This was the only picture that I managed to take of Penmon without people or cars in the shot. Penmon’s history stretches back to the 6th century, when a monastery was established here by St Seiriol. The holy well (with reputed healing properties) that bears his name is thought to be associated with this period, though the ‘cell’ that houses it is a much later construction. The remains of the priory that stand today largely date from the 13th century, when it became part of the Augustinian order. Inside the church, which still serves the parish today, stands an impressive cross. Elizabeth Cochran Seaman, aka Nellie Bly, was a 72 day record breaking globe trotter,writer, industrialist, inventor, charity worker, and American journalist. After reading a newspaper article entitled "What Girls are Good For" (having babies and keeping house), Elizabeth wrote a response to the Pittsburgh Dispatch. Impressed by her letter, the editor of the paper sought her out via an ad, and offered her an opportunity to write an article for his publication, after which he hired her on permanently. Her editor chose her pen name, Nellie Bly, based on a song by that title. Most of her work was focused on the lives of working women, but after complaints from some factory owners (who employed her subjects), she was assigned to writing about fashion, society, and other more common subjects for female journalists at that time. Not satisfied by her new assignment, she served as a foreign correspondent in Mexico. She only lasted six months before her articles got her in trouble, and she was forced to flee the country. Back in the USA she quit her job and moved the New York, where she pushed the editor of New York World to hire her as an undercover journalist. Her assignment was to infiltrate and investigate rumors of brutality and neglect at the woman's insane asylum on Blackwell's Island. In oder to gain admittance she checked herself into a woman's boarding facility, where she then refused to sleep and accused the other boarders of being insane. Her act was enough to disturb the other boarders, and the matron of the home called the police. She was convincing enough to fool the police, a judge, and a doctor, and was committed. She stayed at the asylum for 10 days before being released at the request of her employer. Amlwch Port, Anglesey. Some of the earliest records of ship movements from Amlwch are recorded in the Beaumaris Port account book for 1730. The rediscovery of Copper at Mynydd Parys in 1762 resulted in the need to develop the port to export goods and import raw materials.
