Can you believe it's just over a week until 2024? To give us a kickstart to the new year (or at least some time to figure out our picks!), I thought I'd post the January challenge!
Tumblr media
It's the New Year! Watch a movie about a new beginning. Some suggestions here and here.
And hey, while it might be the New Year, that doesn't mean we have to leave 2023 cinema behind. Watch one of Indiewire's Top 25 films of 2023.
Martin Luther King Day is this month. Watch a movie about him, or any political activist who tried to leave the world better than they entered it.
Awards Season kicks off this month too with the Golden Globes. Watch any film that's ever been nominated for a Golden Globe, including any of this year's nominees.
Watch a movie based on a short story. Some suggestions.
Watch a movie based on a game (physical, interpersonal or virtual). Some suggestions.
With the start of the new year, many will be going back to work. Watch a movie set in an office. Some suggestions.
It's also National Science Fiction Day this month! Watch any sci-fi movie.
Watch a documentary.
Watch a film with a colour in the title.
Good luck, and, as always, happy watching! Share your lists if you fancy, I'd love to see what you're watching. :-)

𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐀 𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐎𝐋𝐃 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟒) 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒
"Do you think you are alive because you can fight? You are alive because me! Because of what I did to save you!"
"Never forget who I am."
"It's not a child's place to save his country."
"Run to your mother."
"Death cannot separate us, for one life is born from the other."
"There is always a price for power."
"Most men reek of fear. In you I smell hope."
"Let the games begin."
"For centuries, these moldering walls have been my gallows. For I am bound to this cave, condemned by one who turned me. Oh, and I have waited an eternity for a man of your strength, your gifts, your will. A man worthy of the dark and all its powers. For if I am your salvation, you are mine."
"Why spill blood if not for the pleasure of it?"
"Because men do not fear swords. They fear monsters."
"They run from them. By putting one village to the stake, I spared ten more."
"Sometimes the world no longer needs a hero. Sometimes what it needs... is a monster."
"And you believe you know what it means to be a monster? Hmm?... You have no idea... but I'm going to show you."
"But what kind of man crawls into his own grave in search of hope?"
"A desperate one."
"Drink. You will have a taste of my power: the strength of a hundred men, the speed of a falling star, dominion over the night and all its creatures, to see and hear through their senses... even heal grievous wounds."
"At what price?"
"Once you drink, your thirst for human blood will be insatiable. But if you can resist for three days, you will return to your mortal state, having sampled my power and, perhaps, saved your people."
"And if I feed?"
"The price would be worse than if you'd never stepped in here. For I will be set free, having granted the darkness a worthy offering. You will become its vessel, as I am. A scourge on this earth, destined to destroy everything you hold dear: your lands, your people, even your precious wife and son."
"I would die before I harmed them."
"Indeed you will, I'm afraid. I, however, will at last be free to unleash my wrath against the one who betrayed me. And one day, I will call on you to serve me, my pawn, in an immortal game of revenge."
"This is not a game!"
"Ahh, but what better way to endure eternity? For this, little prince, is the ultimate game. Light versus dark, hope versus despair. And all the world's fate hangs in the balance."
"Then it will be my great pleasure to disappoint you."
"Drink. Let the games begin."
"Why think separately of this life and the next when one is born from the last?"
"What is happening to you? No! Stop it!"
"May God strike down whoever did this to you!"
"This is the strength you sought? But why?"
"Because I sent corpses back to Mehmed, instead of our son."
"You did this for us?"
"In two days, I'll be restored... I just have to resist."
"Resist what?"
"Resist what, ____? Tell me!"
"The thirst... for blood."
"Do your people know how many innocents you have killed? Was it hundreds?"
"Lie to me again, and I'll open you from your belly to your brain and feed you your intestines."
"And when you put them to the stake, what did you feel? Shame? Horror? Power? ANSWER ME!"
"Nothing! I felt nothing. A greater crime than the act itself."
"Tell me, how long can you bear it in here? Huh?"
"Long enough to strike your name from the history books."

Oh, thank you very much.
9. What was the last movie you watched? What did you think of it?
Ken Loach's "The Old Oak."
There's no film of his I dislike. They all have a certain romanticism in it that I appreciate.
This one in particular has clear and on point antiracist political messages without getting preachy.
14. Who is your favorite director? Why?
Tough question, 'cause there are too many.
Regardless, as far as contemporary directors go, I always seem to return to Michael Haneke.
I know that he is not for everyone because his works makes you feel like you've been punched. In fact, he's been criticized as a misanthropist, but I beg to differ. His cold anthropological lens—especially in "The White Ribbon," Caché" and "Amour"—is what draws me in.
20. What movies do you have on your current to-watch list?
Love Life (2023), dir. Kôji Fukada
A documentary: Gaza (2019), dir. Garry Keane
Maestro (2023), dir. Bradley Cooper
Barbie (2023), dir. Greta Gerwig. I'm rewatching it for a friend's sake, but that doesn't mean I won't laugh my abs off again.

Tagged by @missholson to say ten fave films. Thanks for the tag. It was cool reading your faves.
Ok so we pondered on it as there are so many faves but we've narrowed it down to ten that we both really love and mean stuff to us and a few different genres/eras.
In no particular order:
The Servant
Tumblr media
Not only does it feature our fave film actor Dirk Bogarde but also the amazing James Fox too. We just love the exploration of the servant/master dynamic and the role reversal in this film. It's so tense, so sad, so gripping. And the film looks amazing too. Dirk and James play off each other so well. It also inspired us to write Linksfield just because we wanted to play on the same kind of dynamic but not so sinister.
Back to the Future
Tumblr media
Honestly it makes us so happy. Kinda including the whole trilogy in this because when we start one, we watch them all. It's just so fun and adventurous and we love anything with time travel. Have loved it since we were kids. Have always loved Michael J Fox too. It's just iconic.
It's a Wonderful Life
Tumblr media
This is in our opinions not only the best Christmas film but one of the best films ever. Watching George's journey through life, helping others, finding happiness, feeling frustrated to becoming broken and wanting to end it all, to finding hope and realising he has touched the lives of so many. It makes us cry every time and makes us feel better when we're feeling low. It's just so hopeful and we all need that sometimes.
The Third Man
Tumblr media
From the shadows and cinematography, the music, the introduction of Harry Lime, the mystery, the Ferris Wheel scene, there's nothing about this film we don't love. Just the way all the elements come together and capture you to find out this post-war mystery.
The Sixth Sense
Tumblr media
We wanted to include something more horror/thriller and we're suckers for anything with ghosts or psychological horrors. We actually are obsessed with this film and watch it every year to pick up new details. We remember first watching it as teens, renting it and just loving it as we didn't know the twist, spoilers or anything. It was fun back then not knowing. It's not just the horror elements but the relationships between Cole and his mum and Malcolm are wonderful. The performances are some of the best in cinema.
Brief Encounter
Tumblr media
First watched this with a friend when we were teens. It really struck us right away. The atmosphere, the dilemma, the romance. It's just a beautiful film and we really felt what they were going through. The ending gets us every time and their story is just something that captures that period of time and the restrictions of life so well.
Singin' in the Rain
Tumblr media
We're massive musical fans so it was hard to narrow it down to picking just one, especially when Mary Poppins, Sound of Music and West Side Story exist. But we've chosen this as not only is it a great musical, amazing dancing (likes you'll never see again on film) and just joyous but also it's just a really amazing film with a great setting, hilarious moments and simply tells a story of an interesting and chaotic time in film history. This started our love of Gene Kelly and old Hollywood musicals.
Rope
Tumblr media
Had to pick a Hitchcock film and to be honest we could have picked a number of them, they're all so brilliant. But we have a soft spot for Rope because it's like a play and is a really intimate intricate exploration of the psychology of murder. Brandon and Philip are such interesting characters and are based on real life killers which makes it more fascinating. The build-up throughout and the use of camera is just brilliant.
1917
Tumblr media
Sometimes you go to the cinema and you're captivated and still talking about it for days. This was one of those films for us. We do love war films especially WW1 and 2 so this was something we felt we'd like. But it was so gripping and so heart thumping not knowing what was around ever corner as it was made to look like one entire take. It was a personal story too, following just two guys. And it was just so sad and moving. The music and cinematography were just breath-taking and though it was a war film, it felt anyone could enjoy it, just following this journey through hell to deliver one single message that could change the fate of many men.
A Matter of Life and Death
Tumblr media
We've always been fascinated by film depictions of heaven/hell/the afterlife and ghosts and angels so this film was right up our street. Just love the use of black and white in comparison to the colour scenes and the exploration of how important life and love is. It's funny too and really sticks with us. We also studied at uni in the 'Powell' building named after Michael Powell and there was this big picture of this film on the wall and we just used to look at it every day and be like, amazing.
Thanks for tagging that was fun.
Tagging any/all film fans who want to do this :)
