn, they’re willing to change, they’re willing to adapt. They’re gonna stick together. They’re in love.

❤: A friendly ear whenever you need it. Hugs that last through morning when your nightmares won't go away. "You'll always be a treasure to me." Traveling by boat or train whenever we are able. "Of course you do not own too many books! Let's purchase a dozen more!" The simplest plans for the day are often the best: a walk through the park with Kibou, takeaway from a favorite restaurant, and a predictable romantic comedy. Some days are sunny, others are stormy, but we will weather them together.
How Would Your Muse Please Mine?

They said it was a fool’s errand. They said it couldn’t be done. Yet here we are: faced with the impossible, turned possible, turned truth. Nagito is, for once in his life, completely and utterly speechless. He doesn’t even try to muster so much as a haha, that’s really sweet, but I don’t deserve this kind of treatment. He is truly stunned. Which is actually pretty lucky, because if he could speak, he’d probably propose right about now.

Thoughts : Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar (2021)
Tumblr media
Here I am, just trying to do my due diligence in terms of covering the 2021 releases, and the inevitable occurred... I remember the promotional campaign for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, and while being a fan of both Kristen Wiig and absurdist comedies, I did not feel the magnetic attraction to this film that one would have assumed would be present.  As people’s year end lists started to roll out, I begin to notice that more than a few outlets had this listed as one of the better films of the year, so I put aside my doubts and assumptions and figured I’d give it a view... and, after all that... I’m still not sure what to think...
youtube
Let’s get the obvious out of the way first : this film is not only overly silly, but it is built upon a Jenga-like stack of the most random character elements that force the viewer to do possibly more suspension of disbelief than a comedy of this level requires.  Granted, I know we’re not dealing with Citizen Kane here, and with this being a property connected to the Saturday Night Live and Adam McKay camps, to take it seriously would be a fool’s errand, but there are easily two different absurdist comedies of drastically varying levels attempting to operate simultaneously for Barb and Star.  At the heart of things is a touching film about two friends (the titular Barb and Star) who are extremely codependent to one another, but in the process of them trying to collectively step outside of their shared comfort zone, the two find their own sense of personal liberation via individual discovery-laden journeys.  With this premise being the heart, that would make the soul of the film a wholly ridiculous espionage romp, complete with two supervillains, a feet on the ground lackey who doubles as a romantic interest, and a potential threat that could wipe a city off the map, which in this case is presented as deadly biologically-altered mosquitos.
All that being said, as disjointed and bonkers as this film is, there are definitely aspects that work at times.  Like some sort of non-existent SNL skit given license to expand on a simple premise (think It’s Pat, The Ladies Man, Coneheads, the Wayne’s World films or even MacGruber), the character work of Kristen Wiig (Star) and Annie Mumolo (Barb) becomes the foundation for a twisting and turning narrative full of possibilities and low on limits, and thankfully, the pair are able to take their grating Midwestern accents and mine them for all of the gold available.  Populating the world full of varying degrees of idiots is also a positive, as the intersectionality of communication that occurs between the different parties creates enough kinetic comedy to keep viewers on the hook.  While the comedy starts off innocent enough, by the second act we see some bold jabs at edgy humor, up to and including the extremely frank sexual talk throughout the film, the hidden curse words cobbled together by clever cutting, and quite frankly, the deep embracing of blue humor that comes on like a tidal wave as the film progresses.  In terms of technical merits, you can definitely see that there was money put behind this film, and while there are moments of high production value on all levels, the spirit of kitsch is embraced at any and all points possible.
Kristen Wiig gets her Tilda Swinton on, which is definitely one of the gold stars of the film (no pun intended)... as Star, Wiig falls right into the harmonic rhythm with Annie Mumolo that emulates a legion of classic comedy duos, while her performance as Sharon Fisherman is unique enough that even I didn’t recognize her for a large portion of the film due to the heavy makeup applied.  Annie Mumolo is not an actress I am very familiar with, so at the risk of disrespecting her accolades, she definitely holds her own in her shared moments with Wiig, and when alone, she manages to shine in her comedic time and infectious excitement.  Jamie Dornan provides a touch of Adam Scott energy in shades, but mostly commits himself to a hilariously pathetic and comedically rich devotion to Wiig’s Sharon Fisherman character, mining it for all that it is worth during that particular aspect’s arc.  Reyn Doi embraces being the cherry on top of the absurdist sundae, giving off a Nevel Papperman level child evil genius performance while still managing to exude levels of innocence that only a child can, particularly within the character’s physicality.  Damon Wayans Jr. makes the most of his moments, playing in and around the jokes with great zeal, but in all honesty, his character comes off as a bit of a satellite, or as the one ingredient too much in an already busy recipe.  Other standout supporting appearances include Kwame Patterson, Wendi McClendon-Covey, Vanessa Bayer, the always understated but hilarious Phyllis Smith, musical-comedy genius Richard Cheese, a super random Andy Garcia moment, a Reba McEntire cameo and a killer vocal performance from Josh Robert Thompson.
Barb and Star probably isn’t going to win any awards this year, and to be completely honest, I am surprised that it’s popping up on Best of the Year lists.  It’s not that it’s a bad movie... believe me, I’ve seen worse... but it’s also not the kind of movie that going to light a spark of interest in the general movie-going public.  As a Kristen Wiig devotee (in the best possible understanding of the definition), it took me a few separated sittings to finish this film, but when it was all said and done, I did find moments of enjoyment throughout.  Perhaps this will be another Anchorman or American Psycho situation, where my immediate reaction may differ from possible future embracing and enjoyment of the film.  If you’re looking for something completely silly to distract you from rough an hour and half of your day, then give it a watch for sure.  If you take your movie watching seriously or only have time for Kino cinema, I’d skip this one.

Top 75: Transistor
Making an ordered list of any media is pointless and masturbatory. I’ve done this a few times over the years. I enjoy writing about things I love, and I like having a structured activity like this that can be drawn out over several months. It gives me a reason to write, which i desperately need.
This list is entirely subjective and, as much as I’d like to, I can’t give a detailed methodology for this because it’s mostly a gut thing at this point. Games are so different from one another, and trying to sort out my feelings now vs then about a game I loved 30 years ago makes this all a fool’s errand.
Is Super Dodgeball better than Hellblade?* Fuckin’ who knows?
Fittingly, no game is more precariously positioned on this list than Transistor.
Tumblr media
Transistor is like a romantic comedy where the persons involved often don’t get along, then everything comes together in a dramatic climax at end of the film. Some people will tear up and leave satisfied. Some will think “That’s fine and all, but these people still don’t really seem to be great for each other?”. Some people will do both. That’s me. Transistor is The Notebook, and I’m filled with warm tinglies at the thought of it while still having doubts about the overall package. Suck it, Ryan Gosling.
Transistor, like all SuperGiant Games games, is a work of art. A real feast for the eyes and ears. The moment to moment gameplay, specifically the combat, leaves something to be desired. It’s the Ryan Gosling and the blonde from Mean Girls part of Transistor. The art, music, and voice acting are the James Garner and Joan Allen parts. The end of the movie is like the end of the game.
I wish I liked The Notebook so this all held up better, but here we are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, Transistor has SuperGiant’s usual best-in-the-business production. Darren Korb, Ashley Barrett, Logan Cunningham, and the rest of the team do their best to draw me into the world and make forget that I’m playing a video game.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on why the game’s combat left me wanting. On paper, a highly customizable blend of turn-based and real time action is a slam dunk. In practice, I thought the pace of combat was too messy, it didn’t have the satisfying flow of an action RPG or the meticulous precision of turn-based.
That ending though. I remember saying “What the FUCK?!? WHY???” out loud. I stared slack-jawed at the screen as the credits rolled and the music played. And I cried when the credits reached their conclusion. I’ve watched the ending a few times since then and teared up each time. That’s my lasting memory of this game, and that outweighs whatever mixed feelings I may have about the moment to moment gameplay. It’s a capital-M Moment that I will carry with me much like special moments from books and movies throughout my life.

All the cutscenes for Transistor. Spoilers, obviously.
*I’ll let you be the judge. But the answer’s “yes.”

Monthly Manga Review Index: March 2017
This month, I’m launching a new feature: the Monthly Manga Review Index. My motivation is simple. When I started writing ten years ago, link-bloggers such as Brigid Alverson, Tom Spurgeon, and Dirk Deppey played a big role in helping me find a readership. In the spirit of paying it forward, therefore, I’d like to shine a light on the good work that my fellow manga critics are doing at personal blogs, big corporate websites, newspapers, and everything in between.
Since it would be a fool’s errand to aim for comprehensive coverage, my goal is to compile a list of thoughtful essays that focus on new releases, classic titles, and buzzworthy series. I’ve divided the list into four broad categories: From the Top (reviews of new and new-ish print series), Digital Debuts (new digital-only titles), Ongoing Series, and From the Vault (a catch-all term for complete series or OOP titles). I’ve deliberately avoided labels such as “seinen” and “shojo,” as those descriptors are less useful for indicating whether a title is of interest to American readers. Additionally, I’ve chosen a review of the month to draw special attention to outstanding manga criticism.
Have a suggestion for improving the organization of this list? Want to recommend a great writer whose work should be featured here? Leave a comment below!
REVIEW OF THE MONTH: THE GIRL FROM THE OTHER SIDE
Anime UK News may not be on your radar, but this website has more to offer than just a lively set of forums; it’s also a great destination for manga reviews. This month, Sarah, the site’s editor, posted an achingly good essay about The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún. I finished her review with an acute sense of envy — I wish I’d written that! — as well as a deep appreciation for her description of Nagabe’s elegant, distinctive artwork. Go, read!
