Really out of nowhere but I rewatched some of fma03 eps and im gonna rant
I'm just so done with smiling politely saying that fma03 and fmab are both great sorry i cant anymore. Just no
So if you in love with fmab im warning you it probably won't be a good read for you, so feel free to ignore this, block me or idk read this and give it a thought
0. I really dont understand the glorification of manga over anime adaptations. Like people who are making the adaptation are not artists and creators themselves? What makes mangaka better than others and absolutely indisputable, seriously?
1. 'Oh no long introduction and fillers' that actually allowed for Hughes' character development before his death. Seriously if i mention his death among my homies I'll get lots of faces clearly going through some ptsd level flashbacks, it was that impactful. I still need to take a breather when im rewatching before diving into that ep.
2. Nina. Yet again got more time to grow on us and thus aquired higher trauma inducing levels.
3. Ishval massacre and aftermath are WAY MORE VISIBLE in fma03. First of all Ishvalans are depicted as human beings, and not some background, and we get lots more on their sufferings, raids on camps, racism towards them, etc etc etc
4. Scar. Oh boi how do i even go about this. So without raging much about that beefy obviously wrong dude who got 'sense' bitten into him and started working with the oppressing gov in fmab, we have a wronged and tormented survivor of a genocide, who was justified in his vengeance and rage, was depicted as an attractive person of color despite his antagonistic role and was seriously almost cheered on in his actions by the narrartive. His interactions with his people and his moral dilemmas made his character possibly the deepest and most thought out one in the series.
5. The Rockbell doctors being killed by their own government. That's a waaaaay more interesting and damning detail on our government affiliated protagonists than just dumping their murder on a delirious patient.
6. Homunculi had their own will and desires and a way more developed story arc that had a huge impact on protagonists' morals. Being created by the humans who were desperate to bring back their loved ones and both parties are getting tormented by it?? Characters strongly driven by their own goals and staggered by their relations to their creators vs some indifferent goons in fmab. Just compare Sloths and their impact on the stories and protags.
7. Final conflict being a fight with god and his intricate plans in fmab, versus final battle vs a selfish pretty much usual person who had thrown everyone under the bus in pursuit of immortality. Adds so much more desperation flavor. Suddenly your hero journey doesn't end in epic battle for the sake of the mankind, as you would like it to be. It's just to oppose one awful person with too much power and zero care about anyone else. That's raw and that's way more plausible and relatable in our mundane lives.
8. Overall darker tone and themes of the fma03.
9. MUSIC. I dont remember a single track from fmab, but i went really out of my way in my teenage years to find internet access and pirate fma soundtrack and cry listening to it
10. ART. Sorry but don't tell me fmabs flat colors are anything to 03's soft tones and lighting
So yeah sorry, but I'll take the dark and gritty tragedy over just another shounen with doubtful messages each and every time

I'm sorry but I cannot STAND that final photo in brotherhood showing the gang post-series
it does not make any sense to me and feels incredibly out of character, and also their perceived ages in the photo make every event that's happened since ep 64 feel extremely rushed, like the events all happened one after another. especially on the Ed and Winry side of things
(also I have no idea if this photo is a thing brotherhood made up or was in the manga too. I haven't ever finished the manga. also I don't care to get the photo. y'all know the one I'm talking about I hope)

you're telling me that this nomad. this traveler. who was shown leaving on another trip IMMEDIATELY after coming home to see winry with al in the final episode
you're telling me that he came home from his trip to I think it was another country, decided to SETTLE DOWN??? married Winry. and immediately had two kids one after another
you guys may disagree with me but. this doesn't feel like Ed. the Ed I know is a nomad. he wouldn't settle. he has his whole life ahead of him and so many places he hasn't explored and I feel like in his youth he would want to see as many sights and travel as much as possible. and settle when he's older. Winry was even lecturing him at the train station for travelling again because he doesn't take care of his automail. she knows Ed doesn't settle down for anything like self care or maintenance

I don't think him still being so young in that photo with two tiny kids very close in age (idk if they're twins or not) feels very much like Ed to me
also if the photo afterwards of him smiling at a train station is implying that he has kids and still goes on long trips. I'm sorry. I don't see him doing that. that's exactly what he hated Hohenheim for doing and I cannot see him inflicting absent travelling dad on his own kids.

To look at this from Winry's perspective... She's a career girly. I don't think she would want to give up her mechanic work to have kids. And I don't think a mechanic's workshop is a safe place to raise children at all.
And to go back to the travelling Edward point again... There's absolutely no way she'd be ok with him leaving so often while she's at home raising their kids. She wouldn't stand for that all

I just don't think someone who wants to travel and someone who focuses on their work are very compatible with children at all. Especially so young

Your AU has an amazing concept.
The problems with 03 are the studio was in love with Roy and tends to handle him softly but even then it's better than FMAB, which is not saying much lol.
Yes I too want to punt Miles into the sun. His advice to Scar was bizarre no other word for it.
The problem with Noa is she is a real minority so she absolutely deserved better handling. I would suggest skipping FMA COS if you don't want to deal with the mishandling (not racism against) of a Roma character.
The studio had to cut out a lot for the movie in which she appears due to sudden budget cuts. It's garbled and doesnt make sense. You can actually skip that movie. It's not a must see in the fandom.

Duly noted, and I'm not surprised. Mustang seems to be a generally favored character, both by writers and the fandom. I was indifferent to him at first but... recently I've been getting pissed off at him haha.
Miles is... when I first watched BH I liked him just on the basis of him being an Ishvalan, because I was just that starved. I didn't want to acknowledge the fact that what he said was total bullshit, wasn't ready for it because I wanted to like him. So to acknowledge it recently, it feels like a weight off my chest but also I feel my anger thricefold, lol.

not to bring fma into things but we all know the concept of alchemy and equivalent exchange yeah? and how we liken kdj's sacrficing himself over and over again as a bastard form of it like his whole "i will die in exchange so that my companions can live" too but i propose we bring up another fma parallel and understand that fundamnetally there is no value to a human life because you cannot assign a value to it. and honestly, the idea of human life being "worth" something is incredibly antithetical to orv's anti-capitalist message. because who exactly is the one that dictates value?
kdj becomes the enemy of the story and fights together with the outer gods against the system that has labelled them evil for existing, for daring to resist, for having no value in the world's story. but by labelling them as such, they have ironically become something valued by the very same system and truly shows the fragility that notion of "value" holds and how it can always be changed. in the end, kimcom and kdj uses that to overturn the status quo, the narrative of hatred and being unknowable, and become champions of the unspoken. giving a voice to the voiceless, a face to the foreign. he raises up the question and challenges: why should you ever accept this shitty corrupted system's definition of value?
kimcom, kdj and yjh they all protect the nameless ones, the discarded ones that are thrown away and hunted down by the system that views things as discardable simply because of this idea of "value". likewise, kimcom throws the world away for a single man and in the eyes of most, it would not be equivalent but kimcom and we as readers emphatically disagree.
ultimately, how can you ever compare a human life to another? so how can kdj's sacrifice and death ever be justified as an exchange for his companions' lives or the sake of the world. it won't ever. so destroy the notion of value and the idea of equivalent exchange, discard it and embrace that the fact that a human life will always be intrinsically invaluable, a miracle upon miracle upon miracle for simply existing and every wondrous and horrific association of being alive. power is is not what the system dictates it because it will always be us together as humans.

Rewatching FMAB and I can't believe I'm just now realizing that even though Lust is a bombshell, she doesn't represent sexual lust.
She represents bloodlust.
Which makes so much more sense when taken in the context of the overall message of the entire show.
FMAB is literally an anti-war show. It's about showing how much war and senseless violence impact society and the people who commit it.
And Lust continually dives straight into the violence and revels in it. She's attractive which is how war can be presented to people on a surface level, but craving that kind of violence doesn't lead anywhere and it's only skin deep.

You know for a manga that boasts having so many badass female characters i can't help but need to add OCs to Metallic Crimson because all of the female characters fall into the following categories:
A) White Seeming Soldier Lady (Riza Hawkeye, Rebecca Catalina, Maria Ross, Sheska, Olivier Mira Armstrong, Briggs Doctor*) (*military doctor ergo here and not below- plus babe doesn't even have a name)
B) White Seeming Civillian Lady (Winry, Pinako, Sarah Rockbell, Armstrong sisters (3 of them and i can't recall if they ever speak), Mrs Armstrong (we don't have a name for her), Madame Christmas, Trisha Elric*, Gracia Hughes*) (*have these gals done anything except been there for their man or their sons I would hardly count them shonen badass but I am adding them because they are female characters and they play a part)
C) White Seeming Alchemist Lady (Izumi Curtis) (lmao i thought there'd be more but all of the other alchemists in the manga are men)
D) Not Human (Martel, Lust, Nina, Nina's mom)
E) Not Amestrian* (*Ishvalans are Amestrian) (Lan Fan, Mai, The panda (tbh i just now noticed i put the panda here and not in Not Human and it's so much funnier here)
The only ones who don't fall into this category are Shan (the ONLY female speaking ishvalan in the fmab anime - SHE APPEARS SO LITTLE AND IS FORGETTABLE THAT I HAD TO GOOGLE HER) and Paninya (a one-off character)
Oh but limeta! Amestris is supposed to be Europe, that's why they're all white -

For its time, FMAB is an incredibly diverse story with amazing female characters, but i see people still boasting them for modern standards and it's like - but there aren't, there really aren't many badass female characters at all. and if I were to take a step further and remove all of the female characters whose sole motivation is enabling or helping a man succeed then I'd cut those characters up there even further. The only ones who are genuinely badass characters with their own clear cut motivation are Pinako Rockbell (suppose if she were younger, she'd be given a man to hype and do things for but thank god she's an old wise woman archtype and therefore immune to that trope), Sarah Rockbell (selflessly saving lives and being a doctor, though sorry queen you died) and Olivier Mira Armstrong (proactively fucking shit up and with a clear motivation what she wants - but then you can also infer that Mustang is a part of her motivation because she wants to fuck his chances up of being Fuhrer lmao)
Winry in brotherhood is very waifu, very not proactive, very I'll wait for you but she still gets shit done and so she's still badass because we all know that strength is differently expressed with different characters so she's still on this list, but compared to her 03 version she's very stay at home, very support role, very all i do i do for ed and al.
Riza Hawkeye... i love her. she's my favourite character. but remove roy from her motivation and what do you get...be honest...
Madame Christmas, for the only times she does appear, she does so because she's gotta help Roy.
Gracia is a housewife :) and we know nothing about her. She is an extension of Maes Hughes. She is there because if she weren't there we wouldn't have Elicia and if we didn't have Elicia we wouldn't have the scenes where Maes boasts and hypes his family up in order to solidify his characterisation as THAT CARING DUDE HOPE NOTHING BAD - OH NO THE WIFE GUY DIED.
Make no mistake! This is not anti fmab. I've written over 300k worth of content for this fandom and I adore every single frame of that show (especially the nina tucker spliced with her dog frame, chefs kiss) But it has forced me to have to create either backstories and motivation for most of these female characters that exist outside of the men in their lives or it has forced me to create OCs that don't fall within those aforementioned categories.
Would it have been so bad, I ask, if we got an Ishvalan character who was not a monk and not in the slums waiting to die? Maybe even a female character? Would it have been so bad that we got more speaking roles for women outside of the military who aren't alchemists? Would it have been bad if we got a female character who was a State Alchemist?
Most likely yes, because Arakawa had a clear view of what she needed in order to tell her story from start to finish, but I'm not confined to such limitations and I'll make Ishvalan characters who are proactive. I'll gladly add more characterisation to our prexisting anime babes because I love that I can. I am a worldbuilder first and foremost and I love making a world that's LIVED in and having such a sanitized character list from up there is really making me not feel like it's LIVED in.
Anyway calling fmab a show filled to the brim with badass female characters is ??? an outdated take.

But why would I NOT take the chance to share more OTPs that I love, especially if I can dip into some of my favorite non canon ships too and now ive got some new ones and from other media as well. 🤣 the limitations of only 10 though is always hard. Here are another 10 of my current favorite ships I obsess over. I won't include any from the post above though even though I'm still in love with ALL of them too. Victuuri (Yuri On Ice, Anime)
I watched this anime and fell in love with it and their chaotic but adorable and sweet relationship SO HARD. And the relationship is right there in canon which is SO NICE to see in anime where it's just another small portion of their lives. The way they are both obsessed with each other too 😍

Edwin and Royai (FMAB, Anime)
Both canon. Royai is canon, argue with the wall! Lol I guess Royai is like half canon, but whatever. Explicit confirmation is not needed to know those 2 are married. Ed and Winry are the peak childhood friends to lovers arc in the most adorable. Plus she is a badass mechanic. HIS badass mechanic. The way their love grew organically is adorable and so sweet. They take such good care of each other. And Royai are the epitome of a married couple. They also are both so equally badass and have such infinite and complete trust in each other?? It's AMAZING. The way they literally trust each other with their lives and their mental well being. The way Roy literally trusts her to be his eyes when needed also? He literally calls her his queen. I love them so much

Clexa (The 100, TV Show)
CANON yet they did us dirty with the bury your gays trope. But like the "I'm only soft for you" bullshit they had going on. UGH I ate it up so hard. Lol they are both such extreme badasses, morally Grey anti heroes. OF COURSE THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS INTENSELY PERFECT TOO! I love the bellarke ship with the best of them too, but out of all Clarke's relationships, the best and my favorite will always be with Lexa. She loved her SO MUCH and the way Lexa always protected her 😭

Not canon, I know, but I'm obsessed with the ship anyway because it SHOULDVE BEEN CANON. I could write whole essays over how painfully gay and queer coded these 2 are. Canonically soulmates and everything. Lol their characters and their relationship was the most flushed out in the show and therefore, them being shipped together just makes sense. Especially with how homoromantic and angsty half the shit they did was.

Not canon, but the author said it would've been in a different timeline and that even in the current on, Adolin and Shallan (the Canon couple) probably would've been willing to go for it. Lol you can't convince me otherwise thay they aren't both lowkey in love with Kaladin. They invite him to be their bodygaurd on all their dates for a reason! 😂
HuaLian (TGCF, Donghua)
I've read these books for the first time recently and now these 2 live rent free. Like honestly, the OBSESSION with each other. The adorableness. The respectfulness of boundaries. The ICONIC one liners dropped. The do anything cross any line be wherever you need devotion. The way one of them is the sweetest human alive and the other embodies the "I hate everyone but you" trope. Lol the awkwardness of the positions they find themselves in. The jealousy of each other that they make up themselves. Lol the slow burn is painful!! It's been literally 800 years just tell each other you love each other and get married!!!!

So many ATLA ships lol but I love a good Zukka, Sukka, Zutara, Kataang, Korrasami, Rangshi, Suzukki as my ot3 love too lol (TV Show)
There is a good mix of canon and non canon ships here lol what can I say, I'm easy to please! But I will say that it speaks to my Sapphic soul in the best way that the wlw ships are CANON! Thank you ATLA universe for that blessing. And they are canon in the most amazing of ways. Korrasami will always be my favorite. The bi icons those girls are and they way they are EVERYTHING and are so freaking sweet and cute and BADASS.

Loves of my life, this relationship is grumpy x sunshine trope personified. They are so sweet, so cute, so perfect for each other it hurts. I clearly have a dynamic I love here. Lol because they are also both insanely badass. Plus the ghost king who controls death and his medic doctor boyfriend? Yes please. Literally made for each other and the way they help each other heal and be happy 🥺

The Iron Triangle, aka Yizhi, Shimin, and Zetian (Iron Widow, Book)
Love triangles done correctly and ended perfectly, aka bisexually. Lol to quote the author, "Iron Widow is just 400 pages of Zetian and Shimin suffering nonstop while Yizhi has the most bisexual time of his life." Lmfao. They are the morally Grey anti heros and lowkey villains in love badass scifi/fantasy cast of characters who ALL fall in love with each other and are only stronger for it. And it's a true triangle, where all 3 are in love and feel more complete for it. There is no choosing.

Darrow & Virigina, and Sevro & Victra (Red Rising, Book)
Unhinged characters falling in love. What could be better. They both match energies so well, bring out the best in each other and fight so hard for each other or sometimes fight each other too. These books are so good, but so brutal. Lol the relationships follow suit. But I freaking LOVE them. I cried so much reading it all and yet I'm obsessed and have been since I first read them. It'll probably never stop.

Okay! To start off, this is just observation and something I personally picked up while watching FMAB for the first time. I’m not usually super analytical or stuff, but the themes and symbolism pouring out of this show are really, truly something. This was a thing that I noticed as a person of faith and i thought it’d be cool to type it out.
Without further ado, remember that scene in FMAB (ep 41, i think) where Edward and Kimblee are fighting in the mine shaft tunnels and Ed “incapacitates” Kimblee before Kimblee reveals his philospher’s stone and pretty much wipes the floor with Ed and buries his henchmen and ultimately Ed ends up like this:
Kimblee said before he did all this, but it was something along the lines of “you should’ve killed me. Look at where your mercy’s gotten you?”
And then the next time we see Ed, he’s impaled through the side, bleeding extensively.
And, I know, there’s a lot of interpretation of FMAB as anti-religious and there’s definitely some things to indicate that, but my brain just went ding! and despite being the least analytical person out there, dots were connected(insert meme here)
I doubt it was intentional, but the first thing that ran through my head was that the cost of mercy was blood.
The second was that Ed was pierced through his side.
I’m not trying to say that Ed is a Christ figure. But the theme is there. That in order to show Kimblee mercy, in order to keep from killing him, Edward’s blood was spilled.
Anyway, it was something that I found particularly compelling and whether or not it was an intentional thing doesn’t especially matter to me.
