The far right aren’t the only ones showing up armed. Across the country, marginalized individuals are forming groups like the John Brown Gun Club and Socialist Rifle Association that claim to be devoted to the idea of community defense. Their rationale is informed by the massacres at Colorado’s Club Q and Florida’s Pulse nightclub, and tempered by a long cultural distrust of the police, who they say have repeatedly failed to protect them from — and in some cases even perpetuated — right-wing hate.
Many sources interviewed for this story — particularly those who conceal their identities at protests — asked to use pseudonyms, in fear of being targeted or doxxed by the far right. Others were happy to share their names, judging that their public presence — or concealed-carry permits — shield them from harm. All of them, however, agree on one thing: The other side has guns and is willing to use them. The only answer is to be prepared to shoot back.
[...]
“My community, the South Asian community, has been dealing with this shit for 30 years,” Azad says. “Every year, some dude throws a Molotov into a temple, or spray-paints swastikas on our houses.”
Gato chimes in. “I don’t want to own guns and do this,” he says. “But I also don’t want someone coming after my wife because she’s a person of color.”
But in Texas, Azad and Gato say, guns are a necessity — the right wing has them, the law allows them, and being armed is the only way to stay safe.
“This is the Wild fuckin’ West, man,” Azad says. “We kinda do what we gotta do.”

!!!please read if you live in florida!!!
aaaaannnd im boutta be out of a job soon.
"welcome to florida where woke goes to die"
MORE LIKE WHERE INTELLIGENCE GOES TO FUCKING DIE.
if you didn't know. Ron DeSantis that idiot. just signed into law that any dumbass with a gun can carry a concealed loaded gun WITHOUT A PERMIT. WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OR ANY OTHER SHIT LIKE THAT.
So let me tell you something that i know as someone who works (i will be quitting as soon as possible) at a gun range/store.
To carry a concealed carry license you had to prove to an instructer that you undersand the laws regarding concealed carry and that you understand how to safely and correctly handle a firearm. despite floridas very flimsy gun laws this at least ensured that people knew what they were doing.
that will be gone July 1st
He did this, just the other day. No media channels covered it, he didn't announce it. that low-life piece of shit did this behind closed doors because he knows how dangerous this is and he's claiming its for "our protection"
ive see the kind of idiots that can get guns. I've seen them up close and personal. Ive stood in front of them as they pulled a loaded gun from their bag. ive seen them try t get into the concealed carry class without ever having touched a gun before. ive seen them try to buy one without knowing how to handle it safely. ive seen the kind of idiots that can own and buy a gun for a mere 300 bucks. sometimes lower if there's a sale.
"but backround checks-" dont do shit. like i said...ive seen the kind of idiots that can own firearms and thats not even counting how many dangerous people are going to be allowed to carry guns into public spaces without any license because its legal now.
I dont know what the best thing is to do, but please be aware of this. Im begging you no matter where you are please reblog this because Ron desantis is trying to hide this from as many people as possible.
Please reblog this to share this information to as many people as possible and to stay safe everyone!
Ron dedumbass wants us not to know, he wants to keep us oblivious so theres no uproar. spread this news!

The murder of three Black people in a racist killing in Jacksonville, Florida, has devastated the community and stoked renewed outrage over the state’s increasingly loose gun regulations.
The white gunman who perpetrated the Jacksonville shooting appears to have legally acquired the weapons used in the attack, a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style rifle emblazoned with swastikas. The US attorney general, Merrick Garland, announced on Sunday that the justice department would investigate the attack as “a hate crime and an act of racially motivated violent extremism”.
The Saturday shooting came four months after Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican and now a presidential candidate, signed a law enacting permitless carry in Florida. The law eliminated Florida’s previous requirements mandating that those wishing to carry a concealed gun must complete safety training and undergo a background check.
It remains unclear whether a more thorough background check would have impeded gun purchases for the shooter, who had no criminal arrest history but was once held involuntarily in a mental health facility. As authorities continue to investigate the shooting, gun safety advocates and racial justice leaders have called for a re-examination of Florida’s firearm regulations. They fear that more tragedies like that which occurred in Jacksonville will prove inevitable if the state remains awash with guns in the hands of unpermitted owners.
“Gun violence has been a serious problem in Florida, and with the passage of permitless carry earlier this year, it will undoubtedly rise,” said Samantha Barrios, Florida state director for the gun safety group Giffords. “Florida’s weak gun laws have made us home to too many mass shootings. If Governor DeSantis is serious about stopping future tragedies he would support overturning permitless carry and work to strengthen Florida’s gun laws.”
The Jacksonville chapter of the NAACP similarly urged the Florida legislature to reconsider the permitless carry law.
“We are committed to supporting efforts that safeguard our communities from these acts of racial violence,” the chapter said in a statement. “Together, we must work towards a future where hate has no place and where all individuals can live without fear of senseless attacks.”
The shooting has sparked additional criticism of DeSantis and his policies on guns and education, after the governor signed a bill restricting the discussion of race in Florida’s schools. As DeSantis attended a vigil for the three victims of the Jacksonville shooting on Sunday, he was met with loud boos from the crowd. Videos of the event showed one attendee yelling at DeSantis, “Your policies caused this!”
The grief and outrage over the Jacksonville shooting may prompt DeSantis and his Republican allies in the Florida legislature to reconsider the permitless carry law. But there is some warranted skepticism of that possibility, given that DeSantis already signed the bill in April over loud objections from his constituents. One survey conducted earlier this year by the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab showed 77% of Florida voters, including 62% of Republicans, do not support permitless carry.
Despite the many challenges to overturning the law, gun safety activists expressed commitment to ensuring the safety of Florida’s residents and holding DeSantis accountable. As the Jacksonville community grieves, the Democratic congressman Maxwell Frost said he hoped DeSantis would sit down with gun safety advocates to discuss how to prevent the next shooting.
“Activists and organizers have been asking him to travel the state and sit down with people since he’s gotten into office, and he never does it,” Frost told CNN on Sunday. “What I would tell him is, ‘Governor, we need a special session on gun violence. We needed it when you first started, and we need it now more than ever.’”

A bill that would let people carry concealed firearms without a permit and without training passed out of the House on Friday, putting the bill just a step away from the Governor’s desk. The legislation lets people who are otherwise qualified to purchase and carry a firearm avoid the permitting process to conceal carry their weapon.
Rep. Chuck Brannan, R-Macclenny, said the bill was about removing red tape, and that “Florida will not come between you and your freedom to protect yourself anymore.” The legislation passed 76-32.
Despite intense lobbying, the legislation does not open the door to allow people to openly carry their guns in public — a point of anger among pro-gun advocates who say the bill does not go far enough in protecting Second Amendment rights.
Rep. Mike Beltran, R-Riverview, briefly filed an amendment earlier this week that would have allowed for open carrying in certain kinds of holsters. But he withdrew it the next day. On the House floor, he spoke at length about why he believes open carry would be a good move.
Beltran said in a text that the amendment “was and is good policy but unfortunately this is not the right time or the right vehicle.”
“I’d prefer to pass this legislation and lock in what we can, and then see what we can accomplish later,” Beltran wrote.
House Speaker Paul Renner said he supports open carry, but said there’s concern among his caucus and in the Senate about the issue. He said he and Beltran discussed the amendment and identified some problems that would have made things “worse, not better,” which were flagged by the National Rifle Association.
“There are a lot of things I don’t get as Speaker that I want, and I’m very very happy that this bill moves us forward, expands rights in a way that are material and important,” Renner said.
Luis Valdes, Florida director of Gun Owners of America, said in a statement that the permitless carry bill is a step in the right direction, but said it isn’t “constitutional carry” like Gov. Ron DeSantis promised last year.
“Governor DeSantis promised Floridians that we’d get constitutional carry and the Republican supermajority is failing to bring that,” Valdes said.
Members of pro-gun groups speaking out against the bill found themselves strange bedfellows with gun safety advocates, who argued the removal of an additional background check and the training requirement made the public less safe.
An amendment to require training was one of more than a dozen amendments put forward on the permitless carry bill, nearly all of which were sponsored by Democrats, and nearly all of which failed.
Brannan, the sponsor of the bill, said he thought training was important, and pointed to $1.5 million in the bill allotted for it, but said he did not think it was “the nanny government’s job” to mandate it.
Democrats also argued the bill would increase the risk of profiling, and would acutely impact Black communities.
One of the amendments, from Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, would allow people to carry firearms into meetings in the Legislature. Legislative meetings are one place, along with courthouses, polling places, and a handful of other designated areas, where Florida law prohibits people from carrying firearms, concealed or otherwise.
Eskamani said “if the majority party thinks guns make us more safe, we should strike this.” Republicans voted the amendment down.
Another amendment by Eskamani would have created an avenue for people to put themselves on a voluntary do not sell list, which they could remove themselves from later. Eskamani said it was designed to help protect people contemplating suicide.
During the debate, Rep. Michele Rayner-Goolsby, D-St. Petersburg, told legislators that in 2021, she attempted suicide with a gun and later checked herself into a mental health facility.
“At the end of the day I don’t see the harm in this type of amendment if it can save someone’s life like mine,” Rayner-Goolsby said.
The amendment failed.
Alexis Dorman, a 19-year-old volunteer with Students Demand Action, said she expected that the bill would pass because of the Republican supermajority, but said she was surprised by the speed at which it moved. By the first week of Florida’s legislative session, the bill was through all of its committees in the House and Senate.
“The youth in our state today are going to grow up around people who can legally carry a firearm without any proper training, and that’s really scary to think about,” Dorman said.
The permitless carry legislation is also available for a vote on the Senate floor, but hasn’t yet been scheduled.

Yahoo News: Civil rights groups warn tourists about Florida in wake of 'hostile' laws
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining two other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws and policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”
Tumblr media
The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization, and Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group, in issuing travel advisories for the Sunshine State, where tourism is one of the state's largest job sectors.
The warning approved Saturday by the NAACP's board of directors tells tourists that, before traveling to Florida, they should understand the state of Florida "devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”
An email was sent Sunday morning to DeSantis' office seeking comment. The Republican governor is expected to announce a run for the GOP presidential nomination this week.
Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists, and tourism is one of its biggest industries. More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels, according to Visit Florida, the state's tourism promotion agency. Tourism supports 1.6 million full-time and part-time jobs, and visitors spent $98.8 billion in Florida in 2019, the last year figures are available.
Several of Florida's Democratic mayors were quick to say Sunday that their cities welcomed diversity and inclusion.
“EVERYONE is always welcome and will be treated with dignity and respect,” tweeted Mayor Ken Welch of St. Petersburg in a message echoed by the mayor across the bay in Tampa.
“That will never change, regardless of what happens in Tallahassee,” tweeted Mayor Jane Castor of Tampa.
The NAACP's decision comes after the DeSantis' administration in January rejected the College Board’s Advanced Placement African American Studies course. DeSantis and Republican lawmakers also have pressed forward with measures that ban state colleges from having programs on diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as critical race theory, and also passed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations and analysis in schools and businesses.
In its warning for Hispanic travelers considering a visit to Florida, LULAC cited a new law that prohibits local governments from providing money to organizations that issue identification cards to people illegally in the country and invalidates out-of-state driver’s licenses held by undocumented immigrants, among other things. The law also requires hospitals that accept Medicaid to include a citizenship question on intake forms, which critics have said is intended to dissuade immigrants living in the U.S. illegally from seeking medical care.
“The actions taken by Governor DeSantis have created a shadow of fear within communities across the state,” said Lydia Medrano, a LULAC vice president for the Southeast region.
Recent efforts to limit discussion on LGBTQ topics in schools, the removal of books with gay characters from school libraries, a recent ban on gender-affirming care for minors, new restrictions on abortion access and a law allowing Floridians to carry concealed guns without a permit contributed to Equality Florida's warning.
“Taken in their totality, Florida’s slate of laws and policies targeting basic freedoms and rights pose a serious risk to the health and safety of those traveling to the state,” Equality Florida's advisory said.

I’m still walking around with a lump in my throat and always on the verge of tears.  Our children don’t have to live like this. Every country on Earth has citizens who deal with mental illness, only America has weekly mass shootings at schools, parades, malls, movie theaters, churches, concerts, etc.  It’s the guns.  Americans make up 4% of the world’s population but own HALF of the  857 million weapons in civilian hands.  Might be more now, that information is from 2017.  IT’S.  THE.  GUNS.   Shame on anyone who is defending guns instead of children.  Shame on politicians who won’t act.  Shame on this country for sacrificing the lives of innocents so a bunch of wannabe tough guys can play with deadly toys.  I’m from Alaska, every household had a gun because they were used to fill freezers for the winter. They weren’t glorified, they weren’t used to make small men feel bigger.  Now they seem to be some people’s whole personality.  Meanwhile our children are being slaughtered and those folks clutch their guns tighter instead of their kids. It’s absolutely insane. Those sweet children hadn’t even been buried when Florida announced they were doing away with permit requirements for concealed carry. They’ve scrapped existing requirements for concealed weapons permits, including an extra layer of background checks, licensing, and firearms training. Anyone can now carry a concealed, loaded weapon anywhere in Florida.  Oops, not anywhere. Guess where you can’t - the state capitol, where the ones passing that law are working.  Because they want to be safe.  The hypocrisy is staggering. Kindergarten babies are running from shooters in places where they should feel safe, while lawmakers are counting money from gun lobbyists and feeling secure in their ivory towers.  What is wrong with their souls??? I know you don’t visit here for this sort of content.  This spot on the internet is meant to be an escape, a bit of fun, maybe a dose of sweetness. I’ve got plenty of that to share - gardens are blooming, birds are singing, and yesterday was opening day for major league baseball. I love all of that, but right now my heart is shattered for the mothers who sent their babies to school only to lose them forever. Their toys and books are in their rooms, their favorite snacks are still in the frig, their laundry is in the hamper, and their pillows still smell like baby shampoo. But those sweet nine-year-olds are dead because the grown-ups in this country are willing to sacrifice them.  The party that claims to be “pro-life” isn’t. It’s past time for our heartbreak to turn into anger and action.

Florida is heading back to the 50s
So recently the governor of our state of Florida, Deathsantisis, decided that Florida wasn't fucked up enough. So let's really take it back to the 50's and so he did with these new laws he had passed.
And if the other laws weren't bad enough, no…now he is really pushing his back to the 50’s campaign. Some of the previous laws started taking us back there.
He has signed laws that restrict voting by mail and at drop boxes and deter eligible voters with criminal convictions from casting ballots.
He passed several bills restricting LGBTQ rights, including by expanding the “Don’t Say Gay” law, banning gender-affirming care, barring trans people from using public facilities of their choosing, and restricting drag performances.
He passed a bill letting residents carry a concealed loaded weapon without a permit.
And now according to Florida.gov, less than a year after signing a law that led to the removal of hundreds of books from public school shelves, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Tuesday that amends the state’s law to limit the number of books and classroom materials that can be challenged in school districts.
The bill, which goes into effect on July 1, states that Florida residents without children in a school district “may not object to more than one material per month” and instructs the state’s Board of Education to adopt changes to implement the decision.
Another new law bans colleges from using state or federal funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs, a consistent target of DeSantis.
That law included students like my daughter who took black history as part of her major and now found out that that class no longer counted and that she would have to take and pay for another class. Seriously?? Bad enough you want to ban schools for telling what we did to Native Americans, Black's and Jewish people but now if you did learn about it, it doesn't count. Can you say class action lawsuit?
And as if that isn't bad enough, it gets worse. Can that even be possible? Yes, with this Police Oversight.
Separately, DeSantis signed a bill Friday that would ban local policy advisory commissions from initiating disciplinary actions against officers, instead limiting the citizens boards to making recommendations on policy.
So that means no one is policing the police in Florida.
As if Florida couldn't get any worse, welcome to the wild, wild west. Great people running around without gun permits and with the stand your ground law and now the police won't be policed.
Yes, I know the trolls will say “Well if you don't like Florida just leave” and believe me I would be gone if my daughters weren't finishing their school here. In the meantime I am stuck in this backwards state.
So today my friends, we need to take a stand, we need to vote, we need to speak out, we need more people who want justice for all to run for office. We need change because if no one speaks out, it's just a matter of time when they will come for you.
We need to stop Florida from going back to the 50's when books were banned, where gays were in the closets, women had no rights and Black people needed to sit on the back of the bus. We all need to be the change we want to see.

🔍 Get ready to level up your legal knowledge! 💡Daily Post 4/19/24
🔍 Get ready to level up your legal knowledge! 💡 Every day, I'm bringing you insights into cases that either defend our rights or challenge them. Whether it's a victory for justice or a warning sign for our freedoms, these cases are essential to know in case you find yourself in a similar situation. Today, let's dive into a landmark case that shook the foundation of Fourth Amendment protections: Florida v. J.L. (2000). 🏛️
Florida v. J.L. is a significant case that deals with the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures. Here's everything you need to know about it:
Case Background: In November 1995, an anonymous caller contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department and reported that a young black male wearing a plaid shirt standing at a particular bus stop was carrying a gun. The caller did not provide any information about how they knew this or whether they witnessed any criminal activity. Police Response: Based solely on the anonymous tip, without any corroboration or independent verification of the information provided, police officers arrived at the bus stop and observed three black males, including the defendant, J.L., one of whom was wearing a plaid shirt. Without observing any suspicious behavior or confirming the presence of a weapon, the officers conducted a pat-down search of J.L. and discovered a gun.
Legal Proceedings: J.L. was charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a license. However, his defense argued that the evidence obtained from the search should be suppressed because it was the result of an unconstitutional search and seizure, violating his Fourth Amendment rights.
Supreme Court Decision: In a 5-4 decision, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of J.L. and held that the anonymous tip lacked sufficient indicia of reliability to provide reasonable suspicion for a Terry stop and frisk. The Court emphasized that an anonymous tip, standing alone, does not justify a stop and frisk without further corroborating information or observations by law enforcement. In this case, the tip did not provide any predictive information to support its reliability, nor did the police independently observe any suspicious behavior.
Legal Significance: Florida v. J.L. clarified that an anonymous tip, without additional corroborating evidence, is generally insufficient to establish reasonable suspicion for a Terry stop and frisk. This decision reinforced the Fourth Amendment's requirement of particularized and objective evidence to justify intrusions on individual liberty.
In summary, Florida v. J.L. reaffirmed the principle that anonymous tips must be reliable and provide specific, corroborated information to justify police action under the Fourth Amendment.

I feel like the more flagrant gun violence there is, the more States will pass Constitutional Carry. 27 States already have Permitless Carry laws on the books:
> As of mid-2023, there are 27 states in the USA that allow permitless carry, also known as constitutional carry. This means individuals in these states can carry a concealed handgun without needing a license or permit. These states include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming
