Video game devs not include an annoying, unnecessary fishing mini-game, challenge level: apparently impossible!

What does fishing add to a game about killing monsters with swords and a magic book? I get game play loop stuff, don't want to be doing the same thing endlessly, gotta break up the combat with other stuff sometimes, change the pace a little. But we have story and town stuff for that! A shitty fishing mini-game with quests tied to it is just obnoxious. It's particularly obnoxious because I like to do all the quests in games that have them, checking all them off the list feels good. But I can't do that because I don't want to spend hours and hours of my life trying to get this bad finicky fishing mini-game to work for me, I refuse. (I gave it my very best shot, even looked up tips for it and tried again but it's just awful and I give up.) Meaning those quests are going to set in my quest log, haunting me the whole time.

I'm talking about Nier: Replicant by the way. Which I am otherwise mostly enjoying. There are a couple other things I'm not liking so far but the fishing really takes the cake on that. It sucks so much.

Like seriously the only games I've played that have been made better by the inclusion of fishing are Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. Other chill games would probably also be served by fishing but I just don't see the point of putting it in so many other types of games, especially action games. (The fishing in Ultrakill is also chill and fun and serves to make the game better but that's a special unique case.)

Currently prepping a DnD oneshot for a few friends and one of them made his character's hobby fishing.

So I want to give him a tiny fishing themed personal challenge. Like a minigame. Doesn't have to include a lot of mechanics - actually the more RP based it is the better.

I'm coming up completely blank and would appreciate any and all suggestions.
