can i ask why you are pro rpf, if you have the time to explain? not hating, just genuinely curious because i usually agree with you on other subjects so would like to hear your point of view

The short answer, I guess, is that fiction is fake. Everyone who writes and reads rpf knows that it's fiction. The character is fiction, no matter how realistic they seem. The events are fiction. No one is presenting it as a historical account or something. The act of writing it doesn't make anything happen. Same for the act of reading it. It doesn't manifest. It stays fiction.

But also, bc I'm a wordy bitch... Every character ever created, since the beginning of time, is based on someone. That's how we make characters. We base them on ppl, or on other characters who are based on ppl. We only call it rpf when the name is the same. Is there a functional difference? I'm gonna say no. But even if there were...

If I tell my niece a story about a princess with her name and face, who lives in some crazy fantasy land, that is rpf. If you write your divorced parents apologizing to each other, that's rpf. Most self-inserts are certifiably rpf. Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies is rpf. "As themselves" cameos are rpf. And we don't care. In fact, we love that shit. It's fun.

A big argument against rpf is that the inspiration doesn't consent. It's obv disingenuous, imo, bc it allows for historical rpf. So, you have to consent, unless you can't consent, in which case you don't have to consent. That's bogus. Either it's the rule, or it's not. And no one is gonna blast somebody for writing a day-in-the-life starring Ötzi the ice mummy. Bc consent is not needed to be inspired.

What if someone sees rpf based on them and they don't like it? They are welcome to not hit the kudos, and to not read anything else from that author or tag, and to use any needed coping mechanisms, and to read the tags next time, just like everyone else. Rpf is not slander. It doesn't ruin careers or derail public opinion.

We know that bc Tijuana Bibles showed Clark Gable screwing all the women in his fan clubs, but back in reality he was happily gay and kept getting work. They recreated Mae West with no standards, but she didn't lose her appeal or career. Bibles featured boxers who kept on boxing, and politicians who stayed in office. Bc it was all fiction, presented as fiction, consumed as fiction. I can go overboard on the legacy and lineage of Tijuana Bibles, so I'm gonna shut up on that.

In fact, I'm just gonna shut up. Bc that's basically it. Rpf is fake. Rpf characters are fake. Every fake character boils down to an rpf character that was also fake. Fake things are not the same as real things, and ppl know that. The consent argument is also fake. The what-if-it-hurts-the-inspiration argument doesn't bear out historically. AO3 is awesome. Anything is a pizza topping if you believe. Tip your waitress.

ok first of all these are brilliant and i'm losing my mind and i love you, thank you for curating these to me.

i will transcribe them in a bit but i just felt the need to leave this "little" (it's long sorry) note:

as someone who's been raised catholic i just want to say that she is pretty wrong about almost everything she said about catholics, and i say that as someone who hates catholicism with my whole mind body and soul and who's been traumatized by this stupid fucking faith to the point where i can't get into a church without breaking into sobs dauihdasiuh. the catholic guilt is real but catholics are absolutely allowed to divorce and use contraceptives, and also have sex before marriage. the first one is met with some guilt esp from women altho honestly i think it's more due to mysoginist reasons than religious reasons, and the second and third ones are commonpractice and if you say that it's wrong and bad everyone will think you're a fucking weirdo

and even with the divorce thing, while the guilt is there (im pretty sure half the reason my mom doesn't divorce is because she would feel guilty about it, although again, i feel like that's got very little to do with religion and way more with internalized mysoginy), i cannot stress enough that divorce is allowed, almost everyone i know has divorced parents and they're all catholics. the church's official position is kinda weird (as of now pope francis basically said that it's "morally necessary" in some cases but he also referred to ppl who divorced and remarried as "imperfect", but like, it hasn't been forbidden for years, so much so that people get second marriages at catholic churches literally all the time, and i kinda feel like ppl overestimate how much ppl care about what the pope says. at least here in latam, cuz we've always kind of freestyled religion since it was imposed on us anyway, but like... in my experience the average catholic practitioner is INCREDIBLY less conservative than the vatican and i feel like most people don't even know what the pope says or doesn't say. and i'm saying that as someone whose grandfather almost became a priest and only gave that up because he fell in love with my grandmother, and he's been a ferverent catholic his entire life. also two of his kids divorced, one married a divorced woman, one is gay and living together without marriage with his divorced boyfriend, one never married, and one had two kids before marriage which necessarily means that they fucked, and none of that was ever a problem to him. oh, also, my dad had divorced AND he was a buddhist when him and my mom married. currently he is a spiritist)

i think it might be possible that u technically have to ask for "permission" to the church to remarry in church, but in practice i think it's more of a ritualistic thing than actually asking for permission, cuz i've never met a single person who had them say no. it was pretty much "hey local bishop guy so my husband sucked and we divorced can i marry again" "sure lol". obviously it sucks that you even have to ask, but it's nowhere near as strict as people seem to think

the contraceptive thing is also absurd. like i cannot stress enough that my family would absolutely flip if they found out i DIDN'T use contraception. that was always something that my family reinforced very strongly, ESPECIALLY my grandpa. i've never met a single catholic who does not teach their kids to use contraceptives. my high school was catholic (literally named the Holy Cross, fun times, although they didn't impose the faith or anything. in fact almost half of the students in that school are jewish, but like, still, there was a priest in the school board) and we were taught to use contraceptives, put the condom in a banana and the whole pizzazz during biology class

like yeah the bible says not to but it also says not to mix different fabrics and that doesn't mean it's actually a thing that's reinforced in most catholic communities doaihdaj at least not here in latam. in here non-catholic christians are actually way more hardcore about the puritanism rules than catholics are, particularly evangelicals, which are kind of overtaken the catholics' traditional role of being colonialist fuckers as they are mostly from the US so they come to further US imperialism through religion here. watch out catholic church they're coming for ur crown

and even outside of puritanism, "non practicing catholics" are absolutely a thing like ppl who are catholic but don't even pray or go to church, much less care about that shit douahdsaohj so like the stereotype that all catholics are like the very small minority of hardcore catholics is like the stereotype that every muslim lives by the ultra-conservative muslim rules. it's not true and it's stereotypical and taking the minority ultra conservatives to be the rule when they are not

there's also the fact that there are many different currents of thought inside the catholic church (a little bit like with judaism although way less flexible than judaism is), some of which are very conservative, some of which are progressive. here in latam in particular the teology of liberation is extremely popular (it's the one my family subscribes to, and i'm pretty sure it was actually born here in latam) and it's pretty progressive. for catholics, that is

and like mandatory disclaimer that i am coming from my own experiences with latam catholicism, which i feel is different from other catholic countries - my polish friends for example have experiences with catholicism that are a lot closer to those stereotypes than mine ever were - but since most of the catholic population in the world is brazilian (like me), and second place goes to mexicans, i feel pretty comfortable taking it as a ruler to measure general catholic practices

with that being said, however, the catholic church can choke and die in a fire as it is a symbol of colonialism first and foremost, its proselitism is one of the worst things ever, and even the progressive currents are still way too damn conservative for my tastes. i just don't feel comfortable transcribing something that i know is incorrect and stereotypical (and that in some cases is used to further oppression like with the Irish in the UK or armenian catholics, and i've even had some US-diaspora latinos hear some incredible things from gringos who assumed they were catholic, or, in their beautiful words, "had latino religion". but obviously in most cases catholics are the oppressors, especially here in the third world)

also, her assessment in the third video is absolutely correct. A/B/O IS just conservative gender roles born of christian and catholic imposition transposed to a fictional world where the genders have slightly different names, which is why i, as a rule, hate it dauhdsaiuhdauhda and even though the assessment that catholicism is thaaat much more conservative than other christian religions (it's absolutely not, it's Exactly As Conservative) isn't true, catholicism is still where most if not all of western conservative rethoric is born of, and ugh, it's so refreshing to see someone understand this and put it into words so well

so yeah keep that note in mind but anyway, transcriptions:

'would muslim families prefer betas more, and would betas be spiritual leaders', i feel like everyone prefers betas more, but then also Islam came to like, uplift women [a written note then shows up, which says, "like girls are seen as a blessing to have as kids"], so like omegas would be seen as like, a blessing to have as a child.

had a dream where i was at some bookstore flipping thru random art books and one of them had this like, section where ppl sent in questions about their art to the author and she’d answer it in her book, and some person sent in like an entire essay about how this online person’s interpretation of their fav fictional characters was ruining their life and enjoyment of the thing and how their art was horrible and they hate the artist so much and i was like ‘damn that sucks’ and then realized that they were talking about me and had even submitted some of my gay warframe art as proof. this is now my new life goal like i want this to become reality so badly

hi it's the anon from before! first of all, thank you very much for answering =) I didn't realize that you just started playing yourself and assumed your a D&D veteran already. What's your campaign like so far? and what kind of character do you play? If you want to talk about it =)=) and thank you very much for the shout out to your followers, I appreciate it a lot!

I know literally nothing about D&D besides the stuff I learned from Critical Role :D But with most things in life I somehow managed to come off as competent even though I’m not, so that’s nice ;)

I can’t go too much into detail about my character because my friends are following this blog and don’t know her backstory, so I’ll have to be kinda vague :P I’m playing a halfdrow paladin called Kah’la. She’s chaotic good/gay (byyyye lawful paladin trope), has the social skills of a brickwall and suffers from severe PTSD which is why I make wisdom saving throws for her every time sth triggering happens (thanks Caleb). Her deity is based on Trithereon but my DM and I agreed to make some changes. During the last sessions she learned how to drink tea without burning your tongue, and about what stuffed animals and newspapers are. I LOVE HER D’: My companions are a forest gnome wizard named Gnarf who has a mole as a pet and wants to be friends with everyone, a halfling (totally slytherin) bard armed with a kazoo/ukulele and a chicken (Chick Norris) named Hilda and a halforc Barbarian called Gredya who looks super imtimidating but comforts crying ppl left and right and gifts her new companions with stuffed animals.

Our campaign is very straight forward, four characters are thrown into questing together. First mini arc is about finding a missing priest of Pelor and solving an undead problem on the local graveyard and the world is inspired by various pieces of fiction not limited to D&D. Skyrim is in there as well i.e., we’ll be crouching through Dwemer ruins before we know it. I’M ALREADY SCARED)

A lot of people act like sg is their mean straight girl crush and harbour a crazy vendetta. Anything you don't like abt the show isn't a personal decision against you so stop throwing out unnecessary and unwarranted hate like some sad kid.

Throw out some thoughtful constructive criticism like an adult. Look at the su fandom (probably at one point or another the most toxic fandom everrrrr...) who got a bombshell that a lot of ppl disagreed with but instead of everyone being immature, people started getting excited and curious abt what it means. They learned to appreciate the hard work it took to get there and the whole thing brought our fandom together. Sg season 3 has changed some things and rocked the boat in some relationships. It's not a bad thing though!

Objectively there are bad parts of the show (it's about an alien superhero for christ's sake) but objectively there are great parts. Let the controversy and the debating/theorising and criticism bring people together. Ask people who disagree with you why they do! Speculate and learn. Don't just dismiss people so quickly. Fiction does matter, characters that aren't real might still play a role in your life, in your self acceptance, understanding of the world etc. That doesn't mean you own it.

Having passion is important but I love sg and the stupid hate and craziness that seemed to shadow all the great parts of the fandom almost made me hate it ! I really don't want any more fucking hate in my life, especially for a show that actually passes the bechdel test and has real three dimensional female characters. Ones that get screen time and real arcs.

Please just be quiet and stop trying to ruin a good thing for everyone else.

(Ps i'm gay af and love supercorp but hate hasn't got a place in the gay community anymore. If you act like an angry lesbian, we all get seen as angry lesbians. As unfair as this doubke standard is, make sure you use you anger wisely and not to just blindly insult ppl who already have negative and homophobic ideas swirling around their heads.)

1. What do you do when you relax: i usually put on music or watch a movie/show and maybe draw at the same time

2. What was your dream job when you were a kid: i remember wanting to be a vet after being told “artist” wasnt a viable career path

3. What is the most valuable thing that you own: in terms of money, probably my switch or computer. i couldn’t possibly choose one thing thats the Most valuable to me, but i rely on my computer and tablet for a lot so i’d miss them the most.

Well yeah you can be homophobic and watch YOI but would a homophobe make a blog dedicated to Victuuri? And I definitely agree that people fetishize gay characters, which I think is absolutely WRONG. I am fully aware of the fact that lgbt people are outcast and sometimes even killed, but this is not about comparing these two things.

Also I never said that my life was ruined because of some hate comments I get but I do think that I have the right to defend myself if i want to. I just want people to understand my point of view on this

(same anon) I kind of roll my eyes when I see fans portraying or writing the asshle vampires as either so out of character it makes me cringe (like they take stereotyping to the extreme) or they make them the perfect bf who puts all your needs before theirs. And then there's the theft of content. But what made me actually leave is this sudden social justice drama for 'underrepresented' minorities in the fandom. There was also hate to 'cishet' fans and oh god, this kind of issue never happened b4

At first I went along with it, because I didn't think it was bad to acknowledge that not every fan in this fandom is probably straight. But then... I started to see really passive aggressive to downright nasty 'call-out' posts aimed at 'str8' dl fans and accusing them of being (homo/trans)phobic. I've never seen this kind of drama in other otome fandoms. Ppl just didn't make it a huge deal. That's kind of why I'm glad I found a blog that I guess someone made to rant about this.

Oh wow, why do people with an interest in social justice even care about DiaLovers? Do yourselves a favor and get a new hobby, people. And I don’t mean that in a gate-keeping sense like “Get out of my fandom!”, I mean we are talking about a series that just won’t make you happy. Bluntly said, DL fetishizes abusive relationships. I’m sorry, but it just does. And that’s ok as long as you realize it’s all just fictitious and that IRL that kind of thing is not acceptable. I mean, you don’t waltz into a BDSM club and tell people that it’s wrong to hit somebody, right?“Underrepesented minorities”, wow. I know I don’t have to tell you this, Anon, but I’m gonna go on a rant here. Feel free to skip this following paragraph.

The characters in DL are abusive, misogynist, homophobic (probably racist too) and just plain not nice people. The reason there is so little representation of minorities in this fandom is because nobody (Well, I assume nobody) wants to read about, say, a trans person being horribly tortured and killed for being transsexual. Because that’s what would happen. The DiaBoys have zero respect for the heroine who is a fairly “normal” human girl - what do you think their reaction would be to somebody with special needs? Violence, rape and murder are all things that canonically happen in the games and if that makes you uncomfortable you should not be in this fandom, period. I like these characters but I’m also well aware that IF they were real they would be horrible people who would not put up with my issues, let alone someone who is muslim or trans or gay or disabled or whatever. Truth is, the DiaBoys are exactly the kind of people you do not want to meet in real life. But they’re not real.What I’m trying to say is that in order to enjoy Diabolik Lovers you have to accept that its setting is devoid of any semblance of social justice. And that if creative fans want to stay true to canon their fanfictions/art will likely include upsetting themes (rape, homophobia etc). And any smart person should realize that does not mean those people endorse such things.

If someone wants to write a fanfic about gay relationships in DL then they’re free to do so as well. It just doesn’t have much grounding in canon but people can write whatever they want. It’s only wrong when you act like your fanwork makes you morally superior to someone who doesn’t include minority characters. And making call-out posts over something like this is just plain insane. Like, why do you have to ruin somebody just because of something fictional???
