Exploring the Role of Music and Art in Old Age Homes
In the realm of retirement and senior living, beyond the support of regular medical support, there's a growing recognition of the significance of holistic care, which includes activities that cater to the emotional and mental well-being of residents.  The progressive global thinking on the transformative role of music and art exposure in such facilities is the new dimension that enriches retired life.
Reducing Isolation through Community Engagement:
Retirement can sometimes lead to a sense of isolation for seniors, especially if they have lost a spouse or live far from family. Music and art programs in old age homes offer a communal space for residents to come together, fostering a sense of belonging and companionship. Group activities such as choir singing or art classes not only provide social interaction but also contribute to building a supportive community.
Tumblr media
Enhancing cognitive performance and memory:
Research suggests that engaging in music and art stimulates cognitive functions in the elderly. These activities have been linked to improved memory retention, enhanced problem-solving skills, and a reduction in the risk of cognitive decline. Incorporating these elements into the daily routine of an elder - home contributes to the overall mental well-being of its residents.
Tumblr media
Emotional well-being and stress reduction:
Music and art have profound effects on emotions. Listening to music, creating art, or music can act as a therapeutic outlet for seniors, helping them manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Old age homes that incorporate regular music sessions or art therapy provide residents with a means to express themselves creatively, leading to a positive impact on their emotional well-being. It unfailingly evokes a sense of elation and positivity.
Tumblr media
Promoting Physical Activity and Mobility:
Participating in musical activities often involves movement, whether it's dancing, clapping, or playing instruments. Or in the yoga sessions, or in the gym, to have recorded music playing is a big positive.  Similarly, art sessions may include activities that encourage fine motor skills. Engaging in these activities promotes physical activity and helps maintain mobility among the elderly, contributing to a healthier, active and enjoyable retired life.
Tumblr media
Customizing Programs for Diverse Interests:
Every resident in an old age home has unique preferences and interests. Tailoring music and art programs to accommodate diverse tastes ensures that everyone can find something enjoyable and meaningful. Whether it's classical music, painting, or folk art, providing a variety of options caters to the individual needs and preferences of the residents. In the holistic approach to senior living, the incorporation of music and art exposure is truly an innovation. By recognizing and embracing the therapeutic harmony of music and art, we can enhance the quality of life for our seniors, making their retirement years truly golden.
Tumblr media
There are a few retired homes in Europe and Japan that make music and art integral to their design. However, Aumorto in Kolkata – India is a senior living initiative that incorporates music, cultural shows, art exhibitions – in fact, this facility has a remarkable art gallery (galerie la mere). There are artists regularly staging musical shows for the benefit of the residents. There are at exhibitions by wellknown and emerging artists from India and overseas that are showcased here. The residents themselves take part in cultural events and stage performances – dance, vocal and instrumental music.
Its indeed leading the way through their innovations in retired living places in India.

CHIAROSCURO: A BALANCING ACT BY SUBHENDU DAS
With his muted colour palette and noteworthy three-sided paintings. Subhendu gives voice to the illimitable human emotions. Triangle being the strongest compositional shape he adds a sense of visual unity to it with his articulate forms. His works are set out to expose the essence, essentials or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts. He uses traditional art mediums such as acrylic, ink and oil colours to create his works on jute paper. There is a personal language in his oeuvre that relates not only to the work but also to the sense of simplicity. The masterful use of gold dust delivers righteous purity and immaculate sophistication. He establishes the connections among art, beauty and desire. Making a case with characteristic grace, sensitivity, and philosophical depth he supports his vision of happiness and unhappiness in life. We may discover misery in pursuit of beauty, or find that beauty offers no more than a tantalizing promise of happiness. But if beauty is always dangerous, it is also a pressing human concern that we must seek to understand, and not suppress.
Tumblr media
He interprets truth and lies with lights and shadows in his paintings. Subhendu believes light and shadow are two halves of a whole, twin forces that direct our lives; they are essential to maintaining the balance of life. Light, an ancient symbol central to many sacred traditions. is represented by the qualities of radiance, sanctity, love, justice, and every spiritual attribute that emanates from divinity; light is even thought to be eternal, boundless, and changeless. It’s opposite, shadow, or darkness is most characterized by temporality, limitations, and continual change. The entire physical world is a shadow of the world of light, a temporary dust heap, or an illusion that can vanish in a moment, ultimately a deception meant to distract our attention from the light it is reflecting. Shadow needs light, as light needs shadow. Together, their opposition represents a two-fold process designed to bring about the spiritual evolution of humanity, the transformation of individual lives and our relationships with others. Both parts of the whole are needed for progress and transformation. Contrast and opposition create structure. They are necessary to make us who we can become.
Born in Barrackpore, West Bengal Subhendu has exhibited his paintings all over India. Some of his commendable exhibitions have been held in India International Centre in 2001, Triveni Kala Sangam in 2002 and 2004, Nandalal Bose Gallery in 2013, Academy of Fine Arts in the year 2018 and India Art Festival in 2018 and 2019. Fine art graduate from Kolkata Government Art College he currently resides and works in Delhi.

India's First of Its Kind and Biggest Fashion Pageant for Differently-abled Fashion and Disability - Walking with a Differenc'e
Tumblr media
News Desk, Kolkata: WWAD (Walk With A Difference) is a social initiative by AIMS Media to discover the hidden talents of persons with disabilities in the fields of Clothing, Fashion, Art, Music, Dance and Sports through social events and exhibitions. Since 2010, AIMS Media has been building an inclusive and accessible society by imparting new-age skills, capacity building and vocational training to people with disabilities across India and overseas for their sustainable livelihoods and economic inclusion. After the first and second seasons in Delhi and Bangalore in 2015 and 2016 respectively, WWAD took place this year at Kolkata. At the WWAD 2022 Audition that was held on 12th November at The Heritage School, twelve hundred contestants participated out of which thirty finalists were chosen by a panel of judges composed of renowned personalities from different walks of life. The selected finalists hailed from Assam, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, among other states. At the Finale, the thirty talents have showcased their skills and confidence through fashion walks exhibiting their abilities beyond their disability. The finalists have walked for designers who have particularly kept adaptability and accessibility in mind while designing and stitching the clothes, right from replacing buttons with velcro for the benefit of individuals with fine motor issues and making reversible garments for visually impaired participants to using fabrics which cause no sensory issues for the finalists.
Tumblr media
The Finale has been graced by eminent personalities, film makers, designers and artists who are impressed and inspired by their talent and style and wish to give them opportunities that would impact their lives positively. Singer India Ltd supported this evening by providing dresses and gifts to all the participants and also provide certificates, gifts to the designers who made all beautiful dresses for them. Apart from fashion, WWAD 2022 has also opened up avenues for PwDs in the area of sports by launching Football For All, an initiative of India Khelo Football in collaboration with AIMS Media. Football, as a sport, is an integral part of Bengali life and Football for All promotes this game in a disability friendly manner. During the event, WWAD started important conversations on fashion vis-a-vis disability. In order to simplify and elucidate on the topic for all WWAD stakeholders and the society at large, the organizers have decided to publish a book on the topic. The cover of a book tentatively titled Fashion Disability Paradox has also been launched at the WWAD 2022 Finale, opening up discourse surrounding fashion and disability in an attempt to bridge the gap. WWAD 2022 has also featured world class creative art performances by eminent musician Pt. Tanmay Bose and renowned dance choreographer Sangram Mukherjee. The mesmerizing performances have been successful in showcasing the multifaceted talents of the finalists. All thirty finalists have been awarded with cash 25000/ and corporate gifts. The finale has been witnessed by corporate CXOs, policy-makers, heads of institutions and bureaucrats who have appreciated and been involved in the upliftment of the community, giving rise to an inclusive and accessible society. Through WWAD, people with disabilities get a chance to work in an attractive and glamorous industry like fashion.
Tumblr media
Previously, WWAD participants have walked for huge national and international brands. This year, too, the organizers are confident that the finalists will get a chance to shine bright in the inclusive fashion industry. But the main attraction of the evening was the ramp walk performance. Kavita Bhist from Uttarakhand was awarded as the best performer of the show. Kavita survived the acid attack, she lost her eyesight. But Singer India Limited took her side and helped her to move forward. Kavita said that, Singer India helped her personally to take initiative to open her own sewing school, also she mentioned that she couldn't participate in the WWAD if Singer India Ltd did not help her out. We have talked with Alpana Sarna the General Manager, HR,CSR Head of Singer India Ltd. She told us ," Singer company will always support those who want to make a living out of the love of sewing. And always will be in forward to support platforms like WWAD, where underprivileged people can show their hidden talent". DAY 3594
Jalsa, Mumbai               Jan 26/27,  2018               Fri/Sat 1:26 AM
Birthday - EF - Jitendar Shir        Saturday, Jan 27, 2018 .. our love and birthday greetings to Jitendra .. love Ef
So the body responds to the killer pain drug .. which subjects the frame to feel as though there never was a problem .. but there is and the subjugation is momentary .. later as mobility of some kind activates whatever is needed for it to activate it responds positively .. to a limited extent ..
Its considered unethical to describe one’s aliments, publicly .. so it had never been done .. well .. somewhat .. but never entirely .. I wonder then if the entirety were to be ever expressed would it stop the constant enquiry of well being .. I do understand its value and its concern from genuine well wishers, but all of that could well be overlooked ..
Earlier action injuries to my spine, and later my battle with TB which attacked the spine in the L2 -L5 .. what ever that means, regions has aggravated .. either more action, or just aggravated, because it has a mind of its own .. aggravation is not just a difficult sounding spelled word .. it has severe repercussions .. eg., getting into bed and coming out of it is a process .. getting out is a crawl on the floor, to move to either washroom or just get up because its morning .. after some difficult manoeuvrings which involves deeds that acrobats perform with ease, a relative mobility is achieved under the select dosage of pain killers .. spasms prevent a sitting lying walking any position .. right now as I punch my Blog its a tender situation .. because sitting up is a painful exercise ..
Then there is the left shoulder .. the rotor cup of it has a tear .. again due to extreme action .. that has got further aggravated with continuous work loads .. so now the strong hand has been depleted of its working .. I learn , unfortunately, to now convert from a lefty to a righty .. eating, brushing teeth, wearing clothes and on is an exercise in some very awkward callisthenics ..  alright not over yet .. my two wrists are in severe pain .. on investigation the same results .. they are having a history of some trauma to them earlier on and now some portions that attach it to the stem of the arm are separated so there is continuous discomfort and pain .. more when I write or punch lap tops ..
Medication and surgery suggestions are done almost every day with the specialists in respective departments .. reports are made .. instructions followed .. different opinions crowd the mind .. and one diligently follows all .. well all that bring relief .. or should I say limited relief ..
The medication has reverse reactions too .. my system that has been the victim of several accidents and procedures, has limitations on what can or cannot be consumed .. liver kidney, muscle and other factors come into the discussions and one obeys the doctors guidances ..
And life moves on .. work continues, in pain and discomfort .. of the physical kind .. there are of course other modes too .. of the mental kind .. and one copes with them too .. there is the creative , there is the domestic, there is the social and moral .. and such like ..
BUT no worries .. life would be so mundane if all this were not to be ..
YES .. I do quite honestly wonder ‘what if I was a normal body fit person, without the encumbrances that I carry each moment .. how would life have treated me  .. would it have been greatly more advantageous .. would it have been greatly more challenging .. yes challenging .. for even the perfect and the normal bodied have issues at times ... but no .. it still diverts my mind often to see the normality in the others and not in mine ..
So .. DAMN .. to hell with it .. ! I shall live in such .. and without concern and sympathy and empathy and every other ‘..thy’ in the vocabulary, from others and well wishers  .. got it .. !!
Good .. !
Lets celebrate then ..” bring them close that send adoration .. bring them even closer that do not” ~
That is what is rumoured all over in some kind of philosophical verbology  .. not for me though .. I shall bring close and never seek alternates .. because I have none ..
Got it ..
Cool ..
Tumblr media
He paints .. the one on the right on black jacket known more popularly by his name - Dilip De ..
We were in the same social circle in Kolkata during 1962 - 1968 .. he was this very officious serious corporate head at the Shipping Co., at Mackinnon Mackenzie , in the building of which, in a small corner , where I used to work to seek brokerage for for my little firm, that I worked with .. times changed I left to be an actor .. he left in some retirement mode, married Shobha De, writer, columnist, journalist of great repute, and one feared by all because of her critique column , sparing none with her strong views  .. and one fine day surprised the  art community by painting .. HOLD thy BREATHE .. on a mobile phone .. the smart one ..
That painting you see of mine is the one done on a mobile phone !! Amazing !
So Jaya and I were invited to inaugurate his exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery down town ..”a difficult place to get into, and harder still to get out of ..”
An evening of rushed praisings and crowded movements .. there were more cameras and selfies, than the array of his paintings at the well preserved Art Gallery .. at the end of which I was fortunate to be gifted my own imagery, sold to a kind person on a Charity for a noble cause .. at a sizeable price .. !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.... this crowed just appeared from nowhere .. a tough struggle to get to the car .. shoulder and spine being extended and drawn on .. pain .. but smile and love and obligation on face and deed ..
These are the reality .. these are without condition and justification .. these are my soul and heart .. they shall remain with me , unlike the may others that shall not ..
Tumblr media
NO ... this is not a quick dress change at the same event ..!! its the element of the one earlier in the day .. for a meet the members that work on the brand I endorse - Cycle Agarbatti ..
and then after ..
A lone, solitary, dinner by my spine friendly chair .. the TV with the latest Sports happenings .. and then THIS .. this the most loved moment in the DAY .. my Ef, my family .. my confidante’s, barring a few .. my 3594 , CONNECT .. !
thank you Lord for this gracious gift .. so long as I have you .. you the Ef, I am a content man .. beyond all else .. and that is BEYOND ALL ELSE ..
