Alicent going to where Viserys is laid before his funeral and having this moment where she realizes what his death means for her and her children is a punch in the gut. Yes, part of her is relieved that she is finally free of him, part of her feels pride in knowing that she persevered and played her role as a dutiful wife til the end, part of her can hardly believe that this day has come, while another part feels alone, helpless and unready to take on the lead and make decisions as a result of all these years of learning to rely on him and to please him without deciding for herself.

Most importantly, though, she dreads the instability that his death causes, and the danger it puts her children in. I wish Alicent could have voiced these concerns, but it's so powerful that she didn't really need to—her presence beside his corpse was enough to mark the end of an era, just as her marriage to Viserys had marked the end of another. Perhaps she is lamenting the years she spent tending to his every need, her many sacrifices, and what it took to “forever uphold the kingdom, the family, the law.” But she SURVIVED it all. Her service toward Viserys is over, and her service toward her children and herself now begins. Her statement is thus made—she has honored her duties, and it is with a clean conscience that she buries her past with Viserys and decides to move on, for her own sake and for that of her children this time. And I love her for it.
