ナイカ | スペースゴジラ Subject Naica | Kosei Godzilla (SpaceGodzilla) [The Last Crystal Godzilla]
Kosei Gojira’s were a prominent sub species to Titanus Gojira first appearing in Triassic Period. The Species became a lethal competitor. Their ability to generate enormous amounts of power from their crystals however made them the primary target of the MUTO species and their numbers dwindled as the MUTO’s hunted them over the less powerful Titanus Gojira. By the end of the last ice age, the Kosei Gojira species was all but extinct save for two individuals.
In the year 1992*, a water filled cave was found housing enormous crystals was found under the Sierra de Naica Mountain. After people sent in to explore the mine never returned and recovered footage of an enormous lizard like creature surfaced, Monarch took over the operation. They discovered a full grown female Kosei Gojira and her baby, an infant male, only a few months old.
The two were attacked by a female and male Muto, the mother brutally murdered by a female Muto, her head being ripped clean off and the Muto laying her eggs in her. The young Kosei Godzilla terrified and traumatised at having watched his mother’s death fled across the land and into the Pacific Ocean with the other Muto close behind.
The baby Kosei emerged near Infant Island where Mothra and the young Legendary Godzilla resided, bringing the male Muto to the island and endangering both the Queen and the Prince. Yoroi Godzilla, furious that the young Crystal Godzilla had invaded his territory and endangered lives, banished the infant from his territory, after killing the male Muto he chased the young Kosei from his territory. Legendary Godzilla and Mothra protested Yoroi’s decision but to no avail.
The infant, frightened, alone and the last of his kind, wandered aimlessly, often the target for larger predators such as Gabara, Gyaos and Scylla he became hardened and adapted at an extremely fast rate. After fighting for dumped toxic waste with an infant Shin Gojira resulting in a viscous bite wound the Kosei Godzilla, codenamed Naica by Monarch, was found by Gamera.
Gamera brought Naica to the remains of Atlantis and confronted Yoroi Godzilla about his treatment of the infant Godzilla however Yoroi was unrelenting and forced his way into Atlantis to kill the child to starve the MUTO’s of their primary food source. Gamera stalled Godzilla enough so that Naica could escape, bursting from the ocean and rising up into space, the years of trauma and torment finally breaking the Crystal Godzilla causing an aggressive and vengeful tirade against Yoroi, vowing to one day return and claim the Earth as his own.
Gamera and Godzilla refused to have anything to do with each other after this event, Gamera furious that the King would be so cruel to one of his subjects, especially a child.
Height:
25m
Attributes:
Crona Beams. Can be manipulated in any direction.
Photon Shield
GeoKinesis. Generate crystal towers to feed on a planet’s energy sources.
Gravity Tornado.
Levitation
Telekinesis
Can cause hallucinations and send other kaiju berserk
Electromagnetic manipulation
Despite his youth, Naica can generate enough energy to power Japan’s Islands for 5 years.
His growth was abnormal, the constant stress he endured after his mother’s brutal death forced his body to grow abnormally his flying form being generated far too early for his age.
Nacia has difficulty walking and using his arms from abnormal crystals growing in his joints. These growths will eventually render the young Crystal Godzilla immobile in his older years. This disease plagued his species and contributed to their extinction at the claws of the Muto.
Personality:
Kosei Gojira’s are named after their flying forms, which look like stars: “Stellar Godzilla”.
During his time with his mother he was observed to be very docile and timid
Forced to grow up quickly he sought out his own kind, leading him to Legendary Godzilla and his guardian, Mothra.
Legendary Godzilla and Naica were very curious and friendly towards each other.
After YoroiGoji chased him away, Naica had to learn fast to defend himself, honing and learning his abilities extremely fast and becoming a lethal match for anyone that tried to prey upon him.
He lashed at Gabara with his tail and almost slit the Kaiju’s neck while defending himself.
Desperate for food, Naica confronted a small mutant eel like creature which would grow up into Shin Gojira. The infant Shin Gojira bit Naica and absorbed some of his DNA, which is speculated to have been why Shin Gojira mutated into his SpaceGodzilla form.
Suffers from a severe inferiority complex, and is prone to extremely violent outbursts and an inability to be empathic.
Despite this Naica has a soft spot for his mother, Gamera, Legendary Godzilla and Mothra, being the only creatures to show him kindness or mercy.
Loathes Yoroi Godzilla and it is his intention to return to Earth and kill the King of Monsters for putting him through hell.
A Kosei Gojira’s flying form was spotted by a satellite near Mars in 2017. Theories suggest Naica was attracted by the radiation Shin Gojira emitted however it was never seen again after this appearance.
*Said cave was actually discovered in 2000 in the real world.

kaibara x rin x kosei has been wreaking havoc in my mind for the oast 48 hours and i need to feed 👹👹 /sat /lh
HAPPILY, I've only posted about BNHA like once but I love the Common Sense kings sooo much
-Kaibara and Rin like to nap together pretty often because Kaibara's body heat is high while Rin is rather cold blooded. Kosei piles on top sometimes as well, although usually Kaibara gets irritated because he tends to be a restless sleeper
-Sooooo much clothing trading, they're all the same size after all!!
-Both of them like to cuddle up in Kaibara's lap. Poor Kaibara just wants to be alone sometimes!! He needs his personal space
-They all like reading mangas, usually Shounen, so they'll each take turns holding the manga book while the three of them read it simultaneously, and they all have a cute lil book club of sorts afterwards!
-Kaibara lovesss to style Rin's hair, he takes a lot of pride in being able to style it correctly and make it pretty!
-Kosei on the other hand loves to mess up Rin's hair. He tugs the hair tie out and plays with his hair and kisses Rin while he does it
-The three of them tag-team babysitting Rin's little sisters! Kosei is like a fun uncle whereas Kaibara is the more shy and aloof one, but the girls are both OBSESSED with the two of them
-The three of them like to go on runs or lift weights together, they're all very into fitness!
-Kosei is incredibly into healthy food and he likes to make his funky and weird dishes for his boyfriends, even though they're...not exactly tasty
-Rin on the other hand is super into Chinese dishes and he'll usually make a traditional Chinese dish for the two of them in retaliation (he's an INCREDIBLE chef)
-Kaibara likes to feed Rin little bites of his food and Kosei will lean over and steal several bites without permission. Yelling and chaos ensues.
-Finally, both Kaibara and Kosei like to call Rin by his birth name (Lin Fei-Long if I remember correctly) and Rin will say affectionate lil things in Chinese sometimes
Idk they're just so neat :( sorry I don't have much to offer but this was fun!!

Happy STS!
What are the dietary staples of one culture/region in your word and how do they affect the geography, politics, culture, religion and/or economy?
Happy belated STS! Honestly I'm the kind of writer whose worldbuilding can be described as "all vibes no substance" and if you look closer nothing even makes sense, so uh. I actually haven't thought about this at all. Usually I just use the excuse of "welllll it's a fantasy world so maybe they discovered some technological advancements earlier than us and some later" to run from my responsibilities. Also the entire story is set in Kosei so I don't have much to contrast it against exactly???
But generally I think it's just?? Medieval food?? Also the usual things you can expect like more seafood based foods near the coast, crops like wheat in uhhhh wherever they are grown. Flat?? Land?? Forgive me my geography absolutely sucks and I did not even learn it in english. However I will say that most Beasts covens often are completely self sustaining with farm animals and crops though, bcuz foraging outside consistently is both dangerous and not very reliable to feed a big community, and trading with humans is a definite no-go. They manage most of the time, though it's harder if they don't have ppl talented in nature/plant-based magic. (The magic system is... another mess. How are you supposed to regulate a system that relies on emotions???)
Also once while I was writing the first book I wrote one of the characters eating a french fry before remembering france doesn't exist. So. Yeah. I think that about sums up the level of my worldbuilding skills.
Tldr - it's an absolute mess, my worldbuilding skills are in the negatives bcuz all I have are pretty words, and I do not even have enough brain cells left to bs it. Thank you for coming to my ted talk I went completely off-topic

Your Lie In April
I finally finished the series and I’m sure many people know what happens at the end, so I’m not going to go into all that. The main thing I need to address, the question that needs answering, is what did I think about the series overall and would I recommend it?
Kind of? That would be my answer to both “did I like it?” and “do I recommend it?” And strangely enough, I do lean more towards recommendation than I do against, provided you just skip the unlucky Episode 13 entirely (not a whole lot is actually effected by it, so you honestly wouldn’t even be missing much story if you skipped it and went right to Kaori in the hospital in the next episode). Because Your Lie In April, possibly more so than many other anime, is True Art(TM). The animation, the music and specific focus on music, the angst and internal turmoil and poetic waxing dialogue all give it that vibe. And so like most True Art(TM), the final product can be subject to more than a single interpretation and none of them are “the wrong one.” You could read its contents as a teen romance story, as a romantic drama/comedy, as a black comedy, as a tragedy, as a psychological character study, etc., and they’d all be valid narrative readings.
For me, personally? Your Lie In April is low-key a horror story about an abuse victim who gets guided back into the darkness of the world that had given shape to his abuse and continously feeds into his depression that will emotionally and mentally scar him for life, and a terminally ill violin prodigy who, to give her remaining life meaning and leave something of herself behind in the world she’d eventually depart from, played EVERYONE like fucking violins.
Now, as written, we’re meant to be 100% appreciative of Kaori’s efforts to be Kosei’s light in the darkness, guide him back into the world of music, help him to enjoy playing the piano and appreciate the role music has had in his life and the lives of others touched by him, and “restore color” to his dreary world so that he may live with true beauty and wonder and greatness like he ought to. And sure, much of that IS worth respecting and appreciating since it does mentally bring Kosei to a healthier place than he is at the start, and gets him to be more open to more people and gain more friends, rivals, even a new family, and of course romantic feelings for Kaori herself. But there is more nuance and problematic aspects to this set-up than the story was willing to really look at and tackle in any substantial way, with the two key issues being that the approach to doing this that Kaori (and Tsubaki along with her) went for was to basically harrass an anxious, traumatized, depressed abuse victim, tell him to “get over himself and move on already!”, and forcefully drag him back to the source of his problems in order to face it head on, with no regard to what he wanted, what he’d like to choose for himself, or even whether or not it’d truly even be good for him at that time, and that the core reasons that Kaori had for doing so, or for doing almost anything that we saw her do for that matter, are entirely based in the service HER personal wants, which are partially for her to "live on" in some sense after her inevitable passing, and partially because SHE personally was so inspired by Kosei’s piano playing as a child that she believes Kosei "belongs" in the world of music; regardless of whether or not he might want that, she's just made up her mind that she knows best and nothing was going to dissuade her. And on top of all that, the ending has it revealed through a letter that Kaori, the girl who’s brutally honest about so much stuff, had been lying to Kosei from the day they met and through all that time they were together. She lied about not knowing him, she lied about who she had romantic feelings for, and omitted any mention of her terminal illness at the start. Again, Kosei only learns the full truth in a posthumously released letter from her he reads a long time after she's died, and it honestly didn’t strike me that much as a touching farewell from a dear friend, it read more like the manifesto of a manipulative mastermind detailing “How And Why I Did It All.” Like, she even opens it up with insults towards Kosei before going into detail on how long she’s known Kosei, how she was a bit stalker-ish of him early on in middle school, her illness and how long she’s had it and when she became aware that she’d ultimately pass away from it, how she changed herself for her remaining life span, the titular lie in April (the dub even has her say “You ready for it? Here it cooomes” all creepy and almost sadistic before she states what the lie was), how she toyed with the feelings of Watari and Tsubaki along the way as well, and in the build-up to her flat out love confession, she just goes full emotionally manipulative as fuck. appealing to Kosei through all the fond memories of times spent together. At the very end, she does at least apologize for being so selfish and for all the times she physically struck Kosei or was insensitive to him, and at the end of her life she did finally start to think more about what Kosei wanted and gave a fair shot to breaking from her selfish agenda in order to keep a promise to him that she was sadly doomed to break. So she did a lot of good in her life and I absolutely did not see her as beyond redemption - I just don’t think her last minute repentance was nearly enough of a makeup to Kosei for all the self-serving and hurtful stuff. It’s too little too late, and the only reason Kosei isn’t left off at as bad a place mentally as he was the first time he got deepy emotionally scarred and traumatized is ‘cause he has more people in his life to help him get past the tragedy (even Kaori in a spiritual sense), but I cannot really be as sold on the idea that Kosei will be doing totally alright from now on as the story clearly wants me to be. In the end, Kaori got more of what she wanted than Kosei got of what he needed, and that makes the story’s resolution seem like a downer.
Even in the final Kosei/Kaori piano/violin duet, which was stunningly beautiful, the sound of Kaori’s violin sounded eerie, like she was playing the Devil’s fiddle and trying to entice Kosei to follow her into the afterlife, which just made it relieving when she explodes and fades into the light. And it’s strange ‘cause this ending is a well-known anime tearjerker and made a lot of people cry, and you’d think it’d get more of an emotional response from me since I do love the character of Kaori a lot. And yet....nothing. At around the same time last year, the death of Korosensei in Assassination Classroom absolutely fucking wrecked me. It cut me deep and fucked me up, making me feel like I was losing someone important to me who’d given me so much invaluable help and good times throughout that particularly dark year. And I STILL can’t watch that moment without tearing up; I can’t even listen to the damn song because I’m filled with so much painful memories and feelings that come rushing back to me. It marked an important part of my life and left a lasting impact on me. This? Not even in the same ballpark. Not even close to the same emotional whallop. Because I was well prepared to say goodbye to Kaori and watch this thing end quite a while back, and the downright nefarious nature of Kaori’s actions made it a lot harder for me to feel much anguish when her time finally ran out. Her and Kosei’s final in-person talk on the hospital roof, with her breaking down, exposing her vunerability, and pleading with Kosei to not abandon or forget her was honestly a lot more feels-inducing to me.
As you can expect, NONE of the story and character issues I’ve covered are framed as being fucked up within the narrative of the series. It really seems like the audience is expected to subscribe to Kosei's romanticized view of Kaori and everything she put him through, especially since Kaori was not allowed her own POV where we get to see inside her head until that posthumous letter. Kaori has basically got a "good guy problem" that's the exact reverse of Gabriel Agreste's bad guy problem in that she's legit an interesting character and the most fascinating part of the story, but she's a terrible heroine. If you apply Death Of The Author and look at what is actually going on in the story, Kaori is a very flawed character who is dishonest, insensitive, manipulative and at worst downright emotionally abusive towards her "Friend A", and her motivations that are supposedly all about him/all for him are...really not that at all, they’re mostly selfish.  Fundamentally, I think Kaori is very much a good person and she definitely really cared about “Friend A” and the rest, and was seldom ever actively, knowingly seeking to do wrong by them. But she’s no angel - she never was. Her interests outweighed her morals a lot.
But this is all just my take. Everyone is free to read into this series what they want to, but for me, just as March Comes In Like A Lion shows how a depressed, traumatized teenage nerd boy can heal, overcome his issues, and forge a better life for himself with others he chooses to embrace as community and family in a healthy way, Your Lie In April shows an unhealthy proccess towards that exact same end that ultimately fails to fully and convincingly deliver. Take a bow, Kaori Miyazono. you magnificent bitch. You got your wish in the end.

Hi,...Can I ask, who are your favorite couples (romantic) in any media that you like (can be from books/ anime/manga/movies/tv series) ?Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks so much 😊
I’ll pick top 3
1. CoAi : Haibara x Conan from Detective Conan Series : I’ve shipped them ever since I was 7 ok. My first ship, and to the this day, my most cherished and precious one even if they’ll never be canon. It’s just, him being a detective and her being a defected scientist from the organization he’s hunting. Them becoming partners on equal grounds. Him helping her with her ptsd and teaching her how to live and being so protective over her. Her screaming after him, putting herself in danger to protect him, even ready to face the organization she fears so much for him. Their chemistry is impeccable, their banter is so so fun, and I just *clenches fist* they deserve to be canon ok their relationship is so fleshed out with natural growth and progress and😭😭😭
2. Ranwan : Mo Ran x Chu Wanning from The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun : two lifetimes, three different dynamics, them being so head over heels for each other. Mo ran taking care of cwn, feeding him, looking after him. Cwn sacrificing everything for mo ran, putting him first. I love them for so so many reasons. And they love each other too much ok they’d do anything for each other. Mo ran could tell you how many lashes exist on each of cwn’s eyes and cwn can mentally trace all the callouses on mo ran’s hand. Their relationship is about redemption and forgiveness. Their bond is too strong to be broken by society.
3. Andreil : Andrew Minyard x Neil Josten from The Foxhole Court : their relationship is all about healing and consent. It’s all about boundaries and processing trauma. It’s all about found family and ‘maybe I deserve to be loved after all, if it’s by you’. They’re both like “only IM allowed to kill this dumbass, if the rest of you so much as lay a hang of him then ON GOD will you see what I will do to you”. They’re both so dangerous it’s why they fit so well. They care about those around them the same way, don’t demand too much of each other, and always understand each other without much words needed.
Honorary mentions : Erina and Souma from Food Wars (the most PERFECT enemies to lovers with equal parts rivalry and sexual tension and I love that erina always wins. My favorite dynamic ever) and Kaori and Kosei from Your Lie In April (most pure couple with the purest strongest most romantic relationship. I spent a whole WEEK crying cause they deserved better)

Salutations! I finally figured out how to properly word a request I’ve considered sending for a while, though no pressure if you’re not feeling it of course!
How would Yusuke handle a reader who’s more like a Confidant and figures out later he’s a thief. They worry and want to help and take care of him? Not in a stifling kind of way but they notice how little he cares for himself in comparison to his art or thief work (he spend more money on art supplies then food to live!) so they try to pick up the slack. They bringing him food saying they made to much and if they notice he’s off by hiding or brushing of an injury they check on him till he admits it and help tend to him. They like him a lot of course but they hold out little hope he will notice them or pick up that they know he’s a thief, as that not his way, but that doesn’t stop their care for him or their hope.
Thank you for your consideration even if you don’t get to this, and for all your hard work for your followers and the Pantom Fans ^_^ wishing you and yours the best!
I would write anything for you at all, as long as you follow my rules!! Every time I post I wait for your little comment & I really appreciate everything you say to me, it keeps me motivated to write. Anytime I feel bad about my writing I go back to the lovely things you say to me. 🤍
Got a little emotional here but yes!! This was a fun request!!
Fox ;;
Figuring out that Yusuke is a Phantom Thief is easier than expected. Although he does his best to make excuses & explain how he found a new group of friends, it was strange to see him bond with so many different people in such a short span of time. It also correlated with similar targets. They had met the group briefly once & most of them were wearing Shujin Academy uniforms, which just so happened to line up with their first target: Kamoshida. Similarly, Madarame’s downfall happened just before these new friends emerged. The timings were all too convenient.
However, there were more concerning things for them to worry about. For example, how does Yusuke survive from day to day? Quite often does he mention that he spends most of his money on lavish gifts or art supplies instead of feeding himself. So they decide the best alternative is to make them something. When he is handed the meal, Yusuke is beholden to them. He thanks them multiple times despite their insistence that they merely made too much food.
It has only happened once or twice but he has occasionally attempted to conceal an injury, being very unsuccessful at doing so. Although he tells them that he is fine, gently pulling up the sleeves of his Kosei uniform reveals some shallow scars that have yet to be properly bandaged. Looking rather embarrassed, he does let them patch him up & is once again greatful for it. In return, he offers to hang out more often. Friendship is a two way street, after all.
He very much appreciates the gestures given to him & attempts to do the same, offering any support he can in a time of need. Albeit he may struggle with helping them financially, he does his best to give any physical or emotional support that they could possibly need. Even if it is something as small as flunking a test, his complicated mind can actually be rather helpful when it comes to giving advice though it can be rather strangely worded.
Yusuke is... Egregiously bad at picking up on implications. Unless they directly tell him that they know he is a Phantom Thief, he does not seem to notice that he is not careful with his words. However, the other Theives eventually pick up on it & tell him. Immediately does he apologise for keeping such a secret from them, as he did not want to endanger someone who was so close to him.

Sweater Weather Ch. 6
Kenji noticed how quiet Ben was as he packed his suitcase again, too focused on folding his shirts a certain way.
“You excited?” Kenji asked.
“About what?”
“The hotel stay?” Kenji asked.
“Oh! Yeah. We’re coming back after the run through, right?”
“Yeah, it’s just a week.” Kenji said and stared at his suitcase.
“Oh…Um, will it be that short?” He asked.
“Do you wanna just…stay here?” Kenji asked. “I mean, we still go in a couple days and make it the night before if you want. Have some time to cool our heads.”
“Will that be okay?” Ben asked.
“Sure!” Kenji said. “Let me just go tell my Dad.”
 *
 Candy hugged him extra tight.
“I hope your cold feels better, Mijo.” She said and smiled at Ben, who smiled back, bundled in pajamas and a blanket wrapped around to his ears.
“Are you sure you don’t want us to take Carmen?” Kosei asked and his daughter huffed.
“Daddy! I can feed myself and I’ll stay out of the way. Besides. That means I get to know Ben better!” She said. “I can make him caldo and spiced atole!”
“I don’t know what those are, but I’m gonna eat them.”
“Heck yeah, we are!” Kenji said excitedly. “Cause I’m gonna help!”
“You still cook, Mi Bebe?” Candy asked with a smile.
“I…I lived alone.” Kenji said. “It’s not as good as yours but…”
Candy cocked her head and kissed his cheek, pinching it.
“Pobrecito…” She said with a laugh. “Be safe and stay warm.”
“Owen will bring you two back in two days.” Kosei said and hugged Carmen close.
“Okay. Have fun!” Carmen yelled as they left.
She turned around with a grin, scooping up Bumpy.
“I’m going to make caldo for dinner, but for now, me and Bumpy are gonna go watch Ducktales and eat jerky!”
“Floss after!” Kenji called as she ran up the stairs.
“Think they bought the sick act?” Ben asked, dropping the blanket from his head down to his shoulders.
“Nope. But they’re catering to you.” He said, placing his hands on Ben’s exposed shoulders.
“Isn’t that my boyfriend’s job?” Ben asked with a smile.
“Just act sick today and we can do something tomorrow.” Kenji said, turning around to hide his blush.
“Okay.” Ben said. “So…I’m assuming most of this act will be bumming around and cuddling?”
Kenji cleared his throat.
“My parents aren’t here…” He said.
“Practice.”
Kenji blinked and looked at Ben, looking up from hooded eyes.
“I…okay. You wanna read a book while I look at my phone?” Kenji asked.
“You know me so well, Honey.” Ben said with a tilt of his head.
Kenji’s heart thudded as he looked down at his pretend boyfriend.
 *
Carmen knocked gently on the door and Kenji called out to let her in.
She opened it slowly and peek in, the smell of rich chicken soup wafting through the house.
“Kenji, can you help me with something?” She asked.
Kenji looked down at Ben, who was curled up in another one of his sweaters and sleeping soundly.
“Sure.” He said and wrapped a blanket around Ben, kissing his forehead.
“Aw~” Carmen cooed.
“Shut up. You’ll get it.” He said knowingly.
He followed her to the kitchen, where she had a large crockpot full of shredded chicken and veggies.
“I always get the spices wrong even when I follow Mama’s recipe.” She whined.
“I got ya.” He said and grabbed a rotating spice rack of glass shakers filled with chopped herbs, ground spices and full leaves.
“First off, no cilantro. It taste like soap to some people so just better to nix it. Next, we add cumin, black peppercorn, a whole bay leaf and chili paste.” He said, making a showoff adding the spices and stirring it with a wooden spoon. “I don’t smell that certain…twang.”
“Not everyone can handle your spice!” She reminded him. “But…maybe jalapeno juice?”
“Ding ding ding! Prize to the cutie in Steven Universe socks!” He said and she smiled, getting him a bottle from the fridge.
He added a splash, stirred it once more and covered it. “And now we wait two awful hours.”
“We can start the rice after about an hour and a half, right?” She asked.
“So…what do you say we go all the way with this meal?” he asked.
“You mean-?!”
“Chocolate time, Baby!” He said and she squealed.
He quickly grabbed a few bowls and pans. Carmen placed her phone in a speaker and quick tempered guitar sounded in the kitchen.
It was no secret that the Kon siblings took after their mother’s culture when it came to food. They joked that was how she had seduced their father before winning him over with her empathetic personality. They had explored her childhood hotspots, from the River Walk, to the Art Museum to Fiesta Square and the Quarry Market, they had walked and shopped with their Mama and visit old friends in the barrios near downtown to check on them.
“When I was little, my Tia lived with two other families in a house meant for one. But they cooked together and worked hard so their children could go to school and do something with their lives. And we made sure to return and take care of them.” She said as their old Tia sat in a plush chair, eyes closed in content and body relaxed as Carmen chattered on about her day at school, Kosei watching them worriedly to make sure the old woman did not get overwhelmed in the small hot kitchen.
“But I remembered the food and how good it was. Even if there wasn’t a lot, there was still so much love and flavor in it.” She said, stirring the red rice and a teen Kenji adding peas and sliced jalapenos to it. “So when I cook, I remember the love and care that went into it and remember what my family did, where we came from. How a lot can go into a little still.”
She then held out a small spoon of rice and Kenji took a bite; lemon, tomatoes, and pepper blending together perfectly into the rice and blooming over his tongue. He felt his Mother’s kiss on his forehead and smiled.
He sighed happily as he mixed the chocolate and then held the spoon to Carmen to taste. She took it and happily put it in her mouth with a hum.
Had Ben experienced what his mother had in her childhood?
Had his mother shown him her love in what little she could give. Kenji Recalled how he and Carmen had nice clothes and food growing up. How Carmen asked for a game and got it the same day.
His parents worked their butts off and he…
He had just run away.
No wonder his father was so pissed at him all those years and now…
Now he saw him and Ben and looked hopeful. Like Kenji might pull himself together for Ben and that…that…
“That’s not fair.” He said out loud and noticed Carmen had paused holding out the small desert bowls decorated with diamond.
“Kenji?” She asked.
“I…I’ve been such a dick.” He sighed and hugged Carmen.
“Um, let’s plate these and put them away and then…you wanna talk?” She asked.
“Yeah.” Kenji said and she held the bowls as he filled them.
Carmen placed them in the freezer, and they started on the dishes, washing them by hand this time.
“I’ll wash, you dry.” Carmen said and Kenji nodded, both of them rolling up their sleeves in unison.
As they settled in a nice silence, Kenji looked at Carmen.
“I ran away after the breakup and I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing to me?” She asked.
Kenji took a breath and turned to his sister, leaning against the counter top.
“I know about the bullying.”
“I…of course you do.” She sighed.
“Carm, why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because it’s no big deal.” She huffed, handing him a pot.
“It is to me!” Kenji said, aggressively wiping it down with a towel. “My little sister is hurting and I…”
“What would you even do?” She asked.
“I…I don’t know, something!”
“Kenji!” She said and looked at him. “You’re here. You’re here and that’s…”
She sniffed as her voice cracked, eyes filling with tears.
“You’re here and I’m okay.” She sobbed the last word, Kenji gathering her in his arms.
“Yeah…” He said and rubbed her back. “And I’m gonna be here for you no matter what.”
“What about—”
“Shh…” Kenji whispered. “Let me be here for you.”
Carmen nodded into his shirt.
“I have something to tell you.” He said. “About Ben.”
“That you two are obviously not an item?”
He pulled her back.
“What the heck, Carmen?” He yelled.
“I could tell, duh. You two are so not okay in each other’s arms and you are so forced.” She said with a smirk. “You can fool Mama and Dad, but not me.”
“So…”
“Explain.” She said and Kenji sighed.
“Well…”
 *
Ben woke up to Bumpy licking his face.
He took a deep breath and Carmen was there, eyes watery and clutching her dress.
“Carmen?” He asked, then huffed when the teen hugged him around the neck.
“I’m so sorry!” She cried. “I didn’t know my brother dragged you into this dumb mess!”
“Uh…” Kenji said, his left cheek red from a slap.
“You told her.” Ben said.
“He did and I am so mad and sad and…”
“He wanted to make your parents proud.” Ben said with a sigh. “And I needed to get away for a bit.”
“Do you two even like each other?” Carmen asked.
“I…” Ben bit his lip. “I cant answer that right now. I’m comfortable with your brother.”
“You shouldn’t settle with someone who hurt you!” Carmen yelled and Ben looked up at Kenji.
“You told her—”
“Everything.” Kenji said.
“Carmen.” Ben said and pulled her to sit next to him, taking her hands. “Listen. I hated your brother back then.”
Kenji cringed.
“I thought it was his fault my mom got too stressed and…” He took another deep breath. “It wasn’t. We were just stupid kids doing stupid things at the worst time…And yes. Your brother hurt me. Scarred me in some ways. And you know what happened?”
“What?”
“I dated an absolute scumbag cause I thought, ‘hey, I could take years of abuse from Kenji Kon, I can handle this.’ But I couldn’t…He…” Ben covered his mouth and gagged a bit, Kenji grabbing the trash can and holding it under Ben’s head.
He pushed it away, shaking his head.
“He hurt me so bad.” He said and Carmen covered her mouth. “And I was okay with that.”
“W-Why?” She asked.
“I’ve been a victim,” Ben said, voice wobbling. “Like, my whole life. And I hated it. And now, I’m homeless and leeching off the only people who have ever been nice to me. And I hate it.”
He sniffed and wiped his hot face, vision blurry.
“So when I realized I could find a way out with your brother’s help, I thought, ‘well, he owes me’. And yet…He has shown me something I cant believe. He’s changed, Carmen. And I never thought I’d be excited to see Kenji Kon, than I am when he comes through a door. And yeah…maybe this is fake, but I’m happier that he’s willing to help me stand on my own two feet by showing me that change is possible. He went from an absolute dick—”
“I was.” Kenji interjected.
“—to a kind and devoted older brother who adores his parents, his friends and wants to make up for what he did to me.” Ben said. “And I’m giving him this chance. I’m sorry we lied.”
“This is still really messed up. What if Mama and Dad want you two to…y’know…stay together?” She asked.
“I’d tell them everything. In all honesty, it was mainly to show I had gotten over Brooklynn.” Kenji said.
“Have you?” Carmen asked.
Kenji made a face and Ben huffed, grabbing his boots and coat. “Excuse me.”
Carmen watched as Kenji quickly followed Ben out the hall and to the backyard.
“This was so stupid!” Ben yelled into the trees.
Kenji grabbed his arms and pulled him back. “Dude, you’re in pajamas!”
“I don’t care! This is…This was a mistake, Kenji…” Ben said.
“Ben…please, hate me all you want, but I need you, not just for this stupid lie.” Kenji said. “I…You make me happy, Ben.”
“Happy?”
“You make me calm and like…like I can have this.”
“And what is this?” Ben asked with a shake of his head.
Kenji pulled him into a tight hug. Ben blushed as he felt the other’s chest thudding.
“Kenji?”
“I liked you. Back then, I liked you and I was such an asshole.” He said.
Ben shoved him away. “That is such…You are such a…”
His face was red and his nose wrinkled and Kenji could see tears building again.
“I think I still do…” Kenji said, taking a step forward.
Ben covered his face before reaching out and yanking Kenji down by his shirt collar, kissing him as snow started to fall. Ben pushed him back a bit, to glare at him with almost no heat.
“Then do this correctly.” Ben hissed and pulled him back into another kiss.
After a moment, Kenji put his own coat around Ben.
“Let’s get you into a warm bath. It’s too cold for you here.” Kenji said and led him back into the house and past Carmen, who seemed to be grinning behind her hands.

Sorry this took so long. But hopefully, I can continue when I have time, and power. Hopefully Texas will get back to normal soon.

Reader’s Corner: Demon Slayer, Nerdy Nurse, and Play It Cool, Guys
Date A Live, Vol. 1
Having enjoyed the Date A Live anime, I was curious to check out the source material, and the first volume didn’t disappoint. It’s a high school harem romantic comedy…that takes place in a borderline post-apocalyptic setting full of mystery, absurdity, and tragedy. There are plenty of sweet or humorous moments, but the narrative never lets one forget its darker side. Some regard the “Spirits” (mysterious girls whose extradimensional incursions bring cataclysm) as monsters and try to kill them, but protagonist Shido rejects this in favor of a more peaceful approach. Aided by a bizarre paramilitary group commanded by his little sister, Shido seeks dialogue and coexistence with Spirits. In practice, this means Shido must get to know them, ask them on dates, and get them to fall for him. Shido is a deeply compassionate person, and as one reads of his efforts to save a Spirit — choosing love over death, reconciliation over enmity, forgiveness over resentment, other over self — the Christ parallels practically write themselves. I can’t deny Date A Live is weird, but somehow it works, and the positive themes underlying the story are excellent. I certainly plan to continue reading this series. ~ JeskaiAngel
Date A Live (vol. 1) is published by Yen Press.*
The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya
Seven words: “The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00.” Kyon’s description of the SOS Brigade’s video for the North High cultural festival is the most humorous story in volume six of the Haruhi Suzumiya series, a high point both for this book and the series in general, and by itself makes Wavering a worthy read. The remainder of the volume—if not on the same level as its opening chapter—continues with the unusual brew of school life, romance, comedy, sci-fi, and mystery that makes the franchise special. However, be warned that most of the volume feels mundane, almost like side stories, with nothing much of consequence happening, at least not patently so, until the intriguing final chapter, “The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina,” which not only functions as a nice bookend to the volume but comes just when it seems that Asahina’s counterpart, Nagato, has received far more attention and character development. It’s fulfilling to read the Asahina-focused material in both stories mentioned—though be warned: You may get knocked flat by an adorable (and possibly dangerous) Mikuru Beam! ~ Twwk

Play It Cool, Guys: Vol. 1
This was A LOT of fun! It’s been some time since I chuckled/laughed this much when reading a manga. After finishing, I actually went back and reread some of the pages just so I could laugh again, because I was enjoying it so much! However, Play It Cool, Guys is different than I expected; I didn’t realize that each of the guys are a different age. Considering they are different ages, I wouldn’t have expected for all the stories to really flow in transition as well as they did, but the mangaka does a fantastic job of doing just that! Where one story ended, another began, but without a feeling of being jilted due to a shifting too quickly to a different character’s voice. The colored pages were also AMAZING! The way color enhanced the pages was awesome! And the art of course is gorgeous! I’m really interested in reading the next volume, and know that this will probably become a manga I will read again and again if I need a pick me up or a good dose of laughter. These guys are just hilariously cool! ~ Laura A. Grace

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol. 21
Demon Slayer is pain, especially the latter volumes as the series nears its conclusion. Volume 21 opens with the defeat of Upper Rank Kizuki number one but at enormous sacrifice; this immediate rush into highly emotional material indicates how the series, developed for so many chapters, has been and continues to be in its climactic arc, one that’s full of extreme violence, gore, and death. Shades of black cover these pages more than any other previously, indicating how much blood is spilled as the remaining Hashira fight Muzan in what continues to appear to be a losing battle. However, part of the beauty of Demon Slayer is that while it’s full of action and hyper violent, it’s a sensitive story and well-written—these chapters are the very natural output of all that’s occurred before, and as such the chaos is imbued with all that’s come before—a whole lot of heart. Coincidentally, the structure of this volume also feeds into that assessment, starting emotionally, and further, giving readers a chance to mourn for character deaths before progressing to the tenacious action of the middle portion, before closing with a story that functions as important context for the entire manga and presumably for the conclusion, ending this violent volume with a gentle whisper, and reminding us why this series is so very good. ~ Twwk

Do You Like the Nerdy Nurse?
From a cover like this, I was expecting this to be Nerdy Nurse to be spicy manga that could, potentially, be something I would recommend our readers avoid. I was wrong. Guess judging books by their cover isn’t a great idea. I feel like that should be an expression. Anyway, the titular “nerdy nurse,” Nijiko Momoyama, has all the boys at her school falling head over heels. However, while she loves her students in a maternal sort of way, she has no interest in children romantically. Her primary focus, instead, is on her geeky hobbies. She’s a huge manga, anime, and gatcha gaming otaku. She can’t get enough of it! In fact, one of her students discovers her geeky hobbies and ends up spending a lot of time helping out in the nurses office. It’s obvious he has a crush on her and makes it relatively known from time to time. That said, overall Momoyama is very professional and doesn’t ever give him an indication that she would reciprocate his middle school crush. Overall, she just talks to him as a fellow nerd and, frankly, that’s okay. Volume one was cute and, in answer to the question, yes, I did like the nerdy nurse. ~ MDMRN
Do You Like the Nerdy Nurse? is published by Yen Press.*
The Sorcerer’s Receptionist, Vol. 3
The highlight of The Sorcerer’s Receptionist continues to be its tsundere narrator. Yes, I know tsundere characters are a dime a dozen, and so are light novels with first-person narration, but this is the only light novel I’ve encountered with such a blatantly, amusingly tsundere narrator. It’s entertainingly exasperating hearing protagonist Nanalie’s perspective on the story. The other highlight include how Alois, the guy she deems her archnemesis, continues to practice love toward her. Happily, a big relationship upgrade occurs. My only complaint with this volume is that the obnoxious memory wipe trope rears its ugly head. Thankfully, it does not befall the romantic leads, at least. I usually hate this plot device, have ranted about it before, and hate it here, too. That said, despite my grumbling, I quite enjoyed this volume, and would still recommend this series. ~ JeskaiAngel
The Sorcerer’s Receptionist is published by J-Novel Club.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse, Vol. 4
Two down so far for 2021! I have read two different Alternate Universe (AU) Neon Genesis Evangelion manga—the second of these, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse, is by volume four beginning to pain the angels as now, basically, vampires. But as the story progresses, more is also revealed about the world setting. It turns out this AU retains the concept of Rei as a clone from the mainline story, but also embraces the concept of an AU multiverse by this, the last volume of the series. I kind of wish it had another volume or two to really finish up the story because by these chapter, Campus Apocalypse was becoming more immersive. The first two volumes were great setups; however, it’s clear the series’ days were numbered as the second two raced to get across the finish line. I could have used a little more before we got there, but it is what it is. ~ MDMRN
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse is out of print, but originally published by Dark Horse Comics.
Your Lie in April, Vol. 1
For the month of April I’ve decided to do a reread of Your Lie in April, and let me tell you, I am already glad I have. The artwork from Naoshi Arakawa is gorgeous and incredibly expressive. The first chapter alone provides better introduction and storytelling than some manga accomplish in an entire series. The introduction of Kosei and his first encounter with Kaori is such an amazingly well crafted moment that it continues to stick with me after three watches of the anime and now a second readthrough of the manga. If you want a teenage love story that also tackles topics like depression and abandonment in a very real way, combined with gorgeous art, check out this series, and feel free to join me in reading it in April. ~ MDMRN
Your Lie in April is published by Kodansha.

Whumptober 2019 Tear-Stained
Yusuke Kitagawa, Persona 5, Tear-Stained
CW: mention of suicide but if you played the game, you know whats up
note: Akira’s an idiot and only told Futaba, Morgana, and Makoto of his plan and told them NOT to tell anyone else. or. you could interpret this as an AU where they don’t realise that they were betrayed
=
Everything happened too fast.
The enemy readings from Futaba. Being forced to separate. Watching Akira get swarmed. Watching Akira get arrested. Having to be dragged away by Ryuji to keep himself from leaping down and trying to do... something. They were still in the Metaverse, Yusuke could have summoned Goemon, cut through the police, freeze them. Something.
Yusuke could have done something.
Their return to the real world wasn’t as triumphant as they expected.
Makoto desperately tried to keep order. “Act normal. We’re going to figure things out but in the meantime, we have to act like everything’s okay. Like nothing is wrong. It’s going to throw suspicion off of us and give us a better chance at rescuing Akira. Okay?”
Everyone had agreed.
Yusuke had agreed.
Everything was going to be fine.
Yusuke was going to head straight to the hideout as soon as school finished. He would help plan with Makoto. He would storm in there if he had to and drag Akira out.
The day passed by in a blur.
Yusuke was out of it.
Numerous teachers expressed concern over the blank, glassy look in his eyes. Several of his classmates took it as the perfect opportunity to approach him. Yusuke lost track of girls from his year trying to talk to him about the “haunted” look in his eyes.
What a ridiculous notion.
Yusuke was not “haunted” by anything. It’s not as if Akira was in jail, alone, without anyone to help him. It’s not as if Yusuke had to watch the most important person in his life get dragged away while he was powerless to stop it. It’s not as if Yusuke felt as though someone tore through his fucking chest and left him hollow inside.
It’s fine.
Akira will be fine.
He has to be.
Kosei’s art room would have been the perfect place to distract him until school ends. Yusuke had good fluorescent lights hanging over him, and good natural light from the windows letting sunlight stream through. The scent of paint, of ink, of oil permeated the air and Yusuke should have felt right at home.
But his canvas was empty.
There was a bird, near the edge of the canvas, a simple black shape on a horizon of nothingness. Yusuke had an idea somewhere in the back of his mind but…
After everything, after the Casino, he just...couldn’t bring himself to paint anything.
Every time he tried to think of something, every time he tried to pick up his brush, every time he hovered colour over his canvas, he thought of Akira. He thought of Akira patiently, summoning persona after persona in Mementos just so Yusuke could sketch them out. He thought of Akira who packed Yusuke homemade curry so Yusuke didn’t have to go without dinner. He thought of Akira smiling at him in the Ueno Museum, full of pride and joy when Yusuke won Kawanabe’s art competition.
Painting, Yusuke realised, had now become intrinsically linked to Akira. When Yusuke wanted to paint a landscape, he thought of Akira rowing them across the lake in Inokashira Park. When Yusuke wanted to paint something traditional, he remembered Akira showing bringing him to Book Town and pointing out interesting tomes with old Japanese art. When he wanted to paint entire galaxies, he thought of the Planetarium in Ikebukuro and how Yusuke ended up not paying attention to the stars at all.
Also the young man continues to remain silent, refusing to implicate any potential accomplices, however, considering the number of charges brought against him…
Yusuke listened attentively, brush held loosely in one hand, arms resting on his thighs and his entire being focused on the words coming from the newscaster. About Akira. About how he continued to protect them despite being under interrogation and threat of heavy punishment.
Yusuke felt numb. He felt like laughing, if only to take away the heavy tar-like feeling holding him down.
“You seem stumped for once…” His teacher approached, peering at his empty canvas, at his unmoving hand. Before, before Akira was taken, Yusuke’s hands moved like starlight twinkling in the sky, like a leaf bobbing on a lake, like the beat of Arsene’s wings. Yusuke painted hearts and worlds and raw emotion.
And he can’t even so much as lift his brush.
He couldn’t even listen to his teacher. Yusuke registered the noise. Yusuke registered his teacher’s mouth moving. Yusuke registered the words but he heard nothing. He can’t remember his teacher’s name. He can’t remember any of his classmate’s names. He can’t remember anything except the way Akira was knocked off that ladder and swarmed by police as though they were rabid sharks.
Normal. Right.
As if Yusuke could proceed as normal.
Still. He had to try. Akira would have wanted him to try. Yusuke picked up his palette and brush and stared once more at his sheet-white canvas.
Yusuke didn’t want to paint anything. But Akira always did love his paintings. Yusuke should finish one just so Akira could look at it when he gets out. When. When he gets out.
A deep breath. Yusuke was shaking. The urge to laugh was there, bubbling in the back of his throat. Yusuke laughed when Madarame was accused of plagiarism. Yusuke laughed when he learned of his mother’s tragic fate. Yusuke laughed because he didn’t want to cry.
And he refused to cry.
Because Akira will make it out.
Surely.
Yusuke wanted to laugh.
Instead, he dabbed the tip of his brush until it turned a navy blue. Like the night sky. Akira once told him that he missed the country if only for the stars, for the darkness of the heavens that allowed twinkling diamonds to shine. Yusuke would try to emulate that. He’d never been to the country, never been to a place where the sky wasn’t blotted out by the lights of a thousand different establishments fighting for control or the honking of speeding cars or glimmer of streetlights.
Yusuke painted over the bird, painted the top half of his canvas with that dark night sky blue. Then he added black around the edges, smudged in faint clouds, added glittering stars that couldn’t be found in Tokyo. The way Akira described them. Bright, blinding jewels hung in the sky that shone bright enough that he could navigate the streets without light.
Akira described a floodplain in his hometown, with a river where people often fished. Akira described rice fields that stretched past the horizon. Akira described cats lingering the streets with glowing eyes that he always ended up feeding.
Yusuke found himself smiling.
Miles away, locked in a cell and isolated, and somehow, someway, Akira still managed to make him smile.
We have breaking news.
The other students were at it again, clustered on their phones. Well, Yusuke didn’t expect anything less. Their teacher went to the bathroom so it was obvious that
The young man being held in custody has committed suicide.
Yusuke stopped breathing.
He shot up from his seat, his palette and brush dropping to the ground. His vision swam, the entire room tilted, Yusuke’s entire world shattered. Distantly, he heard his chair fall to the ground, his canvas knocked down, falling paint-first onto the floor. Yusuke didn’t care. Yusuke couldn’t hear anything. The only thing that felt real in the world was the news reporter, slowly killing Yusuke’s soul bit by bit with every word.
The police have confirmed his death.
Yusuke refused to believe it. Not Akira. Not him. Why him.
To repeat, the suspect has committed suicide while in custody.
“Kitagawa-kun?” One of the girls asked. She wore glasses (not like his) had black hair (not as black as his) and kind eyes (not as kind as his) and Yusuke broke.
Before she could even take a step towards him, Kitagawa sped out of the room.
He threw open the door just as his teacher was coming in, nearly shoved him out of the way, shoved everyone out of his way as he sprinted down the hallway to the nearest bathroom.
The dazzling orange sunset lost its luster. The verdant leaves on every tree withered. The flamboyant flowers in the courtyard all wilted.
The stars, Yusuke was sure, the stars that he would have liked to see, the stars he was sure would have shone brightly, died.
One by one.
One for every tear that ran down Yusuke’s face.
One for every broken sob that tore out of his throat.
One for every smile he would never see again.
The bathroom was empty when Yusuke got in. He picked a stall, slammed it shut, locked the door, and wept.
Yusuke wanted to give him Desire and Hope. Wanted to make his life brighter in some way, any way that he can. Yusuke swore that he would be there should Akira stumble, should Akira ever need his help.
Yusuke wanted to show Akira the Meguro River so Akira could have a little taste of home. Yusuke wanted to take Akira to Yanesen, so he could interact with all the stray cats wandering there. Yusuke wanted to see the stars with him.
Yusuke wanted more time.
Yusuke wanted.
Yusuke wanted more than he’s ever wanted in his life. He finally had a chance to be happy. After everything. After Madarame. After being lost, adrift, a sheep with no pasture to come back to. A man wandering in the dark. Akira gave him light. Akira gave him hope. Akira gave him a place to belong.
It was only now that Yusuke was finally willing to accept the fact that he deserves to be happy. He didn’t need to suffer for his art. He didn’t need to bury himself in doubt and pain and starve himself like he was taught to do.
Akira taught him that Yusuke deserved to be happy.
Yusuke deserved to be fucking happy.
So why.
After everything he’s been through, after everything that he’s lost.
Why Akira?
Why take away the only FUCKING thing Yusuke cared about more than art?
Why.
Fucking WHY!?
Yusuke cried, curling himself into a tight ball, desperately wishing for things to change. For Akira to never have been caught. For Yusuke to never have gotten so close. For them to have never met at all.
Yusuke’s uniform was wet with tears. No matter how many times he tried to wipe them away, he can’t stop crying.
If Yusuke never met him. If Yusuke never met the one person he wanted to smile more than anything, the one person who taught him that it was alright for him to live, to love, to try and be happy, if Yusuke never fucking met the single most astonishing, compassionate, understanding human being then
Then he wouldn’t have a hole where his heart should be. He wouldn’t be howling in pain in a school bathroom, crying his eyes out, digging his nails into his arms hard enough to draw blood. The pain was nothing compared to the burning, hollow feeling inside of him; like Yusuke was set alight, like coals were stitched under his flesh, like the devastating echo of loss didn’t ring in his ears.
Yusuke should never have met him. Yusuke should have stayed with Madarame and languished forever. He should have worked himself to death instead. If the Phantom Thieves never targeted Madarame, if they never saved him, they would never have gained fame. They would never have gotten the attention of such dangerous people. Akira would never have been put into such a precarious situation.
He would have lived.
Yusuke would give a thousand lives so Akira could live. Yusuke would die over and over again. Yusuke would choose to rot in hell for all eternity. Yusuke would choose to stay by Madarame’s side, shackled, forced to paint and paint until his body gave out, if Akira could only live.
Yusuke would switch places with Akira in a heartbeat.
Akira should have lived.
Akira should have spent his days getting homeruns in the batting cages of Leblanc. He should have gone to the movies with a wide-eyed look on his face every time he saw explosions on screen. He should have lived to see the stars again.
Why him.
Why?
It isn’t fair.
Why wasn’t it me? It should have been me.
In every lifetime, Yusuke would always choose Akira’s life over his own.
He should have done something.
The young man being held in custody has committed suicide.
It should have been me.
Yusuke can’t stop crying.

Anime vs. Real Life: The Beautiful Locations of Your lie in April
It’s April, and that always means one thing: the start of a new anime season! And so far it’s been looking very promising with highly-anticipated shows like Tower of God, and stellar surprises like SING "YESTERDAY" FOR ME, as well as several high-profile continuing series. And as always, I’m already looking forward to all the new real-life locations we’ll be getting to see and explore this season, but while all the current shows are still getting off the starting blocks, why not use this chance and take a look at an older title in this edition of Anime vs. Real Life? And I think I have just the one for the start of this month: Your lie in April!
It definitely is not a lie in April, that Your lie in April is an absolutely beautiful show. The anime’s tragic story, as well as its thoughtful score are undoubtedly the show’s greatest strengths, but its lush, pastel-colored outdoor background shots are also quite a sight to behold. So it definitely was high-time for the show to get some coverage in my column, and during my visit to Japan last month, I finally had the time to take some pictures. So in this installment, and a possible second one, let’s take a look at some of the show’s key locations!
So let’s start where the events in the anime kick off, the Towa Hall, which is the Nerima Culture Center in real life. The hall is just a bit north of Nerima Station, located in the west of Tokyo, where you’ll find all of the anime’s locations. The Nerima Culture Center doubles as a classical music venue in real life, as well.
In the first episode, Kosei is supposed to meet up with Tsubaki at the cultural center for a double date, which was actually set up for his friend Ryota.
But while Kosei was waiting for his friends to arrive, he gets captivated by a girl playing a melodica while children, birds, and cherry blossoms alike seemingly dance around her. It’s a gorgeous scene in every way, but it has a major flaw. The weird igloo-like structure actually does not exist in real life; in fact, there isn’t even a playground at all.
However, the surrounding structures and the exterior of the Nerima Culture Center match up quite nicely.
But then again, even the elephant slide is missing...
Let’s move on to the next location, which is the Doryo Bridge, actually called Maedori Bridge in real life. The small pedestrian bridge is fairly hard to reach to be honest, with the nearest station being Hibarigaoka Station, which is a half an hour walk away from the bridge.
The bridge gets shown several times throughout the show, and can even be seen in the opening and ending sequences.
It’s also the same bridge where Kosei randomly encounters Kaori after she was hospitalized. In the scene, Kaori encourages Kosei to finally enter another musical competition, inspiring him by fearlessly jumping off the bride. But be sure to not try that out in real life, since the water is actually very shallow.
Honestly, it was a bit of a walk to get here, but the quaint atmosphere and view really made up for it.
And that’s it for this installment, in a later one we’ll be looking at some more of the beautiful real-life locations of Your lie in April, including that one special train crossing. Special thanks to my good friend Mike Hattsu, whose blog was a big help in planning out my trip!

In the Four Wildcards and their teams glitch, What if Yusuke moved into the SEES dorm? Maybe there was no room, or if SEES knew abt Yusuke’s persona they could get him transferred. Either way, Mina, Ham, Aki, Shinji and Yusuke could bond over their similar situations and Shinji feeds Yusuke.
Considering Kosei was originally going to be Gekkoukan, that’s really cool! We know from PQ2 that Yusuke gets along well with Aki and Shinji and I could see him bonding with Mina and Ham, at least becuase Mina and Ham are trying to keep Yusuke from all the SEES stuff becuase he’s also doing Phantom Thief duty.
And really, I’m always down for Yusuke to get fed

[ Under the cut is Innes’s Persona 5 verse! ]
Premise: Innes is the son of a wealthy businessman and attends Kosei High School; he is classmates with Araceli. He stumbles upon the Metaverse App (I’m still working out on how), and experiments with it independently. Although he, like everyone else, hears about the Phantom Thieves, he puts no effort into contacting them. He dislikes their arrogance in changing people’s hearts and doesn’t want to get involved with such a controversial group. Eventually, this would change when he encounters Eirika -- AKA Duchess of the Phantom Thieves.
Persona info:
Name: Nidhogg / Upgrades to: Quetzacoatl
Element: Specializes in wind and physical attacks. Has access to buffs.
Weapon: Bows
Weakness: Fire / Resists: Wind
Arcana: Emperor
Symbolism: Nidhogg, who feeds upon the Yggdrasil, is Innes’s opinion of a rebel. To him, a rebel is a freeloader -- someone who leeches off society without contributing, only causing harm to themselves and others. Nidhogg eventually upgrades to Quetzalcoatl, the deity of wind, air, and learning. Quetzalcoatl, unlike Nidhogg, is a noble deity and is worshiped. Quetzalcoatl's name means “feathered serpent”, and the feathers it’s depicted with are worn on its head like a crown. Quetzalcoatl is also known for bearing a jeweled plate around its neck, representing how it’s held in high esteem.  This persona represents Innes’s image of worth.
Appearance: Although he only creates an alias when working with the Phantom Thieves, Innes undergoes an outfit change whenever he steps into the Metaverse. His Metaverse outfit is reminiscent of his Sniper outfit as an FE character, but he wears a feathered mask (referencing Quetzalcoatl’s feathered appearance) and sports a longer trenchcoat.
Codename: Zephyr (Zephyr is a mythological reference to the West Wind, and Innes insists on a codename that sounds more sophiscated than, say, “Wind” or “Feather”. He ends up picking his own.)
Miscellaneous info:
Prior to joining the Phantom Thieves, Innes knew of only one way to restore his SP: vending machine drinks. If he planned an excursion to the Metaverse, he’d load up his backpack with all the soda cans and bottles he could carry. He’s relieved to learn of better methods for restoring SP, such as tea and coffee.
Innes’s major is philosophy, although he takes a variety of electives as well (like mythology).
Innes’s father runs a security company and Vanessa is his personal bodyguard.
Innes has never entered a Palace, because he had no way of knowing how. He could do minor things in Mementos, but that’s where his experience ends. He’s dumbfounded to learn of the existence of Palaces.
He’s accustomed to fighting alone because that’s what he’s been doing for most of his time in the Metaverse. However, he finds the intellectual challenge of teamwork exhilarating. Sometimes, he gets ahead of himself and barks orders.
Innes runs a study group in school and is a surprisingly good, if harsh, tutor.
If he ever encounters a P5 Ephraim, he will fight Ephraim’s Persona/Shadow and won’t stop trying until he beats it. He gets incredibly competitive and can be goaded into fighting surprisingly easily.
When Innes entered the Metaverse for the first time, it was his pride that made him form a pact with Nidhogg, his Persona. This power singled him out for a unique purpose, and it appealed to Innes’s intellectual curiosity and his earnest desire to prove his own potential. Nidhogg asked this as his catalyst question: “they call you a prodigy back in your world, but, here, there is no one measuring you. Isn’t it freeing? Don’t you want to find your power, your worth, without being shackled by the expectations of others?”
