Really out of nowhere but I rewatched some of fma03 eps and im gonna rant
I'm just so done with smiling politely saying that fma03 and fmab are both great sorry i cant anymore. Just no
So if you in love with fmab im warning you it probably won't be a good read for you, so feel free to ignore this, block me or idk read this and give it a thought
0. I really dont understand the glorification of manga over anime adaptations. Like people who are making the adaptation are not artists and creators themselves? What makes mangaka better than others and absolutely indisputable, seriously?
1. 'Oh no long introduction and fillers' that actually allowed for Hughes' character development before his death. Seriously if i mention his death among my homies I'll get lots of faces clearly going through some ptsd level flashbacks, it was that impactful. I still need to take a breather when im rewatching before diving into that ep.
Tumblr media
2. Nina. Yet again got more time to grow on us and thus aquired higher trauma inducing levels.
Tumblr media
3. Ishval massacre and aftermath are WAY MORE VISIBLE in fma03. First of all Ishvalans are depicted as human beings, and not some background, and we get lots more on their sufferings, raids on camps, racism towards them, etc etc etc
Tumblr media
4. Scar. Oh boi how do i even go about this. So without raging much about that beefy obviously wrong dude who got 'sense' bitten into him and started working with the oppressing gov in fmab, we have a wronged and tormented survivor of a genocide, who was justified in his vengeance and rage, was depicted as an attractive person of color despite his antagonistic role and was seriously almost cheered on in his actions by the narrartive. His interactions with his people and his moral dilemmas made his character possibly the deepest and most thought out one in the series.
Tumblr media
5. The Rockbell doctors being killed by their own government. That's a waaaaay more interesting and damning detail on our government affiliated protagonists than just dumping their murder on a delirious patient.
Tumblr media
6. Homunculi had their own will and desires and a way more developed story arc that had a huge impact on protagonists' morals. Being created by the humans who were desperate to bring back their loved ones and both parties are getting tormented by it?? Characters strongly driven by their own goals and staggered by their relations to their creators vs some indifferent goons in fmab. Just compare Sloths and their impact on the stories and protags.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Final conflict being a fight with god and his intricate plans in fmab, versus final battle vs a selfish pretty much usual person who had thrown everyone under the bus in pursuit of immortality. Adds so much more desperation flavor. Suddenly your hero journey doesn't end in epic battle for the sake of the mankind, as you would like it to be. It's just to oppose one awful person with too much power and zero care about anyone else. That's raw and that's way more plausible and relatable in our mundane lives.
Tumblr media
8. Overall darker tone and themes of the fma03.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. MUSIC. I dont remember a single track from fmab, but i went really out of my way in my teenage years to find internet access and pirate fma soundtrack and cry listening to it
Tumblr media
10. ART. Sorry but don't tell me fmabs flat colors are anything to 03's soft tones and lighting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah sorry, but I'll take the dark and gritty tragedy over just another shounen with doubtful messages each and every time

I think... animes where I dont have ships... are just the overall better written animes...
Like ok, if I start with one of my earliest animes, Death Note. Yeah, Light/L has an appeal. I get it. But the story of the show is so damn good... that I really don't give a hardcore damn about the pairings. Light/L stands out bc the show WANTS you to think about them together (not as a pairing, but as two sides of a coin, etc etc)
Durarara, same. Shizuo/Izaya would be the Light/L of Durarara. But this anime is less so about the story what story and more so about the characters and their journeys. The appeal of Shizuo/Izaya is that its fun. They're both doing their own thing but then cross paths and when they do its like FIREWORKS, and the show knows it. It wants you to feel that way when they bump into each other.
FMAB (I mean c'mon, my pairing of choice was two characters that exchanged a sentence in the second last ep), that show is insanely well written. I couldn't think of ships the whole time.
I could say the same for Attack on Titan. Like I said throughout watching it, that I shipped Levi/Hange from day 1, and not hardcore. But I wasnt hoping and praying for them to be onscreen together, or to have pairing-esque moments. I was enjoying the show for what it was and if they HAPPENED to be onscreen together I was like :))) also I just kinda shipped everyone with Levi bc in my head Levi in relationship scenarios with all these different personalities was hilarious but then he had to go and be a dad to everyone so I then kept him exclusively for his wife Hange
Then take some underrated shows like 91 Days, ACCA, Baccano, Saiki, Ushio, etc. They're just so well written that pairings are so back of your mind, even if you have one or POSSIBLY two.
For me then, if I take HxH... its a weird one cause there's not exactly a lot to choose from pairing wise. But regardless. I went a good portion of the show not caring about any ship. Didn't want to. The writing was just so good. But then Meruem/Komugi entered and didn't become "my ship for that show", but one of my top 5 fave pairings of all time, the pairings I actually legitimately care a lot about. So HxH hit a little different with that one pair.
But its just something I've noticed about myself. If the pairing isn't a ride or die I'm obsessed with it pairing, its usually from a show that's so well written, I probably just have a pairing from it for the fun of it. EXCEPT HxH. The one exception.
Whereas you can take shows like YGO and Inuyasha, and the writing isn't jawdopping, and I have a good few pairs from each, and those pairings are prob my fave parts of those shows, that's just basically how I know I know which shows I consider better written than others, by my pairing quantity lmao Doesn't mean I dont love those shows tho, they're just not exceptional writing
Then you have shows that, if I didn't have pairings to get me through the experience, I'd probably still be watching them to this day, like an episode a year or something Zexal

If its your first time watching fma, i would personaly recommend watching fma03, then fmab, and then read the manga.
But i rewatch fma once in a while, and when i do, i watch it like this: ep. 1-10 of fma03, then continue with 5 to the end with fmab.

rewatch fmab ep 1
im rewatching since i read the manga
idk why im watching it again tbh
im a rewatcher what can i say
omg didnt even realize that the fuhrer was the one giving orders
i do not remember thr first ep going like tthid
damn the op spoils a lot
but u dont actually realise its spoilers
i totally thought that the fight between al envy glutonny on the bridge was gonna be s thing
i totally forgot that their voices sound like that
what are they doing in the capital anyways
in the manga i think they had rose first before going to the capital
they introduce a lot of important character early even tho they wont matter until later
ed hair down>>>
damn this ice alchemist is dumb as f
im also surprised that all the important characters in the early parts of the story are still vital until the end
which sounds like it should be a basic trait but a lot of stories abandon like half the cast halfway through
i totally forgot that the ice guy knew
quite a few know abt this grand plan
if the ice guy were smarter he couldve sped up the plot
he just has a pretty dumb plan
the music real good rn
ice guy too rash but he got the idea
ooh the black and white with red
what is this guys plan anyways
i shouldve known from the start that bradley was sus
i mean who stares menacingly
i totally missed the father clip
woah ice guy was supposed to be a pillar
these bitches are flexible changing plans like that
i dont think i saw this preview
e 2
i totally didnt expect their dad to still be alive
how long were they living alone
years???
where are social services
i just love the tiny hands when they do alchemy
what they already teased eastern alchemy
damn winry hard as f
asking a soldier whether or not theyve killed someone
cant believe they also teased sensei also did the taboo
ed has some balls
bradley probably knows right
that ed did the taboo
have they already thought they could be sacrifices
ep 3
pretty solid magic structure
the titles go hard as f
city of heresy
thats a slay
rlly asking a normal person to kill someone lmao
even the chimera has signs of transmutation
love the consistency
i also like that u have to may physical contact in order to transmute something
even with the stone
he made a fancy door lmao while escaping
cant believe its been a decade and nothing has come close this show
the 7 were def the best red herring
i totally thought that bradley was the big bad
did not expect the conflict to be deep
thought it would just be abt getting to the stone quicker
ep 4
cant believe scar was introduced pretty late
this manga is so well thought out
like every dot connects so well
cant believe they teased yoki as well
wtf was i not paying attention
sewing life alchemist??
thats too on the nose
bradley knew what was up
he was so sus already
like the hidden eyes
shady glasses
cant u just be a regular alchemist
like im pretty sure he can make a living being a normal alchemist
like cant he be a teacher
up to this point i thought the show was gonna be like a monster of thr week type of show
he fr looks scary
scar looked cool then
the lightning??
amazing
that episode went by so fast
ep 5
rain of sorrows???
amaxing
cant believe lior is real
totally thought lust was the boss of the operation
if villain why hot
hmmm so i think ever since ed took the alchemist exam he was already in line for the sacrifice
kinda funny that scar never got a name
scars the only one who got ed as the fullmetal alchemist right
thats literally a kid scar
he was a baby when the war started
riza ure so cool
armstrong the worst person to fight this guy
since hes the strongest when makes contact but thats also scars gig
woah resembool and ishval are pretty close

Zeketra first kiss please. You’re great! 💋
Thanks! You are cool too xoxo
Don’t Kiss Me Goodbye
Zeketra. Soldier!Zeke AU.
3401 words.
Buy me a ko-fi!
She had written him letters – too many letters – and had never gotten a reply. Perhaps she should feel embarrassed about sending letters to someone who’s clearly not interested in keeping in touch, but he was the one who said he would write her back. Why would he make her a promise he had no intention of keeping? In all the years she’s known him, Zeke had never lied to her like this and Petra doesn’t know why he would start now.
She thinks that maybe life in the Military Police is keeping him busy, but that’s too ridiculous to her. The Military Police were never busy. Everyone knew that much, and it would only take a few minutes to scribble down a short response even if he were bombarded with military duties. She doesn’t need anything detailed. Even a hasty “I received your letters” would do, but she only received nothing in reply. Maybe she should have taken this as a sign that he wanted to cut ties off with her entirely. After all, he had chosen the Military Police while she had joined the Scouting Legion. There isn’t any reason for them to keep in contact anymore, she knows, but if he didn’t want anything to do with her, she’d rather he just tell her himself.
Even though that’s what she thinks, she begins to regret hunting him down when she finally ends up in front of the door to his room. It took a lot of asking around and it was even more difficult when she realized that she didn’t have any friends that had joined the Military Police aside from Zeke; most of her comrades had either joined the Scouting Legion with her or ended up in the Garrison. It also didn’t help that Zeke was still as reclusive as ever and seemed to have even fewer friends in the Military Police than when he was in the Training Corps. She finally scrounged up enough information about where he usually spent his days – in his room doing who knows what much like in his trainee days – and mustered up enough courage to make it to the living quarters of the Military Police division Zeke was in.
She could turn back, she thinks, but she’s already made it this far. To turn back now would be a waste of time after all the work she spent just trying to find him. If she ran away, she’d probably work up the nerve to see him again.
Petra takes a deep breath and raises a hand to knock on the door, but someone else opens the door first. She finds herself blinking at a guy who looks nothing like Zeke at all, and she thinks for one horrific second that she’s knocked on the wrong door. She could just die right there, and she thinks she really will when the guy starts leaning against the door frame with a lopsided smile he probably thinks is charming.
“Well, hello there,” the boy says in a low voice. He tilts his head and looks her up and down. It must be that he likes what he sees because his grin grows even wider and when he speaks with her again, he leans in toward her so that their faces are unnecessarily close together. “My memory is a bit hazy, but we’ve seen each other before, haven’t we? What’s your name again?”
Petra suddenly remembers that she has a voice and she backs away from him, shaking her head furiously. “I’m looking for Zeke,” she manages to stammer. Even if this isn’t his room, it’s possible that he’s somewhere else along this hall or at least in the same building, she thinks.
The boy in front of her frowns, straightening up and scratching his messy brown locks. At first, Petra fears it’s because he hasn’t heard of Zeke at all, but the boy squints his eyes at her and asks, “You’re not Petra, are you?” When she nods, he rolls his eyes and turns his head back to say, “Zeke, that letter girl of yours is here.”
“Zeke’s in there?” Petra says, her heart fluttering at the thought of seeing him after so long. She tries to crane her neck to see past the boy, but he stands in her way and cocks his head at her.
“Eh, you don’t want to be hanging out with him,” the boy replies. He gives her that crooked grin once more. “Say, why don’t the two of us get to know each other instead? I promise I’m a lot more interesting than that boring guy. He just spends all day in that room by himself staring into space. Kind of creepy.”
“I just have to talk to him,” Petra says, frowning when she sees that the boy has no intention of letting her get past him. She even gets on her tiptoes trying to see past him, but the boy always gets in her way.
“Hey, come on,” the guy says, reaching out to touch her arm. He lowers his voice to say, “I can show you a good time, you know.”
She can hear her face flush as she realizes what he’s implying and opens her mouth to retort, but Zeke finally appears.
“Didn’t you say you had an important date to get to?” Zeke asks his roommate. His sudden appearance startles the other boy, who stumbles away from the doorway and nearly knocks into Petra in his surprise. Zeke reaches out to hold Petra’s elbow so that she doesn’t fall, and he glares at the boy. To Petra, he asks, “Are you alright?”
“Yes,” she replies. She feels hopeful now that he’s come to his door. If he had really wanted to avoid her, he wouldn’t have come at all, right? Although she still doesn’t know why he didn’t return her letters, she’s sure he’ll give her an explanation at least.
“Yeah, whatever. Have fun with Zeke, Princess,” the boy mutters before stomping down the hallway to his aforementioned date.
Petra looks up at Zeke, waiting for him to invite her in. Even though it’s nearly noon, he looks as if he’s just gotten out of bed. His hair is disheveled from sleep and he doesn’t even have his glasses on yet. Unlike his roommate who was dressed for the day, Zeke is still in his rumpled pajamas. Although he had always had a habit of sleeping in (which was rarely allowed in the Training Corps), they had never been allowed to sleep in this late.
“You found me,” he says, but he doesn’t invite her in. They stand in the doorway, him inside while she stands outside with his hand still on her elbow. They haven’t seen each other in months, but he doesn’t seem at all glad to see her. His voice is colder than it’s ever been towards her and she’s sure that he’s glaring at her.
“You weren’t replying to my letters, so I decided to find you on my own,” Petra says, voice trembling nervously. It’s only then that she realizes that she should be the one that’s angry at him, not the other way around, so she holds her head high at glares right back at him. Somehow, though, she can’t find it in herself to be mad at him. There must be an explanation for why he’s treating her like this, she thinks.
It must be because he sees she has no intention of leaving or because he feels bad that she’s gone through the trouble of hunting him down, but he allows her into his room, mumbling something about excusing the mess and shutting the door softly behind her after she finally enters.
It’s nothing at all like the boys’ cabin in the Training Corps, but it’s probably because the rules were far stricter than the ones in the Military Police. It’s difficult to tell if the mess belongs to Zeke or his roommates, but Petra suspects that it belongs to the both of them. There are clothes strewn all over the floor and books of all sorts (most likely Zeke’s, Petra thinks) stacked in different places around the room because the bookshelf was already filled up. There are even books on the chair at the only desk in the room, making the beds the only place to sit, but Zeke is already occupying his own bed and Petra doesn’t feel comfortable sitting on his roommate’s bed from the little she knows about him already.
“Hand me my glasses, will you?” Zeke says from his bed. He rubs his face in his hands as if to help him wake up. “They’re on the desk somewhere.”
“Alright,” Petra says, walking over to the desk. She doesn’t spot his glasses at first because there are papers scattered everywhere. She begins to collect the papers and stack them up neatly but realizes that she recognizes them. They’re folded up in a familiar way and she sees that it’s her handwriting on them. She frowns and takes a closer look before realizing that they’re her letters. Not only had he received them, but it looks as though he’s read them over and over again from the worn edges and wrinkles. She could confront him about it now, but it doesn’t seem like the time yet, so she bites her tongue and retrieves the glasses she had found from underneath one of her letters.
“Thank you,” he says after she hands him his glasses. He puts them on and brushes his hair back in his hand, further tousling his already messy hair. When he sees that she’s standing there awkwardly in the middle of his room, he raises his eyebrow. “Are you just going to stand there? You can sit down, you know.” He gestures to the space beside him next to his crumpled sheets.
“Oh, I couldn’t possibly. I was just dropping by,” Petra says, blushing at the thought of sitting on the bed he had just slept in.
“It’s fine. After all, we haven’t seen each other in a while,” he tells her, patting the mattress. “Really, sit down, Petra.”
“If you insist,” she mumbles, making her way over to him and taking her place on his bed. She prays that he doesn’t notice the pink flush of her cheeks and ducks her head down so that her hair can hide her face.
“So how is the Scouting Legion?” he asks her. He keeps his tone so casual as if they’d only seen each other a few days ago instead of a few months. Not only that, but he asks her a question that he knows the answer to. She knows because it’s obvious that he’s read her letters, so why is he asking her such a thing now when he should be the one giving her answers.
“It’s fine,” she finds herself replying, although she doesn’t know why. She feels numb as she repeats the same things she had told him in her letters – training in the Scouting Legion is even more rigorous than in the Trainee Corps, the veterans are scary but kind, and the abandoned castles the Scouting Legion uses as their headquarters are rather eerie to sleep in. She answers him in the hopes that she’ll be able to slip in a few questions of her own – What has he been doing? Did he miss her at all? Why hadn’t he written back even though he had received her letters? – but Zeke always manages to ask her something before she can even begin to think what she should ask first.
“It seems like you have a lot to do in the Scouting Legion,” he says.
“Unlike you,” Petra finds herself saying before she can stop herself. “How is it that I have less time than you and still write you, while you have enough time to sleep until noon and yet not write me at all?”
He blinks at her, and she thinks that she’s never seen him look so cold. “You say you’ve written me, but I didn’t receive anything from you at all. Maybe it got lost in the mail.”
He lies to her so easily that she’s speechless for a second. He must know that he left his letters out in the open, that she had seen them when she had retrieved his glasses, and yet he has the audacity to lie to her like this. She’d be angry if she weren’t so hurt and confused.
“But,” she begins before he interrupts her.
“Petra,” he says with the same indifferent expression. “If you send letters to someone and they don’t reply, if you know they’re lying to you when they say they never got them, if they don’t put any effort into keeping in contact with you, don’t you think it means that they don’t want to see you again?”
She would have rather he slapped her in the face. Had he always been this cruel? Even when he had been distant and aloof, he had never been this cold-hearted. She’s too shocked to say anything to him at first, but she finds herself standing up from his bed and stumbling away from him.
“Well, I thought you would at least have the courage to say that to my face instead of ignoring me for so long,” she says. She means her words to be scathing so that she can hurt him just as much as he’s hurt her, but her voice trembles and she knows that she’s failed horribly when he doesn’t even reach out to pull her back.
“I thought you’d be smart enough to figure it out on your own,” Zeke replies. He doesn’t move from where he sits. “You were always a bright girl.”
She didn’t think she’d cry, but tears begin to sting her eyes no matter how hard she tries to hold them back. She swipes at them hastily with the back of her hand and tells him, “Well, you were the one who said you’d write back. You should have been honest with me from the very beginning if this is what you were going to do all along,” she says bitterly. She no longer tries to hide the quivering of her voice.
It’s even more maddening when he doesn’t reply. He only looks out the window as if there’s something more interesting outside.
“You’ll get what you wanted then. I won’t bother you anymore,” Petra says, raising her voice even though she knows he’s stopped listening to her a long time ago. “I only stopped by because it might be my last chance because we have an expedition tomorrow. I hope you’re happy now.” She heads towards the door, twisting the doorknob and pulling the door open but another hand pushes it shut.
Zeke had come so quickly and quietly that she hadn’t even seen him move from his bed. He looks down, but his eyes don’t meet hers. “I thought they weren’t funding those useless expeditions anymore,” he says quietly. “You never mentioned any of it in your letters.”
She hadn’t because he never replied to them and on the chance that he did read them, she didn’t want him to worry about her. Petra tosses her head, saying, “It’s not like you care.”
“Are you going?” he asks in that same quiet voice. It’s the first time he’s asked her a question today that he wants to know the answer to.
“Of course. I’m part of the Scouting Legion after all,” she says, turning around. She hadn’t noticed how close he was behind her. It’s far closer than they usually stand together, and it makes her a little nervous. She opens her mouth to excuse herself. He had made it clear he didn’t want to see her anymore, so she doesn’t have a reason to stay any longer. She doesn’t get a chance to speak though.
“Don’t go,” he tells her. When she’s trapped by the intense stare of his hazel eyes, she realizes that this is the first time today that he’s really looking at her. He’s wracked with worry, something that surprises her given his previous coldness with her only a minute before. She wonders what it is he’s really lying about and why he’s hiding things from her like this when they had been such good friends in the Training Corps.
“I have to,” she says, confused. She tries to wriggle away from him, but he has her trapped between his arms and he’s so much larger than her that she doesn’t even think about shoving him aside because she knows it would be useless.
His arms envelope her in an embrace that stops her breath altogether. She’s not sure if her head is spinning because he’s never been one for gestures such as these or if it’s because he’s holding her so tightly. It must be the latter because she can hardly feel her limbs and she’s sure her blood has stopped circulating already. She can’t even move to wrap her arms around him because she’s so surprised.
“Zeke?”
His arms slacken around her but only by a little so that he can lean back and look at her face. “Please,” he whispers, and she wonders if she’s ever seen him look so frightened before. There is always the possibility of her dying tomorrow on the expedition, but he looks at her like he knows it’s a certainty and she wonders if that’s the reason why he clings to her so desperately now. Perhaps the reason why he had pushed her away all those times was because he couldn’t stand the thought of never seeing her again, but the realization that this might be their last meeting has made him regret how he’s treated her.
Like the last time they had seen each other when she had come to say goodbye to him, he reaches a hand up to her face, cupping her cheek in his hand and brushing her lips ever so gently with his thumb. He brings his face close to hers before, and she thinks this is the part where he pulls away and tells her goodbye, but he presses his lips hard against hers. It surprises her, but it must be something that she’s always been waiting for because she kisses him back just as forcefully, allowing him to press her up against the door. His hand moves from her face to the back of her head, threading his fingers through her short, ginger locks. His other hand traces the curves of her body, his arm wrapping her waist to bring her even closer to him. When she opens her mouth to let out a moan, he slips his tongue between her lips and she savors the taste of him; it’s bittersweet and something else. It takes her a second to realize that he tastes of salt.
When he pulls away, he lifts her chin gently. His forehead touches hers and she can see the flecks of gold in his hazel eyes. “Stay here just until tomorrow’s over,” he begs her softly. It’s his voice that shakes now and she sees that he’s crying much more than she had only a few minutes ago. “If you stay here, you’ll be safe.”
“Zeke,” she asks, reaching out a hand to touch his face and her fingers become wet with his tears. “Why are you crying?”
There is something about tomorrow that he’s scared of, something he knows about but won’t tell her, but she thinks that the expedition will be as deadly as all the others. Why does he look at her as if there’s no doubt it’ll be the death of her? She thinks it might be the reason why he never replied to her letters, but she knows she’ll never get an answer out of him.
He doesn’t reply, but now she’s used to his silent responses. He simply lowers himself into her arms and although she nearly collapses against the weight of him, she finds she can hold him up somehow as he weeps, his tears staining her shirt.
She’ll stay with him for now, but she’ll have to leave eventually. She had dedicated her heart already, and it’s too late for him to claim it. She wishes he hadn’t kissed her though. It’ll only make it harder for her to say goodbye.
