Somaya Critchlow's "Untitled (Pink Hair)" (2019) is reproduced from ‘Women Painting Women,' published by @delmonico_books & @themodernfw ⁠ ⁠ Editor Andrea Karnes writes: “Unlike [Marilyn] Minter, Somaya Critchlow often has her subjects meet and return our gaze, usually with a direct and provocative stare. She presents us with Black women, coquettish and confident, who enjoy a lineage within the canon of art history and contemporary pop culture at once—both areas that have been historically reserved for the subject of the white woman. There is a distillation of eras and artistic genres in her tiny boudoir portraits, which draw upon the voluptuous women of Rubens, the darkness of Diego Velazquez, present-day fashion, and pop culture. The women, placed in intimate domestic scenes, also recall Dutch still lifes as much as they do Rococo compositions or Paris Hilton’s tacky socialite magazine pictures from the early 2000s. The mingling of history and present-day references suggests the systemic and longstanding problematics, progress, and lack thereof with race, class and gender. The artist’s thinned oil-on-canvas works convey a moody sexiness at the same time they evoke kitsch. ‘Untitled (Pink Hair)’ (2019), for example, shows a close-up of a woman wearing a voluminous pink wig. The wig echoes the form of buttocks, and the woman puckers her lips, as if blowing kisses to the viewer a la Marilyn Monroe. Statement

When people look at my artworks I want to give them a reflection of their own emotions, of moments from the past or a wish for the future. I want the viewers to pause for a bit and embrace all these feelings and moments they may have forgotten while living their hectic lives and to find a piece of their own story in one of my lines.

Since my artworks are rooted in #ArtNouveau and the seductive drawings of #EgonSchiele it is no surprise that my recurring subject are women. Using mostly #graphitepencils to create bold pure lines, it is important to me to capture a fearlessness in their depiction of sexuality, intimacy and womanhood.

I try to achieve a certain level of contrast between light and dark, both in terms of subject matter and the execution. Recently I started to experiment with colours and include patterns inspired by historical ornaments and flowers I take photos of during a walk. Often, but not necessarily, my drawings include fragments of text that give the viewer a sense of what I am trying to capture.
