So just an observation.

I have played OG FFVII several times over the last 20 years and have played Remake and am currently playing Rebirth. I have also played Crisis Core.

I have always thought the game was pretty clear that any "romantic" feelings Cloud had for Aerith was because of the mako poisoning jumbling up his brain with Zack's memories/stuff he told Cloud when they were together. And that any "romantic" feelings Aerith had for him was her connection with Zack and Cloud reminding her of him.

I mean Aerith wrote the guy for 4 years with no response. That is a lot of commitment and a hard love to just get over.

I also thought the game was pretty clear that Cloud had a thing for Tifa when they were kids, and Tifa was intrigued by Cloud. I mean, he remembered his promise when he came back to Nibelheim. I like the telling in Remake/Rebirth better, though. I think it highlights how much baggage the two have and need to work through personal and with their own relationship. But I thought it was pretty clear Tifa was the end game. Cloud finally gets the girl after all that time.

In Advent Children, I think Cloud is hung up on not being able to protect and save Aerith from her fate. Instead of doing what Tifa did, which was soldier on and live her life, Cloud is perpetually stuck in the past. I don't think it was because he was in love love with Aerith, but her death was a manifestation of him always thinking he was a failure. Of course the whole reunion thing was fucking up his mind too.

Anyways, that's my hot take on the shipping wars. I think if anything, we need to ship Aerith/Tifa harder, lol. Especially after Rebirth.

Edit: To be clear, I do think in the beginning Tifa latched on to Cloud as a remnant of her old life before everything went to shit. But I think she grew to love Cloud for who he is/realized Cloud was her person. Her hero. Cloud's feelings for Tifa I dont think ever went away, they just got complicated with his mindfuck from the Mako.

Dating Sephiroth headcannons

-Sephiroth is the kind of person to ignore you completely at times, and at other times, scoop you into his arms and just hold you there without saying anything.

-He can be very cold and doesn't always tell you he loves you, but he does. Inside, he's the most devoted man on earth and will do absolutely anything for you, before and after his mental breakdown.

-Though he'll never say it outright, he loves you with all his heart; you are the dearest person in the world to him, the only woman he loves more is Jenova. If you asked him to kill for you, he most certainly would. You two but especially you are his goddesses.

-Takes the time to visit you multiple times a day, every day, even if nothing interesting happens. To him, nothing is more important than spending time with his beloved.

-Nicknames (which are rarely used) for you are: Princess, baby, darling, little dove, my love, and fluffpuff.

-Concerning the origin of "fluffpuff", it all began when he purchased a huge, extrmely fluffy baby chocobo onesie for you. Once you put it on, you might as well have been a walking blanket. It was so adorable, his heart melted and the nickname "fluffpuff" was born.

-Loves to do beauty days with you, especially after a long day at work. He's a big strong soldier man, but at the same time, a cute soft boy. He needs some pampering in his life, give it to him.

-Cuddling you is one of his favorite ways to de-stress. He loves to curl himself up around you and just sit there in silence, enjoying your company and relaxing. He also likes lying on your chest, arms wrapped around your waist, while you play with his hair.

-Poor boy gets frequent night terrors and needs a lot of comforting kisses after waking up in a terrified, cold sweat. He does get a bit cold and bristly after such events, so do be gentle. Wrap him up in your arms, kiss his cheeks, forehead, lips, all over, just make him feel loved.

-Sephiroth's like a scared cat most of the time; you need to be gentle and coax him out of his shell. Then he'll start opening up to you and confide in you--some of his secrets can be very dark, but getting them off his chest is a huge help to his mental health.

-Speaking of mental health, as we know, he's not exactly in his right mind. He can be unstable and a little violent, though he would never hurt you. He'd throw things, he'd break things, he'd yell and scream, but he'd never actually hurt you--a sign of how much he loves you.

-If you can mange to calm him down during his tantrums, he'll love you all the more. You are the most precious thing to him; anything you do for him is viewed as a blessing. ❤️

“you’re sure this is okay?” cloud almost jumped at the proximity of your voice against his ear, the growl of the fenrir’s engine fell on deaf ears as your voice caught his attention way more.

he huffed, responding with a grumbled, “yeah.” cloud was always pretty curt, you knew that. but you could’ve sworn that his response sounded a little more choked than usual— not that the way your arms tightening around his waist had anything to do with it.

he felt the small puff of air you let out against his neck, hoping you didn’t realize his posture stiffening at every breath that left him, when in reality, you were trying your damndest to not lean your head on his back right then and there. a few days prior, you had made a passing joke when visiting cloud about the well kept condition he had his bike in, making a small comment as you thought aloud about what it’d be like to ride it.

and what you didn’t expect was to receive a call a few days later telling you to come outside as you heard the muffled groan of the engine in the background of the phone call— and you definitely didn’t expect to be wrapping your arms around cloud’s waist while you shrieked at the purposeful buck of the bike he did to scare you. you could’ve sworn you felt the rumble of a chuckle bloom in his chest at the noise, too.

“shouldn’t you be wearing.. you know— a helmet?”

“you decided to ride with me just to lecture me about motorcycle safety laws?”

“to be fair, i didn’t decide to. you were already outside.” you retorted, retracing one arm to point a finger at cloud as he barely turned his head to the side, only giving you a slight view of the slope of his nose. a quick rumble of the engine made you tense up real quick, closing your mouth as your hands immediately darted for cloud’s waist. he let out a choked hum of surprise, and you could’ve sworn you saw his gloved grip tighten on the handles.

helping with the courier service wasn’t exactly interesting, per se— but it was fun to tag along on a motorcycle with cloud, even if he didn’t say much. and although youd probably have a hard time getting the roars of the fenrir out from echoing in your head, it was pretty thrilling to ride on a bike, not to mention that having yours hands on cloud’s waist was a big plus, too.

“you know you’re also supposed to take like.. even more protective measures too, right?”

cloud scoffed, “so stuck-up.”

you gasped, “i am not—!”

“are too.” he responded, throwing a smug half-smile your way as he revved the engine. you rolled your eyes, smacking his shoulder a bit. “and you’re hitting me now, great.”

“oh, shut up, cloud!”

Just finished rewatching Advent Children with bro and wow that explained a lot more than I thought it would. Bro had never seen it and I remembered the white void showing up there and that the 3 villains were sephiroth clones. I completely forgot the other hints towards Remake.

But Spoilers for Remake and Rebirth I guess?

I now understand why everyone insists Remake Sephiroth is Advent Children Sephiroth. Like the exact same monologue about going to space with cloud. And Advent Children was him revealing this new bigger plan to cloud. If Remake Sephiroth was the original VII sephiroth he should still just want to use meteor because it's "mother's" will.

But like all that is old news for folks who remembered Advent Children when playing through Remake 4 years ago.

I think the things Rebirth builds on about the lifestream is more interesting. The pond that forms in Aerith's church in AC is a natural mako spring like the countless ones we find in rebirth. Flowers are able to grow there long after Aerith's death because of this spring just below the surface.

When Cloud "dies" in Advent Children he meets Aerith and Zack in the white void before they decide to put him back. He's released from the lifestream in the natural mako spring now in Aerith's church just like how Tifa is tossed back out when she enters with the whale.

Again for anyone who's recently watched AC it's obvious the white void is meant to represent the lifestream. But that means Rebirth is confirming the Lifestream is a bridge between the different universes. Zack enters the Lifestream and runs into Remake cloud who's also been pulled in. AC is all about how Sephiroth is still in the lifestream and that's how Kadaj is able to be possessed by him once he has enough Jenova cells. Cloud kills Sephiroth putting him back in the Lifestream. The Lifestream that connects all vii worlds.

AC Sephiroth then uses the lifestream to start appearing before a Cloud that has only just reached Midgar. His Meddling summons the whispers which fight back to keep things to the "cannon" timeline. Sephiroth of course tricks team Avalanche into destroying the head Whisper allowing him to take control of them. Again old news for anyone that knew Sephiroth wanted them to break the bonds of Fate.

But if Sephiroth is using the lifestream to mess with other worlds. it shouldn't be a surprise one of the Aerith's also already in the lifestream got involved too. As other's have pointed out the Aerith that gives cloud the not empty White materia isn't remake Aerith. But another Aerith that pulled him into that universe to give him a functioning white materia. But somehow Remake Aerith knew the hand over happened? Because in the white forest she asks cloud for the materia and they swap so she has a functioning white materia. That part confuses me a little. How did our Aerith know the handoff happened?

Also Rufus and Kadaj have a conversation about how everything's a cycle. That Jenova "Mother" will always try to destroy the planet and the lifestream/humanity will always fight back. Made me realize AC Sephiroth wasn't going back on his timeline to make a new one but hopping into the next timeloop. OG VII and Advent Children's cannon is locked in. Remake is truely that a remaking of the timeline made possible by Cloud and Co defeating the whispers that enforce the timeloops. So now instead of one spiral after another and infinite number of spirals are forming while the remake loop is still happening.

That's why Sephiroth waited until the *spoilers* cannon event to appear in Rebirth. It's an all the stars a line situation. All timeloops have that moment, regardless of how it's different in different versions.

But Rebirth's cannon event was just a test run. Sephiroth wanted to see how much power he could gain just from multiple timelines merging at one point.

Sephiroth already told us what he really wants. The Black materia but not the one from the remake universe no the ultimate black materia forged from all the black materia. And what's the next big plot point that could be a cannon event? Cloud's breakdown at the northern crater after handing the Black Materia over to Sephiroth. If there's any point where the timelines would over lap it would be there. We already saw the power boost Sephiroth got. If that power boost happens to the black Materia yeah that's a multiverse destroying meteor right there.

Wow was that a long wall of text about stuff everyone else probably already knows. But I just had to put all the clarity Advent Children gave me about Remake and Rebirth somewhere. Expect a spiral timeline graphic in the future. Cause I feel like i'm forgetting to explain some of it right.

an empty lot in the center of edge now adorned a small playground littered with kids. although some of the equipment was made from the debris of midgar, the kids seemed to love it nonetheless. after marlene had begged you to take her, you had finally given in to her pleas and decided to check the place out with her.

various giggles erupted from a group of kids playing tag while you watched marlene run away from denzel, holding out a beckoning hand as she pitter-pattered away. a soft smile of your own etched itself on your face as you put a hand on denzel’s shoulder while he fiddled with his hands, unsure of whether to follow or not.

he looked up at you, eyes blue like the midday skies. you’d always remind him how nice his eyes were, how it looked like there were stars in them with all the lightly colored flecks in the irises, to which he’d look away and cross his arms in embarrassment.

you looked back in marlene’s direction, nodding your head towards where she now sat on the seesaw and waved denzel over. “go on,” you said, “it’s alright.”

he looked around for a moment, and you didn’t blame him considering he was an orphan and had known nothing else than being on the streets from such a young age. your smile turned bittersweet as denzel observed his surroundings carefully before giving marlene a soft smile and running to the other end of the seesaw, the colorful metal sticking out against the dull atmosphere of the city.

you hugged your arms for at least some warmth as you watched denzel finally laugh in what felt like forever. it was like a breath of fresh air hearing the children’s laughter and squeals as a some of them played tag, others sat on the stone curbs drawing figures and shapes into the sandbox.

“he looks happy.” you hear a monotone voice appear from next to you, one that you know could only belong to cloud strife.

you flashed him a soft grin, “yeah, he needs this.” you responded sweetly. cloud never understood how you were so good with kids. he never understood how you were so good with people— in general. mako-infused eyes followed denzel’s movements, his curls bobbing up and down with him while he played with marlene on the seesaw, squeals erupting from both of them as sometimes they’d get too close to falling off.

arms tightening around yourself, you tried to stay warm. “he’s been through a lot.” you finally say, feeling cloud’s eyes on you. he had an intense stare with the way his eyebrows furrowed and lips press together in a pout.

“haven’t we all.” cloud mumbled, frown tugging at his lips as he looked back out to all the kids playing.

you put a hand on his shoulder cautiously, giving him enough time to pull away if he needed to. your hand was feather light against his bare shoulder, only slightly covered with his sleeveless turtleneck. “he really looks up to you, though.” you smiled at him. why was he feeling warm? is this normal? “so, i think we’ve done a pretty good job.”

cloud hums quietly as a form of acknowledgment before resting a hand on his hip, eyes still trained on denzel. maybe it was just due to how unsafe these streets used to be. maybe it’s because he’s so used to the despair that clouded the streets after the geostigma grew stronger, it’s such a contrast seeing joy for what feels like the first time in forever.

you leaned closer to cloud as you slowly rested your head on his shoulder, your hand drifting down to his bicep. you felt him stiffen, making a small noise of surprise as he fixed his posture.

“is this okay?”

cloud carefully looked down at you before looking back up at the kids. denzel was now on the slide, marlene urging him to come down from the bottom. cloud huffed as he crossed his arms, still letting you lay on him. he knew you wouldn’t let go anytime soon, he knew you’d save him from the grief that withered away at him. that mission to nibbelheim was traumatic enough, his memory never let him forget the horrors that went on in his home village. he never admitted it, but he enjoyed your presence even if you both were doing nothing.

“yeah.” he mumbled, “i guess i’m okay with it.”

you smiled, “losing that hard edge now, are you?”

“alright now, shut up.”
