it’s a long walk back. this is the thing ling keeps thinking to himself. even though sometimes they’ve taken a camel here or there, or hopped in a wagon, it is a long walk back. it feels even longer than he remembers it being. and mostly, he thinks, it feels long because it’s quiet.
normally, when they travel, it is his responsibility to keep up an endless stream of chatter, to get interrupted by fu when he’s said something foolish, to share a look with lan fan, to do everything in his power to make them both laugh. but he’s finding his voice stuck in a way he maybe never has before.
they won. and it still feels like they lost.
