azula headcanon
azula is def the child-free friend/family member who acts like she can't stand to be around the kids but all the kids love her. She's like a kid magnet and baby whisper and it actually freaks her out. Anytime zuko & mai (I hc that mai is izumi's mom) need a break they always give izumi to azula. She'll be like "Ugh, stop giving me y'all's child " but will never tell them no. She's the bougie, rich aunt for sure.

Hey Flameo. How do you think Mai and Zuko were as parents? I'm curious about your headcanons.
* My headcanon is that Zuko freaked out during Mai's pregnancy and Izumi's birth. Due to his trauma with Ozai and intenso fear of ending up messing jis daughter up, like Ozai messed him and Azula.
* With the help of Azula (redeemed, but still retained her characteristics in a mellowed down manner), the Gaang, Ty Lee, Ursa and Iroh. He gains the courage to start bonding with his daughter.
* Zuko is very soft and and prone to spoil her. Mai is the strict parent.
*They're less moody and have a healthy relationship.
*Mai taught Izumi how to read and write, Zuko taught her basic math, history and Art appreciation. But they ultumately decided to send her to a school with both peasants and royals.
* Druk is her protector and partner in crime.
* Azula is a tough-love aunt, she loves her niece, but won't coddle her as "pathetic Zuzu, you're being too soft."
hey, i like your hcs!!
i have so so many hcs posted about parents maiko and izumi. they are filled with grammar mistakes (because i wrote them like two years ago) and also they are nauseously cute (i don't write these things anymore lol).

mai's pregnancy, mai's pregnancy but angsty + my fic illuminated that i deeply love to this very day, pregnant mai
izumi's birth, izumi's birth but different

mai and izumi , mai and izumi part 2

hii, do you think Mai will be a good fire lady? Do you think she would want to ? And do you think she will be happy or she’ll want to de something else?
i like your blog!
That's an interesting question. We need to figure out what the Firelady's duties might be. For this purposes, I'll be assuming that Mai is married to Zuko, because even if Mai was together with Azula while Azula, I don't think she would have the official title of Firelady.
Firelady duties:
Manage court politics. I think Mai would be good at this as she has a highly political background and has strong cognitive empathy, but she would probably dislike it and find it boring.
Support the Firelord's policies and manage things when he's otherwise occupied. Again, I think Mai would be good at this, but she would probably be bored by it.
Appear at official functions? This might not be a major thing in Fire Nation society. It's more of a Western Europe royalty thing than an Eastern Asia royalty thing.
This will sound very vulgar but it's critical to the royal systems and how they function: act as a body to that will produce heirs. That's one of the main points of royals marrying, unfortunately. Mai can do that, once she's a few years older. How happy or comfortable she would be being a mother is it's own issue.
Act as a bridge allying the Firelord with an important family? It's not clear how important that is in modern Fire Nation politics, but Mai's family does seem pretty important.
So I think Mai could be a good Firelady. The one potential issue I see is that she could get so bored and depressed with her duties that she neglects them, and definitely Mai is not the most responsible character.
Would she be happy about it? Probably not. Zuko is pretty capable of making her happy, but she also often finds his behavior worrying or exasperating, and he definitely takes much more from her than he gives back. One of her best friends is lost to her, and the other ran off and abandoned her. Also, like I said above, she wouldn't enjoy most of the stuff she has to do.
But Mai's whole thing is reluctantly doing her duty even when she hates it, with only the occasional quiet rebellion, so I think she would grit her teeth and bear with it all, even though she's not happy.

Toph should have been homeless.
A lone wanderer traveling across the Earth Kingdom. She would have taught metalbending to anyone who wished to learn. Beating up bullies and helping small towns recover and rebuild. Occasionally blackmailing one of the MANY world leaders who owe her into letting her crash at their place and eat all their food.
As she gets older she gets wiser. Becoming the Uncle Iroh to the younger generations. She's never as gentle as he was, but she remembers him fondly and never hesitates to dispense some cryptic wisdom on some hot-headed kid.
As years pass she stops wandering quite so far. Instead she stays for long months in the Fire nation or on Kyoshi Island. Occasionally she drops in on that new town/nation that Zuko and Aang are building. But she never stays for long.
She never marries. Never has kids. The rest of the Gaangs kids refer to her as Auntie Toph, and she loves them. But she decided long ago that she didn't want to be a mother.
She's there when Aang dies, holds Katara like Katara has always held her. Whispers to her that twinkle toes isn't gone. Not forever. He'll be back. He's the avatar after all.
She's there when Suki dies. Unable to save her in the heat of battle, unable to heal her afterwards. Sokka takes a few months to join her on her travels. She protects him, even as he fights with a recklessness that scares her. Suki would want him to survive.
Sokka calms down, goes home to his sister and his people and the white lotus. Toph keeps traveling.
She hears of her parents death. She spends the next week helping a lost child find his parents. And she visits the Boulder on her next trip through town. He much to old to be fighting her, but they rematch on the ring anyways. He mocks her the same way he always does and never says a word about her parents.
She gives him her parents wealth, he runs an animal shelter now and could use the funds.
She isn't there when Mai dies. Far on the eastern edge of the Earth Kingdom when the news of the Fireladies death reaches her. She takes Zuko on fieldtrip when she gets back to the Fire Nation. He owed her anyways.
They find Dragons.
The new Avatar emerges. A hot-headed young girl from the Southern Water Tribe.
She nothing like Twinkle Toes.
She's so much like Aang it hurts.
Katara is getting old. She hides it well but she's slower now. Not quite as fierce. Calming down as the years slip by.
Sokka dies and it rips Toph apart. He was her big brother. He died to save the world. She spends a few months with the sand benders. Spends a few more months deep in a swamp where occasionally she can still hear his voice. Once she hears Aang, sounding as young as the day they met.
Katare is so quiet now. She teaches the young avatar to heal. But not to fight. Saying that honor belongs to a younger teacher.
Honor make Toph think of Zuko.
She's there when he steps down and gives the throne to his daughter. It's a lovely ceremony. Afterwards they go on another fieldtrip. They find sky bison. Living wild and free in small island chains far from the mainland. Toph tells Katara who tells her children. And Airbenders fly with Sky Bison once more.
Katara passes peacefully in her sleep. Toph cries.
She goes on fieldtrips with Zuko every year now. Sometimes they find things. Sometimes they fight people. Sometimes they visit places that echo with memories.
The war was a horrible thing. Toph knows this. But a small dark shard of her heart is eternally grateful for Sozins greed. Without it she would never have known her friends.
The house on Ember Island lays in ruins now. The house Zukos family uses nowadays is smaller, more inconspicuous, a friendly little cottage.
They stay at the old house. Laughing when they find the rooms burned from when Zuko chased Aang. There's a small spot outside where the earthbent remains of Melon Lord stands. Toph can still remember Sokka's voice planning, Suki's light footsteps. Katara's fierce fighting and Aang hesitating before the final blow.
Zuko can't.
Zuko forgets more and more. Until the only thing they do on fieldtrips is go places. To remember. He asks where Uncle Iroh is. Thinks Mai is with them. Doesn't remember that his daughter is the Firelord now, not him.
A new threat arises. Zuko dies defending his nation and family. The world's mourns Firelord Zuko the great peace bringer. Toph mourns Zuko the awkward friend.
The new avatar dies. And Toph realizes that she doesn't know her own age.
The world is different now. There's so many new inventions. Toph thinks that Sokka would have loved to see this modern age.
A celebration for a hundred years of peace helps her remember her age for a few years.
Theres a new New avatar. A young boy from the sandbenders. His voice reminds her of Aang when she teaches him metalbending.
The next she hears of him is his marriage to some fire bending girl.
She spends time in the swamp, helps the swamp benders fight against those who would destroy the land. She gives council to the Sandbenders, as they seek independence from the rest of the Earth Kingdom.
She visits the house on Ember Island. It's part of a protected forest now.
She nearly kills a man on Kyoshi Island. He was telling a story of the end of the hundred year war. But he got it all wrong.
The four nations are no more. There are more than ten nations now. The Water Tribes split long ago. Three distinct Air Temples operate separately and with different principles and beliefs. The Republic continues to grow. The Sandbenders and Swampbenders are still sorting thing out, but they'll both be independent soon.
The two hundredth year of peace bring war. As tensions break and new weapons are being used. Bending is no longer the most powerful weapon out there.
The two hundredth year of peace bring war. But Toph is not there to see it.
Three years earlier she sits in a cave. She had spent the summer teaching some kids metalbending, and even just basic Earthbending.
It had been... nice.
But she's so tired now. She sits in the cave. There are no other people for miles around. But she's not alone. The memories of her friends, her family, weigh on her shoulders and echo in her her ears.
As she sits in the darkness she hears a sound. A quiet shuffling and then a loud crash! As walls are reshaped and her oldest friends find her.
Badgermoles live for centuries. And these Badgermoles remember her. They remember a small, scared little girl who was just like them.
In the darkness the Badgermoles snuggle close. Keeping her warm. Keeping her company.
Toph sits in a cave surrounded by Badgermoles cuddling her. Slowly she falls asleep.
She does not wake up.
Above the world goes on. War leads to peace leads to war leads to peace once again. The avatar lives and dies and is reborn, over and over again. History stretches larger and larger. Until the truth becomes legends.
Firelord Zuko, Avatar Aang, Chief Sokka and Warrior Suki, Master Katara the Mother of the Southern Benders. These names are preserved, remembered. Their stories become legends. Passed down from generation to generation. Written of in both fables and historical records alike.
The first ship to leave orbit is called Aang. To be a sokka is to be inventive. Hundred of girls fighting groups are named after Katara and Suki.
Zuko the Tenth oversees the signing of a new peace treaty as the neutral party.
Only a few footnotes remember the Forgotten member of the ancient Team Avatar. The earthbender. A girl named Toph who disappeared from records shortly after the Hundred Year War, though rumors of her were recorded for nearly two centuries afterwards. Her story is a rather farfetched one. More likely she either died in the war or soon after. Perhaps, some optimists say, she settled down and lived a normal life afterwards.
Many centuries later a mining company makes a wonderful discovery. The ancient burial caves of the now extinct Badgermoles. But a mystery awaits within this archeological marvel. For nestled within the hundreds of Badgermole skeletons there lies a single Human skeleton.
She lies there alone, surrounded by Badgermoles. Almost as if she was one of them. Almost as if they respected her, honored her.
Loved her.
And in a small town, a blind boy hears a legend. A legend that inspires him. A legend of a girl named Toph.

I know this is a Beifong blog, and you don't have all the answers, but...Whatever happened to Sokka, Suki, Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai? Why haven't we ever see them in ATLOK (Avatar: The Legend Of Korra)?
Sokka
Well um, Sokka's dead for sure. We know he died before tlok, Katara mentions this in the first episode. The statue commemorating him also seems to be rather recent, as it is part of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Centre, which was built by Varrick, I think. The fandom consensus is that he died in 158 AG, at the hands of the Red Lotus while defending baby Korra. However I couldn't find any canon confirmation of this other than hints.
We know he was a Conucilman in Republic City for a while, and later in life became known as Chief of the Southern Water tribe. My personal headcanon is that Katara was Chief until Aang died. After the death of the love of her life, I imagine Katara would withdraw more and share or hand over this particular responsibility to Sokka. I have more headcanons but this is meant to be objective soo..
Tumblr media
Suki
I've seen a lot of rumours on Suki having died young, however, I cannot find anything confirming or denying those. From what we know, she went on to lead the Kyoshi warriors, she also acted as Zuko's bodyguard.
My personal theory is that Suki eventually left the bodyguarding duties to Ty Lee and continued to travel, spreading Kyoshi's magnificanet bisexual teachings.
She appears to still be with Sokka at least up until 124 AG, so... just into her fourties if I'm doing the math right. I do find it hard to believe her and Sokka wouldn't have children, though her serving in the Fire Nation and him spending a lot of time in Republic City may explain why they hasn't settled down yet. I do have headcanons (*cough* Baatar Sr *cough*)
Aang also tell Tenzin that Suki had "skills Sokka could only dream of" so... our underrated queen stays winning.
Tumblr media
Azula
Azula, Azula... We have no idea what happened to Azula. My hopes are that she will get her redemption in some way or another, but she is not mentioned in tlok or any other media that I've found.
So... let me dream. I've always adored the theory that Azula eventually became the Bhanti Shaman we see in tlok. Now, there are rough edges to this theory and I don't actually believe it, however it makes me happy.
There are certain surface level similarities in appearance, but seeing Azula gain enlightenment and a sense of peace in an old age means a lot to me. I could ramble about this headcanon all day. Feel free to ask me about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ty Lee
We don't know much about Ty Lee other than her still being an active Kyoshi warrior in 124 AG. My assumption is that sh was a member of the organisation in some form to her death/ or till tlok. If she were, I'd imagine her organising whatever Kyoshi Warriors there are in the Fire Nation. I could also see her being an aunt figure to Izumi and still acting as a defender to the Firelord in some capacity.
We have no explicit mention of her death, so she could be alive and kicking, doing backflips at the tender age of 80 something, hey I believe in her.
Tumblr media
Mai
While Mai and Zuko did break up in the comics, I can see them getting back together later in life. She deserves to be firelady, and I think she'd be damn good at it too. Something about the girl who was always told to be quiet and obedient becoming queen makes me all guddy inside. Besides, the similarities between Michi (Mai's mom), Mai herself and Izumi are undeniable. Jawline as sharp as one of those throwing knives, goddamn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whew! This took more than an hour of research and typing (mainly cause I'm slow as fuck and need to check my sources every 10 secs) so I hope you enjoyed, anon! While yes, I am a Beifong blog and asks about the Beifongs, particularly Suyin's children will always make me super giddy, I enjoy all asks. Sorry for injecting my personal headcanons and biases, but I did my best to be objective!

azula headcanon
azula's mental health issues last her whole life. I think she continues to struggle with derealization, hallucinations, and paranoia for the rest of her life. I hc that whenever it gets really bad she has to temporarily live with someone (zuko, mai, maybe even iroh) or go into psychiatric care. It bothers her but her family is always so caring and compassionate whenever it gets bad.

One of the things I hate about Zutara is that in fanfics they write Katara the same way as Bella Shawn was. She's basically a blank sheet of paper.
She's not allowed to have a life outside of Zuko. We don't see her have hobbies at all, we don't get to explore her trauma and how she started copying with it after that war was over, we don't see her go out with friends, and when she does, she only talked about how great her relationship with Zuko is.
She doesn't ever talk about her family, how are her relationships with them going, how her actions/situations have affected her/her trauma (example: Hakoda leaving, Kya dying). Instead, all she seems to care about is Zuko's terrible family, Zuko's trauma, Zuko's responsibilities as Firelord. In good relationships, the two characters must compliment each other, and that doesn't happen with Zutara.
The only personality Katara is ever given in Zutara fanfics is:
Struggling as Firelady/not being accepted by the FN. But the only reason she is Firelady to begin with is because she's marrying Zuko and we only ever see her cry to Zuko about her and him becoming a tyrannic ruler to force everyone to like Katara, so even the situation that's supposed to make Katara's character richer is still depended on Zuko instead of Katara herself.
Overcoming her fear of bloodbending. But when that happens we don't really see her struggle with it being ethical or her using it cause there's nothing else she can do. She makes a split second to use it in "enemies" that are completely out of character and presented as enemies bc they get in the way of the ship/writer doesn't like them, like Mai and Azula.
I know we often talk about how Zutara does a lot of characters wrong, by shitting on Aang/Mai for being the canonical love interests or shitting on Azula bc the writer is a sadistic ass that wants to torture a victim they don't like bc they view Zuko as an awkward turtleduck, but I think we need to talk more about how it also does Katara and Zuko themselves wrong as well.
Like, for people that say the like those characters and want them together, Zurarians really have no concept of media literacy and can't grasp the personalities of said characters at all
"For people that say the like those characters and want them together, Zurarians really have no concept of media literacy and can't grasp the personalities of said characters at all"
*grabs a megaphone and gets on a soap box* LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!

Have you ever noticed how Zutara shippers will praise Zuko for all the same traits they criticize in Aang? Like the possessive behavior, expecting her to follow his culture, leave her home behind to live with him, be submissive to him, etc. etc. are all wildly common tropes in the Zutara fandom despite the same people criticizing the same narratives surrounding canon kataang. Like I’m sorry but it couldn’t be more obvious most of y’all are emotionally immature white chicks who fetishize abusive men (not that Zuko is canonically abusive but these people sure asf portray him that way). Stop projecting on Katara, it’s embarrassing and quite frankly insulting to drag a powerful indigenous female character down to your level
LMAO the last part iktr. it actually annoys me the amount of art there is of her in red and then they want her to live in a palace with the same amount (or usually more 😃) of children that she has with aang. mind you the same people call canon katara a baby maker for having 3 kids.
also the way people (including some canon shippers) decided katara was a housewife because she wasn’t in a flashback with her husband and not that she was at work idk healing or teaching? like since when do healers heal in their bedroom especially in atla (yagoda comes to mind)? but these same people can give you a list of “important” things the firelady supposedly does which is not supported by the canon at all. so funny how their imagination runs wild depending on who katara is and isn’t with.
and for the first part, lol zuko literally threw a guy into a vase for talking to mai while aang makes faces when he gets jealous. plus judging from EIP katara could put him in his place if he did anything that stupid again (even tho we already see he has learnt from that in the N&S comic 🤧)

Do you think that Zuko ended up with Jin?
I think Zuko probably often struggles to remember that she existed, much less her name. They went on one, short date when Jin had no idea who Zuko really was, and that's it. There are multiple obstacles to her and Zuko even coming close to getting back together, and her background and social status makes it very unlikely that Zuko would pursue her to be his Firelady.
