A true Englishman doesn't joke when he is talking about so serious a thing as a wager.
Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days (1872)
Michael Todd’s adventure comedy film ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ was released in 1956. The film starred David Niven as Phileas Fogg. It also starred Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes (known as Cantinflas) as Passepartout, Robert Newton as Detective Fix, and Shirley MacLaine as Princess Aouda.
The rare picture of David Niven as Phileas Fogg in the Reform Club’s Card Room was part of a set just for publicity purposes and is held in the Reform Club archives. When it came to actually filming the scenes in the Reform Club they shot in the studios with a life-like set. The Reform Club refused to let any filming done on its premises for fear it might disturb its members.
As a current female member looking back, I might have voted otherwise just to let some daylight in to this once stuffy place.
Times have changed and a few private members clubs are quite partial for a big budget film to shoot some scenes in their iconic premises. This includes the Reform Club which has appeared in many popular films such as the James Bond films ‘Die Another Day’ and 'Quantum of Solace', 'The Avengers', 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Tenet', and others. I know there are now grumblings from current members that things have swung too far and the Reform Club is not a film set but a private haven for its members. So perhaps the Reform Club should close its doors on the principle less is more.
Anyone want to take me up on a wager that it will?

This was a few years before The Alienist, but I love how this photo, which graced the 45th-anniversary cover of Zoo Magazine, is giving Laszlo Kreizler vibes.
Behind Daniel is an abandoned military hospital complex in Beelitz-Heilstätten, Germany. It was built in 1898 and has been featured in films like Valkyrie and The Pianist. In 1916, Adolf Hitler himself recuperated here after being wounded in the leg. 📸 Bryan Adams for Zoo Magazine (2014)

The New Elizabeth Line stations interiors are like something out of star wars. I can definitely see them using one of the new stations for a sci-fi movie

The drama series Virgin River is the perfect TV escape. Set in a cozy town in California, the show is filmed somewhere else. Can you name the actual film location?

The giant log where Laura Palmer's body was found has moved. This Twin Peaks film location is found at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, Washington. It appears the log drifted down the shore at some point in 2022.

Waverley : Psychogeography
flickr
Waverley : Psychogeography by Russell Moreton Via Flickr: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychogeography Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England, founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester. It is situated about one mile south of Farnham, Surrey, in a bend of the River Wey. History During the first century of its existence, it founded six monasteries, and despite the members thus sent away, it had 70 monks and 120 lay brothers in 1187. It kept about thirty ploughs. The site was subject to regular flooding, however, and in 1203 the foundations for a new church and monastery were laid on higher ground. The new church was dedicated in 1231. King John visited Waverley in 1209, and Henry III in 1225. The abbey also produced the famous annals of Waverley, an important source for the period. By the end of the thirteenth century the abbey was becoming less important. By the time it was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1536 as part of the dissolution of the monasteries there were only thirteen monks in the community and the abbey had an annual net income of £174. Stones from the abbey when it lay in ruins were taken to build nearby houses, including the house at Loseley Park. The ruins of Waverley Abbey are managed today by English Heritage. The sign at the entrance to the ruins states that it was the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott's novel Waverley . However, this is probably not the case. Sir Walter Scott chose to adopt the name for his fictional hero Edward Waverley, the heir to an estate in southern England who travels north and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite uprising of 1745. Waverley Abbey was however featured in Arthur Conan Doyle's classical romance, Sir Nigel. It was the scene of his winning of his war horse, Pommers, and his youthful embarrassment of the avaricious abbey authorities. openbuildings.com/buildings/waverley-abbey-profile-15062
